by Mike Kazimer

Watch as Sacha Earnest, Reece Wilson, Bodhi Kuhn, and Loris Vergier get up to speed in Spain. Loris is aboard a prototype aluminum frame that was created based on his ideal geometry - you can skip to 11:05 to learn a little more about it.

The details of Loris' custom frame are being kept under wraps for now (literally), but we'll have more details before racing begins next week in Scotland.

2024 races season, year of the bike diaper.

More aero and easier for mechanics (not as much cleaning, save money on bearing replacements). "We have to keep our proto under wraps" actually means "we're seeking marginal gains, both in competition and financially"

Diaper Truth will be revealed!

@Jvhowube: I wonder how much truth there is regarding the aero side of things? I know Bernard Kerr has mentioned a noticeable difference wearing tighter fitting clothes.

@ajaxwalker: form what I’ve read and heard on interviews with professional athletes, even the perception of advancing gains helps improve the state of mind thus translates to faster times. Mind over matter really is a huge deal when the results are determined by milliseconds.

I made one for my 5 year old bike. Knocked off 6 seconds from my PR last time out. Might start selling these as a side gig. Might make a skin suit for the entire front triangle.

Many moons ago when Luca Shaw was on the TLD team as a junior he was racing the status instead of the demo. As soon as he posted some solid results they got him on the demo QUICK. Can't have the freeridey bike making the race bike look bad .. ain't always the bike y'all.

@ajaxwalker: the UCI banned unibody bicycle frames like the Lotus 108 back in the 90s because they brought an "unfair" aerodynamic advantage over traditional "two triangle" frame construction. There is real time to be gained through aerodynamics in any discipline, but in a 3 minute downhill race for the world's fastest riders, reducing turbulence over the front triangle is likely only a very small marginal gain (tenths of seconds?). I'm willing to wager the teams using diapers/fairings have done timed testing, and equally willing to bet they're not going to publish the results, not least because they don't want to give the UCI any ideas.

@jeremy3220: The UCI will make a rule about how tight the suit can be to not negatively impact the image of the sport we can't watch anymore

@Jvhowube: Got to be savage in crosswinds though, which somewhere like fort bill would surely do more harm than good

@ajaxwalker: Trek & Tracey Moseley were properly wind tunnel testing Sessions years ago. Bike mods included HED deep rims, a small nose cone and a few other bits, then they studied the impact rider position & clothing had.
Unsurprisingly on faster courses, the effects would be tangible.
Mojo used to have some of their riders in skinsuits, Cedric Gracia famously wore a “skin & muscle” skin suit (probably for media as much as anything)

If you’re out on your own on a road bike, doing 20mph on a flat surface & zero wind, it takes a fair chunk of extra effort to get up to something like 25-26 (and hold it). The aerodynamic effects matter more as speeds go up.
With DH riders spending a fair bit of time anywhere from 20-40 mph, I’ve always been a little bit surprised that “aero” hasn’t been more of a thing, at least at the pointy end of racing.
I presume it’s partly imaged based, and from a strong desire not to return to lycra clad roots?

Reece! Great to see him back in something else than a freeride edit for once.

Stoked to see Sacha on such an awesome team. Hopefully mtb is far less toxic than bmx

Reece, 2024 comeback rider of the year. Loris could win on any track with a clean run, and Earnest showed some flashes that should scare all the girls. Sleeper team

When talking "sleeper", how about a shout out for Bodhi too. Keep an eye out for this kid!

props to Trek, this is a really good segment, really about the riders and not about the product they are trying to push. Also... Damn, Reece is one cool dude.

Looks like it’s a lower link driven high pivot or some sort of concentric BB link based on the way the chainstay moves when he’s bouncing on it in the pits at 12:00. Or I’m high.

Curious to see if Loris actually runs Pirelli for more than just photoshoots. Hard to see what he's got on in above photo. My guess is he'll be on the sharpie treatment again
  • 2 0
Look carefully at the sidewalls of the sharpied out tyres he is running... Only one company that has a Horse in their logo has that pattern in their casing molds.

So I missed where Kade is off to?

Not racing fulltime anymore just riding bikes for fun .... but injured now
  • 1 0
He was supposed to be a “free rider” under Trek and race under Union but like he said he got hurt
  • 1 0
He's moved to the C3 team, Trek's freestyle team with, Brandon and R dog etc
  • 1 0
I always considered Merv Hughes to have/had the best moustache in sport but Loris sir you are challenging this notion
