Inside you can get the first look at Gravity's new carbon and aluminum hybrid flat bar that measures out at a full 29" wide, as well as their updated lower rise Direct Connect stem.

The Gravity Light OS flat bar is completely new for 2012 and uses a combination of carbon and aluminum to create a wide bar with some unique traits. Gravity says that the new bar will be right at home on the front of downhill bikes.

The new Gravity Light OS flat bar is not only wide, measuring out at a full 740mm wide (that's 29"), but is also made using an interesting combination of double butted 6066 aluminum and unidirectional carbon. The obvious question is, why combine these two materials? If you were to cut the bar in half you'd discover that the aluminum internal layer is thinner than you'd find on a standard full aluminum bar, and is reinforced with the carbon outer layer. Unlike a lot of carbon/aluminum hybrid parts, the outer carbon layer is not a simple wrap around the metal component. Instead, the two parts are thermally bonded together and the carbon plays a structural role in the bars performance. Gravity calls this Carbon System Integration (CSI).

Gravity Light OS handlebar details:

• Flat bar
• Carbon/alloy construction
• 9° sweep, 4° upsweep
• 740mm width
• Weight: 240 grams
• MSRP $130 USD (approx)

The unidirectional carbon hides a double butted aluminum internal layer.

It is obviously more labor intensive to build the new bar out of two different materials, but according to Gravity it does offer benefits over both aluminum and carbon bars. The hybrid bar is said to offer a slightly different ride characteristic, halfway between a full carbon and standard aluminum bar when it comes to stiffness. But the real benefit may by the aluminum core's added resiliency against damage, from both impacts and clamping forces from an over-tightened stem or lock-on grips.

The Gravity Light Direct Connect stem gets updated for 2012 with less rise and a sharp looking finish. It also forgoes the multiple mounting positions, instead using a single 45mm reach.

Gravity Light Direct Connect stem details:

- 45mm reach
- 8.5mm stack height
- BoXXer mounting pattern
- Weight: 118 grams

There was a colorful display of Gravity Light Moto X cranks on display as well.

Check out the Gravity website for more information.

What do you make of Gravity's hybrid aluminum/carbon flat bar? Do you see the benefits of combining the two materials in a handlebar?

 wow im impressed!

Should be a nice bar for trail bikes with tall headtubes. Finally, gravity is making a respectable looking DM stem. They should totally consider making a colored version of the GLight cranks.

i have a set of gravity carbon riser bars on my orange alpine and they are ultimate porn but these? these are the DVDA of bike porn!

i must say that carbon + aluminum handle bars are nothing new. i've had one since 2005 on my XC bike but thermally bonding them together is a different story. if this is way stronger and stiffer than just a plain aluminum handle bar or a typical wrap around carbon over aluminum handlebar, they better have this process patented or else, someone else might get the idea.

should have made the bars 32" Big Grin

 Very nice..

God I wish Marzocchi would just change their 2 bolt DM mount to the 4 bolt Boxxer/40 style, so frustrating only being able to use like 2 different stems Blank Stare

Hope 888 crown will be the solution !

888 DM stems are supposed to go with the Boxxer standard next year. Finally! (facepalm)

hahahahaha just drill a hole in the crown! hahah kidding ok, no need no neg prop me to death

Come on man - Theres more than 2 options with the current 888's Razz The Sunline stems are badass.

just don't ride 888s they suck

Really? And what gives you that idea?

 Not true talhaslam.

can anyone tell me what were the only forks to fail at the rampage ????? yeppp you guessed it the 888 (and by fail i mean they snapped in half) ... i mean that is the MOST extreme riding a fork will EVER see but ... that doesnt look good as a company when you have more than one fork fail at an event and the other companies didnt have any ...
  • 4 0
Good thing no one on pinkbike does 60 feet transfers or 70 foot drops then isn't it? Those forks broke in the same circumstance any other fork would break. Twisting of the lowers relative to the stanchions, 40s would snap, dorados would snap, boxxers too.
  • 1 0
yeah dude, alot of forks being run at rampage were marzocchi's, except for zink, who did the 360 with boxxers. IMO 888's feel smoother/buttery and more active when riding, and turn out to be somewhat light. so don't be hating on marzocchi's until you've tried multiple forks. f*cking hater's keep hating but your all missin out.
  • 1 0
yo boss i have tried multiple forks ... and i aint hatin i am just stating my opinion ... i am just saying that there were boxxers and 40's at the rampage and you didnt see them snapping ... the 888 are buttery smooth ill give you that ... and we can all have our preferences and opinions so lets just leave it at that

I've never ever ridden a 40 or a boxxer, new or old, which feels as good as my 2006 888rc. I think theres just too much going on with other forks - The older 888rc's are just straight up basic and reliable. More oil = More progression, Internal preload for sag/low speed forces, compression dampening for the majority of stroke and the same applies for rebound. Too many companies are making an awesome platform and then letting the end user f*ck it up with countless adjustments - The best performing systems are the most basic imo.

i wonder what the people who are in this company are saying... "hey _______ because raceface is shutting down lets show our shit and maybe more people will buy!"

Ima run these flats on my DJ bike for a while. Seems like FSA is going to make some more dinero of off Raceface's death.

cranks are slighty the same as RF respond
  • 19 1
Which doesnt matter much since RF went belly up, even if they resembled the Respond. There are only so many shapes a crankarm can be, most of them resemble one crank or another
  • 6 1
well, lucky for FSA then that RF are no longer their competition...
edit: simcik beat me to it.
  • 1 0
well u can copy the design of the RF cranks but never their quality Frown

Congrats! You Made my Glare but with Carbon! How fast is the copy of thechnologies

Do you actually think you were the first person to wrap one material with another? This bar has about as much in common with a burrito as it does your frame.

flag norland-dynamics (Mar 16, 2011 at 19:13) (Below Threshold)
what I did with my frame wasn't to wrap one material in another at all. All a molding process was involved, hours of engineering consulting research and development, something you won't see at your High school, hours of composite material professional artesans making a precision job, hours of designing the perfect surfaces for the material integration. So, don't offend my job kid by saying is wrapped material in another, if someday you take the decision to study mechanical engineering, you will come bit closer to understand all this Cheers!

 Then what did they copy?
  • 1 2
wow, just as rf closes they open up new cranks that totaly copy rf colours,
