Joe Smith: Going Fast In Slow Motion

Sep 27, 2010 at 15:11
by Mike Levy
Kona has just uploaded a great video of their World Cup team rider Joe Smith tearing Whistler a new one on his 2011 Operator. The video includes some crazy slow motion footage of the bike working over the terrain, as well as Smith getting completely sideways on the senders.

Check out the video,
Kona's Joe Smith riding a lot faster than you... even in slow mo!

Wow, some of those whips - every part of the bike in a straight line at exact 90 degree to the trail floating sideways, so cool!

" ppl are probably gonna hate cuz hes riding a kona but this is sick"

so you have to be on some fancy ass bike to not get bashed now? LOL. Funny because a lot of the top bikes on the mkt right now are single pivot based. (not that has anything to do with his kona tho, just pointing out the hyprocracy of pb)

 Got Sick ?

However, I am faster than him when he is in SlowMo, but not by much.
Good luck next season Joe
  • 2 1
Who filmed this? And what was it shot on?
  • 4 3
Epic, thats all. One word describes it end of story. (lol, more than one word Razz )

cool vid. loved the slow-mo and the soundtrack.

scottsecco I saw them filming this in whistler. They had crazy amounts of equipment set up. They were shooting with two cameras at all times, had a computer hooked up doing I dont know what and a few other pieces of equipment. Filmed for two days to get all that.
  • 1 0
Wow, I was standing beside heckler's rock when they were filming that area and had no idea the vid would look that awesome. So damn cool.
  • 2 1

Incredible filming and the slow mo is mind blowing. This video is one of the best I've seen, no doubt about that, but with all the slow motion being used now do any of you out there think that it is too much? I remember when helmet cams took off not too long ago and now that footage is everywhere... Can we never have too much slow motion?
  • 4 0
I think that video it is well done, a good mix between slow mo and him pinning it.
  • 5 0
When done right, Slow mo can be brilliant, but when done poorly it blows. This is brilliant!
  • 3 0
The slow mo also allows us to REALLY see whats happening, pretty awesome, especially when someone is moving at that speed!
  • 2 2
^^ agreed but it is possible to get to much because it gives your eyes time to waver and you start thinking

hmmm that tree sure does looks nice

but thats only if they do too much

this is the perfect balance
  • 1 0
i would have take some extra slomo foutage...you know like the "water ballon in the face experiment" where you can see the tire rebond, the wheels/frame torsion etc

really good vid!
  • 5 0
I think it worked incredibly well to showcase the bike, which was the goal of this video. It may be excessive for the middle of a full length film, but it was very well suited to this application.
  • 2 0
I really dont think I could get tired of this kind of slow motion. There's slow motion and then there's beatiful slow motion, this being the later. I'd guess they were using something like 1000fps, probably a phantom hd
  • 3 0
slOmO os good as long as it is... good. Apart from Life Cycles mindscrewing insanity this is probably the best one out there. Sometimes it gets too cheesy though, and comes out grandiloquent like president speeches in catastrophical movies.

Fortunately there are Parkin Bros on DirtTV with their porn-like action only, total rippage with ridiculous punk music curing us as soon as we want to start writing poems about passion and freedom Smile
  • 9 1
if i were gonaa blow 7000 a dh bike it wouldnt be a kona
  • 3 0
 love this vid.

overcranked shots look great Smile music edit was great, sexy VO great. sick rider and bike. watching the bike travel thru the suspension in slo-mo great.

5 stars!
  • 4 0
That is probably the best video I've seen in a long while. I'm lovin' all the slo-mo and bike compressing ALL the way at 2:50 is SO SICK!!!! Definitely VOD!
  • 3 0
Everytime I see a Whistler Video it makes me want to kill myself and hope that I come back reincarnated as a Canadian so Whistler can be close to me. That was prolly hands down the best video of Whist I have seen yet.
  • 5 2
was just there yesterday, 9th time up this season...yes it is that awesome.haha i just had to rub it in... But i got 5 flats and my buddy didnt get one! WTF....hmmmm i was riding a kona though.....
  • 4 0
I gotta admit, I really do enjoy watching people bottom out the big bikes in slow motion.
  • 2 0
lovely, awesome stuff makes me wish i was as fast to be sponsored so i could rip and ride all day everyday, gave me goosebumps
great ad for Kona and decent looking ride, but i'll still be Intense for life Smile
  • 1 0
Anyone else notice that in the final shot his Boxxers have like a 2 stage compression, it goes through about 170mm, stops then bottoms out. It looks so awesome seeing a fork working like that. Amazing video, Kona's are finally reclaiming their brand name to what it once was!
  • 1 0
Its a sexy bike, but I find the Demo 8 too cheap in price compare to all other high end bikes. So if Im gonna buy a new high end bike I would go for a Demo 8, its world class and its cheap.
  • 7 7
Very cool rider and all that, but slo-mo is nothing new, and I don't know why people always trip balls over something that has been around for ages (myth Busters? High speed cameras that can catch bullets in flight?), just this time, it's been applied to DH biking.... ok neat, but it's nothing to go ape-shit crazy over...

Sorry, I know I will get neg. props and get flamed for this, but that's my view.

Still, cool vid, great rider, and I mean, I never said I could pull it off... just saying it's nothing new!
  • 5 3
i actually agree, although its good to see how the bikes react to terrain in detail, id rather watch full speed shredding any day!
  • 5 1
I gave you + props, just to be a nonconformist
  • 5 1
this edit was specifically filmed with the mind-set of showing the viewer the bike, how it looks, reacts to the rider and trail and to generally advertise the bike/ company. I don't disagree, slow-mo is definitely nothing new to holy-shit about. however, you do have to take the context and purpose of the footage into account when viewing vids like this Smile i'm sure if this were a general riding film there would be much more full speed shred-tasticness.
  • 1 1
well how many edits have you seen using a high speed camera and bike? i mean with your reasoning, we should all not be impressed by cable cams or heli shots... psht simpsons did it. nothing special.
  • 1 0
Actually we rarely get to see real high speed camera footage of bikes. Most footage is just slowed down and edited to make it work. If a hummingbird got caught in the seen it would most probably have clear wing strokes... hehe.
  • 4 2
Scott: I never said that it's not a good idea to do so, I was arguing the "holy shit" reaction by a lot of people. Very neat, but nothing to piss ourselves over lol

R-trailking-S: I would totally love to see any bird in that type of setting... would be amazing to have the rider coming off a lip, and have like a dove/pigeon fly right above him slow mo too... Now THAT would be something to holy shit over, at the chance coincidence Razz

Again, cool vid, but I am sticking to my "nothing to holy shit" over argument. (As Bedgebury put so awesomely!)
  • 1 0
eh well i wouldn't doubt if it was the first time for someone to see this so let em have their holy shit reactions... personally i did especially with the shifting shot and again, the last shot. its damned impressive and possibly ok for people to wet themselves over because this kind of production quality is rare... just look at how much "holy shit" reactions life cycles is getting.
  • 1 0
well slo-mo certainly isn't new, but I could watch downhill racing in slow motion all day - which is why I'm here and not watching TV
  • 4 0

 This... Is... AMAZING! :O

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE! Smile

What's the song throughout? I want to bike to it too. Although I could do without the women's voice. Whilst it fits in here, it wouldn't on a trail.
  • 1 0
Cool video but nothing incredible about it.... there are other video used the lo mo thingy too and I think it looks better. Just my personal opinion.... still a nicely done though.

This guy has absolutely phenomenal control of his bike. As you would expect from a world cup racer, really nice bike too. I like it alot!
  • 1 0
WOW, that was very well done. Best advertising I have seen in a while... and what amazing riding. Looks to me like Kona is more than just a beginner level bike.
  • 4 2
 the kona actually looks ok!
  • 7 3
i fail to see why people think konas are so bad anyway?!
  • 2 7
flag GoAnDRiDe (Sep 27, 2010 at 19:06) (Below Threshold)
because they are,and dont quote me on this "only entry level bikes",or that seems to be the complaint i see most of the time, deffinatly a mind changer this operator though
  • 4 1
I don't think its that they're actually bad bikes. Although I'm sure some will disagree there I'm sure.
But for me its more that they haven't really updated their design since they started using rebadged Turner Burners. :$
Could argue the same about Specialized, but they have pushed the fsr design way more than Kona have with the 4 bar.
  • 2 0
i agree as far as design goes they havent exactly pushed the boundaries but surely the fact that theres so many out there bought by people says something?! again i do kinda agree with the entry level statement but that depends entirely on the spec of the bike itself, i mean to be fair, if they were that bad famous/skilled riders wouldnt accept a sponsorship with them?! there are however better bikes out there for the money, hence why i sold my stab supreme and have ordered a mondraker. :-)
  • 1 0
lol, not that i really care but whyd i get neg propped i didnt even diss the bike, considering i like it?

Slow motion was used in good taste. I loved it, makes me wanna rip.
  • 2 2
The slow motion got really annoying after a whie, it seemed like half was slow motion. Some of the shots were cool, but over all, I think they had a little too much.

you mean the floating brake setup that they need to use because their design gives too much brake jack? good to see it's gone.
