Pinkbike Poll: How Many Days Did You Ride In 2015?

Dec 11, 2015 at 17:49
by Mike Levy
There are one hundred and four weekend days jammed into a year or just under two thousand, five hundred hours for most of us to do something other than work. That sounds like way more time than it actually feels like, doesn't it? I guess the old saying about time flying when you're having fun is especially true when talking about our precious Saturdays and Sundays. It's how you use those two days every week that matters. I know a lot of people who try to put in one hundred days on the bike every year, a number that, depending on how you've structured your life, may or may not be difficult to hit, and also one that sure matches up nicely with all those days away from work.

For a lot of people, however, life doesn't like to play ball when it comes to riding that much. Sure, some of you out there have no problem hitting two or even three hundred-plus days on the bike, but it's not a stretch to say that you bastards are in the very envied minority.

Or maybe you're more than happy to be getting out fifty, twenty, or even just a dozen times per year. It might come as a surprise to some of us, but there are probably many people out there who don't really want to ride much more than they did in 2015. Or maybe I'm wrong, and everybody always wants to ride even more than they're able to.

It's easy to ride everyday, I do 150km a week just commuting then its riding my MTB or Road bike before work (typically another 30km each day) and always riding road 50-100km on Sunday with my missus.

Have the odd day off, sometimes nice to be off the bike!
  • 50 0
About 150 days riding and probably 20 days digging
  • 21 0
Yep....not enough for the money i spent upgrading my bike...2016...
  • 29 0
161 days, thanks STRAVA...30 days building.
  • 38 3
@mikelevy , can we have a builders poll too ? Since no one would get much riding one with out us !
  • 25 0
I think "riding" would imply not commuting to work? Unless you have some pretty sick commuting to do! For me riding implies riding for fun not getting from a to b
  • 6 1
Not enough but we have one more week left, that means each of us can increase the number by 7.

  • 3 1
@hampsteadbandit, quit rubbing it in Rob! I missed a bunch of riding days this year digging trails for other people to ride. Do I feel smug or grumpy about it or both?

267! I still have time to crack 270!!!

Missing the answer that says only one due to injuries and surgeries
  • 1 0
I rode 39 days, last month of the year I am recovering from surgery but some of the places I rode I consider to epic!
  • 2 1
I have nearly 500 rides for the year if I include commuting, but I still enjoy every trip. Bad weather, good weather, whatever.... It's always fun to be on the bike especially because every commute means I'm getting fitter and stronger for those days I put the Mojo on the car when the mountains beckon.
  • 4 1
How's that possible? There's isn't 39 days in any month...
  • 5 3
 @Fix-the-Spade

I'm enjoying my trail building retirement...spent 20+ years digging bike parks, building skate parks and trails

nice to be riding now, and not digging anymore Wink

Not nearly as much as I would normally ride, especially compared to last year, but there were more important things that needed attention. Next year its on!

Last summer wasn't a good riding season for me either. Got a slap tear, a second child, bought a house and I turned allergic to beer. Those kind of things...

I have jumps on my way to work and another set I hit on the way home. They have small bush trails to connect them all. If that counted I'm over 200. My bike being broken has really killed me this year but my back up bike is way better this year so next year will be great.
  • 41 0

Benlousic - take it easy Big Grin Make sometginh out of it. I did not have more than 30 rides in the woods this year. But I learned to wheelie on manual on my way to work everyday. I have 4km one way which means I did more or less 200.000 km this year out of which I did at least 20km on back wheel Big Grin but removing your account is a good choice Big Grin However thefirst thing to do is to open Facebook and unfollow all of your friends who don't have kids.

I'm just gonna go by my strava stats Distance 4,142.8 mi Time 393h 33m Elev Gain 330,856 ft Rides 501 Roll on next year, 5000 miles easy !!!

  • 1 1
I know a pro roadie, he has 2 rest days in a week. When you ride every day and don't earn money doing it then your motivation must be coming from the purest love to biking.
  • 2 0
 [hours riding]/[hours in a year] = [393.5 hours]/[365.25 days * 24 hours/day] = 25.856 percent of the total time in 2015 you were biking
  • 2 0
@captaintyingknots that can't be true ... if you consider that 393
.5 hours are actually 16.4 days, which is no where near 25% of 365 days. But none the less it's A LOT of riding. (if I'm not mistaken it's 4.167%)
  • 1 0
 @trailynx You're right! it's actually 4.492% ... I dunno how I goofed that so hard
  • 14 0

  • 11 1
Strava really is good for this sort of thing. 140 rides this year so far.
  • 22 6
Who stravas every ride? You don't ever just go out and enjoy a ride sans strava
  • 37 3
Because if it's not on strava, it didn't happend.
  • 22 1
i've got plenty of strava rides with zero accomplishments. strava isn't ruining your rides; you are.
  • 5 1
@AllMountain Yeah, not sure why everyone hates on Strava.
  • 8 1
I Strava every ride. I control what I want to do, not Strava. I always like looking at my past rides and data though. Love it. I also like expanding my heatmap!
  • 3 0
I'm not tough enough to strava every ride. Its too deflating when you have the most rad ride ever and then you get home and see that you are 900th place because you sessioned the big drop 9 times.
  • 3 2
What if you don't have strava? Do you just not exist then?
  • 6 0
Strava isn't just about trying to KOM everything, I use it to log training, test setup, practice race paces styles, measured improvements in fitness or skill, and also see what and where my mates are riding and we encourage each other to go faster. All that, and of course rack up the KOMs Smile
  • 4 0
I Strava pretty much every ride. It's for me, no one else. I don't care about my ranking relative to others, or KOM. As I get older, fitness is an important part of why I ride. I like knowing how far, the calories, etc. I don't get to ride as much, so I like riding with a purpose -- am I climbing better? Riding through that rock garden more smoothly? Strava helps me measure that.
  • 2 0
Strava is like Facebook. All your friends called you a fag for being on it at first, a year later there they are along with your grandma and the rest of the world. It's a great tool. I like seeing my climbing improve, always knowing just how far a went and how much I actually climbed. Especially since every solo ride doesnt have to sound like a fishing story to your riding friends. Proof is there. Besides I never really remember its on mid ride. I KOM most of the time when I am just out having a good time feeling the flow.
  • 6 0
I rode on 15 of the 365 days. Totalling a max of 26 runs. Shit all. Being injured from October 2014 September '15 meant nothing. Bought a bike, had 2 weeks on it, crashed and broke myself again leaving me out until two weeks ago. Definitely hoping for a better 2016 in all ways of riding and injury.
  • 3 0
Still been a part of the scene plenty. good to see ya back on the bike at all bro
  • 1 0
Yeah but you've been working your date off with all those videos...
  • 1 0
I was doing that because I wasn't able to ride.
  • 7 1
I don't know, there's still a couple of days left.

I'd guess I rode about 125 days.

Rode CO, WY, UT, NM, AZ, WA, BC, WI, WV, MD, Whistler, Trestle, Snowshoe, Steamboat, Crested Butte, Angel Fire, Snowmass, Moab (3x), Sedona, Galbraith, Fromme, Ray's, lots of other sweet stuff.

No injuries too, it was a good year.

So real time dir about sixty days.

Me too..it's 16+16 km everyday..and often i'm lucky enough to have shortcuts on dirt..
Not like the rides of the weekends..but i still enjoy every mile..

Not enough and I've felt a bit under equipped to deal with the mental weather we have had in the UK this year but.... No more! Santa Claus has brought me a Fox downpour jacket!! Merry christmas everyone!
  • 3 0
Barely any, was kind of getting back into it, then winter came. When I was a teen, I'd bike almost every day as long as the weather was nice enough, but then my friend got brain damage, and everyone basically stopped bike jumping at that point.
  • 5 0
Not enough Frown due to injury , looking forward to "16 though, merry Christmas and happy new year lads
  • 3 0
Currently at 200 rides, but there will be a couple more rides or so by end 31st. More important, just shy of 3000 miles, and all my mileage is mountain bike! Happy Christmas all!
  • 2 0
More than 150 days is the average - good on you people! If I can get in 2-3 rides in a week during the better months I'm happy. When the kids grow up I hope to push this past 100. BTW, I'm assuming commuting doesn't count, haha. Merry Christmas!
  • 2 0
I stopped using strava halfway through the year so I guess I may have 70-100 rides. I also do other things (imagine that) like trail running and gym stuff. As long as I feel good and exercise a bit I know I won't get dropped on group rides! haha.
  • 2 0
Probably about 20 actual mtn bike rides. Working 50hrs a week, 2 kids to look after, dogs to walk and a hobby farm to rebuild and maintain takes time. I rode alot when i was younger (10k kilos in one year was my best) but these days i only climb on the bike to get in the woods and get some exercise. Maybe this year ill have more opportunity to get out and ride but its a balance as most find out later in life
  • 2 0
60 days riding, many many hours volunteering to our trail crew HAFTA.CA and at least 30 big days of trail work and maintenance! A good year all in all, club is now in full swing so more riding and a few road trips are in order for 2016....I hope! Merry Christmas PBers
  • 2 0
I have no clue, I why should I have, there are a lot of other thing rather that riding, if I' count all my activities O'll lose couple of days from year for pure calculating rather than enjoing life
  • 3 2
I walk the dog pretty much every day provided it's not really rainy --- LuLu doesn't like rain... she's a sissy if it's stormy.

Our walk consists of me riding a bike, her running along at my side. 20 to 30 minutes max.. we have a little loop we do, sometimes we'll go a different course, go a little longer..

Then for real rides, with some distance, that's as often as possible. 2+ hours, 3 times a week if I'm lucky.

I think it's a great way to stay fit --- for me as well as LuLu ---- the vet says she's in great shape but, I will say --- at some point in time, I might have to taper back. LuLu is a golden retriever an they tend to have hip problems. My hope, she's small for a golden, I hope that helps in the long run. My D O G before LuLu, Bailey lasted a good long time -- 14 years.

and to be dead honest --- for 50 years old... I'm still crushin' the trails and I honestly feel it's because I have been an avid biker pretty much my whole life. biking is a great form of exercise.

Rider owned.... for life (tag line from Transition Bikes). Something I follow strongly

RIDE ON!!!
  • 1 0
Get lulu some glucosamin supplements to help maintain her hip strength. I let my lab run wild and give her pure glucosamin powder. Hopefully when she's older her joints are all good!
  • 1 0
yeah --- I did that with Bailey --- the d o g before LuLu. I might start up on it myself as well ---- I ain't getting any younger. still huckin' big-bikes at 50

Not enough... Was on our for one of my best seasons ever... Until I had my worst crash ever. Finally getting back on my bike almost 6 months later. So good to be back! Next season going for 300.
  • 1 0
I cry every time I look out at the North Shore if I can't go riding that day. Although, I want to give thanks to Santa for a year of no crashes that didn't cause any injuries. Also a great year of very few tech problems with the bike... Better get that suspension rebuilt before I regret it! Playing hooky is the best form of riding your mountainbike during the weekdays! I recommend it everyone. It's seems so much more satisfying taking off during the day for a quickie on the Shore!
  • 1 0
With over 2700 miles logged so far this year there been a lot of smiling this year the only sad part is that only just over 300 was done on the dirt the rest is commuting keeping me healthy for the weekends at 56 all I have is hi hopes for the future that the present #'s will be flopped with the majority being on the dirt
  • 1 0
I ride all the time and every time I wear my Suunto Ambit to monitor my progress so I could go back and count but I don't wanna do that. I'm too lazy.

All I know is this is the year I didn't ride as much as I normally do due to a major accident. Left me off the bike for 5months and 2 shoulder surgeries. It's getting better but not 100%

I'm back on the bike though so I'm blessed for that. I hope next year I'll get to ride all year long!!

I've done 170 days of riding according to my Trailforks ridelog. Trailforks lets you know how many days along with number of rides, Strava only shows number of rides, so the total is inflated by days with multiple tracks (shuttling) and they don't separate out road bike or commute rides, so my Strava total is much higher.

Additionally you can log your rides with the Trailforks ridelog feature without gps, if you just want to log the day or you forgot your phone/gps device.
  • 4 0
I know you're a Mod plugging Trailforks but is it really designed to be compared to Strava? The GPS/ride features kinda seemed like an afterthought to me
  • 2 1
not really, but it certainty does not have the same feature set as Strava as far as fitness tracking, thats why I use both and sync my rides to TF from Strava. Trailforks has different features and is actually more geared to tracking how many days a year you ride than Stava, for which this poll was a question. I actually created the ridelog feature before Trailforks even existed as a Facebook app for just tracking the days one rode.
  • 1 0
I agree the ridelog feature sucks.
  • 1 0
Didn't count but 30-40 I would guess. Wife, kids, and a full time job make it tough to get out enough, but I enjoy the rides more than when I rode every couple days. Not counting commuting to work here and there, also had a knee injury....
  • 1 0
But if a slow year ride-wise do to work commitments and injury, so probably only managed just over 100 days.
Working 4 on/4 off has its advantages and most rides were weekdays so there weren't any crowds/queues.
Next year should be better and hoping to add at least 50% to this year's total.
  • 1 0
I didn't get to ride my bike as much as I would've liked to since I cracked my AM bike mid summer and only got it fixed in September... But I did get to travel and ride it a lot of places.

April to June was spent riding Kicking Horse and the surrounding trails. In July I went to Panorama, Silver Star and the bike ranch (Kamloops) for a day at each place then spent a week in Whistler. After that I took the month of August off and rode Fernie, Silver Star and Sun Peaks for 3-2-2 days. The rest of August was spent riding Whistler with a day in Squamish and a day at Coast Gravity....

Then back East I stopped by Highland for a day... Since then I got my AM bike fixed and have been riding trails in Quebec a bit.. Most recently I rode Bromont on Christmas Eve. Crazy weather this year!!

In short this year was awesome, and hopefully 2016 is even better! Moving back to BC in the summer!

:-) Happy holidays!

173 rides for me so far, if my house hadnt of needed so much done to it i wouldve managed more. I can manage out more than most people because im finished by 4pm most days and i can ride to my local trails in 15 minutes. I have to get up early for work, but im apart from that i really cannot complain.
  • 1 0
not nearly enough, broke my ribs ski training in early july and didn't fully recover until the end of august. terrible riding season for me, super stoked for next season though its gonna be sick
  • 1 0
I had to answer 10, as i spent more time on my trials bike than the DH bike in the first part of the year. Then house renovations killed the rest of the year, but now the house is sorted i can ride more next year. :-)

Bone spurs in your hips and the subsequent surgeries have a way of keeping you off your bike. Jonesing real hard to get back at it though!
  • 3 0
I was on my indoor trainer a few days after both my hip scopes, long before I was off crutches. Heal up, you'll be glad in the long run that you took the time to get your hips fixed.
  • 1 0
@SBPwhat Had my left hip done September 1 and the right hip done 3 1/2 weeks ago. I've been riding the trainer with no resistance every other day. How long after your surgeries did you feel like yourself again? Thanks for the kind words and any insight.
  • 1 0
I had 120 rides in 2015, averaged a little over 4 hrs ride time per week. I feel fortunate to be able to ride that much, considering I'm married with a 1 year old son, and work a full time job. I hope 2016 is even sweeter!
  • 4 0
This poll is broken on mobile.
  • 1 0
230 rides in counting for 2015. All dirt, all mtb. Not bad for puting 40hr/work week and two small kids that i watch one full day/week. Night rides are key to keep the frequency up all year of at least 4-5 rides/week.
  • 2 0
I rode a lot, pretty much every day until the weather crapped out and I went building. Also broke my leg in October and haven't ridden since.
