Clean Sweep: Elite XC Races Were Fights to the Finish Line - Val Di Sole World Cup 2017

It's been a hot weekend in Val di Sole and Sunday had some intense action to throw on the fire. With the season locked up, Nino Schurter could play it safe today, but he was also one ride away from a clean sweep. An early crash gave Stéphane Tempier the chance to slip past Nino and give him a run for his money and it wasn't until the last moments of the race when Nino managed to push back into the lead and cross the line to finish out a perfect season. Jolanda Neff took the win for the women after a fierce back and forth with Yana Belamoina. Belamoina would take the overall in what has been a season of stellar performances from the Ukrainian.

Nino gets more air on an xc course than I do on crabapple hits.

Much like XC skiers, XC mountain biking may not be as glamorous but these are some insanely badass athletes. Can't even imagine holding the pace these guys ride for more than a minute or two.

I've been only to 2 XC comps and first sprint from the start gate tends to burn 50%of my fuel, as the pace settles I'm almost done

really good to see pinkbike couvering full xco wc, its make a site been more than a dh lovers site, but make pinkbike be a mtb lover! cheers

Shamed to admit i watched the xc for the first time, thought theres history in the making here. bloody enjoyed it and will watch again. Id love to know how much they put into that first sprint.

The pace at which Nino is pushing the entire field must be brutal!

Stoked on the xc coverage but I think there was a little lacking in regard to Nino's perfect season. Reading this recap it seems like it's any old win. Nino battled a different strong, charging rider at each unique venue and fought them all off to dominate this season. Never before seen and maybe never to be seen again.

Agreed. This is a huge milestone in XC racing history. The way he was able to shut down the field in every race this season was truly amazing. With the mens field as competitive as it is, no other rider was even able to have a top ten in each race let alone a win.

Maybe a separate tribute's in the works. In 2 weeks, it might be a "perfect, perfect" season Smile
  • 3 0
@rcexsequor: I thought about that. But if he doesn't win World's there is no way his perfect world cup season should be any less impressive.
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: Definitely agree. Slightly sad that's how the feel of the article came out, especially if the reader wasn't able to watch the coverage. Trust this was unintentional on PB's part.

Congrats by the way on your Whistler win! Well-deserved. More power to you next year. Cheers!

@rcexsequor: I'm sure it was, usually the coverage tells the story very well.

Thanks! Very happy to get that one done. Going to try and keep it rolling!

@rcexsequor: we will do a sepperate Nino recap. After shooting 4 races in one day, and editing in a van up the Tonale Pass, it's hard to get a grip on words by the time 3 am rolls around. That's the hard part of same day coverage.
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: Yup, most often than not it does. You're welcome, rock on!

@mdelorme: thanks so much for the hard work and rad photos! can't wait for the separate recap Smile

6/6 Incredible....and who would bet against him in Cairns? However, it only needs a puncture or a mechanical, and the rainbow stripes have gone.

I'd love to see him have a go at a few CX races; he's got the engine & technical skills....

One final point; how can the sport grow when there are only 6 rounds in an elite sport? And in what is basically a 3 month window? Are the UCI/ RedBull asking too much in hosting fees? Something needs to change. I won't hold my breath.
  • 2 0
I wanna see Nino ride some enduro as well. To be fair, though, one of the reasons he does so well is his focus... Going 6/6 in races like this is harder to do with other events taking up your time/energy/motivation/focus.

@trialsracer: During post interviews, Nino admitted that he wasn't that fresh going into the last few WC races of the season. Yeah, he even participated in and won the Absa Cape Epic race, together with his teammate Stirnemann, before the UCI season began. Although he didn't join the European champs.

"An early crash gave Stéphane Tempier the chance to slip past Nino and give him a run for his money and it wasn't until the last moments of the race when Nino managed to push back into the lead and cross the line to finish out a perfect season"
- That's pretty inaccurate and misleading description, for those who haven't watched the race.
Nino got right back up and chased down Tempier in what seemed like less than a minute and it looked like he did it with ease. Also, he didn't "manage" to retake the lead, he did it exactly when he wanted to. He had zero problems riding on Tempier's wheel and matching his pace, knowing full well that he'd be able to attack and gap him, which he did on the last climb. Perfectly executed plan.
He didn't even look gassed after crossing the finish line. Amazing.

are your wheels allowed to get that high off the ground in xc?
  • 1 3
I'm surprised they don't pinch flat on the landing from getting that much air.
