This week we're coming back to the UK for our Old School Throwback with the film that started it all for UK downhill videos. This is more or less day zero, MBUK's slightly confusingly-named Dirt (it has nothing to do with Dirt magazine, which didn't even exist when this came out). If you want to understand why freeriding never really caught on in the UK, then this video goes a long in explaining why. While the US had a crop of incredibly fast, but very serious, racers at the time, none of them seemed like much fun and I think it's fair to say freeriding grew from a desire to put fun back into riding bikes. Over in the UK we had riders like JMC, Rob Warner and Dave Hemming, so it was a problem we never had. If you don't believe me, try and picture John Tomac dicking around like this... On a more sombre note, it's also a good opportunity to remember how much mountain biking lost with JMC's untimely death a few, short years later in 1995. If you don't know about Jason McRoy, you should take a few minutes to look at www.jasonmcroy.com and read his story.
And yes, it's an old film so they aren't always wearing the appropriate protective equipment, if you may find that upsetting it's probably best to watch something else.
Cool vid.. I dont wanna hear shit about "oh, uh, i dont have the right bike or enough travel" or "these tire/stem/bars arent working for me" lol. Nice to see where our roots are and how advanced our bikes have become.
I remember being at a trade show with dave hemmings, he was royally pissed because some fool had poked an umbrella through his tioga disk drive.
Weird weekend we ended up crashing with him, Karen van meerbeck and Scott Dommit

I was young when this was made, but these are the vids that got me riding! This was the best throwback so far! I recognize the bikes, though a huffy was all my parents would buy me... snapped forks like they were going out of style... oh wait... they did!!!
who subbed this? It doesn't make sense: " If you want to understand why freeriding never really caught on in the UK, then this video goes a long in explaining why. You're saying freeriding didn't catch on in the UK because the big riders at the time liked goofing around rather than be serious racers? Despite then saying freeriding is about having fun? Contradicted yourself completely there... Anyway, freeriding was never big in the UK cause we hardly have any mountains and you can't really 'freeride' down a little hill. Cool video though, is it Steve Behr photographing?
Yeah, great vid (seen it countless times...) but weird write-up. Herbold and Hans Rey were dicking about like this, MBUK would have articles on the Laguna Rads which pretty well encapsulated dicking about, all long before Dirt came out. There's always been freeriding in the UK, just not labelled as such. Hell, we were ripping up Snailbeach Slagheaps in Shropshire in 1990! As an aside, John Tomac (and Greg Herbold) did in fact feature in one of the early Freeride movies (Kranked 2).
Like a boss. JMC was the dude!! I used to go for a ride every year on the anniversary of his death when I was a kid. Think I might take up that tradition again. Maybe I'll bring back the one footed manual in his honour.
The word Legend isn't good enough to describe "JMC" with out doubt my biggest influence in mountain biking suppose it made sense that my first ever tattoo was a copy of his famous tat that is now the logo for the JMC Foundation!!!
Look how much fun you can have without having to worry if your shock is set up right or wether or not a minion was the right choice for the rear!! Lot of that filmed on my doorstep too ( not literally)
This video brings back so many memories and JMC was a hero of mine and a hero of many others. It also goes to show how much mountain biking has come along since this video as the stuff they are riding and doing is far from anything special. Most riders will do a lot bigger stuff at local trail centres/riding spots. Great to see but whatever happened to Scott Dommett and Dave Hemming?
Thought I saw Dave Hemming ins sme adverts for Rose bikes in the last year or too. I might have imagined it though. Have you noticed how Steve Behr hasn't aged at all? Not that he looks young now, he just looked really old back then.
That was a good one still got it somewhere too,but no way of watching it so the internet is good for something. JMC had great style awesome. Now will pinkbike find victims of gravity?
JMC.... The legend lives on! The greatest loss ever to MTB..... If he rode Gwin's bike,he would thrash him! ( no diss to Gwin but he would get beaten!)

For me 'back in the day' this vid totally captured why I ride... just going out and having a laugh with your mates riding bikes..
Lot of that filmed on my doorstep too ( not literally)
