At least he got podium! Granieri got robbed! Flip double whip and a couple other bangers, sure it wasn't super clean but it was worth way more than an 84.
It's a tough one with all those pedal-slips... my personal feeling is that Martin's first run was very good and might have deserved a slightly higher score. Anyway, each one on the podium had an exceptional run and judging from the second runs the order is okay for me.
You're a dick.... just kidding. Please post this up along with the start times for each heat... why pinkbike doesn't do this already, I don't know but you sir, a god.
No, I think Semenuk shows his self-confidence by how calm he is. He could be more like Soderstrom and be very outward about his skill, but he is very humble.
posting this here aswell: Okay guys getting serious about the judging. (1st) No dispute from me about Brandon taking first, he had really good variation of tricks (most used trick was five 3's but they were all variants) was super smooth, only dropped one small pedal and that banger of a corked 7 as his big trick was actually my favourite trick. (2nd) Sam had a pretty smooth run although I thought he dropped a pedal hard after that 360 whip. Personally think he had smallest range of tricks (7 flips, all of which were in some way variants but it was still like 4 flips in a row). His biggest tricks were that flip turn down and flip whip which I dont really think were as impressive as the other top 4 riders top tricks. Although the extension on that flip superman and the varial were pretty damn impressive. (3rd) Only on that last triple whip did Martin slip a pedal but he held it nicely and just had that one slightly over rotated tuck flip but he also held it well. Decent variation in tricks, had six 3's but that three nose bump was freaking rad and just threw so much style into all of them. Finishing on that triple whip that was landed almost perfectly was just amazing. Also he held that nack for so long it was ridiculous. (4th) Actually think Yannick had the most variation on tricks and really pulled out some different tricks, like that tuck to barspin on the little jump. Again he was super stylish and putting bars, tucks and tables into loads of his tricks. That flip x-up was sick and finishing on the flip double whip was mad. He dropped a pedal slightly out of the downside whip but he definitely touched the ground with both feet on that double flip whip. I think the judges were super hard on him for that last slip, totally deserved a podium finish for that last run, especially if he had landed that last jump. All in all less than 1 point between the top 3 places is crazy.
I'd also like to point something out that no one has mentioned, and correct me if I'm wrong: I think Semenuk did a normal tailwhip off the boner log and then I think his double tailwhip over the next jump was an oppo-double whip. I checked the slow-mo replay and his right foot is forward on the boner log drop and then the double whip, but he kicks it the "wrong" way on the double whip. Did that actually happen? Unbelievable!
man, what an awesome event!!! Impressive runs of every one, when you look at the run of Bizet for instance, he's got Only 6th with some huge tricks...That slopestyle was massive thanks to the riders!! thanks boys!
Whats up with the scoring on Soderstroms first run, took them forever to score it, seems sketchy, second run they did a bit better but still think he deserves better, double whip and triple whip and a bunch of 3 variations, the judging seems pretty sketchy to me
I agree he hangs it out there. Always doing the hardest tricks he knows. Never plays it safe. Cant wait for him to win gold in one of these comps he has earned it.
Brandon could use a little Cam McCaul cheer. That interview after he won was the happiest I've seen him in a while and he seemed only mildly pleased. YOU JUST WON BRO PUT ON A SMILE!!
I know what you mean matt-w. Some people just dont interview well.
And as laid back and stoic as he is, it is much better then some phony amped up bro thats just playing to the camera.
Seminuk is keeping it real acting laid back cause thats how he is.
Laid back calm cool and collected are not the same as being a boring person.....
He is a boring interview though lol
Think they should score slopestyle like ice skating. Five judges, no conferring, everyone puts their score up. Top and bottom scores are ignored and the other three are averaged. Every contest starts a big argument these days unless the winner is absolutely without doubt (which doesn't happen as the sport is getting tight at the top).
Should of been Semenuk, Yannick, Soderstrom and then Pilgrim........Yannick got robbed, great riding, course and comp all the way around tho, I think this is what the world was waiting for at xgames.
X-Games was just a warm-up. Semenuk is out to destroy. That guy is so f*ckin' pro, he could run with BMXers & win. If Pilgrim's run was good for a 91, Semenuk's was a 95+. Hella.
1st. Brandon Semenuk, 2nd. Martin Soderstrom 3er. Yannick Granieri ! así debió ser ! las rondas de pilgrim no mostraron nada novedoso y tampoco fueron tan limpias como las de soderstrom o granieri
Truly stoked for Semenuk, crashing hard in his first run I was feeling bad to see him go out like that but to come back with such a clean run, only 1 pedal slip and throwing down huge with the corked 720 at the end I think he deserved to take the win for sure. Especially after being out of comps for a while and taking some rest time, Semenuk really pulled through after that first gnarly crash. Soderstom's trip tails were so sick and I do think his run was a tad better than Pilgrims. He probably deserved second but in the end everyone threw down and Granieri's flip double whip was steezy as. Stoked for all the riders who competed today!
any one else realised there is point 33 between the top 3 guys it was sick riding but dose no one else think its a bit of a coincidence
1. Brandon Semenuk 91.33
2. Sam Pilgrim 91.00
3. Martin Soderstrom 90.67
I feel like, this year everyone learned some opposite tricks to mixed up their runs a bit. This is something that Brandon already did last year, like his "360 on, oppo 360 off" combo at Bearclaw Invitational. And now he still outmatches all the other riders by stomping a huge 720. Sick dude.
emm Semenuk I found really unfair that go with the first places as a drop tube ... pilgrim down very well and give you the truth second theme I found unfair nose if someone thinks the same ....
i guess pilgrims run was flawless but dont really understand why a slightly slipped pedal can cost you points...i think martin got robbed on his first run compared to pilgrim's .
Can we all agree that this Slopestyle event had blind mice for judges? Some of the quali runs were flawless, yet insufficient. I'm over the moon that Semenuk won, but all the others.... come on! Some real Illuminati stuff here.
Holy crap! I remember when a flip whip would get a "SHUT THE FRONT DOOR", now a run with some 3's, tail-whips, and flip-whips isn't even 60. Each year this progresses so much!
Really great comp with some real bangers thrown by the whole start list! The course was awesome to watch and looked so fun to ride. Proper awesome comp
Top 5 riders all congratulated eachother by the podiums with high fives except one...Semenuk. It seems like they're all friendly to one another with Brandon on the side and bitter.
I am not arguing against today's results, but does anyone else dislike the idea of the scoring behind oppo tricks? I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's not a huge deal to me, but I'm curious how anyone else feels. Also, this was one of the best slopestyle competitions I've watched in a while!
agree with laycock. this is a contest, you have to take into account the degree of difficulty and the diversity/variation of tricks. If this was a photo shoot, sure, lay down some regular stylish 3s.
Not only are the oppo insanely difficult, IMO they actually look cooler on a true slopestyle course where the riders have to hit features that are hipped in both directions.
Once again, I am not arguing against trick difficulty or rider ability. Good on the riders. I just have different feelings about oppo tricks. Hope you all have a great day!
Well everyone has a standard way to spin and an oppo way. Depending on which foot is forward. Doing it the oppo way is much harder. In the same way that a flip whip is harder than a standard flip. Hence it gets more points.
It may not look massively more snazzy.. but when contests are won by a single point every little helps!
Nothing annoys me more than seeing goofy riders getting extra points for 'oppo' tricks. Also, you really have to ask yourself if the judges ride, a triple whip in competition is an mtb world first and so so so difficult and martin landed it so clean, no crank, stomped it straight to pedals but he still placed 3rd.. Fmb judges, you high as hell.
Paul Genovese and cam mccaul are the only ones who spin goofy footed, then the claw does twhips goofy footed but they don't get more points because of it. And as for the triple whip, Martin landed a 360 triple whip in a video so seeing just a triple whip isn't as appealing. Also, i love martins style but there wasn't much variety compared to others... Soooo many tailwhips
Semenuk run was great, but i think the second place must come to the hardly shredded Antoine Bizet, which did front nohander, flip nohander from the whale tail and a massive double backflip at the last jump, not for a park pussies as pilgrim or soderstrom
I agree bizet threw down an awesome run, although it could definately been cleaner, and i wouldnt say Soderstrom or Pilgrim are pussies both of those dudes really shredded the course, although Martin definately is a more diverse rider than Pilgrim, personally im not a fan of Pilgrim just not big on his style but regardless the guy can shred so I think callin those guys park pussies is only showing your lack of knowledge to this sport.
Just because Hyper is sells a cheaper model at Walmart doesnt mean the bike Cams on is junk, He has been developing that bike himself and that thing looks unreal, I think it would be hard for any manufacturer to build a bike that would withstand the stuff that dude puts it through. Id love to see Cam on the podium because he is one of the sickest competitors out there that dude sends it huge.
Dude Hyper is like the raddest bike company around! I give Cam huge props for not hopping on the Specialized/Trek bandwagon, and still performing incredible in all competition.
Cam got a flat tire in his 2nd run after running over a nail, His DNF had nothing to do with his Hyper.
Cam's slope bike started with a clean sheet of paper and is being developed with his personal geo/revisions and input.
In short..We have made a custom bike for Cam that we will offer to the public.
It has taken us a little while, but for our first crack at a slope bike I think we nailed it.
FYI these frames are being engineered by a guy that has worked with/for a number of other top brands and are made in the same factory as some Core brands in the market place.
Hats off to all the riders today....These guys are all amazing and put it all on the line every run.
Awesome event. So much better than Xgames. I think the top 3 were about right. Personally would have put Pilgrim at No.1 but I'm bias lol. Well done all the riders and coarse builders. Proper job!
Round 1: 30:00
Round 2: 1:36:28
1. Brandon Semenuk @ 1:18:24 [Crash] & 1:39:22 [Cork 7]
2. Sam Pilgrim @ 1:01:04 & 2:26:09
3. Martin Soderstrom @ 1:14:00 [Triple Whip] & 2:18:07 [Triple Whip]
4. Yannick Granieri @ 52:00 & 2:21:47
5. Thomas Genon @ 58:00 & 2:13:23
just realised, he's the Andy Murray of mtb! (i know they're really different sports but they're pretty similar people)
