Yeti SB5.5c - First Ride

Apr 10, 2016 at 22:36
by Mike Kazimer

It was just under two years ago when Yeti debuted their unique Switch Infinity suspension design on the SB5c, a nimble and versatile 27.5” trail bike with, as the name suggests, 5” of travel. The SB6c followed soon after, a fire-breathing monster built to withstand the punishments doled out by Richie Rude on EWS courses around the world. The third addition to the SB family was the 4.5c, a lively and capable 29er. There's a pattern here, and it doesn't take a Soduku master to make an educated guess about what would be the next logical addition to the line.

That's right – meet the SB5.5c, Yeti's burliest 29er to date, with 5.5" (140mm) of rear travel and a slack, 66.5° head angle. It's a bike that's been spec'd with an eye towards aggressive riding, and all three possible build kits come with a 160mm Fox 36 up front, meaty tires on wide rims, a short stem, and wide bars. The frame alone with a Fox Float X shock will retail for $3,500 USD, and complete bike prices start at $5,699 USD.

Yeti SB 5.5c
The 5.5c's frame maintains the clean lines the SB series is known for.
Yeti SB 5.5c
There's Boost spacing front and rear, but this bike is meant specifically for 29" wheels - there's not enough clearance for a 27.5+ tire.

Details

The SB5.5c's full carbon frame weighs a claimed six pounds, and shares the same curvy looks as its Super Bike siblings – the top tube slopes down and out of the way for plenty of standover clearance, and the lines match up nicely with those of the rear swing arm. During the two days we spent riding in Moab, Utah, we passed a number of other riders out on the trail, some of them even riding Yetis themselves, but no one even batted an eye or asked prying questions about the yet-to-be-released bike – it looks so similar to the rest of the current Yeti line that it was easy to fly under the radar.

There's no mount for a front derailleur, which is part of the reason Yeti were able to get the chainstays down to 437 mm, but there are ISCG 05 tabs, a welcome sight given that the bike is certainly capable of being called into enduro race duty, where a dropped chain can ruin a day. It's also possible to run a coil-sprung shock for riders interested in going down that route. There's one water bottle mount, but like the rest of the SB line, it's located on the underside of the downtube, directly in the line of fire for mud and anything else that splatters when you roll over it.

Geometry

Yeti's geometry tends to be on the long and slack side of things, and the SB5.5c continues this trend, with a 66.5 degree head angle and a reach of 442mm for a size large. Rather than trying to get too extreme with the new bike's numbers, Chris Conroy, Yeti's president, said that one of the goals was to make the bike into a little more of an all-rounder compared to the race-bred SB6. To achieve that goal, the SB5.5c's wheelbase is 20mm shorter than the SB6, and it's spec'd with a fork with 51mm of offset to help counteract the slightly slower steering that can come with larger wheels.

Yeti SB 5.5c
Yeti's Switch Infinity system relies on two rails to control the rear axle path.

Suspension Design

Like the rest of the bikes in the SB lineup, the SB5.5c uses Yeti's clever Switch Infinity suspension design. Developed in conjunction with Fox Racing Shox, it relies on two short Kashima-coated rails located just above the bottom bracket to manipulate the bike's axle path. Initially, as the bike goes through its travel the carrier moves upwards on the rails, giving the bike a rearward axle path for improved pedaling performance. As the rear wheel goes deeper into its travel the mechanism moves downwards, reducing the amount of chain tension for better big hit absorption.

Build Kits

Yeti SB 5.5c

It was 2001 when I made my first trip to Moab, a place that had been on my wishlist from the moment I first saw photos of its surreal trails in a magazine. Clad in a full spandex kit and aboard a V-brake equipped hardtail, I rode until I could barely hold onto the bars, astounded by the scenery and the traction provided by the reddish brown sandstone. If you'd told me back then that I'd one day return aboard a 28 pound, carbon fiber full-suspension bike with almost six inches of travel and 29" wheels, a bike that could be launched full speed into football field long sections of tombstone-like rocks and come out the other side without missing a beat, I'd have laughed out loud. The future is an amazing place.

I was able to get in two days of riding aboard the SB5.5c, just enough time to begin to suss out the turquoise machine's character. Our first ride was the HyMasa – Rockstacker – Captain Ahab loop, which consists of multiple punchy climbs up sandstone ledges, followed by an engaging downhill that's chock full of technical rock sections. Set up with 30% sag and with the Float X shock fully open, there wasn't any unnecessary suspension movement while climbing - the Switch Infinity design means that it's rarely necessary to flip the compression lever into a firmer setting. For as stout as the SB5.5c feels, it was still easy to lift the front end up and over the natural stair steps, and scaling the barrage of awkward ledges didn't pose any problems. The bike's uphill handling does feel slightly less lively than the SB5 or the SB4.5, but that's not really surprising given the slacker angles and additional travel.

Yeti SB 5.5c
Richie Rude puts the SB5.5c through its paces in New Zealand. Photo: Dave Trumpore

On the descents, there's an unflinching solidity to the SB5.5c, a feeling that makes you want to see just how long you can go without touching the brakes. It's a speed freak through and through, and it felt best barreling through the chunky rock gardens on the Porcupine Rim trail and Captain Ahab as fast as possible. That's not to say it can't handle slower speed riding – I didn't have any trouble navigating the techy, tight switchbacks found on the Rockstacker trail - but it's most at home rocketing along at a blistering pace. The bigger wheels do take a little more effort to snap through tight turns or to bunnyhop over obstacles compared to a smaller wheeled bike, but that extra effort is a minor tradeoff for the improved rollover ability, a trait that helps keep the front wheel from getting sucked into potentially endo-inducing holes.

There may be a 20mm difference between the amount of front and rear travel, but it's certainly not enough to upset the balance of the bike, and the fork and shock were both silent and smooth, taking the edge off the innumerable jagged outcroppings I plowed through. I did find that the Easton 35mm carbon handlebars felt unnecessarily stiff, a feeling that was likely exacerbated by the rocky rather than loamy terrain, but other than that the rest of the build kit is exactly what you would want for tackling everything from enduro race courses to laps in the bike park, with meaty tires, a short stem, wide bars, and excellent suspension.

bigquotesThe SB5.5c is a lot of bike, and for many riders the shorter travel and sharper handling of Yeti's SB4.5c will more than suffice. But for those who are looking for a 29er that can carry an inordinate amount of speed through nasty, chunky terrain, and still comfortably be pedaled uphill, the SB5.5 could be just the ticket. Of course, two days of riding isn't nearly enough time to comment on durability or to really dive into all the handling and suspension nuances of a bike - we'll have a more in-depth review later this year.- Mike Kazimer

Gotta love the mixing of imperial and metric dimensions.

5.5" of rear travel. 160mm forks. 29" wheels, 12 x 148mm rear spacing, 15 x 110mm front and 2.5" tyres. Or should i say "tires".
  • 194 0
For this bike to work as designed, you must plan your ride distance in miles, and track it in kilometers. It also climbs in meters and descends in feet.

@MTBrent: Would like to climb in feet, and desced in metres. Best option would be the equal number of feet and metres. It'd be beautiful, if you can climb the same hill in the same number of feet, and then go down the hill in the same number of metres- exactly the way you went up to the top. Who the hell likes ascending?

@properp: It's a bigger issue with Yeti carbon stays. They are very fragile and Yeti does not replace them for free... even with their grassroots sponsored riders. I've broken aluminum chainstays on my sx trail, and haven't broken any Santa Cruz carbon stays. Good carbon doesn't break that easy. Even if they do, Santa Cruz replaces them for free.
  • 1 0
@dk1996: They use carbon on the seatstays, even on the alloy bikes.

@dualsuspensiondave: totally agree. Yeti does not stand behind there frames

@Csmitty: word to that. they wouldn't even help me with sourcing some replacement shock hardware that I needed on a 575 that I had. Kept telling me to go to my lbs and my lbs kept telling me to go to Yeti. I quickly sold that frame and got a santa cruz and have never looked back.

A GX bike for $6k?! And $10 for XTR (we know how much Shimano has been dropping prices
too). I should by this over other bikes that are just as good, if not better, and cheaper why? No wonder I don't see anyone riding a Yeti.
  • 39 2
You could buy 2 YTs for the price of 1 yeti. So there's that...
  • 17 1
And the Rocky Mountain Instinct BC edition
  • 16 1
@SlodownU: yeti's are overpriced, and the fact they only offer expensive carbon bikes without affordable alternatives is lame
. But I've ridden quite a few bikes and consider myself to have a good grasp on the finer workings of suspenion and handling. And having ridden the yeti sb6 I can say the suspenion is simply unreal. No I don't own it I've ridden a friend's quite a few times. But it's hands down the best suspenion and bike I've ever ridden.
  • 134 1
@maxlombardy, yes you could buy 2 YT's for that price, but you only get half the letters and no vowels.
  • 5 2
While we're on the subject of comparisons, why is it the Specialized Enduro is the only 29er with 155mm of travel? It's been out for a couple years now. Why aren't others following suit? The travel seems to be getting shorter and the geometry less aggressive these days. I'm not sure I like that trend. I'm happy to see the Jeffsy and this Yeti on the more aggressive side.
  • 2 0
Sorry for the triple post weirdness. Not sure what happened.
  • 3 1
@SlodownU: i'm sure Silicon Valley is selling lots of them... lol
  • 5 2
@TheR: The Niner WFO 9 has 150mm of travel and a slack head angle (66.5 with a 160mm fork). A buddy of mine is building one frame-out and the total cost will come in under 4k with all of latest bells and whistles. Of course it helps that it's on sale currently at $1k with a Monarch Plus.
  • 2 0
@TheR: Seems like the trend is the bigger the wheels the less travel you need. Evil is one of the few companies that offer a bike to compete with the Specialized Enduro. The new Wreckoning has 160mm travel with a 66 degree head angle
  • 7 1
 @ryan83: Also the Evil Wreckoning.
  • 1 0
@SlodownU: The $10K XTR has ENVE wheels. The X01 doesn't so not exactly a direct comparison. Wonder if they'll offer an XTR option with the DT wheels on the X01,
  • 3 0
 @ryan83: 1k with shock? That's a good deal
  • 3 2
@OriginalDonk: Ok, $8k with carbon wheels? That's about what everyone else's top of the line bike costs with carbon wheels. The 5c and 6c are nice bikes, but not the best I ever rode. I know preference is subjective, but if someone handed me $10k to spend on a bike, Yeti would not be find first choice. Shit, I'd spend $5k on a bike and buy a used moto.

@Travel66: CRC are now advertising the Mega 290 and 275 frames with a headset and DVO Diamond fork for only a little more than the frame only. That would add up to a sweet custom spec at a reasonable price.
  • 1 2
@jaame: I guess that's one way to clear out the DVO forks for CRC
Although to be fair I heard the DVO is alright, but I doubt I would swap my Pikes for anything else...
  • 2 1
@Travel66: You just keep your Pike then...
lol
DVO is "alright"
lol
  • 1 0
@Travel66: To be honest that was my first thought, as they are advertising the black ones rather than the brown that would perfectly match the frame.

I wonder if they will do a frame kit with the Yari or Lyrik. Shock options would be good too. I wouldn't want a crappy Monarch for a frame at that price. £1350 is too much for frame only with that shock when you compare it to yt. They should do an option with a Lyrik and Fox x2.
  • 1 0
@jaame: its nukeproof I doubt you will see that much in the way of options but who knows...at least they do frame only..

don't agree on the monarch.....I've had two on different bikes and they have worked really well for me...
  • 1 0
@Travel66: I've also had two. One was f*cking shite and the current one is acceptable on a short travel ss bike set up rock hard.
  • 1 0
@jaame: Sounds like you are either very unlucky or there is a set up issue...
  • 1 0
@Travel66: The first one I had was from the very first batch of RC3s in Taiwan. It clicked on compression, lost its rebound damping easily on jump trails and was about as sensitive as Donald Trump. I believe they are better now, but still not a patch on anything else from any decent company.
  • 1 0
@jaame: you were unlucky they really are good and I have BOS to compare too. Certainly never had a better fox shock (save I will get a new X2 with a new frame) but haven't properly tried any Cane Creek.

Had a chance to demo this bike this past weekend. It was excellent. I put it through some paces on some gnarly terrain. It handled very similarly to -- in fact slightly better -- my 2010 26-inch Enduro on technical terrain, and was superior on the climbs. I also demo'd an SB 6, and I expected to like it better than this 29er, but the 5.5 was the better rig, in my opinion. I'll be getting a new bike in the next year, and this one is definitely in the running.
  • 2 1
@TheR: you can not get a good feel fir a bike on a single ride demo. It has taken me weeks to dial in the suspension on a new bike. Just to be fair. It takes time to pass judgement on a new steed.
  • 2 0
@Golden-G: Yeah, I agree for the most part. But when looking for a new bike, you have to have something to go by, and most of us only have the opportunity to ride a single demo. It's not the end-all, be-all, but It's far better than reading geometry specs on the website, or just deciding I like teal.

I had an hour on both the 5.5. and the 6 on very familiar trails, and both are really good, but the 5.5 made the better first impression on trails that I ride every day. It's just my opinion. If you like the 6 better, or hate both, I don't have a problem with that. Just thought I'd share some real world experience.
  • 1 0
@TheR: both are sick bikes. Which ever you prefer. Tou won't be disappointed!

I gotta say, the guy at a shop I went to was all but steering me away from the Yetis. I'd ask about their Yetis, and he'd pump up another brand. Last time Yeti made me buy a new one for the "discount" price of $500.00.
They didn't even have the guts to respond to my email, and would only speak to my LBS.
Yuck Feti!
  • 1 0
@AmityTom: the question I was asking this guy centered on the rear triangle. I asked him if the carbon triangle was prone to breaking. He said of the three brands he sold, he's seen more issues with the Yeti rear triangle than with the others. I don't know if they were problems of epic proportions, where every bike has been returned, or if it's just one or two for yeti and zero for the others.

I'd really like a yeti. I think they are cool bikes, and I like the idea of patronizing a Colorado company. But I'm going to have to watch closely before I pull the trigger.

I was a huge Yeti fan before I bought one. Love that it's an American company. I have the SB-66, non-carbon.

It's also funny how all the rags seem to forget about the ORIGINAL long-travel 29er when
reviewing another follower/copy cat.
After YEARS of hating 29ers because of the attraction to 'em by the spandex crowd,
my LBS finally talked me into demoing one back in '14.
Despite how well the thing rode, I still couldn't get the spandex stigma off me, so I pitched it in favor
of first a 27.5" Enduro, then a Slash 27.5. Neither of 'em was as fast as the Enduro down my local DH runs, so I then demo'd an Intense 29" Carbine, then a WFO, and neither of 'em tracked as well as the Enduro, or carried as much speed(under control), so I bought another 29" Enduro, and this time I'm keeping the fuggin thing.
I'm not in love with Specialized in any way, shape, or form, but if there's a product available as good as this one, I don't give a crap who makes it, I'm gonna buy, borrow, steal one

And their 650b shock yoke is out of stock, and integrated headset hardware means no angleset. AND since it uses that stupid shock yoke extension, can't really run offset bushings.
  • 5 1
@hamncheez: Wow, strange you find the over the bars feeling. I've raced mine at the EWS in scotland on really steep shizzle and never felt like going otb. You can run one offset bushing on the shock that maybe slackens it by about .3 degree. It's a little but noticeable.
  • 7 4
@diego-b: maybe the rider was a piece of shit instead of the bike during that demo ride.
  • 9 1
@hamncheez: Take into consideration that the E29 was introduced in LATE 2012! And its still the bike to beat! So yes geometry has come a little bit further but the bike is by no means outdated or obsolete.

With a reboot being introdued for 2017 most likely (a few months away) We are likely to see all this. Lower bb, slacker HA, longer reach etc... I suspect the bike will be amazing.

But for now you can manage i assume. Dont blame the bike for your shortcomings.

I recently put 1 offset bushing in my Enduro29 and while barely noticeable, the bike slays the downhills like never before. Try it out and stop whining. I am also waiting for the 650b link to come back in stock. But i think it will be a little to low and slack for my everyday trail riding purposes.

In the meantime theres some other things you can try too.

@Questlove967: I've read that article. I understand that the GEO is a bit older, and that for most people its great. There are things I love about the bike, don't get me wrong. But what really gets my goat is Specialized proprietary everything. All of Cannondales proprietary stuff has very good reasoning behind it. the big S does it just because. The whole stupid shock yoke thing is really dumb, especially since when the rebooted enduro came out back in 2010 it could still mount to a regular shock eyelet. The custom shock strokes are dumb. The integrated headsets make anglesets impossible. Finally, the incredibly stupid 142+ rear spacing that makes it impossible to sell my wheelset when I want to try an XD driver and wider rims.

@rckon03: Typically (complete generalisation but bare with me...) gay men take a lot better care of themselves than straight men do, they workout more and generally look better. I know because I am a straight outta shape man. Therefore saying something looks "gay" is actually a compliment. I would say the 29ers of old actually look "straight" whereas the new 29ers (like the Hightower, Jeffsy and 5.5C) definitely look "gay" and that makes me want one.

I'd absolutely buy a Yeti again IF the prices didn't skyrocket like Trump's hair in a strong gust. Think about the # of bikes they'd sell at a lower price.  At some point in their recent history, Yeti clearly had a company meeting where Cocalis decided their company strategy would revolve around 2 things: sponsoring a top notch EWS team, and making bikes that unapologetically cater only to dentists. Seriously though, how does a company with a history of making fairly reasonably priced mainstream bikes suddenly start almost exclusively producing $3000-3500 carbon bikes? I had loads of buddies who started riding on Yeti bikes because of their bang for buck (Think ASX, 575, ASR5...) an, but we've had to throw any sense of brand loyalty out the window...now none of us can even begin to consider one.

Pricing is simply a company's gauge of the market. No amount of whining is going to bring Yeti's prices down. Whining only works if you're a woman and/or black against spineless politicians.

Besides, YT has crazy good prices for crazy nice bikes/builds. Why are you bitching about prices in the first place?

While I'd love to buy the XTR complete from Yeti I just did a little online cost analysis. I don't know how they've come up with $10599 (US Dollars) for that setup - buying the frame and shock from Yeti then all the components separately from a certain online store (swapping out the XTR 11-40 cassette for the XT 11-42 cassette, the XTR Trail brakes for a set of Saint brakes and the Maxxis Minion/Agresser for a set of High Rollers), and the wheels which would be purchased direct off the ENVE website only adds up to $8967(US dollars).

Even after dropping a couple of hundy (and a few beers) to my local to put it all together properly, well...

It pays to shop around folks.
  • 12 3
Nah... That underside water bottle mount is a deal breaker
  • 2 0
So, I'm kinda curious, since there's quite a few bottle cages mounted in that spot: does somebody make a bottle cage with a shroud or something to protect the bottle? I know there's a few bottle companies that have flip caps for this, but I'm wondering if somebody makes something you can use any bottle with.

That said, I appreciate it even having the bottom mount, because while it may not be the greatest for water, you can still use it for storage, like co2, pumps, tubes, etc. even mount a fender to it.

To be clear, I'm not asking @Spark24 directly, just kinda putting it out there.
  • 6 0
Don't bash it until you've ridden it. There's nothing like a switch bike I promise you, and it's not hype. I personally feel the switch is the biggest leap forward in our sport in a long time.
  • 6 1
Im not convinced about its longevity in the wet mud I ride in
  • 3 2
I've tested both the Yeti switch and Giant MAESTRO. I'd take the MAESTRO over a switch any day. Off the line and climbing I felt the switch lost more energy in pedal stroke. Giant is not the boutique brand and is overlooked by many.
  • 6 1
@alsorl: in the past 2 years, I've owned a giant anthem, a trance x 29er, a trance 27.5, transition scout, a yeti sb5c, and now a yeti sb4.5c. There is no comparison between the pedaling performance of maestro and the switch infinity. I've always thought maestro felt good going downhill, but IMHO SI has it bested in every scenario. Obviously this is my opinion, but I feel like I've owned and ridden enough bikes to make that judgement.
  • 4 0
I'm not buying all these 29er bikes and reviews lately. It's like dejavu when all the 27.5 were being released. Every time one got released it was faster, inspired confidence, felt better, blah blah blah.

  • 9 6
Does it bother anyone else that we get a 'review' at the same time as a press release AND a giant banner ad at the top? I mean, there's no way there isn't a ton of money pushed for this type of write up, right?
  • 6 3
or you can put the conspiracy theory aside :-) It's just smart marketing by both sides. All the reviews are done ahead of time with all MTB media outlets in one place and they are forced to sit on the content quietly until the product release date. The media outlets need bike review features as much as the brands for their own page views. As for the ads and web features... well would't you want to run an ad on a major website the day your product is launched? And if you are the website you want to run the review the day the content embargo is lifted just like very other media outlet, and of course you'd be dumb not to solicit ads to run concurrently. But all the money in the world won't buy you a favorable review, and there have been plenty of product launches on PB and other sites with that have been far from favorable.
  • 5 5
@davetrump: No conspiracy theory, just hard for me to really take any of the info too seriously when it's so well orchestrated with the vendors.
  • 16 3
@Klainmeister: right... shame on them for being organized around a product launch.
  • 4 3
@davetrump: Press release is different than a review. If you're going to spend 25k for a press release, banner ad, and other marketing, do you think that influences an 'unbiased' review?
  • 7 0
@Klainmeister: like I said... I don't believe in all the conspiracy. Having worked for many media outlets on both sides of the coin, I still stand by it that the guys who ride the bikes and write the reviews do so independently and write how they feel freely. I have never had my words changed or asked to sweeten a review ever by any editor or marketing manager.

If you think everything is bought and paid for why would you even bother reading? Every major product launch is done this way including the most recent by Devinci and YT. All the reviews of the SB5.5 on Vital, Bike Radar and Bike have been pretty similar to PB's without the banner ad placement you are questioning, so perhaps the reviewers just plain liked the ride ???

It's simply all sides aligning to maximize exposure of a product launch. It's not trading ad space for good reviews.
