The New Rapha / Brain Dead Collection is Rave Ready

I'm not a fashionable person. My wardrobe consists almost entirely of well-worn jeans and t-shirts, and none of them have designer labels on them. When it comes to mountain biking, my clothing tastes are similar – I gravitate towards simple and effective designs, ideally in some shade of black.

Part of my job does entail testing the latest mountain bike apparel, which means that multiple times per year I'll find myself laughing out loud at the outfit I've put on, whether that's due to the garish color scheme, exorbitant price, or a combination of both.

Which brings me to the latest limited-edition apparel line from Rapha and Brain Dead. For riders that want to pay even more money for Rapha clothing, the collaboration includes jerseys, a wind jacket, a hip pack, and two pairs of pants – one pair for riding, and the other for trail building, although they look a lot more like what you'd see at a rave circa 1999.

photo
Don't you wish you were this cool? Trail maintenance pants: $200. Trail t-shirt: $60.
photo
Trail pants with glow-in-the-dark logos: $195. Windblock jersey: $152.

Going back to the whole 'I'm not fashionable' thing, I wasn't aware of Brain Dead's existence until recently. For those who have been living under a rock like me, the LA brand was launched in 2014 by Ed Davis and Kyle Ng, and bills itself as “A creative collective of artists and designers from around the world... Brain Dead is not one person, nor is it one idea. It sits in the space between people.” Cringey copy aside, according to Vogue Business sales were expected to exceed $10 million in 2021, so this isn't exactly a little mom and pop operation.

Were there mountain bikers clamoring for this Rapha x Brain Dead collab? Honestly, I don't know. For the hypebeasts out there, this could be the highlight of the week. For me, it's more amusing and a little confusing than anything else.

I think this is one thing all Pinkers can agree to hate together.
  • 654 32
Can we also hate the word ‘pinker’?

 @notthatfast: absolutely

Sorry to destroy the consensus, but despite never having heard of Brain Dead before, I like most of the collection (save the Trail Maintenance pants). I wouldn't consider buying it unless it was 75% or more off, but I still think it's kind of fun.

I basically just buy whatever color mountain bike stuff is on closeout, but I never really liked the earth tone trend any more than the previous loud colors trend.
  • 11 0
 @notthatfast: 2 pinkers 1 pair of $200 pajamas?
  • 34 2
Hate mode engaged at first glance. Hit boss level hate when I saw the price. Is this some kind of hollywood swanky fashion joke?
  • 31 6
any mtb gear that's referred to as a "collection" has missed its mark

When you see a market selling bikes for $10,000+ business people see suckers and will try and sell you a turd for a premium….enter brain dead + Rapha. We did this to ourselves, people see us as suckers and this is what we get. Guarantee I see this in my LBS soon and people on the trail wearing this stuff.
  • 19 1
@ElDebarge: I'm much less worried about this type of inflation than bike price inflation. You need to buy a specific bike to mountain bike (basically). So if the prices go up across the board, that prices some folks out. You don't need to buy mountain bike-specific clothing to mountain bike. This type of expensive clothing might be out there on the trails, but it doesn't effect the ability of someone who is willing to ride in a synthetic t-shirt and board shorts to get out there.

A $500 vs. $5000 bike is an absolutely totally different experience. A $15 sport shirt vs. a $150 short sleeve jersey is...maybe noticeable?

Instant agree. Clown pants, highwaters / floods, and 80s Jams patterns that failed then all now revived for the suckers nearest you to make riders look even more outta place in wild areas than some already do. Its enough that most (not all!) riders at 2+ in a group are usually talking at volume 11 but add the wackyass LA Shredder gear and - yeah, that's bad.

It honestly looks just as bad as all of the other clothing mountain bikers chose to wear.

What clothes do you wear to ride bikes?
  • 2 0
@peatshark: I just dislike most mountain bike clothing. It's like everyone wants to dress like juggalos when going out riding. It's all so terrible. I just buy the most plain workout clothing I can find. It is getting more difficult though.
  • 1 1
@matyk: hey, I don't know what juggalo means. But my solution to Not buying into trends is buying cheap, basic Dickies shorts and wearing a chamois under. Usually a wool t shirt or tech shirt as a base. Works for me.

For the first six years of mountainbiking, I wore cargo pants. Long cargo pants, cargo shorts... You could puts some tools in your pockets, some food. This is from back in the pre-downtubestage era kids.
  • 2 0
@vinay: I always used a fanny pack in the 90s, transitioned to hydration packs in the 00s, can fit way more trail beers in there comparatively. I always wonder how those who go on-bike storage for tools, snacks, and other items, carry enough beer with them. Cargo shorts... this is the way!
  • 1 0
@JarrodB: I only started riding mountainbikes in 2001. Cargo pants is what I had so that's what I used. Soon enough I also got myself a hydration pack and used that ever since. It must have literally saved my back a few times so I wouldn't ride without anymore. I don't have experience with fanny packs but the pack I have now does store the water low and the other stuff in a flat storage a bit higher and it is thin in the middle so that the two parts can move well with respect to each other. I slide their CE certified back protector in there which is a bit more reliable than water for protection. Cargo pants are ok for lighter stuff like food but something heavier and harder like a tool isn't too great. It hurts if you fall on it and if you pedal fast it drags the legs of your pants around your legs. I wonder how the brain dead ones were trying to solve this.

Fashion. One of the planets most wasteful & polluting industries. Look it up. Read it and weep fashionistas

Stop caring so much about what complete strangers think of you, and begin to careless and be yourself (without buying that junk above)
  • 6 4
So are you advocating for or against this product line? Because one of the reasons I won’t dress in this shit is because I’m afraid someone will see me in it. I don’t normally care what people think of my fashion, but I think this would be a level of embarrassment I just couldn’t handle. I would caution anyone considering wearing this to just think a little bit on how others would judge you in this case.
  • 3 0
@cristiantomlinson : By this logic, this goes for all new clothes, doesn't it? Use what you have, repair it when it is broken. Which implies it may actually be your cargo pants you'll be riding in. Old worker pants are pretty good for wet weather riding because they're strong and dry easily. People too bothered about what someone else is already wearing may actually trigger more waste (if the wearer feels intimidated and chooses to buy something else) than that it would reduce waste and pollution somehow.
  • 1 0
@vinay: Everyone should wear crustpunk trousers for years on end and sew patches on the holes.
  • 1 0
@suspended-flesh: I quit sewing in spots where the trousers are torn. Usually the material is so thin there already that it will just tear right next to it. I now glue the patches on. There is some special textile glue that works really well and keeps up even in the laundry.
  • 38 3

This is a dumb double standard. No one hates on Thomas lemoines outfits that are crazy colorful and out there a bit from the normal mtb standard, but a company puts out an interesting new line and everyone hates.
  • 5 0
@ridingbiking: IMO it has more to do with the price and the fact it is Rapha/ some dumb hype brand. Also $200 for "trail work" pants is just dumb.
  • 2 0

  • 1 0
@everythingsucks: a friend of mine degloved his ring finger while attempting to break into his house through an upstairs window. when he lost his footing the ring caught on a part of the mechanism and the weight of his body falling to the ground pulled off the skin.

skinned finger aside, he was ok. the keys turned up a while later in his car.

I bet all you haters all wear the same kits, almost carbon copies of what the marketing said to wear. Then on the streets, Jeans and a t shirt cuz no one will make fun of you for being the 9 millionth square of the day.

If you got it, rock it. Someone’s stoked on this kit and why not be happy for them? Bet the trail pants are comfy.

I was really looking forward for this even saved the release date. I am really disappointed about the riding shirt design. it just doesn't look like braindead and just looks like any other boring bikebrand designs. even reminded me of ION which is just NO!

i've long since stopped thinking bikers are stylish or cool and have long been aware that bikers will forever remain a conservative bunch with ugly tld, fox and flannel shirts.
i'm quite pleased when i tell people i love riding bikes and most things i do (work and leisure) has something to do with bikes and i get a "o really? you don't look like a biker at all" as an answer. Smile

Brain Dead does good collabs, if theres anyone who can blur the lines between streetwear and mtb its them. I can appreciate that they reached out to a legit company and its not a random Supreme collab like we see all the time. Listen, there's a whole world out there (outside of the woods) where people care about sneakers, other colors than Fox/TLD camo, japanese trends, niche brands that push contemporary art (like Brain Dead does), underground music influences and so on... so don't be a sheep and stop buying the same old Mx gear.
To me it sounds like your world of mtb taste is Nickelback and this is Nirvana. Disruptive now but let's talk in a few years when you'll get it Smile .

So, I assume those trail building pants are designed to hold the dirt in them so you don't need a wheel barrow.
  • 4 0
 Fuck Rapha
  • 2 1
And while you're at it, think about picking up some pit vipers, for that ultimate secondary school dropout pot smoking look. I love Rapha, but this is a mistake.
  • 1 0
I will not be wearing the trail maintenance pants at the next Maintenance Monday event here in town, or any thereafter... worn blue jeans and a tshirt for me thanks!
  • 2 1
Do you wish your carpenter pants with reinforced knees and weird bulgy pockets were also wildly expensive and hideous? Well Rapha has the trousers for you!
  • 2 0
As someone who organises and attends lot's of raves, I wouldn't be seen dead wearing this sh1te.
  • 1 0
They forgot to mention that any piece in this "collection" comes with a dangly cross earring and a free "How to Tik-Tok in your 40s to feel young again" guide book.

Is that Rapha's own marketing shot showing their pants aren't long enough? I abandon all hope (of ankle coverage).

Hmm, as long as there isn't a cockroach between them.
  • 1 0
I mean everything but the pants looks good to me. The price is dumb though.
  • 2 1

  • 2 0
