New Shoes From Ion, Mavic, Shimano - Eurobike 2016

Sep 1, 2016 at 11:37
by Mike Kazimer
In addition to all the shiny new bikes and components, the exhibition halls at Eurobike are full of footwear and apparel aimed at everyone from super-classy commuters to riders who venture out in Arctic-like conditions. On the mountain biking side of things, it seems as if there are more options than ever aimed at trail riders in search of performance oriented shoes that don't turn into ice skates when they're used off the bike. What follows are a few new kicks from Ion, Mavic, and Shimano.

Ion shoes
Ion is expanding their line of soft goods with the addition two new mountain biking shoes. The Rascal (140 Euro) is meant for everyone from trail riders to enduro racers, and uses laces combined with a switchback-shaped Velcro strap.
Ion shoes
The asymmetrical cuff keeps those ankles protected from crank arm impacts.

Ion shoes
The shape of the strap system is meant to lock the big toe joint down and keep a rider's foot from sliding around.
Ion shoes
A flat portion around the cleat area helps the shoes play nice with clipless shoes that use a wider platform.

Ion shoes
The Raid Amp (120 Euro) is Ion's flat pedal shoe, with a sticky rubber sole developed in conjunction with Suplest, a Swiss shoe manufacturer.
Ion shoes
Raised squares underfoot are meant to provide non-slip grip, while the ridges at the front and back of the shoe help increase hiking traction.

Shimano ME7
As part of Shimano's Mountain Enduro series, the ME7 is geared towards, you guessed it, enduro racers, or pretty much anyone who likes riding their bikes up and down hills. The shoes use a sole the was designed with Michelin, with a dual density rubber for extra grip on those slippery off-bike excursions. A Velcro cover hides the speed lacing system, and a ratcheting buckle is used to snug down the upper portion of the shoe. MSRP: $200.

Shimano AM5
The AM5 isn't a completely new model for Shimano, but it's now available in this urban camo color scheme.

Mavic Deemax Pro
Mavic's DeeMax Pro shoes (189 Euro) look like they could double as mountaineering approach shoes, with a beefy sole and reinforced lace eyelets.

Mavic Deemax Elite
The DeeMax Elite (140 Euro) isn't quite as stiff as the DeeMax Pro, and use a lace cover with a slightly smaller upper Velcro strap.

Stevie Wonder your an awesome musician, but please stop designing mtb shoes!!!
  • 14 1
@owl-X: Just to be a real nerd. Stevie Wonder suffered Retinopathy of Prematurity shortly after he was born, which damages the blood vessels within the eye and causes the retina to detach. The blindness that results can vary enormously from loss of fine detail vision to total darkness with many steps between, Stevie may have some degree of ability to sense motion with his eyes, but has nothing like what you or I would consider sight.

Why can't anyone make a DH shoe with the option to put the cleat further back, like just in front of center? Just extend the cleat slots a couple inches. The FiveTen Impact is close but I would still prefer it back an inch or so.
  • 4 2
Because just in front of center is just behind the ball of your foot which would cause a lot of foot pain for 99% of people.
  • 6 0
specialized dh shoes let you go place the cleat pretty far back. further then the Five Tens. Was maxed out with the Five tens but on the specialized I still have some room to play with and the the cleat is already further back then it was on the Five tens. Just in front of center does not sound like a good time but being able to put the cleat a little further back helps me with keeping my heels down
  • 4 0
Too far back and your toe strikes the crankarm when attempting to clip out in the horizontal crank position. A little contact is OK, too much can = blown knees.
  • 1 0
@meafroninja: I'll have to check those out! And yeah thats my issue with clip-less pedals, its hard to keep my heels down
  • 1 0
@JustinVP: Oh thats a good point, I guess there would have to be balance there
  • 9 1
Skechers, take note. All these guys have trumped you for ugliest shoes.

I can't bear to scroll back up the page to look at these

I'm really thinking that ME7 is going to be my next shoe. I have been running the old AM5 for a long while but the cross between XC boot and enduro like build of the new ME7 has got me excited. And the little neoprene sleeve will be nice when shit gets nasty or loamy, keep some of the earth out of my shoes Smile
  • 1 0
Or you can get the SH-M200 on special, which are pretty much the same shoes.
  • 2 0

  • 1 0

  • 7 4
Look Siiiir! The finest artists of Enduro legion designed these shoes. We will call them Deemax and make our sponsored DH athletes wear them. We will make them wear Enduro colors. In this way we will make downhill fans like Enduro. Do you see Siiir? Do you understaaaaand?
  • 2 0
Enduro legion needs its crayon rights taken away
  • 3 0
Yes, another platform shoe. Hopefully, the rubber is properly sticky (unlike Specialized), and hopefully Ion builds this on a regular or perhaps wider last than what you would get from 5-10 or Adidas (who have the sticky rubber - but also painfully narrow toe boxes).
  • 1 0
You must have a super wide foot. Never heard anyone in my years working in climbing, and biking shops call 5.10 narrow. And I've certainly worn just about every 5.10 model as well.
  • 7 1
Holy crap on a cracker, these shoes are bad.
  • 6 0
Is it too hard to design a MTB shoe that looks nice?
  • 6 0
Hideous. They look like corrective shoes for clowns.
  • 2 0
I like the Shimano's Mountain Enduro series, the ME7 shoe. I liking riding my bike up and down hills. Pretty spot on description of what I like to do on my bike. Though I wish it had lights in the heels and electronic laces enclosure system.
  • 2 0
If you can't get off your bike and walk into a store to buy something without getting beat up - then that shoe has got to go. Why are they still turning out road bike ugly shoes! Make it look like a hiking shoe. A normal everyday hiking shoe.
  • 2 0
You might get beat up,but at least no one in their right mind will steal them from your feat.
  • 2 0
Just copy a vans or vision streetwear high or low; offer in black, gray, dark red, nvy blue...its that ez
  • 3 0
Now if only Shimano Oz brought AM5s into Oz at all... in black they look good, the urban camo AM5 is about the only decent looking shoe in this bunch of "look at me i'm enduro" shoes
  • 2 0
Agree. They should bring out the AM5 in a flat pedal model.
  • 3 1
 Ion Design Team: .
But how do we get the strap from down here to up here?
Oh we'll just run it diagonally.
Don't you think that'll look funny?
No we'll colour them blue, people will love it.
  • 1 0
Does anybody on PB know what happened to Shimano Shoes? They don't seem
offer half sizes anymore, only whole sizes. There is no contact info that I can find on the Shimano website. What's the deal? I need a 44.5, that's the way it is. 44 doesn't work, and 45 doesn't work. I guess I need to switch shoe brands after so many years.
  • 1 0
You're right, they stopped making half sizes. Giro does, though. Smile
  • 1 0
I'm pretty sure they still make half sizes for the higher end models. They use a few different lasts across models too, so maybe just give the model you want a try anyway, it might fit. I'm a 46Wide, 45.5Wide and a 46 across 4 different Shimano shoe models.
  • 1 1
Just add inner soles to a 44.
  • 1 0
@Unscathed: I've checked on hibike.com, who has the latest models and only full sizes are available. www.hibike.com/shimano-sh-me7g-spd-shoes-mtb-shoes-grey-p34777321645f3fab854b2534d78849e6

I wish someone would make a flat shoe with a lace cover or non-lace closure. I generally don't have issues but I don't like to have my laces flopping around by the chain ring. Are any of these for flat pedals?

 Shimano AM7 & AM41
  • 2 0
I love that glue on those DeeMax Elite shoes. One look and you can tell that it's a quality product and included in price is that motherbithes disco 80's look that you always wanted.
  • 3 0
You all know that Mike Kazimer blew up that image of those atrocious orange and blue Deemax's because he knew we'd hate them?!!!? Well played sir...
  • 1 0
Ion went full enduro with those shoe colors. And what's up with Mavic? those shoes look crampon compatible. I like the new Shimano Crossmax shoes but can I pick with compound Michelin put in the sole--wets, intermediates, or slicks?
  • 1 0
for $12 -15 Tap Plastics will cut out a pair of thin acrylic " inserts".
trace out a pattern from an insole from a sneaker you like .
my pattern fits into my vans old skools that are a 1/2 size larger.
with the plastic inserts, they're slightly stiff, but w/plenty of pedal feel.
real decent grip too

I'm curious if a company has ever manufactured a shoe that not one single person bought. This might be the opportunity.
  • 1 0
Is there any company that designs stealth looking shoes for flats? like vans or just normal skate shoes but work well on vans? I only ride casually but always go through town to get to my destinations and i don't ever wear a full kit shorts shirt helmet and my vans. But i'd love dedicated flat's shoes.
  • 2 0
five ten? e.g. freeriders? Or just put stiffer insoles into skate shoes
  • 1 0
 - What are your MTB shoes?
- FiveTen freerider
- And, just in case that you have to change them, Which ones will you buy?
- FiveTen Frerider

Holy Molly....seeing ''that things'' they call MTB shoes..... I hope Fiveten keep the Freerider model alive forever....
  • 1 0
Finally! Engineers have determined the need in the MTB market for riders like me who are tired of my shoes not getting any attention as I scorpion into the dirt after pogoing over the bars on a trail I do not have the skill for but try to ride anyways.

Observer before: "Damn, that's gonna hurt!"
Now: "Whoa, you see those shoes?"

From all of us to all of you cross-eyed colorblind sons of bitches, thank you!
  • 4 0
shit shit shit and more shit
  • 2 1
I give up. I'll just buy some five ten stealth rubber (they sell it for fixing climbing shoes) and stick it to the sole of a pair of Nike SBs or New Balances. The mountain bike shoe industry doesn't seem to have a clue.
  • 3 1
Just when you thought shoes could not possibly be any uglier. Then these were made and the bar was lowered once again. It has to hit the ground at some point.
  • 1 0
I believe the last one are digging past rock bottom.
