August: Good Month or Bad Month?

Aaron Gwin

The Gwinning continues.

This isn't the first time Aaron Gwin has made it into the 'Good Month' section this year, and if his winning streak continues at World Champs, it won't be the last. The American racer started off the month with an incredible win at World Cup round 6 in Windham, somehow figuring out how to get down the sub-three minute course 3.5 seconds faster than second-place finisher Greg Minnaar.

A few weeks later, when race day arrived at Val di Sole Gwin just needed to place in the top 30 to cement his spot as the World Cup overall champion. He could have eased up and ridden a little more conservatively to ensure that he took the title, but he elected to let it all hang out and go for the win, a tactic that garnered him yet a victory on the steep and wild course.

Aaron Gwin and another weekend of total domination. A deserving champ indeed.
Gwin's at the top his game right now, a return to the impeccable form he displayed a few seasons ago. As to what's next after World Champs, well, let the speculation begin - it is a contract year after all. Will we see Gwin re-sign with the big S, or is there another team in his future?

Missy Giove

The Missle returns.

Fans of Missy Giove were able to witness to the DH legend in all her foul-mouthed, unfiltered glory after she showed up at the Windham World Cup to (in her own words), “put on a show, to pin it, and to have a f*cking good time.” That's exactly what she did, and even a crash during qualifying wasn't enough to keep her from the finals, where she finished in 16th place. Her wild and at times reckless riding style was still there, although years of barely touching a bike had her well off the pace of the top women. All the same, it was a treat to see that Missy's punk rock, no f*cks given attitude hasn't diminished, and hopefully we'll see a few more appearances from her on the circuit next season. Just imagine what an uncensored course preview with Missy at the helm would look like.... One can only hope.

14 years without a bike and Cameron Zink hooks 90s downhill superstar Missy Giove up with a YT to race Windham. One huge petition to get around her lack of points later and she is riding the track blind in jeans without a track walk. Yes she crashed plenty this week but she made the cut for 17th today
Missy brought back her signature checkers or wreckers style to the Windham World Cup, a feat that was all the more impressive considering she's barely ridden a bike in the last decade.

Futuristic New Products

The robots are coming.

Eurobike is the biggest cycling trade show of the year, offering up a glimpse of the next wave of new bikes and products that are coming down the line. Highlights this year included Magura's electronic dropper post, SRAM's wireless electronic road bike drivetrain, and new carbon rides from the likes of Yeti, Evil, Knolly, and Intense, among others The biggest takeaway from the show was that it's a great time to be a mountain biker, no matter your income bracket. Technology has trickled down far enough that 1x drivetrains have become more affordable, dropper posts are now standard issue on most trail and all-mountain bikes, and even entry level bikes are equipped with disc brakes and suspension that actually works.

Magura Vyron eLECT wireless electronic seat post
Magura's wireless electronic dropper post looks like it may actually make it to market, which is more than can be said for the other examples that have popped up at trade shows over the years.

Brandon Semenuk

Slopestyle's grandmaster wins again.

August started with the release of Revel In the Chaos, a film that demonstrated the depth of Brandon Semenuk's skills in a 15-minute exhibition of mountain bike wizardry. When Crankworx Whistler came around, the pressure was on – Brett Rheeder had already won at both Crankworx Rotorua and Crankworx Les Deux Alps, and Semenuk needed to lay down a solid hand if he was going to garner another hometown victory. That's exactly what he did, in a flawless run that was capped off by a corked-720 off the final drop. That run earned him his fourth Crankworx Whistler slopestyle win, and further cemented his place in the history books as one of the most talented mountain bikers on the planet.

Winning s Bitchin
August was a good month for Brandon Semenuk.

Justin Leov

EWS Series leader on the injured list.

Justin Leov saw his chances of taking home the Enduro World Series overall title dashed by a slick wood bridge on the first stage of racing in Whistler. A hard crash and the resulting dislocated shoulder ended his day and season – surgery and the 3-6 months of recovery time will unfortunately eliminate any chance of a comeback before the series concludes. Up until his crash Leov had been having a stellar year, starting off with a fourth place finish in Rotorua, followed by a second place finish in Ireland and a win in Scotland. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery and a quick return to form for the Trek World Racing athlete.

This is certainly not the way Leov envisioned his season ending.

Racing Deaths

Ride in peace.

August began on a somber note with the death of Will Olson at EWS 4 in Crested Butte, Colorado, after he succumbed to injuries suffered from a crash during the race. Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of the sad news – two weeks later 55-year-old Scott Ellis passed away due to an apparent heart attack partway through the Leadville 100, also in Colorado. The deaths highlight what we all know, but don't like to think about – mountain biking is inherently dangerous, and life is absurdly short. There aren't any words powerful enough to truly ease the pain that the passing of a loved one brings, especially when it happens unexpectedly, but our thoughts are with the families and friends affected by these and any other tragic accidents.

A big fat old Blue Moon setting over the Colorado countryside as the first shuttles left the venue this morning in Crested Butte.

Egos

Sternberg and Barelli show that it's not about the bike.

So, you thought you were hot stuff after finally mustering up the courage to ride Whistler's infamous Crabapple Hits aboard that cushy DH rig? Think again. Lars Sternberg served up a Transition Klunker-sized serving of humble pie at this year's Whip-Off Worlds, clearing the massive jumps aboard a rigid singlespeed, effectively eliminating any possible bike-related excuses for not giving them a try. All other excuses are still valid, though, since there's no denying that the jumps are seriously large, with serious consequences for coming up short.

Giant's Yoann Barelli took things even further, riding Dirt Merchant and A-Line aboard a cyclocross bike, drop bars and all. I doubt we're going to see a sudden influx of rigid bikes in the lift line, but it does show that a big 'ol DH bike isn't necessary to have good time in the bike park, at least on the smoother jump trails. Tackling a rocky, technical DH trail, something like Goat's Gully, on a cross bike or a klunker seems like a recipe for disaster, but who knows - there's probably someone out there nutty enough to try it.

A bad month for trail builders with all these roost PODs
  • 31 10
"...but studies show that MTB isn't more damaging than hiking!".

I don't see hikers roosting every corner, making machine built trails, wooden features all over the place or dragging the rear wheel in the steep. We're going to have to reconcile who we think we are with what we do if we want to be credible with our trail advocacy agenda.

It's one thing blowing up a berm on a maintained mountain bike track, another skidding your way down a walkers path or around a national park.
  • 16 1
@PLC07 I hear what your saying but it also works both ways. In the last few years my local hiking trails have gotten quite popular and much more polluted. Things like coffee cups and plastic water bottles that are almost all from hikers. Also since the increase hikers a lot of the trails have gotten much wider and I often see hikers walking 2-3 wide on what used to be singletrack. I saw a group of about 25 self-proclaimed 'serious' hikers (mountain bike haters btw) come out of a very wet area of trails early this spring so I stopped at the trailhead and walked less than half a km into the trail to see a shallow flow of water across the trail. The trail is normally about 1-1/2ft wide at that point but there was a swath of muddy footprints and hiking pole stabs about 12' wide. I have no respect for hypocrites. They also couldn't build a sustainable trial to save their lives.
  • 2 1
Ironic that @SamJT was the one staging said photos. PS, it wasn't a roost, just a skid.
  • 1 0
the point being we should all be contentious when using trails man made or natural. Don't skid your way down a walking path on the mountains as it will rip the soil and vegetation up that will likely not not recover due to the slow growth at high altitude especially where soil is scarce. on the other hand blowing through a berm is showing total disrespect to the builders. only the best riders can leave no trace of ever being there.
  • 3 0
I fully agree, we should all be contentious when out on the trail...

I learned how to backflip, I'd say it was a good month

A bad month for every company who charges 12ooo$ + for a DH bike... there were so many cool, more affordable rigs at the Eurobike!

Add the Pacific Northwest to the list of losers. A good chunk of the region was on fire during August.

My local trails have been closed since early July for fire danger (something that's never happened before), leaving only forest service land further away. Then, that forest service land caught on fire.

Looks like we're finally getting a bit of rain, but August was rough.
  • 11 0
Bad for forests, riding, fire fighters, and trail maintenance.
  • 11 4
Sucks that you can't ride, but fires are good and normal.
  • 7 0
@twozerosix I doubt the fire fighters are upset, more work means more $$$. I worked in a forest in a year with very few fires and they were all pissed because there was only 1 small fire that year, can't blame them, a pair of White Fire boots are $400!!!
  • 13 1
They used to be good and normal, until human intervention allowed the forests to jump in population from ten healthy trees an acre to a hundred that are barely living.. And now fires aren't a quick cleansing of a few acres, but the decimation of hundreds of thousands instead.
  • 12 2
@unrooted I guess I was just referring to the three firefighters who were killed this month in central WA, when their firetruck was overcome by the blaze. Pretty sure most of the crews still out there would take less fire over more money right now.
  • 7 0
I don't really want to make this a debate about forests, but fires are still good and promote a healthy stand. That is a bit general though, as it depends entirely on the ecosystem. Humans putting out the fires over the past 100 years or so has resulted in dense forests with a large build up of fuels (foliage, fallen branches, dead trees, etc.) causing the fires to be larger and more catastrophic.

Regular fire intervals maintain a lower presence of fuels, causing fires that do occur to be smaller and less destructive, while still helping to keep the stand balanced. Unfortunately, we have messed with the cycle pretty badly, so we are, for the most part, going to be getting large fires for the foreseeable future. Of course, this damn drought doesn't help.
  • 3 0
I don't think anyone would debate that @cgdibble

The only reason we keep doing this is because people flip their shit when a fire burns their $3,000,000 vacation home down just because they built it in the middle of a forest. . .so it's either better Planning Regulations or keep paying for fire fighters to stop the inevitable. . .and we hate regulations!
  • 5 0
That being said, the intensity of these fires is also attributable to this being one of the driest summers in recorded history. There were fires in places that there haven't been fires in... ever.
  • 2 0
 @psilocybinchild

Maybe not "ever", but since humans were able research and record this area(Oregon Territories). And there are still a lot of areas that we have not been able to study the soil of.

2 riders have died at Snow Summit within a two week period in August. Both crashing on features and no mention by Snow Summit about it. Sweeping them under the rug. I think that deserves a mention...
  • 1 3
'No idea where snow summit is...that might have something to do with it...
  • 4 1
It's right by this really tiny region called southern California. I should have been more clear.

I see Sternberg addressed the Klunker's critical shortcoming: the coaster brake. My friend took his on a 6-mile loop with about 600 feet of elevation. When we got to the bottom, I smelled burning, and looked at his coaster which was smoking. When he took it into the shop, they found the grease was pretty much burned away.

It's awesome that Transition makes the Klunker, but they should make it easier to add proper brakes, or at least pack their coaster with high-temp grease.
  • 27 0
But if they didn't have coasters, Repack would have never gotten its name. Its all part of Klunk'in.
  • 5 2
It would have been more impressive on a klunker-period bike. Basically he was just riding a big cruiser style BMX bike. I bet BMX guys would laugh at that video.
  • 1 0
I've seen a vid of Sternberg riding some crazy stuff on klunker with the coaster brake. Not sure where the video is but I'd suggest you check it out.
  • 1 0
@SlodownU - True, but having started when cantilevers and 6spd thumb shifters were still a thing...Disk brakes are probably the last thing I would give up from modern bikes. You have to be able to stop to go fast.

August 3, broke my Tib fib dirt biking. Rod and 6 screws. Non-weight bearing 8weeks. My friends and family keep saying ,"It could have been worse". I tell em, It could have been better...
  • 3 0
Sorry to hear that - glad it wasn't worse
  • 1 0
Here's to hoping it's worse next time! For your sake...
  • 9 1
A very cool month for me because I met Brett Tippie at the Eurobike and this guy is just awesome!
  • 10 7
In the interests of promoting biking (including dh) as a family-friendly sport, I question whether the reappearance of a competitor described as "foul-mouthed and unfiltered" shouldn't go into the "bad month" category. Last time I checked, we didn't need more !@#$s on the mountain Smile
  • 6 1
is there a word for hailing Missy's foul mouth "glorious" yet writing "f*ck?"

Merriman here so I'm not confident in my understanding of irony.

The release of the Trailforks App is a nice plus for MTB this month also. I have already used it a few times in planning trips for the near future.
  • 4 1
Kinda hope gwin leaves the S. But I don't want him going to giant. I know he's going to stay with the big s, but it'd be cool to see him on another team.

Its been a bad month for riding in the UK. Jesus its been wet. Its friggin' awful. Trails are a mess and I have been covered in crap and wearing googles all month. Summer my arse.
  • 2 0
sure you can ride less than a dh bike on most trails. you always could and it is fun. but if your riding whistler bike park all season long and want your hands and fingers to survive, a dh bike is a good idea.
  • 1 0
Its a good month cause is my birthday!! ha ha celebrating it with a 6 hr ride in the Sierra Madre with a 40km ride with 2000m down and 700m gained. Starting in the pine forest at 12c cold and foggy and descending to jungle at 39.5celsius Cheers

Bike related excuses are so lame. Can't stand listening to someone back down cause their BB height isn't right, their suspension isn't dialed in yet, yadda yadda. I ride everything at Whistler except Crabapple cause they're frigging big ass jumps and the consequence is too much for me!

Another bad month for me, off the bike since june....

Same. Had my elbow completely rebuilt in June, tough time of year to be injured

Hating DH bikes is soooo done

"Oh but my enduro AM rig would be totally fine for Lourdes", jog on pet
  • 1 0
Over here half the people who ride DH bikes only ride it on super easy 4x-ish tracks that are best on a hardtail. I do get the hate because of that. Just like the enduro hype over here, that means riding the same super easy smooth xc trails on a bike with more suspension.
  • 1 0
Finally got that nomad I've been eyeballing for a year and it was my birthday. Solid month !
  • 2 0
Good month got to whistler for the 1st time!
  • 1 3
I rode aline on a 140mm travel diamondback sortie. And did it better than a lot of people on dh rigs. I was gonna do crabapple hits, but I was worried my bike would snap in half on that one. Plus I'm too much of a pussy to do it anyways, because I'm not superman.
  • 1 2
It would have snapped because its a Diamondback.
