The Grim Donut is Already Spawning Imitations

Not a donut.

It looks like the Grim Donut may have inspired the crew at Alutech to try some radical geometry numbers of their own. Jürgen Schlender, the German company's founder, started posting teasers of the 'Armaggedon' (Karpiel may have some thoughts about that name) last week, and earlier today posted up a photo of the finished product. It doesn't sound like there are any plans for this to be a commercially available model - it's a test sled, a way to see how those seemingly out-there numbers feel on the trail.

The bike has a head angle of 57-degrees, a 81-degree seat tube angle, and a chainstay length of 428-440mm. Those are pretty close to the Donut's dimensions - even the 500mm reach number is the same, although the Pinkbike machine still has a steeper seat tube angle at 83-degrees and longer, 450mm chainstays.

Both bikes are set up with a 29" front wheel and 27.5" rear, and unfortunately neither one has room for a water bottle.

The Grim Donut
The real Grim Donut in all its glory.

Thanks to Singletrack magazine for bringing Alutech's creation to our attention.

@jorgeposada: Ocala is new to me (as is MTN bikes). The trails are "closed" - uh huh. So, we simply park in neighborhoods connected and ride (Santos/Greenway). There are trails we were at yesterday are Chuck Lenon park where the trails are open (under an hour west).

All in all, certainly not the mess and fiasco as where I used to live. The fools there can thank Obummer for the fact that they can not find medical care in a reasonable time frame any day, let alone these days.

Top tube length looks more reasonable on the Alutech. It may be just an optical illusion, but it looks relatively proportional to the overall dimensions. Seated riding position on the Grim Donut looks very cramped. And since Alutech actually build their own bikes I'm willing to bet their version will be (closer to) rideable. Kudos to PB for the concept though.

  • 7 0
I like Alutech, always ahead of everyone. While others are merely talking about it, they just actually put it out there. Just like the first 29" wheeled production DH bike which was also theirs.

By the time the Grim Donut is actually out there, they can call that one the imitation. After all, just because PB went all noisy on the internet doesn't mean Alutech didn't work on this development first.

Everytime I see a photo of the Grim Donut I feel sooo sorry for that Lyrik....that angle can't be good for the sliders/bearing overlap....
  • 2 0
I always felt that way too, but I wonder if it’s actually easier on the fork bushings since it can take the bump forces more on the horizontal plane as you would when you hit rocks and other debris on the trail. But, I’m no engineer and it’s been a couple decades since my last physics class.
  • 5 0
@whambat: it must be horrible for drops to flat though =S
  • 1 0
 @Archimonde: no doubt.
  • 2 2
Just have to land old school with a wheelie drop.
  • 6 1
@whambat: that would be even worse when the front wheel inevitably drops down. Landing very tilted towards the front could solve the problem
  • 1 0
@nhp890: well there would be less chance of going over the bars. I really don’t have an idea of how that bike would ride, but trials riders have been landing on rear wheels on insane drops to flats with full rigid for decades. Probably take more skill than I got to do it smoothly. However, I’d imagine that headtube junction would have to be as strong as hell to handle the vertical forces.

I have no idea of the amount of vertical vs horizontal forces a bike encounters on a typical ride. I’m sure someone has that graphed out somewhere. Now that we are seeing high pivot bikes take off in popularity largely because they absorb more horizontal force than a traditional pivot, I’m kinda curious of these force vectors. But like I said, it’s been a long time since my last physics class.
  • 1 0
@whambat: trials riders have nearly zero speed forwards when dropping, which makes it a lot easier to direct most of the force to the rear wheel. Pretty much impossible at speed.

I thought the merit of high pivot bikes is the rearward axle path? I may be completely wrong on this one though
  • 1 0

Going past reasonable was the entire point of the exercise. What's the point of making something that you can already buy?
  • 3 1
@PhillipJ: @FloImSchnee: Indeed. If you're going to go through the trouble to make a frame why not make it useable? Everything else on the bike is somewhat within reason. the HTA is just a bit too extreme to be useful. 60 would still be extreme but perhaps not as useless. Kudos for trying it as an experiment though.

You can buy a bike with absurd Geo from a few manufacturers. It can all be bought.

I suppose downhill drag races would be cool. These bikes are starting to resemble top fuel dragsters. Let's make them a little longer and build DH tracks with no turns (since these bikes can't turn anyway). Throw some rock gardens and drops in for fun.
