Bike Check: Richie Rude's All-New SB150 29er

Aug 26, 2018 at 21:01
by Mike Levy

Anyone in the top half of an Enduro World Series field is a wizard on a bike, but the guys who consistently fill out the top-ten on the results sheet are absolute monsters in every way possible. And while he's had a rollercoaster of a season, Yeti's Richie Rude is still the final boss in my books; rocks cringe when he approaches, and you're not sure why the ground is shaking until the two-time EWS champ steams into view.

Did you see the video of him hitting that tree during the Whistler round? It was a collision that would have removed the shoulder from my body via blunt force trauma, but Richie barely stopped rolling and jumped right back onto his steed. I think the tree actually apologized to him, too.
Richie's SB150 Details

• Intended use: enduro racing
• Wheel size: 29"
• Rear wheel travel: 150mm
• 64.5° head angle
• 433mm chainstays
• Boost 148 rear spacing
• Size: medium
• Handlebar width: 750mm
• CushCore tire inserts
• Aluminum DT Swiss wheels

Unlike the also-new SB100, the SB150's Switch Infinity unit sits in parallel with the frame, just like the SB6. The shock being driven by a small linkage rather than the swingarm itself is a big reason for the water bottle real estate.

Yeti's twenty-three-year-old enduro monster has an all-new bike to race on this season, a bike that takes over the SB6's slot as the burliest, slackest rig in Yeti's catalog. The SB150 is a 29'' wheeled, 150mm-travel (duh) all-mountain and enduro sled with a 64.5-degree head angle and, get this, room for a bottle inside the front triangle. Cue angels singing and me finally not moaning for once.

There are other details, too, like how the shock is driven by a link rather than straight off the swingarm, some tweaks to the suspension rate, and a 44mm offset fork with 170mm of stroke. Reach is nice and roomy as well, with a 460mm number for the medium, and 480mm for the large size that Richie prefers.

Richie is on the older Shimano kit rather than the still-rare 9100 group. He often runs CushCore inserts in both of his wheels, but sometimes takes it out of the front if the course isn't too rough.

Where's the bike? All I can see are magic floating components

The frame is yeti blue under the cover, to be sure everybody notice it's new, they put the "proto cover" on it. Hey! Look at me! I'm a prototype! Look at me! LOOOOK

That’s exactly what I see when I close my eyes after smoking weed. Hmmm...

I thought to myself: that’s what this frame looks like to me. But huh that would be a atupid thing to write. It would sound like a dumb teenager who never smoked weed bragging to his buddies only to commit a social suicide. But then I thought... this would really piss off some people... and I smiled

Where's the bike? All I can see are massive calves...

Wow Richie legs looks like an old Oak tree vs Mike one´s looks like plywood fake tree...hahahaha. Richie has good shoulders to carry 50kg big concrete bags all day long. I ride one time a Yeti SB6 bike and the suspension has a unique feeling compared to any other bike I test.
  • + 8
richie looks like a velodrome pro, the poor bike!!
  • + 7
How would your physique compare to Ritchie's? I think a lot of us would feel a bit under-gunned standing next to RR.

@Trailstunter: this post feels somewhat inadequate next to yours.

Adrien Dailly looks pretty small and thin compared to Richie Rude... Proof you don't need to be built like a linebacker to be insanely fast.
  • + 23
Richie consistently dominated when he was riding a 440mm reach medium with a 60mm stem and small wheels. Just say'n.

 Bit like Graves, too.

And how can he even ride without a "1.4% stiffer straight downtube and knock block bullshit device"? Must ride like a wet noodle.

Where can I find the video of him hitting that tree?
This guy rides like its worst enemy is the bike and the trail.
Being a sponsor of this guy must be a tough job. No one is better at durability test and pushing for improvement, if something last a stage with Richie, could last forever with me. Thanks for that Rude.

 Canadian tree apologized to Richie
  • + 2
@mtbikeaddict: that would put me out for a month...
  • + 1
@samjobson: Oh at least. I shudder to think what that would've done to me... but I'm built more like a taller Levy, and less like that linebacker to his right. Big Grin I think the tree wobbled...

$8,000 bike and all we see is Richie doing skids in the dirt at the condos.

 Is Ritchie riding a medium?
The specs state medium but you make a contradictory or confusing statement in saying that Ritchie prefers the size Large reach? Please confirm , thanks

How does Richie Rude not have the latest XTR? Hasn’t he already raced on it? Didn’t he help develop it?

If Shimano can’t get Richie Rude XTR then something is seriously screwed up. Either there is something wrong and the parts themselves aren’t ready for prime time or the rumors of production problems are very, very real.

Guessing it will be spring time before any consumers actually get theirs.
  • + 1
Or maybe he prefers other groupsets? Something a little burlier?
  • + 3
 @pbfan08: he's rude. he doesn't give a damn.
  • + 2
Richie I bed is going to be the last prorider to smash officially this new xtr cranks...
  • + 2
This is/was a text bike. He has an SB6 with the new XTR on it.
  • + 0
Maybe something to do with one up sponsorship?
  • + 1
My guess is that there aren't many copies of the 9100 groupset floating around, and being that it was developed first and foremost for XC, those folks will get it first. It could be about timing, as well. World Cup XC guys got it offered and all said "yea sure" and Shimano came to US riders and said "it'll be two weeks."

While Rude is a world class rider, EWS and American riders are still going to play second fiddle to guys like Schurter and Van Der Poel. I'd guess by Fall there will be enough copies around that any Shimano rider who wants one can have it.
  • + 0
I think he also has a deal to use one up cassette rings and they may not work with the new xtr.
  • + 1
@kipvr and @bulletbassman I was keen to agree with you guys then I got to looking at Richie's current rides...and he doesn't run OneUp rings or extenders on his older setups either. I think it's just a case where there aren't many copies of 9100 floating around, and even fewer available to non-XC non-WC racers.
  • + 3
I always wang on to anyone who pretends to listen that shorter offset works on long travel 29er forks. Now that Richie has confirmed this I will wang on some more...

Has there been a poll on water bottle use? I know it's currently in vogue on pinkbike comments but i only know one person thats interested in using one.
  • + 1
I use one every ride on my Reign SX.
  • + 3
The summary says he runs Stans Aluminum rims, but the photos and all of Rude's riding I have seen have been DT.

@mikekazimer & @oldfut AKA press fit (Wheels Manufacturing does have a threaded adapter)

 Nice specialized bottle cage ????
  • + 3
 yepp best bottle cage around...
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: serious question, is that a Spec Zee Cage? I need a decent bottle cage and haven't found one yet, security is priority not so worried about access. cheers
  • - 3
@johnnygrosso: i love it because it keeps the bottle very well secured. Lost a bottle only once but that was in a bike park. Many side loaded do work well but I just like this one most.
  • + 6
I have the same spec as Rude in the bottle cage department.
  • + 1
@johnnygrosso: They are brilliant, get one.
  • + 2
Why would he be running different front and rear rims?
Is the EX511 he has on the front not the stronger of the two so should be on the back.
  • + 5
471 is stronger, and the strongest of DT’s line up, but doesn’t have the width for front tire sidewall support for a lot of people
  • + 4
 EX 471 25mm internal width, EX511 30mm internal width.
  • + 1
Lots of people use wider tires up front then rear. Why not a wider rim as well to support it in a different way?

Be interested to see how the backcountry research strap / spare tube fits on this bike? Frame looks pretty tight with water bottle and shock.
  • + 1
So when is this being released? Anyone know the rules around racing prototypes or preproduction models and how they are distinguished?
  • + 2
I look forward to seeing it with a real paint job but I'm glad Yeti is finally making room for water bottles.
  • + 0
If you look around the bb and switch link you can see the turquoise underneath the disguise wrap thing.
  • + 3
bike looks great. shame about the wheelsize
  • + 1
Shame about your narrow-mindedness. He's a racer, a two-time EWS general ranking winner and knows witch wheel size is the best suited for him, depending on the event.
  • + 3
DT Swiss must be chuffed - “Aluminium Stans Rims” listed..... whoops
  • + 2
Can anyone post the link for Richie hitting that tree in Whistler? I have tried to find it and can't.
  • + 1
So Richie jumped up 40mm in reach from the sb5.5 and 60mm (!) from the sb6?! That’s a pretty huge jump, thought that he’d probably prefer the medium.
  • - 1
The whole point in this camouflage is that it breaks up the shape of the ww1 cargo vessel it’s on from a far distance so what’s the point on a bike, if they didn’t want us to see it properly it would be Matt black and they would get Richie to do skids everywhere and flick the bike around so you have no clue what’s going on, why would they put camouflage on it and then think “ hey we should let mike levy put our “secret” bike in front of nearly every mountain biker in the world on pink bike” what’s the point?
  • + 3
The point is that it's yelling in everyone's face that yeti has a new bike. It makes everyone turn his head, with the normal paintjob most people wouldn't realize.
  • - 1
Pretty sure it's to stop computer programs from being able to 'see' it and produce an replica frame. Which should stop other companies from taking pictures, feeding those pictures into a program and then seeing the geo and numbers on a product, how it performs and stuff. But I don't know why I know that, and might have made it up.
  • + 2
Pet peeve: it's cue, not queue. Queue is the thing that Brits do.
  • + 2
 Wow, that was corrected quickly!
  • - 2
Freaking awesome paint jobs coming out lately, is carbon easier to lay it down on?
  • - 1
 @ShempHoward: it's a wrap
  • + 2
I like some rap every now and on my frame.

Until I saw the blue around the bottom bracket.. poor wrap/stickers fail..

With all that muscle power I can imagine Richie racing BMX at the Olympics
  • + 1
He's running a DHF in the rear, was not mentioned in the vid. Anyone have experience with that setup?
  • + 1
DHF front / rear works well, especially in drier conditions. It's a little faster rolling than a DHR II, although the tradeoff is that you do lose a little braking traction.
  • + 1
Yup. I took my 2.35 DHF and that was in front for a season and put it on the back, with a new 2.5 DHF for the front. It is awesome. A friend I ride with has had DHFx2 for over a year.
