 @BCHolmesLR04: If you're crashing at Rampage you probably have bigger worries than a broken frame. Whereas at the dirt jumps, crashing is more or less frequent occurrence.

 Those Yeti 4X bikes were the shit back in the days - always dreamt of owning one while rocking a real steel DMR. Unfortunately no dentists on them, just the best knocking the teeth out of the competition..

 @8a71b4: I grew up BMX, many incredible riders (and some of the best) are on steel BMX bikes. That said, your comment is a deflection from this article ....DJ/slope 26" bikes. The top mountain bike slip style writers oftentimes crossover into the BMX world and can ride just about anything the BMX riders can hit and just as big. Alloy is "just as real" as steel

 @bman33: you’ve got it the wrong way round. It’s BMXs that come over to mountain biking and dominating (Nyquist Crankworks). It doesn’t happen the other way. There’s not a single slopestyle rider that would qualify for a bmx even let alone podium.

 @thenotoriousmic: not neccisarilly what I meant they can ride all the trail on their 26" That said, I grew up in the 80's racing BMX, then MTB and was around when guys like Lopes, King, Carter, Cully, etc... migrated to MTB and brought the skills up. That said, there are many riders nowadays that never rode BMX and are crushing MTB DJ especially. I 100% bet Semenuk could qualify for a BMX DJ or even street event. All you need to do is check is riding videos out. He even has a few out on a 20" Pretty bold of you to say some of the top guys couldn't handle it...

Different sports, but both sick.
It's weird because the best BMX trails are something special, steep beautiful flowy jumps.
Yet BMX dirt comps are always just an 8 pack of big jumps in a field.

Slopestyle is a middle ground with cool courses and decent bangers.

 @hgardner: he turned up at crankwork the biggest slopestyle event in the world came third after never riding a mountain bike before. A slopestyle rider would never accidentally get bronze at the X games just having a go.

 @thenotoriousmic: Funny, because in Dennis Enarsons podcast with Semenuk, they that when riding BMX with Semenuk, he was often the first (sometimes even first try) to land whatever tech line before the other pro BMXers. Emil right now is arguably doing tricks that are on par with peak BMX tricks in a contest setting. I don't see many BMXers nailing some of the combos Emil is doing, and certainly not with the amount of style and control he has if you compare box jump tricks to a regular jump trick in slopestyle. Obviously, BMX and slopestyle/dirt jump bikes are for different terrain, and certain tricks wouldn't necessarily carry over as well.

Nyquists runs were definitely cool and good and I loved seeing him on the podium that one time, but he repeats a lot of tricks, and I don't think he has the depth of tricks that the slopestyle guys have. He has heaps of experience, where taking his solid tricks on a BMX over to a MTB wouldn't be that much of a leap, and he stuck to those consistent tricks to get the 3rd place. I was surprised he got 3rd that time to be honest. Yes, 720 barspins are sick, but all his tricks are generally 360 combos with a Sui, X-up or a barspin. I don't see him doing double flips, cork 7s, any tailwhip combos etc. He did well enough on the doubles in slopestyle, but the top slopestyle guys generally push the envelope on features that AREN'T perfectly groomed trick jumps or they go so much harder on the doubles than the "regular" guys (Semenuk when he first cork 7ed the step down, Rheeder Flat drop flipwhipping, Rogatkin with his ridiculous spins, and Emil with his combo wizard and precision). Nyquist was never about to push slopestyle forward, but rather play it safe for a pretty decent result.

As @hgardner said, they are different sports at the end of the day, despite their similarities on paper, and it's proven that top BMXers so far cannot touch top slopestyle athletes and vice versa.

 @leon-forfar: those would be some of the vlogs I sometimes see him appear in. Like I said he’s really good and if he turned his hand to bmx instead of mountain biking I’m confident he would have been as successful in that as he was in mountain biking and yeah the standard is much higher in bmx especially the comp guys there’s no slopestyle rider that would be able to do what Nyquist did, you can say you don’t agree with it but it happened and nobody’s come close to doing it the other way.

 What would be the advantage? I've never heard one of our local DJ riders complain about strength, weight, or stiffness. They mostly want the bike to survive all the crazy stunts they attempt and that's about it.

 Carbon rims, cranks, handlebars are already being used on DJ bikes nowadays. Carbon frame is the next logical progression.

 @BikeTrials: I have so many questions. Who uses these components and why? Is it racers, pros...? Who's the broad market for DJs and what do they want? Do they want carbon? Are they willing to pay? What is the measurable benefit to them?

All the usual arguments for carbon don't seem to obviously apply here, like I said. It's not like DJ frames aren't strong enough or stiff enough as far as I can tell, and no one cares about weight (except maybe pros). And the locals I know who ride DJ really aren't interested in throwing down big cash on a DJ frame just to do it.

 @WaterBear: DJ riders absolutely care about weight, pros and non pros included. That's why people pay extra money on air forks over coil ones. Any gram you save makes it easier to jump and rotate in the air.

 They were great bikes that people my age dreamed of having (I was lucky enough to have 2 of them).
Then they abandoned metal so I lost my interest on them.

 I only have 1 Yeti product, the ARC hardtail. Have a few buds who on various SB's. With Yeti, name brand name first, but the frame quality is extremely high, well designed, and rides extremely well. Is it worth the premium price Yeti demands....up to you, but you can't really go wrong with anything Yeti makes and offers. Cannot speak on warranty and support, but I understand it is excellent, but so is most boutique premium bike brands nowadays (they all kind of need in modern times)

 @NuckaMan: everyone I know on a yeti has had frame integrity issues one way or another. No better than any other brand.

 The fact that most people can't afford them

 I know a couple of (slightly older) guys that swear by the switch infinity system and chase as much “made in USA” as they can - Yeti frame, MRP/Cane Creek suspension, Enve cockpit and wheels, King hubs and headset, stuff like that. I think some of it is heritage.

The younger guys I know that have them do it to flex on us with Stumpys and Treks. I’ve ridden them, they’re nice for sure, but I didn’t get blown away by them either. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want an ARC though…

 @sjma: But Yeti makes its frames in Vietnam. Which kind begs the question: why are they so expensive?

 I bought a 2020 SB150 used. It needed some work that the previous owner wasn’t willing to do so I got it very inexpensive. Even though I wasn’t the original owner, Yeti CS got me just the replacement parts I needed and didn’t make me buy the whole rebuild kit. In fact, I bought a downtube shuttle guard and they just shipped the handful of parts with it at no extra cost. Then I broke my rear wheel, and Yeti CS warrantied it despite me not being the original owner. Then they sent me a Yeti flag and coffee-table book. Frankly amazing customer service, and for what I want out of a long-travel bike it’s been a phenomenal bike.

 @Hayek: Good to hear they have good CS. Unrelated, Yeti Coolers also has great customer service. I called them about my lid having issues and they just asked for an address and shipped me a new one.

 @spaceofades @NuckaMan I've had two, my friends have had two each, and we've hard-cased every black trail jump at Whistler with zero "frame integrity issues". Maybe no better than any other brand, but no worse with regard to frame integrity. Yes, they ride very well. Whatever voodoo trickery their engineers conjure, they pretty consistently arrive at a unique and fun-to-ride bike. I didn't buy either of mine brand new, either someone else's warranty replacement or very lightly used.

 @jibbandpedal I bought the SB130 when it came out in 2018 and PB named it bike of the year, I think. I bought it because of the geo numbers and it's rating by PB. I got a base build kit for about $4500 at the time. I'm a mediocre trail rider and it suits me fine, 190lbs, 6'1" on a size large. No frame integrity issues. I like it a lot because its the first bike that's actually fit me well, coming from riding lots of SC and Trek. Here we are nearly 5 years later and I'm still on it because bikes are too expensive and it still works great. I've had it in for pivot bearings and switch infinity service once and I keep up on the suspension maintenance. It's a relevant bike still and I've just replaced some parts here and there and keep rollin. Just put fresh tires on it for the season and looking forward for the snow to melt. Would I buy Yeti again? Maybe. It seems more expensive to maintain the bearings and SI. The next bike I buy will really have to sing for me like this one did for ... reasons. Lately I'm really digging Propain and Mondraker. That's where I'd probably go instead of Yeti , mainly for something different. Cheers.

 I am six years in on my SB5.5. Zero problems and zero interest in replacing it. It has survived multiple plane trips and a forward somersault (I didn't fare as well). No cracks. OK, I did get it for a great price and would never have list price but it is a terrific bike. And I don't care that it can't hold a water bottle within the frame.

 @sjma: I too have heard from Yeti owners that the switch infinity system is pretty legit. Pedals like a beast and plows through the descents. My one friend bought one and says its hands down the best bike he's ever ridden. 2 more of my friends followed and they say the same. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 My best riding bud has an SB150 I've spent some time on, its a fucking great bike! Maybe its just the 29 vs 27 wheels, but on fast, gnarly jump lines with lots of pumping and big berms, that thing eats my commencal for breakfast. I would never pay money for one, but its a great riding bike. He did crack the frame nose casing a big double, and they replaced it very quickly as well.

 Come’on now, we all know they’ll just be pedaled around the pump track. Helps with resale value when they realize they cant do dirt jump sets

 The only gaps dentist's see are the one between their patients teeth and the ones on trails that they so desperately want filled in. The only air miles this bike will see will be a plane ride to some warm destination once a year to be pedaled around the pump track for a few minutes.

I absolutely love mine, but it's way better as a BMX/Pumptrack bike than a Dedicated DJ bike..

 I had the same thought. This level of finish and refinement on the bike isn’t just a one-off. The moulds alone to make a carbon fiber bike are like $50k from what i know. That’s not even considered all the engineering expense that goes into it plus manufacturing of any non “off-the-shelf” parts and fittings that yeti are so fond of.

 How do you know someone didn't? Maybe it's just not a great choice for economic or engineering reasons. Steel is especially popular for DJ frames, as is low cost. The material needs of those bikes is not like your average trail bike.

 I should probably mention, aside from Cowan, antidote made a hardtail 4x carbon frame, but i think it was just a test rig. As far as i know there havent been any commercially successful ones.

 Most likely just decals for the photo shoot. Look on Reed's actual bike, EX471's which are perfect for DJ wheels.

 @stormracing: Considering my buddy just broke both his Absolut and his Commencal DH bike in the span of a week I am gonna have to skeptical on that. Good value but breaking 2 frames is not exactly reassuring.
