As the end of the season looms, the elite field prepares for the penultimate World Cup of the 2017 season. In the women's, Yana Belemoina is leading the series to many's surprise. With two World Cup wins under her belt, another victory could be enough to secure the overall win. In the men's, Nino Schurter seemed to be challenged on a couple of occasions, but has so far come out on top. Will today prove different?

A cooled down Mont-Sainte-Anne saw the daylight as the women's U23 field woke up for the penultimate World Cup of 2017.

Anyone else notice the unmarked tires that Nino was riding? The tread pattern does not look like anything that I recognize from Maxxis and are certainly not his usual Aspens.
  • 3 0
Those are not anything from the current Maxxis catalogue. I'm definitely interested in what they may be...major knob density in the middle but they look pretty short from the side shots.

Maxxis Aspen 2.25 170tpi (threads per inch) pro only

@Skarhead89: Those are not Aspens. Look at the tread pattern.

Seems like other than Nino it was an even mix of Ikon and Aspen's for the Maxxis riders. Even Emily was back on Ikon's for this race...less blacked out than last year.
  • 2 0
Noticed that too. Blacked out. Not Aspens.

Yup, just noticed in the photos here. Looks like an interesting tire...

And the winner iiiiiiis... the same one, again. A very special athlete, but roll on his retirement Big Grin
Well, beautiful race, not as beautiful and crowded as Nove Mesto (sorry Canadian mates), great to see guys like Fumic, Kulhavy and others.

I'm a bit disapointed though : Wyn Masters wheeling along the race, but he chose the women. Too easy mate, you should have tried it alongside the guys haha, would have been much harder !

He didn't the same in the men's event as well, it just wasn't spotted by the commentators.
  • 2 1
 Did, damned autocorrect

He rode up alongside Nino as well.

If you looked like Jenny R and could cover ground like her they'd be shooting multiple pics of you as well! Really happy to see the beautiful Miss Jenny back at the races.

 great photos irmo and matthew!

Kerschbaumer Lap times were same as Nino, but he had a bad start and was 40 sec behind at the beginning
  • 3 0
Nothing to report about Julien Absalon's return?
  • 1 0
I believed he finished in the top 20, he had a pretty bad start
  • 1 0
Not really, he was a non factor finishing in the teens somewhere. I think 4th or 5th French rider.
  • 1 0
 @JeremiahC: 13th exactly

Funny that Jenny Rissveds returns, finishes mid-pack, yet gets two solo photos.
  • 3 0
@iamamodel: well she did win an Olympic Gold metal so she deserves some attention I would say..
  • 1 1
@tigerteeuwen: Your logic is invalid: Absalon 2 x Olympic golds, 5 x World Champion, 7 x World Cup series winner.

that pic is funny though. gotta hit that line!

Unlucky Fumic! Again a win for the legend!

What is in Erin Huck's ear? I don't know a lot about earrings, but that looks like a cotter pin
  • 1 0
uhwow, Maxime and Manny use visors! I thought they were extinct in XC
  • 9 0
Yep, and now it has been scientifically proven, that racing with a visor and baggy shorts in a strong wind will put you 1:46 off the lead.

1:06 off if you race with a visor only.

Conclusion: Fumic would have been on the podium if he would have chosen to race with baggies only.

Trust me.....I am a "real" scientist.
  • 5 1
Say thanks to the Cannondale Marketing squad who seem to think after all these years of near podium misses that baggy shorts and visors are more important in XC that aerodynamics. I hope none of the bean counters are paying attention.
  • 6 0
@the-gringo: how about the ones who have never weared a visor helmet or baggy shorts and never been even close the top 20? What's their escuse?;D
  • 2 2
@t-stoff: Don't know, don't care. What I can say is that Manny has been SOOO close for a few seasons now, you'd think they would be out for every possible advantage to get him on the podium. Guys getting paid good money to travel the world are making a conscience decision to keep him in baggies. mind boggling.
  • 3 2
@the-gringo: tights are for the chicks-- who was the first roadie to wear tights in the dirt anyway? And you could put a parachute on Nino and that still wouldn't help the rest if the field
  • 1 0
@the-gringo: Yes. As with Pivot DH men.
  • 1 0
@the-gringo: I'm pretty sure it is his own choice as his teammates aren't all using baggies and visors. He just don't want to look like a roadie.
  • 1 0
@t-stoff: Obviously, they must have been carrying full water bottles. Big Grin
