A Brief Reprieve - Practice, EWS Aspen 2017

Jul 28, 2017 at 21:47
by Matthew DeLorme

It's no secret that we've had a soggy season at the Enduro World Series. So much so that the EWS even has become known as the Enduro Wet Series. To say we needed a break from the wet is an understatement—it's worn on riders and media guys alike. We've lost gear, there have been injuries, and after a while it just grinds us down. So we have been overjoyed to get a break from the rain. To see some dust again, feel the sun on our faces and enjoy a season called summer. It's made practice at this round thoroughly enjoyable. But alas, it looks like all good things may come to an end as weather may be moving in. If it gets wet, things will get very interesting. But for now, let's enjoy this brief reprieve from the rain.

Just went to the barn and checked my crank bolts.

Not a big fan of shimano crankarm interface. Small teeth, and the reliance on the tension cap is fussy and not as idiot-proof as SRAMs basic hex interface.
  • 13 1
Wait what? I never had a Shimano crank come loose. Sure SRAM and RF have a simpler interface but they do come loose. Shimano pinch bolts are held by two bolts and the preload cap keeps it nice and snug.

Shimano interface is flawed. Ask any shop mechanic. That picture of the stripped crankarm is common.

@sevensixtwo: what pic? Happened to me in my last race. Screwed me over royally!
  • 2 1
OK seen it. Yup. Similar except mine then came off after bike and I hit a wooden barrier at considerable speed. Was handed bike and then crank arm. All torqued to manufacturers spec, clean and well looked after
  • 2 3
@MrBaker2u: and when the go, they often strip, ruining one or both sides of the crank.

You can't argue it; the photo doesnt lie.
  • 2 0
@sevensixtwo: common? I have personally never heard or saw of any single case or picture of that in modern Shimano cranks. I have seen a couple snapped cranks (heel rub damage), a couple broken axles and maybe a couple cracked XTR's replaced under warranty, but nothing like this

I wouldn't exactly call it ''common''. Gonna keep an eye on my SLX's though.

So many EWS locations look so amazing in the hands of these photogs. It's nice to know our mountains stack up favorably with those beautiful Euro and Kiwi locales.

Cody being a hooligan the whole ride by the looks. Wonder if Anne's spindle snapped or if the arm just slipped on the axle...

Wow stage two .. 17 mins for the amateurs... it will be massive... 3600 m in 7 km... omg... mayhem... we did 2700 m in 25 km in the megavalanche.. and that was mayhem on it self
  • 1 1
You do realise that would be a average 45 degree gradient, right? Not gonna happen, never ever.

I see some riders using the Accuri instead of the Racecraft(100% goggles). When you are a sponsored rider, wouldn't you want to get the highest end product they have? Any advantage of normal goggles to goggles with outrigger frame design?

Correct me if I'm wrong but this event is lift-assisted with only valley floor liaisons. 7 speed block seems like a good idea if you don't need to do much climbing.
