Magura has let some information leak on their
newest prototype brake, including some very interesting materials that it uses. Inside you can read the press release and have a look at what's on the horizon.
Read on,Our Goal: To create the best bicycle disc brake in the world. At Magura, we firmly believe that we make the best hydraulic disc brakes in the market, since it has been our core expertise for decades. But we also realized that to create another revolution in disc brakes we would need to change our way of thinking. We needed to study what riders are demanding. What do non-competitive athletes need? What do professional racers require? How do we create brakes that meet the needs of both average cyclists and hard-core racers? How do we overcome individual preferences?
Our Method: We studied, listened, tested and repeated. The MISSION PERFORMANCE goal would not have been a success without the feedback of the world’s most discriminating riders, both recreational and professional. We consulted riders at the world’s biggest and best mountain bike festivals. We ran The Magura Crash Contest to gain insight on defects, failures and crashes that consumers have had riding various products from the world’s disc brake manufacturers. We utilized social networking sites to garner feedback from our core global audience. And finally, we carried out spectacular endurance tests at the MISSION PERFORMANCE Test Lab to ascertain the shortcomings of current disc brake offerings.
Magura Performance Faktor: Through exhaustive testing and feedback we finally divided disc brake performance into four categories: Weight, Heat Stability, Performance and Ergonomics. Each was evaluated as individual Performance Faktors and allowed us to take into account the needs of all riders, from XC riders to Downhill racers. Since one brake may be very light weight, yet suffer from poor performance under extreme conditions, and another may have excellent power but be exceptionally heavy, the best brakes in the world cannot specialize in these aspects alone: they must excel in all factors.
Carbotecture® is a revolutionary new injection-molding compound which cannot be compared with either conventional fiber-reinforced plastics or laminated carbon sheets. It has a high concentration of carbon fibers embedded in its thermoplastic matrix which makes it half the weight of aluminum, yet considerably stronger, extremely resistant to impact and fracture, and gives it very high fatigue strength. Its tensile strength per density is twice as high as aluminum or magnesium and six times higher than that of steel or die-cast zinc. Carbotecture® is also much more homogeneous and predictable than aluminum, allowing for further lightening of key components. To utilize this revolutionary material, Magura created a new manufacturing process called Carboflow®. Magura’s proprietary new process allows the company to maintain its exacting standards and maximize process reliability, precision and manufacturing tolerances with the lightest possible material distribution. The Carboflow® process has the added benefit of allowing complete in-house processing at MAGURA Germany and allowing maximum process reliability, dimensional stability and precision manufacturing opening unprecedented options in terms of component design.
This is just the first glimpse of what is coming with a complete launch scheduled in Summer 2011. Stay tuned for more to come over the next four months, as we will of course be releasing more information during that time and you won't want to miss even a bit!www.magura.comSource: Magura All that tech talk does sound promising, but lets hear what you think.
That'd be why my HS33 lever snapped just sliding it up my bars the first time fitting eh? Yes I had fully removed the clamping bolt. And why when I emailed Magura they replied with:
'Sorry to hear you have a problem with you HS33.
As you can appreciate the HS33 is manufactured and sold in the
thousands, they are the best selling brake in the World.
The warranty department do not have any issues with the strengh
of the HS33 lever, all of the returns are 'crash damage' or
over tightened.'
ie. Our brakes are so good it cant possibly have been our fault.
They make good brakes aye, but I just cant trust a company who blindly believes they're so good that their products don't fail - Especially when they're so cocky about it.
Plus, magura isn't super easy to fix and get parts for like Avid is and they seem to be much more expensive for about the same quality.
You get spare parts for Maguras on every corner. If Avids fail (and they do a fair bit of that) you often have to wait weeks to get them fixed. For Maguras it's just a matter of hours.
And I think that the higher price outside of Europe has a lot to do with the low Dollar.
On a positive note, the Carbotecture material actually does sound interesting, and I am looking forward to seeing the real-life pros and cons of this material in long-term testing.

my girlfriend's bike had the Magura Julie (a budget brake) which felt very powerful with only 160mm rotors, and proved very reliable (Magura have 5 year 'leak proof' warranty)
however, NO ONE GIVES A SH*T about magura, unfortunately here in the UK its not even considered by riders...
its a shame because they make great products, but perhaps their image is too "euro" or they just didn't ever catch the rider's imagination? or there is no more room in the disc brake market against Avid, Shimano, Hope (Hayes is pretty dead in the UK too..)
the Magura rep. used to come into our shop, he was a nice guy and I always felt sad that we would never give him any business simply we never had a single customer ask about Magura brakes in years of trading
thankfull he now works for Shimano repping in the UK so gets lots of business

The master cylinder uses the Carbotecture technology, the caliper is made out of aluminum.
Compromise.... great
So far Magura had a pretty decent design (with occasional mistakes) but this is really great.
I'm so looking forward to riding these babies!
I guess they don't exist so far, since the carboflow technology (where they can control how the carbonfibers are positioned) is completely new. But I would think that the future is bright with those new possibilities.
if this brake is amazing and "the best" then ok but how can they say anything if they haven't had people like us to test them? and these are likely to be very expensive too, i can't see magura being on top.sorry
Popularity =/= Quality/Performance
Everyone has Avid and Shimano because they are big names with relatively affordable products, and Hope is hyped as the best, and to be fair, does make very high quality brakes.
Magura, on the other hand is more expensive than Avid and Shimano and doesn't seem to have the reputation that Hope does. They do make very high quality products, though, with great performance. An example being their Gustav M's. This brake has been around in various forms since 1999, and manages 7.9m/s^2 deceleration with a 100N lever pull and a 190mm rotor. New Saints are 7.5 m/s^2 with 100N lever pull and 180mm rotor.

Looks sweet though ..
To create the best mountain bike brake - how clever is that?! Oh what's that brake you have there? - Magura Mission SL - oh, you like it? is it good? - yea they say it is the best brake in the world - how much closer to a jerk can you come with that?!
It's like Life Cycles film. You watch it, you are stoked to a level that Ryan can only dream about, excitement make you throw sounds comparable to a violent chilli based diarrhea, but then you think: was all of that really done for a movie about a bike?! so is that thing: how much more thinking can go to a development of a damn bicycle brake? sure it's great and brilliant but... Cotic and Earthed 1 yes...
If someone can't take a negative opinion about something he has no relation to, then has to make personal points, then turn on MTV and wank your life away. People with best brake in the world and no arse in the trousers FFS... Farttrick I can show you pollution, oh wait it won't be visible but it will knock you down sh*tless...
Long Live Hope's!!!
