Pinkbike Poll: Are You Shopping for MTB Deals on Black Friday?

Nov 22, 2022 at 11:42
by Mike Kazimer
Even just looking at a photo of a mall makes me anxious and uncomfortable.

Black Friday has never been my thing – I'm not a fan of rampant consumerism, and I hate malls, so there's really no reason I'd ever find myself waiting in line to fight for a new big screen TV or some other similarly silly electronic gadget. Watching people throw elbows as they try to snag the latest must-have gift makes me worry more than usual about the future of the human race; it's hard to envision a peaceful, happy utopia when faced with a video of an enraged mother punching someone in the face over an overpriced piece of plastic.

All of that said, plenty of people do enjoy shopping for good deals and deep discounts this time of year, and for us mountain bikers, well, it might actually be a decent time to go shopping. Just keep your hands to yourself, please.

The frenetic pandemic-fueled bike craze has subsided, forcing online and brick-and-mortar retailers alike to assess their inventories as winter arrives in the Northern Hemisphere. The reduced demand could mean deep discounts are on the way, at least in the cases where a retailer was overly optimistic in their ordering.

By the time you read this I'll hopefully be deep in the woods, miles away from any cash registers or computer screens. That's good news for me, but it also means I don't have any screaming deals or Black Friday specials to share – I'm leaving that up to you, the clever commenters. Think of it as crowd-sourced coupon hunting – where have you found the best prices on all things mountain bike related?

Are you planning on shopping for mountain bikes parts or gear on Black Friday?

Let us know in the comments - where are you finding the best prices on all things mountain bike related?

Most of the sales are just 2019 regular pricing

@oregontrail67: true but the cost of a container has gone down across the board. (It’s paywalked but you can view the graphs to get the idea)

“The year 2021 saw an especially steep increase in global freight rates, reaching a record price of nearly 10,400 U.S. dollars in September 2021. In October 2022, the global freight rate index stood at 3,100 U.S. dollars.”

www.statista.com/statistics/1266618/china-eastern-asia-to-north-american-west-coast-container-freight-rates

Speculating here - factor in inflation and typical corporate 4Q behavior this is profit taking to preserve margins. The Black Friday sales are not “sales” in a manner of speaking but more or less taking advantage of consumer price desensitization and the “finger-quotey 2023 recession.” I think the only deal out there is clearance Raceface Next R cranks only because the next generation product is set at the prior market price.

www.chainreactioncycles.com/mobile/fi/en/manitou-mezzer-pro-boost-mountain-bike-fork/rp-prod188906

27.5 riders might also enjoy the discounted wtb trail boss and judges, on both crc and wiggle
  • 1 0
@letsgethurt: yeah.. already run a mezzer on my 27.5, wanted to uprgrade the 29er

Obviously with all those different standards (axles, freehubs) they may not work for everyone. But with me running 26" wheels, 100x15 in the front and 142x12 in the rear, they'd actually fit my bike and the inner rim width isn't bad either. I just happen to have wheels already but otherwise these seem really nice at 150GBP for a set.

I got an email telling me my electricity is doubling in price next year. Now I know why is called black Friday. Hello, darkness my old friend!
  • 3 0
Interesting, our rates went down province wide 1.5% in 2020, and we were recently given a $100 credit on top of electricity already being relatively cheap at $0.0969 per kWh.
And of course, people still complain about Crown Corporations.
  • 3 1
You live in New England? I heard that BS is happening there. I have solar panels and my gas and electric is only $80/ month in 2500 sq.ft. home.
  • 3 0
@woofer2609: must be nice to be in BC! You guys have some of the best electricity rates in North America. Ontario is a whole other story!
  • 2 0
@privateer-wheels: it does help takes the sting off $2.45 litre gasoline
Electric cars can't come soon enough IMO.
  • 1 0
@woofer2609: electricity is currently around €0,70/kWh and gas is around €3 per kubic meter ($0.09/cubic feet) here in the Netherlands. The government is temporarily capping prices next year to soften the blow for citizens. Energy companies will then be compensated by tax payers' money, so it feels a bit like pumping money around without any useful effect.
So, no new fancy bike for most people here...
  • 4 1
@woofer2609: and in turn, those electric cars will quite likely, increase the price of your electricity!
  • 1 1
@woofer2609: Learn to gloat less abrasively
  • 3 0
@Steventux: Why would I gloat about paying the highest gasoline costs of any jurisdiction in North America? I'm simply stating that those who bemoan crown corporations and think that private enterprise is the be all end all often forget that private corporations answer to their shareholders only, and will always be profit driven while Crown corporations are set up to benefit the citizenry first while often turning a marginal profit that is put back into the system. At the same time providing an equal or better service at a cost similar or less than that of a private corporation.
  • 2 0
@Mac1987: OUCH! It would appear that electric cars wouldn't be much of a benefit cost wise in your country.
  • 1 0
@woofer2609: in fairness, BC electricity prices are low more because of the source of generation, rather than who owns and operates the system.

"Private corporations answer to their shareholders only" - this is not true in the Utility sector, not by a long shot. Privately owned Utilities have to answer to a Utilities Board, as do provincially owned Utilities.

"Crown corporations are set up to benefit the citizenry first while often turning a marginal profit that is put back into the system." - Provincially owned Utilities generally have a comparable ROE to privately owned. Though you are right, dividends get paid back to your province, which should reduce the amount the collect from tax payers.

"At the same time providing an equal or better service at a cost similar or less than that of a private corporation." - this is often not the case, unfortunately. Perhaps not in BC, but across Canada as a government has done as much harm as good, and probably more harm in general in the energy sector than well regulated private entities ever could!
  • 4 0
@woofer2609: Fair point well made, our energy sector is following the trend of our privatized railways. Privately owned, publicly bailed out.
  • 1 0
@woofer2609: if using quick chargers on the road, a diesel or petrol car with decent fuel economy is around 30% cheaper at the moment. Subsidies and principles are the only reason electric cars are remotely interesting right now, and the subsidies will be gone in 2024.
  • 2 0
@Mac1987: That's why I think the Chevy Volt was ahead of its time. 100kms all electric range, and then crossed over to gasoline power to generate enough electricity at a very economical rate. Wish they made a truck version of it.
  • 1 0
@privateer-wheels: I'd say it's a combination of both re. low energy prices in BC, but yes, hydro has the advantage of being able to effectively store potential energy . Other Canadian jurisdictions could really get on board with off hour reduced rates instead of selling wholesale energy at a discount during low demand times as you can't shut down natural gas or coal plants for the night. Even 30 years ago when I lived in Britain the dishwasher and clothesdryers were on timers to take advantage of low rates at 3 in the morning.
You are correct, there are utilities boards, but here they just approved a 10.2% hike in natural gas costs (privately owned), and they have zero authority over gasoline or diesel prices. I have never in 30 years seen anything close to a 10.2% increase in electricity costs.
Crown corporations go sideways when corrupt politicians use them as revenue generators, legacy projects, or appont their cronies to the board, which unfortunately, does happen.
All good points you have made.

I've been disappointed with bike industry black friday (or all holiday season in general) sales for years. Most of the deeply discounted items are old/obsolete stock or extremely specific and obscure. Sure, I could save $5 on an 11-speed XT chain in anticipation of installing it mid season next year (drivetrain is pretty fresh right now), but it's just not worth the early spend. The entire bike is dated right now and I'm itching for a new one. I haven't seen any sales on race level enduro bikes never mind deep discounts on them. I would definitely jump on a savings of $3000 on a big ticket item.

  • 18 0
@privateer-wheels: hmmm won’t let me apply it to eewings. Lame.
  • 2 0
@rick26: That is a massive discount! I'd argue that this particular bike borders on the obscure since flight attendant doesn't appeal to everyone and they've taken a bike with a stratospheric price tag and made it competitive (very competitive?) with a more typical race level build.

In addition, it appears that they're attempting to clear out stock since the medium and large (my size) sized are sold out.

I get that companies have no motivation to sell a product at a discount that they could easily sell at a higher price. My issue is with all the hype around black friday, cyber monday, boxing day etc. In a lot of cases, there's just not that much discounted product worth getting excited about.

Considering this is the best time of the year to upgrade, and usually the only time of the year I do, yeah.

Nukeproof Horizon pedals for $51
Brand-X Ascend dropper for $71
Nukeproof ARD inserts for $37
Giro gloves for $13
Specialized Butcher T9 pair for $76
Ergon GA2 fat grips for $27 (Not really a huge deal, just wanted grips to match blue anodized pedals)

All those prices are after shipping and tax.

I'd have gone for the $40 OneUp composite pedal deals floating around (Jenson and others). Otherwise, nice!
  • 2 0
My brand x dropper has been crazy solid, still hasn't needed a full overhaul in almost three years. The Horizon wheels were on sale as a set with inserts and sealant for like $350 when normally $700. Definitely some big sales out there. Most are just small 10%'s off.

I'm assuming this is CRC/Wiggle? If it is, that is crazy that they are selling and shipping to the US for cheaper than the UK prices!

I love these kinds of protest against Black Friday:

I buy t-shirts and hoodies from a company called Nikin, a Swiss company that sources and produces clothing in Europe. They plant 1 tree per item you buy from them. But, for stuff bought on Black Friday they plant 2 trees per item.

I buy organic wine from a shop that sells organic wine only. On Black Friday they have a 10% mark-up.

I’m not seeing much of anything for new sales most companies were posting deals on Monday, Fox discounted stuff like a month ago. I’m building a new bike so I’ll be keeping an eye out for the last few parts I need but already got a really good deal on frame, fork, wheels, bars/stem and crankset. Nice to see some solid sales for the first time in 3 years, feeling pretty good about my choice to keep riding the shit out of my 2014 bike the last couple years.
  • 3 1
I would shop for MTB deals on Black Friday if it was at a time of the year where I could enjoy it AKA "not winter". A 25% or 50% off something that's going to be stored for the next 6 months is money I could be using for something more useful right this moment.
  • 1 0
I ordered my last bike in early November last year. It took months for it to arrive, and months before my trails were rideable. By the time I took it on the trails the bike cost close to $1000 more online.

I bought a new bike (first full suspension after a dozen years of riding) earlier this week, so no more buying for me. Got a killer deal and i cant wait till it shows up!

 @mikekazimer:
Watching people throw elbows as they try to snag the latest must-have gift makes me worry more than usual about the future of the human race
this phrase explains exactly what I feel when I see people getting in a consume rage on black Friday
  • 3 1
There’s no such thing as deals anymore on anything, seems like once covid drove prices up on some things everyone else got on the bandwagon and put prices up the bike industry included. The sport will become unrealistic for alot of people in the future
  • 2 0
most of the MTB deals in New zealand are rubbish, Cheaper deals a month or two ago... Certain places have hiked prices and then "black friday" deal down to normal price.

Commencal have some epic deals going, if i hadnt commited to Nukeproof and Canyon for 2023 already i wouldve bought one... But considering it anyway even despite their new bike is coming very soon
  • 2 0
Paying full pop for this bike gear is dumb. You goda get the deals, shoes, tires, grips, pads. All consumables will ware out. Might as well have some on hand at a discount, rather than waiting for them to inevitably ware out and pay full price.
Found max is tires at the turkey sale for $45. Got 5.10 shoes brand new for $50 a pair. Gloves $20. Did I need any at the moment…no. Will I need any of this in the near future…damn rights!

I’m waiting on a frame from New Zealand (Zerode) just got a new fork (Formula Selva Coil), otherwise I’m going riding a couple times today, then a couple more times over the weekend, might catch a movie, going with the family to paint and drink, probably eat too much, yeah, f*ck going shopping!

Everything for the half of the double...
  • 2 0
that is correct, especially reg bike clothing
  • 2 1
LOL, Canadian marketing was the first to ruin Black Friday. Then, all the westernized nations joined in to cash in on the jingle. So, it's Christmas in July, Black Friday at the beginning of November. Cyber Monday coinciding with an extra week long of post-Black Friday. And finally, Boxing Day sales from Tuesday after Cyber Monday until first week into the new year! So, if you have 6 months of sales, Black Friday and Boxing Day sales aren't anything special anymore! And for finding any good deals on bike stuff - good luck!

 RIP A&B Sound.

Most Black Friday "deals" have been Lucy holding and pulling away the football at the last second.

No thanks.

60% off and that would be tempting
  • 5 0
@alexisfire: It's already some of the best priced stuff without a discount
  • 1 3
@DizzyNinja: Then that just makes the discount even smaller!

Outbound lighting has a pretty good sale right now

Just woke up from my siesta.

The stuff you actually want to have costs mostly the same. Only deals are for things that are not interesting. If there was a -50% deal on eewings, ok. But not at 25% on gx.

not buying anything as I'm working retail, i do however like answering people who ask for Black Friday deals (in a store that basically just got their winter inventory) "we're in Canada, why would we celebrate a US holiday?
  • 2 0
To be fair black Friday and black Wednesday aren't American holidays either.
  • 2 0
Got a stem from raceface, but was already planning on buying it, so just a nice bonus that it was 30% off
  • 3 0
This is exactly how I view black friday. If I'm already planning on getting something, sure I might wait to see if there's a deal on it, but I don't really go out of my way to buy stuff I wouldn't have otherwise because it's black friday

What about: Friday is a workday. There may be some time to post a PB message here and there, but not to leave and visit shops. Tomorrow morning I'll ride my bike.

That picture in the article scares me too. But for you as a bike(component) reviewer, aren't you too busy riding stuff you need to test/check/review for work to actually buy stuff that doesn't need to be reviewed? You can have only one rear mech at a time, two tires at a time etc. It may be different for PB readers who did actually wear out a years old component and need a replacement. Not meant as a nag, just curiosity. Would you even feel the need to buy a new component when you already have the next in line that needs to be reviewed. Or isn't it quite like that?
