by Mike Kazimer
Have you entered the Bell Blank Canvas contest yet? Remember, if you want the chance to see your artwork worn by Mick Hannah at this year's Crankworx Whistler, all graphics need to be submitted by July 19th, 2013. Bell will be using the winning submission to create two helmets, one for Mick Hannah, and one for the artist.

Take a look at some of the entries so far below (chosen at random), and then start working on a masterpiece of your own. You can view the full gallery of submissions here. The top five finalists will be chosen by Pinkbike viewers; finalists and the overall winner will be announced on July 22.

I like the comic one, one ride, and the black/purple/tan/orange one. I think the comic one would be a def winner if

How can Pinkbike-users vote for the contest? Is there a voting coming up? Because I don´t think only favorizing (which is the only way to post your opinion so far...besides commenting) is a representative way to find the five finalists from more than 300entrys...
come on guys, people have put so much effort into most of these artworks there, this can´t be the way to choose the sweetest design.
please guys if the choice is supposed to be made tomorrow, you should open up a public voting very very soon!
best regards...

I also notice people making new accounts just to fav their own design. Something's not right here.
  • 7 0
It can't be based on number of favs. Most fav design now has something like 20 favs, considering the size of the community on PB, to get a win with 20 favs is pathetic. By the way, those who submitted on July 18 has no chance at all to get any favs. I also prefer that Bell themselfs decide, because there is bunch of really great desings and it's kinda unfair to let win someone with more friends on website. It's like facebook crap.
  • 4 1
Definitely agree with you guys. I too have noticed that people are making other accounts to "inflate" their favorites/comments and maybe even views.

There definitely needs to be 2 rounds of voting. First Bell/Pinkbike chooses entries that even have a chance to be top 5, but this decision NOT made based off of views/comments/favorites. They should narrow it down greatly to only a few dozen or less. This serves as a "preliminary", then the second round will be open to community, hopefully with more involvement. I know they are supposed to announce the finalists tomorrow, but I've been waiting these past couple of days for some sort of poll, but nothing has appeared. I'm just worried that some designs with the most inflated illegitimate faves (not saying all are) will take a spot in the top 5.
  • 2 1
 I should make myself 200 pinkbike-accounts...
Worth it, if i look at the amount of time i spent for my design.
I sent "Mike Kazimer " (who posted this article) a PM, asking him the same I wrote above, but did´t get any feedback so far.
Yeah hopefully there will be a poll coming up tomorrow.

I also agree with you guys.

 @ revboy
they're using adobe illustrator. One of the files they include is an illustrator file. (.AI extension). Illustrator is the most widely used vector based software by graphic designers.

Sorry I can't reply to your comment. Pb doesn't let you do that on mobile.

Hi, I just replied to your comment from mobile

Some people are probably using it but certainly not all of them/us. For example you can use Photoshop and Paint to make graphics if you want or you can first sketch a design by hand and then move it over to your computer and so on. But yeah I'd say most if not all of these listed here are designed with Ai.
  • 1 0
@ridenflow, are you on the regular site and not the mobile version? i cant reply on my phone on the mobile version.

@ madd
i could maybe see photoshop, but seriously why would you even think about using paint? btw, photoshop isnt great for graphic design (why illustrator is there).. if your not sure why, google 'rasta vs vector'. anyone whos got some decent skill and half a brain is using illustrator. (its not that hard to get)

btw the people that sketch and then move it to the computer usually move it to illustrator and trace over it (although you can move it to photoshop and do it that way, just wont be as clear).. again, vector imaging is perfect for this kind of stuff (and the reason why it was created!!!!)

Well of course if someone wants to design something but doesn't own software for that and maybe doesn't want to pirate or doesn't know how. Haha yeah I know it isn't the best for designing, but if you're good enough you can use both for it to a certain degree, and oh maybe if someone can't afford to have both but wants to design stuff and also photoshop pics at the same time so that's a reason why someone maybe would do it in photoshop! Everyone doesn't want to have all kinds of software for something they are not really interested in that much or then just have photoshop installed on their computer but not Ai and decides to use it? Well yes, they may do that or move it to whatever they prefer to use or what they have. Obviously it's perfect for this kind of stuff? It was designed to do that just like you said? Unlike photoshop which is a great all around photo editing software which people usually have on their computers even if they aren't really into that stuff. I'm saying that if you have illustrator I'd say you are more into graphic designing than what a person with photoshop is to actual photoshopping. Ai is better for graphic designing. Maaaan this was a looong comment....Big Grin Sorry if I bored you or made any typos, English is my 3rd language. Razz

there is some free open sources alternative to illustrator... BTW all of the best designs are made by professional designers or design students...

Im just curious if people are drawing these or using a computer program. If a computer program, which one?

 Pretend this never happened

Some great designs rolling in. Stuff I'd love to see on a shelf or in a catalogue. Note to designers - don't put graphics that are central to your design right where the freaking goggle strap sits.

Anyone want to put my design idea onto paper? I suck at anything artistic but I have (I think so anyway) a killer idea. I wouldn't take any credit for the work, I just want to enter the contest
  • 2 0
lets hear it! Smile I'm always open to new ideas

Look at some of the others...

If you spell it "SIC MIKE" and it's that cool...can you still win?

FAIL!

Liking this one... www.pinkbike.com/photo/9778049

It'd be great if it were "drawing submissions only" or "click here for free sketch program" but unfortunately not everyone has a fair chance in this competition due to lack of expensive programming needed to win
  • 1 0
How do you do this? I downloaded the template but what program do I use to colour in the helmet? hahah do you hand draw it or what, these certainly look like there from a computer? hahah excuse my rookie question Smile
  • 4 0
Entering for fun, but to me, the comic helmet has already won!
  • 1 0
thanks to Bell for this contest. I sure hope other mfr's take note of the response this contest is getting so we have many more in the future.
  • 4 1
So the person with the most pinkbike friends will win the contest...
  • 4 4
 @revboy

they're all doing It on a computer.. I printed out the template and its Sooooo small.

That's okay tho.. I'd rather draw on a helmet that's in front of me and not on paper. Never been a huge fan of bell anyways..
  • 1 0
Do you have any idea what program? I can't seem to get any of the programs I have to let me edit it in anyway that will look anywhere close to that good.

  • 1 1
I think we all spent a considerable amount of time for creating our respective designs, dear bikingrhino.
  • 2 0
yeah i know, that was what i ment...so why there is no reasonable way to vote for the contest?
  • 1 1
I just don't understand what everybody is whining about. Bell/PB made the rules. The rules were clear and open to the public. They can make the rules to their own gusto. They are accountable to none. If they say "give us your favs" to decide which contestant wins, that's it. If you think giving a fav to a certain design is not a representative way to vote, don't compete, don't vote. It's that easy.
You call this electoral process unfair? Changing the rules AFTER the competition has been closed - that's what I would call unfair.
  • 1 0
It doesn't even specify in the contest details how to vote... The contest designers were not very clear in that regard. I didn't see anything in the details saying it was going to based on views, favorites, or any other determining factor. It just says something like 'Pinkbike viewers will vote for the top 5.' I understand it is Bell/PB's responsibility to make the rules, they just could have been a bit more clear. I still don't know exactly how the top 5 will be chosen.
  • 2 1
it's always like that for all design contest... And the PB's judges are good to identify talented designs... Let's just wait for the results !
  • 3 0
But the thing is, the rules in terms of voting were not made very clear. I'll admit I understood how ambiguous this was and entered anyways. The problem is if it is indeed based off of views/favorites then it's not entirely fair because those who submitted later may not get as many views/favorites. But the real part we are "whining" about is that people have been making other accounts in order to boost their favorites. I don't want to see anyone's time going to a waste, because someone else spent more time making accounts.

In the end hopefully PB/Bell/Mick may just be using views/favorites to help them choose candidates, then handpick the final 5. We'll just wait and see.
  • 2 1
the pinkbike website system is clever enough to show to staff wich views / faves / account are real, it s just so fun that ppl think they can cheat the system... But anyways, a design contest is by nature totally unfair. For the moment, i just think that so many designs are awesome, it s gonna be hard to pick five. Congrats to all the designers who tried to make us dream, especially the ones who draw it on paper...
  • 2 0
This was a contest on who could design the best helmet, not who could best cheat the system. I don't think any users should be able to vote or "fave" at this point. It should be up to Bell to pick the top 5 since there are obviously loopholes in the contest and the rules were vague at best.
  • 3 1
 Love the sik mik !

 3rd one looks good.

I like the abstract triangles one.

What time does the contest close?
  • 2 3
"So the person with the most pinkbike friends will win the contest..." Isn't that the principle of a democratic election?
  • 1 0
 the sik mik looks legit
