New Shoes From Shimano & Apparel From Dakine - Interbike 2018

The ME7 is still positioned as Shimano's high-end enduro shoe, but it's received a few revisions, including a new ratcheting buckle, and more robust material over the toe. There will also be half sizes available, welcome news for those in-betweeners out there.

The GR5's sole is made with sticky rubber from Michelin, with a lugged pattern at the toe for extra traction off the bike. MSRP: $100 USD.

The AM5 has the same profile and lace-up design as the GR5, but with an SPD compatible sole. Not a fan of the yellow laces? A spare black set are included in the box. MSRP: $100 USD.


Dakine's New Apparel

Dakine's headquarters are in Hood River, Oregon, so they're no strangers to rainy weather. Their new rain jacket has a waterproof rating of 20,000mm/gm2, and will retail for $210 when it hits stores in February.

The Thrillium pant ($160) is made from a 4-way stretch Schoeller fabric, with perforated panels in the crotch and waist area to help keep air flowing. It's aimed at gravity riders, with stretchy room to fit knee pads, like Dakine's new Mayhem hardshell pads ($100), underneath.

The Thrillium glove has a Pittard goat skin palm, and a thin, stretchy panel over the back of the hand. MSRP: $45.

The final piece of the Thrillium collection is this long sleeve jersey, which has an interior glasses wipe and a drop hem to keep it from riding up when you're speed tucking down the hill. Shown is the Team Aggy edition, which retails for $70.

 @richierocket: It's bescause you don't really know yet Decathlon in Northen America : Nice technical gear for a really cheap price ! Example : Heart beat monitor belt Decathlon = 17£ vs Polar = 70£

I own this belt since 1 year and it works with all my devices perfectly ...

 The AM5's are (were?) great shoes. I may be missing something in the pictures, but lack of strap across the top for stability and lace retention seems like a bad idea.

 @MDHunter117: yea that jacket has a spray 2000mm waterproof coating. Dakines is 20 000mm yea there's a difference

 @richierocket: I bought a decathlon jacket years back it it pretty decently waterproof has lots of features - cost me 60 pounds though not 20 - I seem to remember rejecting the 20 quid one as it felt like a plastic bag with a zip.

But generally decathlon is a good place to buy sensibly priced kit made with the tears of Vietnamese children. That's not to say the Dakine stuff is any less laced with the hopes and dreams of a third world baby of course.

 @richierocket: I own that very jacket and it's pretty funny some one linked to it as it's the first one I thought of. The Decathlon jacket is in no way suitable for riding-only at a push, commuting in light rain for a short period of time.I have had it for 3 years and whilst waterproof it's not breathable enough (spoiler: you can't have both) to do heavy excercise in let alone MTB. It's not a strong enough material either. I use it purely as a casual shower proof jacket off the bike. Given the price difference, id expect the earth of the Dakine one- especially for MTB use.

 I know on 2-way trails I like to be camouflaged to better sneak up on and scare oncoming traffic.

 @nickkk: you can DEFINITELY have very waterproof and breathable at the same time.

I've used great stuff from Endura, Bontrager, Showers Pass, and more.

The catch is, it will be neither cheap ($150-$400) nor durable (1-2 seasons of pacific northwest)

so yeah, unless you ride hard in the rain in a chilly place all the freaking time, layering/merino and sucking it up is probably the way to go.

 Wow I'm loving those shoes. Last year's Shimano shoes were the ugliest shoes in all of MTB but suddenly they knock it out of the park?? Fine, they win, I'll buy these also.

 Small bit of current Shimano ME7 shoe feedback -
Disappointing really. They're really flex and mushy and neither the top or even sole is remotely waterproof. Your feet get instantly wet, just by walking on moist ground.
Why so flexy too?

 My ME7 are great. I had a warranty issue with their outsole breaking after 1 season but the distributor send me new ones. I definitely wouldn't say that they are flexy. They are pretty stiff, but still comfortable to walk in. Definitely stiffer than my XC5.
They definitely aren't waterproof as you say, but where did Shimano label them as such? At least they dry pretty fast. Btw you can't have a shoe that is both waterproof and breaths well at the same time...

 They have breathable mesh over the toes, and I love them for that. Definitely use different shoes on rainy days, but when its 32C out my feet don't sweat or swell as much as in other shoes.

 Uhh... nope. My ME7s were the best shoe since the MT200 until they gave their life on spring hike-a-bikes. Then Shimano graciously replaced them.

 My wife got me a pair of the Bontrager waterproof socks for Christmas. They are amazing. That way you don't worry about waterproof shoes that often don't dry out too quickly.

 I guess I'll go back to XC race shoes which are properly stiff. Maybe that's why I found ME7 shoes flexy.
If it's not mega stiff then then I just don't see the point (arf)

 @TheJD: Same problem, outsoles breaking near the cleat on the ME7 (1 pair) & MT200 (2 pairs). I wish Shimano could figure this out, otherwise great shoes!

 Shimano needs to make their shoes wider. Toe box is like a vice grip.

 Sorry, but like so many other mtb shoes, the new Shimano's look like they belong in a bowling alley. Just awful to me.
I'm just waiting patiently for the current trend in 70s colors to go away. Lived through it once, don't need it again! Smile

 Since DaKine seems to enjoy naming clothing after trails and trail networks in Oregon and southern Washington, it would be really great if they would actually donate some time and money for trail-building and maintenance and mtb trail advocacy especially in the Portland area (other than self promoting at races)

 Where I primarily ride sticks and twigs get caught in any kind of ratchet system and jam them so it's hard to get the shoes off after riding. I really like my Shimano AM 45 which are laced with a Velcro attached cover. A bonus is that the laces don't get covered with poison oak tannins (which I also ride through). They offer great protection but are a tad bid wide which hinders rotation/release from clipless pedals, and they are HEAVY. I would love more covered lace options. There aren't too many out there.

 i've been using GR9's this season, have had Links previous. not even close to true. Links soles gripped like a pile of garbage. these are same level i used to enjoy with Freeriders. I bought Links because i wanted those all red ones, and had a disappointing season the entire time i owned them as far as my feet were concerned and staying planted to pedals.
