Darren Berrecloth Canyon Sender

Darren Berrecloth is aboard possibly the most appropriately named bike – ever – for the Red Bull Rampage: the Canyon Sender. The bike was developed more as a downhill race bike, but that doesn't mean it can't be pulled into duty to take on the steep ridges and mega hucks that await the veteran competitor. Berrecloth made his first Red Bull Rampage appearance back in 2002, finishing third, and has consistently remained a podium threat with his technical big mountain lines.

The Sender uses a Horst link suspension design that has an additional link driving the shock for its 200mm of rear travel. Canyon call this configuration TIPS, short for Triple Phase Suspension.

The green machine is decked out with a DVO Emerald inverted fork up front...

And a DVO Jade coil shock in the back.

Spank's Vibrocore handlebars have a foam core that's designed to help reduce the vibration the reaches a rider's hands, something that could be useful when dealing with the big impacts found on Berrecloth's line. Darren even has his own signature grip from Lizard Skins, the Bearclaw lock-on.

Berrecloth's running Shimano Saint brakes and drivetrain, Spank wheels, and 27.5" Maxxis tires - a Minion DHF up front, and a Highroller II in the rear.

When you have a nickname as cool as 'The Claw' you get custom top tube stickers.

Mmmmmm, DVO!!! That's one sexy bike!
  • + 35
 Hard as diamonds right now.
  • + 2
 But why the double bumpers?
  • + 5
@Caiokv: Why not? Added protection for sure.
  • + 11
@Caiokv: yeah i would still run the fork bumpers even with bumpers built into the frame....that fork is freakin expensive lol
  • + 2
I always thought that the built in bumpers would be enough. But I've never owned a bike with integrated bumpers. Also, my 380's bumpers are always shifting...
  • + 12
@Caiokv: Darren drinking mexican beer after his run !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great respect for the guy to keep going that big after many years.

Saludos de México
  • + 3
 @lalodh: Modelo, right?
  • + 1
Other than the fact that the bike is screaming for green Emeralds!!
  • + 1
 @MTB-Colada: Yes.
I dont drink beer but have heard that is one of the best ones in the world.

Cheers
  • + 2
@Caiokv: Of course the integrated bumpers would be enough... for any normal person. But they ain't hucking off Rampage!! When those bikes go tomahawking off a cliff/ridge, its enough to split forks in half and crumple wheels like tin cans.
  • + 1
 @Jamesb15uk: fair point!
  • + 4
@Caiokv: and if you look there's a paint chip on the left side of his top tube which could have easily been caused by his fork's top crown hitting the frame. maybe he needed the other bumper to keep it from hitting

First Rampage - 2002. That's 14 years of sending it. Stunning that he still competes at this level.
  • + 0
back then rampage was not held every year. glad it is right now
  • + 57
It looks like painting the Fox SLS coil didn't quite work out.
  • + 1
Bring Ti back to the U.S. Support the few that are still here.
  • + 24
Canyon needs to sell a bike JUST like that! Take my money!
  • + 3
that will be 6000$++ bike? no?
  • + 3
 @Danpyo: Yeah most likely.
  • + 8
 Minimum $8000 !
  • + 15
@RollinFoSho: top spec sender as is, is £3899/$4760 USD, and a DVO emerald from CRC is £440 cheaper than a fox 40, but some places it's around £100 less or the same as a 40, and it's the same for the rear shock the DVO jade is around £100-150 cheaper than a fox X2 coil, so a full DVO sender should be the same.
  • + 4
At LEAST give us more colours like that!
  • - 3
@RollinFoSho: I you zoom on the drop out's from gear side in the corner of the chainstay you will see small crack is already developed just bellow the cable, exactly where my friend's bike exploded Razz
  • + 2
@DragRider: pretty sure that's on the chainstay protector??
  • + 2
@DragRider: that's the chainstay protector, and the only slight bit of damage is a chip at the end of the dropout.
  • + 3
@DragRider: Do you mean at the chainstay or seatstay? The chainstay is protected and I cant find any crack. But at the junction of the seatstay and dropout some might see something like a crack. Do you mean that?
  • + 1
@GravityFan: You know what? I think @DragRider is telling the truth. If you look at the picture just above and forward of where the flip chip is on the adjustable dropout where the strut (another name for the piece running from derailleur to the upper linkage) hooks and look at the picture of the non-drive side strut is, it gives that impression.

Might just be a scratch from gravel/rocks/etc...but I'd love to see a pic of @DragRider s friends cracked strut too.
  • + 15
No barends? That makes me cringe even looking at it Confused
  • + 9
Ready at any time to take a nice core sample....
  • + 3
Holy S! You read my mind!!
  • + 18
Barends? I'm too old... I instantly thought of the bar extensions to make going up hill super rad dude in the early 90's. Reckon they'd fit right in at Rampage.
  • + 1
End caps, bar plugs, but not bar ends. And yes, that was my first thought as soon as I saw the pic. A nice big gaping hole in your thigh or rib cage.
  • + 14
Ditch the white seat ( soon to be brown ), but sweet otherwise!
  • + 6
It's split down the middle. Black on the drive side (top picture). I get what you're saying though. Black side fits in much better.
  • + 3
the seat is white on one side and black on the other
  • + 2
Put a nice Chromag seat on there ! It fits Claw's bear theme perfectly!
  • + 1
 Also, why 650b at Rampage?
  • + 1
@Coldspringer: Wait for 29ers soon. Should roll better through the gnarly stuff. Bigger arc for bigger mountain lines.
Just kiddin', but who knows where the companies will push their riders into.
  • + 1
@Coldspringer: I'm guessing it's because they only make a 650b bike. The could have put 26" wheels on it but ...
  • + 10
That has to be one of the best looking rigs. damn
  • + 9
holy crap that's the sexiest bike I have ever seen.

  • + 9
 @its-joe: fut off peter.
  • + 9
 I love it! Green Machine
  • + 1
I don't need a downhill bike, not one of this calibre, not really in the UK...but feck me sideways I've got a wad of cash coming to me in the new year and seeing this thing...a large proportion of that cash just got reallocated from being spent on the house!
  • + 0
It's so cool that this shock's spring is well hidden inside the frame. Seems like everything have to have some imperfections, otherwise this bike is one of the best lookin' i've seen.
  • + 4
 looks like a kawasaki
  • + 2
 Bike of the tournament IMO
  • + 0
Who wants his old bike for cheap? most the parts are brand new, i still can't believe someone hasn't bought this yet !

  • + 0
well, to be honest, the sender looks 1912394393429x better than the torque

thats my first thought

but the spec is amazing and the bike itself is probably still really good (I've ridden neither of them)
  • + 0
 @jaycubzz:

yeah i agree but the sender will cost 17127843873498739x better lol

the sender rides way better hands down
  • + 1
Mmmm. I can't wait for my first sender...
  • + 1
Looks so much better without the fender...
  • + 0
Don't read this - the live feed is running - no audio yet but 10 mins to go......
  • + 0
They should change it from Triple Phase Suspension to Triple Trajectory Suspension (TITS).
  • + 0
I'm gonna say it — the Sender has the hottest design for a stock DH bike (although this particular one isn't stock).
  • + 0
Sorry but the Maiden already takes that title bud!!!
  • + 0
Put this colour scheme into production on the sender please canyon! I will definitely buy this!
  • + 1
You better win the rampage this year with that machine Berrecloth!
  • + 1

  • + 0
Will there be a replay today? I have to go into work also happy rampage
  • + 0
That's sexy! When did the claw start running DVO?!
  • + 1
 Fit
  • + 0
Fork bumpers on both the fork and the frame ?
  • + 2
My guess is if you eat shit on a jump as big as the ones at rampage you want to have double the protection for your form/frame. Its not like they need the turning radius.
  • + 0
Alot of guys are running the 180mm rear disc i've noticed
  • + 0
that rig looks the biz for sure
  • + 0
 Stoked on the DVO build.

  • - 3
No! NO!!! Why even freeriders are using now 27.5"? DA FAK NO!!!
  • + 1
Cuz that's the way it is!
  • + 2
If people gave me money to ride bikes I would ride a 36" wheel...just saying.
  • - 1

 IKR,looks like 26.
  • + 3
 its says 27.5
  • + 0
Were there any 26 hoops rolling rampage this year? Can't imagine sponsors would allow that.
  • + 0
 @onemind123: @onemind123: semanuk was on 26 i believe...
  • + 2
@ad15: cool, so 5% of them. Good to know 26 ain't dead. Just really badly wounded that's all.

Gonna be a sad day when I can't get current model tires for my 26.
