Bike Check: Anne Terpstra's Ghost Lector - Albstadt World Cup XC

You might not be into ultra-light hardtails, but there's no denying that Anne Terpstra's Ghost Lector World Cup UC looks pretty damn sharp in its bright orange paint. The color is actually the same as what you'll find on one of Ghost's lower-end Lectors, but the World Cup frame is manufactured with their 'Ultralightweight Carbon,' hence the UC designation.

Terpstra is from the Netherlands, where she took the National Championship titles in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and she was also a junior World Cup winner back in 2009 before coming in third at the European Championships in Zoetermeer.

With a stem and handlebar from Tune, along with a set of foam grips and Level ULT brakes, cockpits don't get much lighter than this.


Her factory team-spec Lector World Cup UC follows the same recipe as many other bikes at this level - light, simple, and efficient - but Terpstra's setup also includes a few interesting additions. One of these is the flat repair and toolkit that's stored inside the spindle of her SRAM cranks, cranks that are also home to a Quarq power meter and a 32-tooth X-Sync chain ring.

Another hidden goodie is the Pepi's Tire Noodles inside her Schwalbe tires. These are special cross-country-specific foam inserts designed for low-volume racing rubber, but they essentially do the same thing as any other insert by dividing the tire's inner volume in half; sealant and air up against the casing, and the foam up against the rim. Her bike's Tune carbon rims are shod with 2.25'' Racing Ralph tires as of right now, but a pair of Rocket Rons were awaiting a few test laps on the muddy Albstadt cross-country course.

It's not always about as few grams as possible. Terpstra is running a Quarq power meter with her SRAM cranks, as well as a 100mm-travel Reverb dropper post that makes sense for this tricky course.

Then again, when you're running Tune's ultra-light cross-country wheelset, complete with ceramic bearings, you do have some wiggle room when it comes to weight.

 @smartfartbart: He was just saying that that particular person did not know, its not to say the rider or their personal mechanic doesn't know. Also, this could be the sort of thing that they are keeping close to their chests. It seems silly but when you are looking for every competitive advantage, information asymmetry costs you only the discipline it takes to just not say anything.

 How much do the inserts weigh? Why not simply run a thicker casing tire if that is a lighter option? I just started running the DHR 2 with the folding DH casing on the rear of my trail bike to avoid flats. (I would have run a DD casing but they don't make it in a WT for some reason) I actually like the way the thicker casing feels in rough sections of trail to be honest. It's much less harsh. 290 grams was the weight penalty for that vs the exo casing which I typically puncture 3 times a year.

 I can't imagine that the weight savings outweigh the loss in usability. I have the same (old) reverb remote on one of my bikes and I hate it just as much (maybe even more) than the lack of reliability...

And they missed the opportunity for dual gripshift with the new dropper remote + eagle gripshift. Love the tune wheels, classic Euro XC stuff.

 @honda50r: Rough math here - let's say 20# flat for a modern race HT, then 400g for a dropper, 200g for foam tire inserts, 100g for power meter, 100g for a damn tool in the crankset, 100g older xx1 11speed crankset vs RF SL g4 or the like (get the TUNE!), 200g for Sid over a Fox 32 SC, ~100g for remote lockout and housing etc. That's 3# right there without too much creativity, and I'm not sure that Ghost frame is in the range of the Scott or Specialized HT's at sub 900g, probably closer to Santa Cruz or Norco at 1200g+.

Or, somebody could weigh it. Bet it's closer to 25# than 20# as pictured....
