Steve Smith's Devinci Wilson - Bike Check

Steve Smith spent the winter getting used to his brand new Wilson from Devinci - changing bikes is never a small thing; it takes a bit of time to get dialed, typically. However, Steve felt at home on the Wilson right out of the box. But riding/training on your home trails is not the same as the week in, week out abuse a bike sees on the World Cup Circuit, so we caught up with Steve at Pietermaritzburg to get his take on the new ride and how it's handled the relatively straight forward DH track in South Africa: ''I'd say that the thing that most impressed me so far with the Wilson in South Africa was been how stable it was. it was very comfortable in those high speed rough sections. I didn't have to worry about a thing: just looking forward and keeping it pinned. I'm really stoked on it so far; the angles are great and the bike suites me well. I am REALLY looking forward to Fort William so I can give it a proper bashing, though.''
photo
The bike is rocking Dave Weagle's split pivot design - it's a concentric pivot located on the rear axle that combines the best performance traits of single pivot and long arm linkage suspensions into a simple package that pedals efficiently and remains active under braking. Internal cable routing for the rear derailleur through the rear swing arm keeps a nice, clean look as well as protects the cable housing from debris.
photo
Steve is now a SRAM Black Box athlete, and is running RockShox suspension with Black Box guts. Not sure really what that means, other than it's not available to anyone except fellow Black Box test pilots. But as to set-up... ''We didn't do anything in South Africa different than anywhere else I would race... I like my bike to feel similar race to race and I like it to feel like a DH bike. The pedally bits made me want to stiffen it up, but the track did have tricky bits where I wanted my bike to be normal; not all locked out ready for the smash only. So we ran it pretty 'stock'.''
photo
With Evil, Steve was on Shimano; the shift to back to SRAM's Black Box program starts with this little logo that simply states that the user is on a different level...
photo
...which means custom brake levers. Additionally, as a Black Box athlete, Steve's rounded the bike out with everything SRAM: Truvativ BooBars, Holzfeller direct mount stem, etc.
photo
And of course, Steve is rocking SRAM's descendant crankset aboard his Wilson, too.
photo
Steve is also part of the Easton Wheel program. For 2011 that means rolling on the sweet anodized Havoc DH hubs. The hubs run cartridge bearings with a 3 cross, straight pull, 24 spoke pattern and weigh in at 2295 grams for a complete set.
photo
The Easton Havoc DH hoops come stock with a UST compatible rim profile allowing tubeless use if so desired. They also feature a 28mm inner width, so Steve can roll on some pretty meaty tires if conditions warrant it.
photo
Steve is on the Schwalbe program with Devinci and was rocking some Schwalbe Muddy Mary 2.5 tires at Pietermaritzburg. The special tire modifications made by his mechanic, Nigel, for South Africa are likely to be the only place you will see this done on Steve's Wilson this season as he is a big fan of the all around characteristics of the Muddy Mary's. The Pietermaritzburg course saw many riders making modifications to their rubber to better suit the unique track.
photo
The Wilson utilizes a flip-flop eccentric chip (hidden behind the split pivot bolt through axle) that enables riders to fine tune the bike's geometry a bit. Consequently, there are two different brake mounting options to allow riders the most efficient mount for the type of brake/rotor they are utilizing.

You can see Devinci's entire lineup on their website.

Steve is on track for a great 2011 with a strong 6th place at the first World Cup in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, followed by a scorcher of a run to come home in 2nd at the US Open. Roll on Fort William this weekend, where I think we'll see Steve pushing hard to get onto that top step.

us Canadians grow our beards like champs. I think its cause every Canadian has a little bit of lumber jack in them, and the maple syrup sure helps too.
  • 38 1
you weirdos even have syrup in bacon. Although, not gonna' lie - it is nice... on a seperate note, that bike is lush. Loving the eastern wheelset.

Gotta Agree with nyterider, once skating in a bauer boot (xxx's and xxxx's) I would have a very hard time switching to an easton boot over going to the x60.

Keep it up stevey, reppin van isle like a boss

Well regardless of who wins the cup, Canadians will still be better at hockey with the bruins being made up of 90% canadian players..

Ya that devinci looking better every year. Hats off to them for constantly working hard to update the design. Steve is an absolute monster on any bike or track. I think he due for a wc win this year. Unfortunately gwin is unstoppable so he going to have to wait for him to make a mistake. It going to happen sooner or later because nobody having a perfect season.
  • 5 5
 GWINNNNYYYYY!!!!!
  • 2 1
yup, gwin will be on top at the end of the season. not unless he injures himself and won't be able to bike for the rest of the season.
  • 2 2
you guys are forgetting about Hill.....wait for the technicall tracks....he will be on top again
  • 1 1
in motocross ricky carmichael had 2 perfect seasons and james stewart had 1. thats 24 straight wins

GOOO GEE ATHERTON!!! hes got it this year hes a beast he finished fort william 4th with only 6 spokes left in his rear wheel. what a champ
  • 1 0
Had the Devinci reps over at the shop today and all I can say is the Wilson is a beast of a bike! I wasnt able to test the wilson out, but I did have some ride time on the Dixon and love the feel of Dave Weagle's split pivot design.

look at that beard!! he doesn't look like a little boy anymore. super sick bike!
  • 2 0
Needs to grow a fro and be Seth Rogan's twin!
  • 4 1
Look at the enthusiasm! The STOKE! With that expression on his face you would think he was standing next to a sack of potatoes, not an amazing piece of DH machinery that most people would kill for.
  • 3 0
To him, it's a precision made tool, for doing a job. The novelty of constantly riding super dialed bikes would wear off after a while, you'd get used to it.
  • 1 0
@TwitterMyClitter: He's stopped on the race track - any moment he could get hit by another racer!! I'd also look a little annoyed lol.
  • 1 2
two mates of mine met him at SGC and said he is a very awkward guy. that probably has something to do with it.
  • 1 0
Huh? End of last caption 'Consequently, there are two different brake mounting options to allow riders the most efficient mount for the type of brake/rotor they are utilizing.' The two different holes are for the different chainstay lengths that they just talked about, not for different brakes/rotors. Switch the chainstay length, switch the holes.....

All Bruins vs. Canucks BS aside..... Great looking bike, some really tight lines, nice forming of the non tubular pieces, clean internal rear derailleur cable routing, however.....the welds near the dropouts.....from what my eyes see...look a little bit wobbly? No ?? I want that black box SRAM kit !! Beautiful full package.... I would also like to see a closer look at the lower shock link ! Nice job overall !
  • 1 0
Nice Bike , just dont like how close the rear shock is to the tire , seems like if you get into some muddy stuff its all going be hitting the adjusting knob on the bottem of the rear shock. but nice bike in all.
  • 3 0
nice bike. but wtf is steve doing with his hair? i think he cut it and wear it as a beard Wink AHHA
  • 1 0
They are the AM havoc wheel set which weighs close to 1750g, not the DH. The Havoc DH has 28 spokes, I've been rocking the AM Havocs on my DH rig for the last few years and can't be more impressed by them.
  • 1 0
whats the pickup like on the rear? cant find any info as to the actual innards of the hub..
  • 1 0
It's pretty quick, the engagement is much faster than my Deemax. I'm not sure as to the details of the insides.
  • 1 0
we got to test ride the 2011 devinci and it was ace, me and some mates got the bike and just messed about, excellent in corners. loose no speed, if anything gain it, brilliant bike
  • 1 0
I've ridden a few Wilsons and I have to say, my first impressions were excellent; especially when the bike wasn't set up as I'd like. the UK importers are great as well if you wanna get your hands on one (www.havendistribution.co.uk)
  • 1 0
I've not had mine too long, but it's really impressed me so far! Well made, a stable but playful ride. Amazing bikes. The guys at Freeborn/Haven are always happy to help you out too. not that I should need much help with a lifetime frame warranty Wink
  • 1 0
Very nice looking frame. only thing what seemed a bit weard is that the rear suspention is damn close to the rear tyre...i wonder how it works when some rocks/mud fly on the rear shock..or are there some rear shock guards?
  • 2 0
easy fix to this issue Smile

take a RR (rapid racer) neoprene fork guard in the 200mm version, remove the Wilson SP's back wheel and use the velco straps on the RR guard to secure to the base of the seat tube and the bottom of the shock, completely covers the rear shock and DU area from any roost from the rear wheel

Arghhhhh !!! You know the biter shouldn't of been there in game 2......NHL commissioner had to be high to call that inconclusive......but regardless....it has been a kickin series so far ! I didn't think my B's would be as good as they have been against.......THE NUMBER 1 TEAM IN THE NHL......THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS......I am proud.....but .....I can admit that Van ruled all year long and they deserve and earned that respect from me and many others that have heart and guts..... but Lapiere taunting with the finger in the face in game 2......kind of douchy if you ask me..... play the game, skate, pass, hit, and shoot.....that bull$hit belongs in basketball or some other skirt sport....NOT in hockey !! He is really lucky he is not eating dinner through a straw after that ...... It is going to be a good series boys !! See ya in Boston !!

hehe I remember Stevie like a youngsta and now he looks like a 30yo guy with that beard.)
  • 1 0
Is that a steel spring? Or a titanium painted black. I wouldnt think a top pro would use a steel one. Maybe its just for show.
  • 1 0
I have been thinking about this too, my guess is that it is painted. Cause: the spring is "free" weight saving, it isn't less durable, and there is a slight performance increase.
