Short and Sweet
Sea Otter Downhill
Photography by Matthew DeLorme and Tevor Lyden
The spectacle that is Sea Otter officially wrapped up with downhill today. The track is short and fast, and mistakes are costly. Jill Kintner and Walker Shaw take the win here at Laguna Seca.
Logan Binggeli through one of the forest sections.
Even with two different jersey sleeves, Kiran Mackinnon rode into third place.
Bubba Warren racing on his new Evil.
Jill Kintner warming up the engines.
Go on girl. Veronique Sandler puts a bit of style into her race run.
Laura Slavin dives into the lower section of the track.
Anneke Beerten took second today.
Your overall fastest racer, Walker Shaw.
Greg Minnaar on one of only two DH bikes of the day. The other was Steve Peat.
The entrance to the rocks. The one on the left proved to be tricky for a lot of riders.
Loris Vergier was just outside the top ten.
Luca Shaw on the gas, but his brother Walker was the one who took the win.
Elliot Jackson keeping it low and fast.
Jacob Dickson getting his chin low.
This is how you stay low over a jump.
Well that's a wheelie cool way to ride that section.
Christian Gonzalez looking quick.
The technical section of the day.
Martha Gill getting it sideways. She got the last step on the podium in 5th place.
Noga with what she calls the "Bell Grab". Hopefully her sponsor doesn't change so she would have to change the trick name.
Curtis Keene was on the move today. Keene took 7th.
Short and simple, the course here at the Otter gives fans good view of the action.
Lots of spectators, lots of airtime.
There are plenty of opportunities to put the gas pedal down on this track.
Dakotah Norton tucking his way into 4th place.
I am unofficially crowning Cody Kelley with the Sea Otter most stylish rider award.
Dan Atherton showing off his new bike for the fans.
Every bit of momentum counts on the Sea Otter DH track.
Marcelo Gutierrez was a bit off pace. Probably saving it for Maribor.

Dan Atherton using the MudKings for the flattest and least technical hardpack track ever haha.
(Apr 15, 2019 at 8:05)
Jill Kintner using an Ardent on the rear. Speed, bro.
(Apr 16, 2019 at 20:11)
Hes always done this. He runs the same tires and just cuts them different for each track.

It would be great if Sea Otter put some money into a real technical downhill. It would attact more pros and get much more people to watch.
(Apr 14, 2019 at 23:30)
nah... the coarse is fun for more beginner riders and a wider range of people.
(Apr 14, 2019 at 23:44)
: The xc race was uci sanctioned and had racers from the top of the pack.
Would be awesome if the DH was legit too!

Racing is racing...

Go Race it .... Sea Otter DH Track is SUPER FUN !!!!!!! Really hard to Win .... Fast as FUK and the sand ruts keep the local ER selling casts .... Track has so much Rad History... so many Battles over the years ... Go spend a weekend on it and you will feel different....... Then head up to Port Angeles, WA
with your Big Bike !!!!!!!

: Don't bother - a lot of these internet 'DH Racers' (do you even race, bro) who call their bikes 'Weapons' take this stuff very seriously and always complain about the poor old SOC. It IS fun and super-competitive for all the reasons you mentioned. It's as safe or dangerous as you want it to be.
(Apr 15, 2019 at 12:16)
: its trash...
(Apr 16, 2019 at 6:29)
It sure seems like the only folks that bitch about Sea Otter are the people that don't go. This dude has been lighting up the boards shit talking Sea Otter, but the view from his basement is probably pretty limited so I can understand I guess.

There were more big names this year than ever if I'm not wrong. What ever they're doing, is working.
(Apr 16, 2019 at 21:03)
: I've been there three times and live an hour from there in the Santa Cruz area. I don't think it is a good DH or Enduro course. They could do a lot to improve trails. The 4X is the best race. The show is pretty good because all the big names there and lots of people go. However, the trails are not great. Another improvement would be to have a good demo with all the manufacturers where you could try on some decent trails. They could have it at Toro park down the road.
To me, the Sedona Bike Festival or Outerbike looks way more fun because you can try sick bikes on even sicker trails. However, the one thing they are missing is races. But who knows, maybe races are in the future.

Whip, no hander and "bell grab". Looks like women had more fun riding!
(Apr 15, 2019 at 15:47)
My wife always complains when I grab my bell in public.
There’s nothing wrong with a bit of helmet action, I don’t think.
(Apr 15, 2019 at 16:47)
For a state that doesn't allow plastic bags in grocery stores there damn well sure was a lot of plastic poking out on the track....I don't think we need that many poles lining a race if yea ask me!
(Apr 15, 2019 at 17:35)
They’re allowed, you just have to pay 10 cents
(Apr 15, 2019 at 8:43)
Bell grab - if the trick fails there is always the “Bell” helmet to fall back on / test. Does the Helmet work???
(Apr 14, 2019 at 23:37)
Everybody is in the air. Very nice shots
(Apr 15, 2019 at 13:28)
Some amazing shots...
Some of those jumps are looking so nose heavy it makes you wonder how the landing went..?
(Apr 15, 2019 at 13:59)
Tech section.. Only 5 Rocks on course..lol, Doesn't take away from the fun, but that's not "technical" at all really~
(Apr 15, 2019 at 6:58)
The no-handler by Miss Sandler? On an e-bike? Or just a really fat bottom bracket?
(Apr 15, 2019 at 7:47)
I believe that is the new Marin Mount Vision. But it's okay, it is uglier than an e-bike so easy mistake to make.
(Apr 15, 2019 at 8:43)
: they let an ebike race in the cat1, 50-59.... he got third place.
(Apr 14, 2019 at 23:36)
Where's the pic of Heather Munive?
(Apr 14, 2019 at 23:52)
People on the DH bikes didn't get the memo?
(Apr 15, 2019 at 4:28)
Ride DH race, Ride DH bike. The guys have ridden this race enough times to know what it's about, it will have been an educate decision.
(Apr 15, 2019 at 19:40)
yeah, noobs turning up on their stupid V10s with no idea about anything. Probably only have three or four world champs golds between them, w.t.f do they know.
(Apr 17, 2019 at 7:59)
Sea Otter DH, the very definition of a downcountry track
(Apr 15, 2019 at 16:45)
E-bike needs to be included on DH, will see bigger jumps and faster speed trap runs!
(Apr 15, 2019 at 10:06)
I know everyone is racing their enduro bikes, but the amount of water bottles in these pictures is shocking. You stopping for a drink halfway down?
(Apr 15, 2019 at 10:55)
If it's empty does it really matter? Where else do you leave it ?
(Apr 15, 2019 at 14:55)
Extra mass to keep the momentum up!
(Apr 16, 2019 at 15:10)
Maybe they want a drink at the bottom?
(Apr 15, 2019 at 6:50)
Am I missing something here? Is this just a race down a hill?
Below threshold threads are hidden
(Apr 15, 2019 at 0:44)
C'mon guys; not a single photo of Jill on track (1st in womens). No photos at all of Rae Morrison (3rd in womens) and Josh Carlson (2nd in mens). Pretty poor attempt I'm sorry to say...
(Apr 15, 2019 at 2:10)
Did you ever photograph on a race? It's quite a big challenge to get good shots of all riders
(Apr 15, 2019 at 4:13)
How about you go take pictures then?
