 What a strange Competition...

took about 30 minutes, 4/10 people finished their runs, and rheeder and semenuk each gained 10 points off qualies.

Please do explain how living near where a pro rider is from makes you at all good at biking? I live on the shore and go to the same school that Vanderham went to. Does that make me good at biking? NO! Being good at biking makes me good at biking.

I'm a firm supporter of the notion that you are what you type, so compaqnc6340, if not a troll, can only be a low-speed model because that's one of the most retarded things I've ever heard that isn't in a religious book. I was riding at the same park that John Heaton was once & I have Ryan Leech's autograph so holy f*ck am I awesome or what?!!!!!! Oh & I'm less than 2 hours east of Toronto, so............................ who wants my autograph?

Oh man. f*ckin' Lacondeguy, WTF? One of my favorite riders & favorite interviewees, not only for his frequent use of censored words at times when censorship isn't possible or anticipated, but also for the pressure he puts on the sport. He was the one ripping on course builders at an event for the jumps being too small (I think it was a best trick comp) saying "shit like this just makes us look stupid" & "I'm double flipping 50' gaps" & if I remember right I'm pretty sure he refused to ride. So, WTF Andreu? Just WTFin' f*ck?!!!! I'm glad he got on the podium, but he only made it because sadly, everyone else's runs below his were loads of shit too. He didn't have a single f*cking combo in the whole run (sorry, X-ups ain't tricks). 2 flips, 2 cans & a f*cking seat grab off the drop in? If you're gonna rip apart a course for making us look stupid because the jumps are too small & then roll a run with all filler & no killer during the biggest contest the sport has ever seen, when more outsiders than ever will be watching, you're a bit of a hypocrite I think. Put your f*cking money where your big mouth is Andreu! If it hadn't been so windy earlier the McCauls would've hit the finals because they were both clearly prepared to go off in qualifying. The wind wasn't bad when Andreu did that run. I wish Ty & Cam could've been up there with Rheeder or Semenuk.

"Norbs got robbed" is so over-used now so please stop people. Yes, he should have done better in Rampage, he`ll get another chance next year I`m sure. Can we please move on now..?
  • 2 0
it was a joke, he wasn't even in xgames.
  • 2 1
I don't care if he wasn't in X-Games the "Norbs got Robbed" comment was on just about every article for like 4 months but now it's not funny anymore you just sound like an idiot trying to get attention
  • 2 0
 Yes, exactly! Thank you samtomkins!!
  • 42 5
If semenuk and rheeder both threw down complete runs, obviously the course is rideable, the others shouldn't complain. Just goes to show who the best slope style riders actually are.
  • 21 3
There are a lot better events than this one later on in the year
  • 8 7
yea but the point is to have a course everyone can throw down on not one that only two guys can get lucky on
  • 12 1
So what you mean is that the other riders that crashed are not god slopestyle riders?

If you mean that are you sooooooooooooooo wronge dudeWink
  • 3 1
That's beyond the point MCsession, if they had a course that flows easy and the riders don't have to spend all their airtime concentrating on how to land to carry speed, everyone will throw better tricks. Rheeder and semenuk just simply took more risks throwing tricks, and landed smooth enough to carry their speed, other riders were probably more focused on clearing the next jump, I know I would be if I was in a comp built like that.
  • 4 3
because he has more flow and is better skilled, Its a diamond level event if some of the riders arent good enough to ride the bigger more difficult course then too bad you cant blame there loss on the course being too big!
  • 5 2
Yeahbro you nailed it. It's the X Games......... Everything is bigger and badder !!!!!! All the FMB courses can't be just DJ lines.
  • 1 0
That last drop was ridiculous though, I don't know how Rheeder and Semenuk 3'd it, that's borderline supernatural. I didn't see the live coverage but the rest of the course seemed alright didn't look any bigger then Crankworx last year.
While I agree everything must be bigger & badder at X Games the course should have given the riders a better opportunity to showcase big tricks. Also good work to XGames on the announcing seems quite decent form these 3 clips versus the 26trix coverage
On another note F**k yah Rheeder!! whoever missed him at Red Bull must be kicking themselves.
  • 3 5
downhiller, WTF do you know? You're just a downhiller. Semenuk is a contest killing machine, because he trains for it. If you were in the know, you wouldn't have to look like such an idiot. Rheeder is hungry & he's been consistently hunting down & catching the podium for a while now. Both of these guys train for this shit, they don't always just ride what they like, like the Pilgrims & the Soderstroms & the other guys that can't stay afloat on anything that hasn't been groomed with a rake or built out of plywood. Semenuk & Rheeder are true professionals & true mountain bikers, they do what they have to, to win, not what they like to do, hoping they win. If you were in a contest like this you'd lose because you're just a downhiller & you wouldn't know WTF to do off the 1st drop, like any other downhiller. Patatta, that's exactly what MC is saying, Rheeder & Semenuk are the only ones in the finals at X that qualify for "God" status as slope riders. The other finalists are good, but only good. Rheeder & Semenuk are, more. Idiots should learn to remove national pride from their judgements & see things for what they are. Pro's are versatile, flexible & adaptable. Amateurs crash all the time and/or piss & moan when they can't ride something because they don't know how. If an Americ*nt or a Swede had topped the podium would you still have such (apparently) uninformed opinions? There are 30' drops & 60' gaps at the other comps that Semenuk wins & Rheeder will start winning soon so shove your shit back up your asses. Slopestyles are not DJ contests. Versatility is the game here, AFAIC the courses should have hand rails on them too & a vert ramp at the end, mandatory.
  • 3 1
Please tell me you're referring to me. I suggest you click on my profile before assuming I'm "just a downhiller". But I guess I'm just not in the know. LOL
  • 2 1
freeride-forever, i dont know if uve ever seen any soderstrom edits, but he shreds just as hard as rheeder and semenuk. if there is wind combined with 45 foot gaps and 25 foot drops, soderstrom was just being smart, if he wanted he coulda thrown a run down. and that course did look shitty apart from the first drop and jump, it just lost flow after that. and all those other dudes who fell and are only "good", semenuk and particularily rheeder ate it on their first runs. they go down just like all the other riders too. basically all the ppl in the event can ride all the slope courses, theyre all professionals.
  • 3 1
lol Freeride forever you're really talking shit to Wil White? you know the guy who competed at Red Bull Rampage and goes huge. Im sorry but he has a factual opinion hitting jumps just as big. Rheeder and Semenuk are great but so is Zink....
  • 2 4
Yeah Wil, I was talking to you. I'm not sure why, but for some reason I've never seen you in any slopestyles. Your straight airs at Rampage were very, "downhillery". If you were "slopestylish" then you'd be "suicideslopestyler" no? It doesn't look to me like you know any more about throwing tricks than anyone else here, so no, I don't think you're in the know. I think you're a Josh Bender who's about 13 years too late. The inconsistency from riders with too much balls in their bags leaving little room for tricks shows the difference between professionalism & luck. Pilgrim & Soderstrom both did Rampage. Pilgrim hated it & only did it due to pressure. He seems to be a foam pit/park junkie who can't do much more than what he learned in the pit/park. I don't know about Soderstrom, I love his style, he makes the effort & I wasn't disappointed with him at X. He's the only one that used the operating table & he packs some firepower that no one else really has, like triple whips. He's just rarely a match for Semenuk & as Rheeder gains experience I think Soder's gotta fight for 3rd place. I've seen his edits leon. We're talkin' contests here bro. All I'm saying is any rider that can't ride a course because they don't wanna pedal, don't wanna use brakes or don't know what to do on something, should f*ck off. Don't like big stuff? Ride BMX. Don't wanna pedal? Ride FMX. Zink's a badass, but a guy who points out the obsolescence of another's riding, should know when his own riding has become more or less obsolete. The riders struggling to keep up are the most likely to end up in wheelchairs. Flips & spins? It just takes more than that now with the likes of Semenuk & Rheeder & Soderstrom & the McCauls etc. Their time's gonna come too. That's life. Just 'cuz someone was a pro rider 10 years ago, doesn't mean they ride at a pro level now, therefore, it doesn't mean they're "professional". If one wants to be a pro, then one better ride like it.
  • 2 0
With everything you have wrote about Wil and this competition "not knowing" and telling all these guys how its done. It begs me to ask "What the hell do you know?" i see trials type riding from you. Big air"bender air" is closer to slopestyle than trials riding. With that being said i havent claimed to know it all or write huge paragraphs dissing people that are better than me but all of your statements seem hypocritical at best.
  • 1 0
I already explained what I know, Semenuk & Rheeder won, & they were the only ones that rode a 2013 contest by meeting 2013 standards. 5-10 years ago there were riders entering the pro class in street/park contests who couldn't keep their feet off the ground for more than 10 seconds. They were great in videos, riding lines they know & places they're comfy with. Then Aaron Chase & Jeff Lenosky would battle for 1st place because they were really the only 2 riders in most comps that could ride at a pro level. Big Bender jumping isn't any closer to slope riding than trials is. I can list more trials riders that have adapted to jumping than the other way around. Chase, Lenosky, Perrizo, Williams & MacAskill come to mind. If you want to try to tell me that huckers on 8"-12" travel bikes are as skilled (at any kind of riding) as trials riders are then don't waste your time. Trials riders, BMXers & flatland riders are on a level so distant & high above that it doesn't even really qualify as the same kind of thing. Slopestyles demand skills on those planes.

suicidedownhiller is evidently not just a downhiller, but if he was, he'd just be a person who rides an overpriced bicycle down hills. People train their 5 year olds & their pet monkeys to do that shit too. Wil looks like a good rider, but not good enough not to blame course design for poor performance. I don't diss anyone that's better than me. WTF you talkin' 'bout? I don't even have to be a bike rider to see the difference between Semenuk/Rheeder & the rest of the field. WTF do I know? Same shit everyone else here knows. That all you have to do is observe & apply a teeny bit of critical thought to what you just saw. Rheeder & Semenuk did just fine with the course. That's WTF I know. 20 points separating 1st & 3rd place, 1.33 points separating 1st & 2nd. That's WTF I know. Rheeder & Semenuk build their own training grounds & they use them. That's WTF I know. They work on being versatile & adaptable riders, they don't work on lists of excuses. That's WTF I know. I also know that it'd be nice if some riders that are past their prime would step off & give riders that are better than them a chance if the event organizers won't.
  • 2 1
Freeride-Forever, you realize that Wil was the ONLY rider to trick the Oakley sender last year, he was also the first to superman anything on the course and he finished ahead of Semenuk, Rheeder, Soderstrom and Zink (yes I realize that Semenuk crashed and Zink didn't ride finals but Soderstrom and Rheeder both put together complete runs) Wil beat many guys who are considered to be the best in the world. Do some research before you make claims like that. Wil has an automatic buy to the finals in this year's Rampage, look at the other names with automatic buys, arguably the best riders in the history of the sport (obviously the FRO riders are also on that list just not active in competition anymore)
  • 1 0
Even Pinkbike has free-ride and slopestyle together in their forums..... and slopestyle is part of FMB (freeride Mountain bike) i understand you are biased for trials but its really not even relavant or the same as anything mentioned its street with some serious balance ill give you that(i couldnt do it).

anyways Wil beat rheeder and semenek at rampage and ill be there again this year to watch it all go down.

  • 9 3
 Congrats Brett!!!!!!
I have been in front of TV all day, since 9.30am and after wait and wait it was a bit disapointing (sorry guys). I was expecting big runs (soderstrom's triple tailwhips and semenuk's flipwhips) and wind screwed them up. And even the worst was the last decision of "kick out" the last 4 riders... Despite of all those issues, I believe slopestyle made a good impression on the people all over the world and I wait its return next year.
I also want to notify X-Games organizers that here in Portugal it was no wind or rain and an average temperature of 36ºC. It means something: next year you should bet in our country...
Fuel TV, thanks for the broadcasting Wink

well he's used to winning and he doesn't know what to do with himself. he hasnt bothered taking part in anything this year but obviously came over wanting to be the first mtber to win gold at the overated xgames and it didnt go his way so yeah he's gutted.
  • 3 0
Yeah I can follow you if it was just another event on the fmb circuit. At the end of the day this final was more about representing the sport than competing. He did that by stepping it up in shite conditions and course. Luckily for the rest of us punters viewing rheeder did as well and everyone had a little suspense in the end.
  • 13 1
Semenuk congratulated and hugged Rheeder at the award ceremony and didn't look to disappointed, even though he probably was, I think that was very sportsmanlike!
  • 2 4
You have good eyes gweggy :\ LOL but you cannot see emotion the hug looked hard for Brandon to do, it clearly was just look at his face lol and talking about his face it was pale like he just seen a ghost and then he rode off in a grump..
  • 8 2
That's just semenuk's demeanor, he's always like that. Super chill no matter what happens. He congratulated rheeder too...
  • 7 0
Yeah I really don't think you can blame him for being bummed. Yeah these guys are all chill and laid back and whatnot but above all they're competitors. Semenuk was sportsmanlike eventually, but of course he wasn't too thrilled when the gold was snatched away in the last possible second.
  • 4 2
Point is... Trek bikes did the job!
  • 2 0
Both of their final runs were perfect and even on this kind of course buttersmooth. Anyway it was a close call and guess Semenuk will raise the bar on the next event.
  • 1 1
Yeah I saw Life Behind Bars and loved the BMX riding. The original comment giving Pilgrim hate highlighted that he rides a lot of park and that he was a poor ambassador for mountain bikes because of that. So I referenced Semenuk riding BMX to point out that riding different styles or even bikes doesn't make you a poor ambassador, rider or professional athlete. Showing the stupidity of the Pilgrim hating. Love Life Behind Bars and seeing Semenuk back in comps!
  • 5 2
 congratulations to Brett Rheeder
  • 4 3
I still think Semenuk's run was better. He just executes everything perfectly... nuff said
  • 3 1
That is not enough said, I would like more said on how you think Semenuk executed everything more "perfectly" than Rheeder.
  • 1 0
yea rheeder has definitely stepped up on trying to land everything super clean like semenuk, christ, his flip whip was total semenuk style landing. rheeder was smoother into the satellite dish too, but that may have been the wind on semenuks run. either way theyre both retardely dialed... i guess thats what happens when u have slope courses in your backyard
  • 10 11
It was way too big, only 6 out 10 riders competiting, lots of crashes on the first run.... I hope they understand their mistake now !
  • 13 12
No mistake its mountain biking it needs to be big. If you wanna watch triple whips check out BMX
  • 14 8
Bigger is better way more exciting then watching the small dirt jump events. If you can hit it on a BMX tis not a freeride event.
  • 10 7
Honnestly, when it's too too big, when everybody hurt, it's not good. How many guys felt down today on this course ? It was really big crashes. I don't wanna see triple whips as you might say I just wanna see riders enjoying the course, with flowly stuff and everybody safe.
  • 9 6
Yeah but when only 4 people completed their runs, and two of them weren't all that great, the course was too big.

flag csermonet (Jun 30, 2013 at 12:32) (Below Threshold)
i thought the final drop and a few of the big jumps were perfect in terms of size. the venue just didnt have enough elevation to be a true representation of mountain bike slopestyle, albeit the course was much better than some of the FMB Tour events. Some of those courses are a joke. but this xgames courses the riders looked like they were struggling to keep speed, or having to work harder than they really should. Sam Pilgrim leading the fmb tour is a joke. he is a bad representative of mountain biking, always in the skatepark, on a hardtail, afraid of big mountain riding(rampage anyone), im glad the course didnt suit him well. I think its a good start, hopefully we will see it more at x games with a more suitable venue and better course. overall, 6.5-7/10
  • 9 6
How exactly is Pilgrim meant to gain big mountain experience when he lives in the UK?

Not great to call him out on that when he works with what we have and does an awesome job.

Rheeder and Semenuk don't ride skateparks?

Semenuk doesn't ride BMX either I guess?

Have a valid argument when giving someone shit for doing a job you can't and having talent you'll never have Smile

The jumps looked insane, shame more of the riders couldn't finish and the conditions weren't great.

I'll say what I always say, Pilgrim is doing well because he goes big when he can, the judges score his runs not him and he rides the courses he's provided with.

Gutted for Zink as well.
  • 8 1
pretty sure rheeder is from an area with absolutely no big mountain stuff. If pilgrim wanted to he could go train in another place with more slope stuff
  • 8 1
Thats a poor excuse. How does Danny Hart f*ckin crush downhill living in Redcar? What about Brendog, he lives in the UK and was building one of the biggest features at Rampage? Sam is a top tier monster athlete. f*cking move to a location better suited to your profession, lord knows he has the money. Pilgrim is not a mountain biker in my opinion. Love the dude, seems like a genuine guy and funny and just awesome to be around, but as a representation of mountain biking? Pretty sure he's on the far end of the spectrum when compared to the other guys.
  • 4 3
Pilgrim is a great ambassador for mountain biking no question. His attitude of fun being the main drive for him is right on the money I think. Promoting the fun aspect of the sport makes it seem much more accessible to the regular Joe than seeing cashrolls and ultra tech opposite tricks over 50ft jumps and the more regular Joes that get into biking the better it is for the sport overall.

I'm pretty sure his sponsors will back him up in whatever decisions he makes for comps and all those hating on him as someone else could have taken his spot then what about all the other riders that decided not to ride the final? Not heard a peep about any of them...
  • 5 0
If you watch some of the "Life Behind Bars" episodes, Semenuk absolutely rides BMX and skateparks. It may not be his primary riding style but he does do it. Stoked to see to Canadians take 1st and 2nd! If Bearclaw hadn't been robbed it would have been a 1, 2, 3 sweep.
  • 5 0
Definitely had nothing to do with the course being too big, it just didn't flow properly, huge difference there. The jumps were too big for the speed available. Everything at Bergline was bigger than here, they just had a surplus of speed there.
  • 3 0
@bouldertom. What about Steve Peat ? Probably one of the greatest DH riders ever and from the UK ...... Pilgrim is a great dirt jumper but maybe not cut out for slope style.

He looks like he's doing a pretty good job considering he's not cut out for slope style.

@Revboy - Cheers for clearing that up, haven't watched the videos, his Facebook comment on the whole course was that he didn't feel it and didn't try to qualify so that probably makes sense.

I thought the size of jumps shouldn't be an issue because he cruised the Bergline.

I shouldn't have made it sound like I was making excuses for him about "big mountain" or shit courses in Berlin riding experience sorry.
My point was not to call shit when they clearly are extremely talented and hard working, or to call their character and image in to question when they represent the sport and industry really well and by showing his personality well. Especially when the original comment gave him abuse for riding skate parks on MTB, when there are hundreds of top FMB tour rider videos set in skateparks.

Just a side comment, Brendog is an awesome rider but destroys himself at Rampage.

Danny Hart is an unreal natural riding talent and barely rides downhill in the off season, mainly MX.

Steve Peat again is a natural riding genius and lives round the corner from downhill tracks.

And finally Pilgrim is killing it and lives in Southern England (Essex I think?) so clearly doesn't need to move and definitely doesn't deserve hate for no apparent reason, other than the jealousy of the original comment.
