Sam will be rocking this custom pink Specialized Demo at this weekend's World Cup in Fort William to bring awareness to breast cancer. After the race is over all of his clothing will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the fight against cancer. It's great to see one of the fastest riders in the world stepping up to the plate again this year for a good cause. Listen to Sam explain his pink bike to Pinkbike readers below!

Is this the fastest pink Demo in the world? It's more likely simply the fastest Demo, period! The team bikes, including Sam's special edition Demo, flew from the US to Fort William, arriving a day ago. Hill's mechanic, Jacy Shumilak, starts the unboxing and building process above, but you can listen to him talk about the cause below.

It all starts here. Jacy keeps the wheels turning for the Monster Energy - Specialized team.

Jacy is known for being meticulous in his bike setup, which is probably a good thing when this is the name on the bike that he is working on.

Hmmmm, what's so special about this Black Box rear derailleur from SRAM? Is this a prototype of the rumored XO DH derailleur that we've been hearing about? Word is that although it looks quite similar to a standard XO unit, the mech's parallelogram and geometry have been altered to work better with the smaller cassettes that you'll find on the back of most downhill bikes. This is said to allow the derailleur to follow the cassette closer, which should make for quicker and more reliable shifting. Stay tuned...
photo
Sam's RockShox BoXXer get the pink treatment as well, although I'm sure that there is also some very interesting things going on inside this special Black Box fork.

Check out the Monster Energy - Specialized website to keep up with the Sam, Brendan and Troy.

Sam won't be hard to spot at Fort Bill in all of that pink gear - hold'er wide open, Sam!

They're Sram black box, so no one outside of an elite circle of SRAM employees and riders knows. And in fairness, it looks red in the above photos.

 Breast cancer awareness?

Anyone who knows what a pink bike would symbolize already knows about breast cancer, and anyone who doesn't know what breast cancer is won't be able to put the two concepts together.

Besides, how is riding a pink-colored bike supposed to do anything positive for breast cancer victims? Does it forward breast cancer research?

If he wanted to help, he'd be donating some money, or getting his sponsors to do so. If the whole extent of his "actions" to promote breast cancer awareness is painting his bike pink, then he's not really doing fuсking much, is he? Is that too cynical?
  • 41 0
His kit will be auctioned off after the race and the proceeds will be donated to charity.. I think it was over $5000 for the last years pink gear at the Fort Bill WC.

jokermachine's comment may have been out of place and uncalled for, but i think alot of pinkbiker users need to pull there heads out of there ass when replying. is there really need to call him a c*nt, tell him to drink more vodka...etc.... really guys, give your f*cking head a shake. switching back to topic, good on sam for continuing to help out breast cancer, every little dollar counts, even if it's not quite my style, more of a purple guy then pink Wink .

nyterider i agree with u to an extent though I said what i did based on his minimizing what sam is doing that offends me but calling him names or insulting him for no reason is pointless
  • 1 0
@shijunkamisai, my comment was never directed at you, its for kids that sit behind a computer screen and act like a complete dumb-ass. i myself have had family go through breast cancer, and luckily they beat it. i realize where your coming from, and his comment offended me as well.
  • 1 0
nyterider - jokermachine is a moron. The article clearly stated how Sam and presumably Specialized was going to do something special. Jokermachine chose to ignore that and draw attention away from a worthy cause and say something stupid for reasons he can only know - perhaps he wanted to show how extra special he is by being a cynical idiotic bastard? I have no problem insulting someone who deserves it
  • 1 0
you mean like half of people on this website that never read the article and make stupid/uncalled for/ill-advised comments.... well i better get to work, have a long list of people i need to insult on here then....

Uhhh I wasn't aware that there was a war going on.

Your analogy is stupid as fuсk. The only time a "your mom" joke would be offensive to someone whose mom died would be if the joke was "yo mama so dead, she's dead!"

People need to man up and stop getting butthurt over retarded shit.

Honestly, no, I wouldn't be pissed, because I don't expect everyone to know all the shit that I've been through in my life. If it offended me, I'd tell the person that that's what happened. Do you expect everyone to go through life afraid to say anything, because it might possibly offend someone?

You're so politically correct it's not even funny.

Its not about political correctness. Regardless of whether not you have personal experience with breast cancer, or someone you know has it, its a serious topic and shouldn't be taken lightly. • 3 0
wonder how much of an impact this will have on fashion downhillers who were raving about flat/nearly flat bars up untill now......
  • 1 0
Really depends on the bike, my session 10 is like a tower so I need pretty low bars on the dirt jump bike and am bike it's all about the rise.
  • 2 0
yea, thats logic, but im talking about the people who will run whatever is the most fashionable height no matter what set up they have otherwise.
  • 1 0
I see your point, I know a few people like that.
  • 1 0
Oh yeah no doubt, its kinda funny tho, because you see sam and a lot of the other top guys use 1" rise bar, but than the "trend" to regular dh riders is to "look" as low as possible(fashion) so where did such a trend start Wink I'll tell you, short guys like me feel better on bikes that are much lower in the front end(and everywhere else) but not only does it feel good, it looks alot better. so than you got all these tall guys doing the same thing but their riding stance looks a little odd, www.pinkbike.com/photo/6539253 Really, the WC are just doing what is comfortable.
  • 2 0
He did win the world champs there, i think he knows what its like...
  • 1 0
I believe Sam is running the 38mm rise Renthals, I don't know if it started with short guys feeling high rise bars were too big more likely someone just thought i wonder if lower rise bars would be better. Any way it won't make a hugely visible difference to stance being less than 2" difference in height or 1" in some cases, the wrong size of frame would be far worse.
  • 1 0
To add to that, different geometries will also decide what's good for each rider and heat tube length.
  • 2 0
To make it obvious, please enclose sarcasm in the appropriate sarcasm tags "[sarcasm]" and "[/sarcasm]"

Umm, you guys need to adjust your monitors - that's definitely PINK! As pink as....well you know.
  • 2 0
Where's my Ray Bans lol, great cause though, so good on Sam for stepping it up again he this this at FT Wil a few years back not sure if the same reasons, wore the bolt pink/yellow combo then and won I think by mem?

I'll have one Demo med in just black pse, I think this is the bike of 2011 so good on Specialised/Sam, usually not a big fan of them but this frame just works for me in any colour!

And about time Sram on the DH specific Rd been asking for this for some years, I switched to 11 Saint this year for the reasons above, closer ratio, and more tucked in behind the CS so maybe next year I'll look at Sram again on the DH bike, though the Saint is/has been awesome, never thought I'd say it about Shimano again but I eat my words, XO still on the trail bike though haha...

Renthal locks ons too awesome, as for the bar stack height, Demo's have a short HT, zero stack HS is run and also the Demo has one of the longest reach measurements per size so I can see why he's running that setup, its still low total GEO is important not just what looks the same as everyone else, do the numbers before comparing, amazes me how judgmental people still are based on looks, mtb attitudes progressing doh.
  • 1 0
why not just use the Sram Rival road derailleur, its already setup for small, close ratio cassettes, its got a shorter cage and tighter spring, then the X.0, its lighter and a fraction of the price. Just pair it with an x9,x0, or XX 10spd shifter and your set.
