Clip: Mountain Biker Hits Buck

Mar 19, 2013 at 2:38
by Mike Kazimer

During Stage 1 of the Absa Cape Epic, Team Topeak Ergon's Robert Mennen hit a buck, tossing him from his bike and ripping the handlebars off his bike. Take a look at the footage he captured on his GoPro. This isn't the first animal vs. mountain biker encounter - in 2011 Evan van der Spuy of Team Jeep South Africa had an encounter with a buck during the Time Freight Express mountain bike race.

 Carbon stem failure?

Remind me again why people pay insane amounts of money for carbon? When aluminum seems to be stronger, more durable, waaaaaay less expensive and won't explode and get fragments of carbon in your eyes?

I'm not sure that it's really necessary for parts like XC stems to need to be strong enough to survive deer collisions. He hit that thing pretty hard, if his stem didn't break it might have been the bars or something else as well.
  • 28 0
 Have you seen this: www.pinkbike.com/news/santa-cruz-bicycles-test-lab.html

Carbon is way stronger than aluminum hands down. It looks like the stem bolts/face plate failed not the stem. To me that is acceptable failure in a crash like that.
  • 5 0
It was actually the bolts being ripped out of the stem body itself as the stem body is still in tact?
  • 4 0
You can see the bolts broke not the stem/face plate, i thought the stem failed to when i first saw it. Pause it and you can see all four bolts broke.
  • 2 0
I had an aluminium integrated boxxer stem snap when landing a drop... and I've seen a similar stem snap when a guy was riding a smooth berm... I'm not a fan of carbon but everything can fail given the "right" conditions.
  • 1 0
The stem broke but the gopro is still attached
  • 1 0
holy crap! you guys are right. the stem bolts have been sheered off from the stem. that is crazy sh!t. carbon, still for the win!

how dare nature be on the trail !!

I've nearly lost an eyeball to a buck who decided on a night as I was riding down a bike path near forests, to jump out of the bushes across the pathway just as I got to him. My helmet light gave a nice view of antler tips going an inch past my face as he jumped OVER and then out in front of me like I was some moving fence. I've nearly run over porcupines on night rides (happens at least every week/weekend in the summer months to encounter a porcupine on a ride before and try and shoo them up a tree if I get to them first on a group ride.

But my own personal highlight will always be the bear. Nearly 20 years ago I T-boned a black bear who was minding his own business standing across some singletrack eating a berry bush in near total darkness. I was actually glad I hit him... there was actually some give in his body to slow my bike a bit before I went superman over the bars, when I saw the mass moments before hitting, I thought it was a large boulder that's on that particular trail off to one side. As I tumbled down the trail all I saw was ground...stars...ground...stars...ground...stars and the only sounds other than my own grunts and yelps was a crashing and rather p'o'ed bear running into the woods.

What Canyon bike is that?! Its definately carbon. Looks like a Never CF but am sure it says Prototype on the top tube.
Could it be testing a Canyon Nerve AL+ in carbon i wonder.

 Damn nature, you scary!

Wasn't this the second time? I think I remember a antelope running from the right and jumping into a Cape Epic rider. It may have been a few years back if not this recent race.
  • 4 0
This is the second time for sure, but there are probably more that just didn't get caught on camera. Here's the link if you guys want to see a defenceless player football hit. www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2oymHHyV1M.

Fact: wild animals are attracted to lycra and spandex.

came around a corner in tucson and here is a big desert tortise in the trail; vered to avoid and went over an 8'drop. Rattlers aren't bad because you can ride over if you can't stop, it's the 2nd guy who worries about them as they seem unharmed but angry. love that wildlife.
