Prototype Morpheus DH Bike - Crankworx Whistler 2015

Morpheus Conspiracy DH bike

It's a Conspiracy

Morpheus is at Crankworx with a brand new, 27.5'' wheeled downhill bike, dubbed the Conspiracy, that features 200mm of rear wheel travel and full carbon fiber construction. It also replaces the older prototype they had been working on for the last few years, a bike that even Morpheus now admits was never able to meet their own expectations, and let's not forget how its polarizing look had earned it the unflattering nickname of the 'Boomerang.' Something tells me this new bike won't have many complaining about its appearance, though.
Morpheus Conspiracy Details

• Intended use: downhill
• Rear wheel travel: 200mm
• Full carbon fiber frame
• Tapered head tube
• Internal cable routing
• PF92 bottom bracket
• Compatible with all rear shocks
• Frame weight: 6.8lb (w/ FOX DHX2 Air)
• MSRP: $5,395 USD as pictured

The final version of that now defunct Boomerang prototype frame had to weigh 10lb in order to keep it in one piece, Morpheus revealed, which really defeats the purpose of using carbon fiber in the first place. It's a whole other story with the Conspiracy, though, with the frame weighing a very impressive (and claimed) 6.8lb with a FOX DHX2 Air, and the complete bike coming in at 33.5lb with the build kit shown here (but a FOX DHX2 Air in place of the coil shock). Morpheus isn't shy to say that the Conspiracy's low weight and reportedly high strength is a byproduct of them working with Quebec-based engineering firm FactionBike Studio, an outfit that offers everything from industrial design work, engineering services, and consulting, which are resources that other brands have also employed but are less likely to admit to.

Morpheus Conspiracy DH bike
The bike's chain and seat stays are carbon fiber, and the post mount features replaceable steel barrels for the bolts to thread into. The bike will also come with a Syntace 12 x 157mm thru-axle rather than the hand made one shown here.
Morpheus Conspiracy DH bike
Internal cable routing makes for clean lines, and the rubber port covers can be pulled off to make cable changes easy.

Morpheus explained that, after the Boomerang's aborted life, they knew that they had to turn to the experts to create a lightweight, reliable machine. They even went so far as to divulge that they purchased a carbon Specialized Demo to use as a benchmark for things like chassis rigidity and overall feel - it's not an uncommon practice for any serious company to use products from their competition for this reason, but few will cop to it - but they also claimed that they feel the Conspiracy is a step forward compared to what their rivals offer when it comes to suspension performance and handling.

Priced to Sell

The other big story here is the bike's price: it's going to be a lot less expensive than most other carbon fiber downhill bikes on the market, and in some cases even half as much. The model pictured here sports the premium build kit, which includes FOX's DHX2 shock and 40 RC2 fork, a set of Race Face's SIXC carbon cranks, and SRAM's X0DH seven-speed drivetrain, will sell for $5,395 USD and ship to the customer with a set of Morpheus branded race pants, jersey and goggles. The standard build kit, with a BoXXer Team and Vivid R2C shock, retails for $3,895 USD; the bare frame with a FOX DHX2 shock will go for $2,495 USD.
Morpheus Conspiracy DH bike
That's one curvy tapered head tube.

Morpheus say that this pricing is possible for two reasons: first and foremost is their new consumer-direct sales that allows the customer to order the bike directly off their new website, a route which can obviously help in lowering the bike's final price due to there being less people taking a cut; and second, Morpheus confessed that the downhill bike market simply isn't one where they expect to make much in the way of profits. Either way, the Conspiracy's pricing is sure to make many riders happy when the bike becomes available in the first half of 2016.

Morpheus Conspiracy
Morpheus has used a proven Horst Link suspension design to control the bike's 200mm of rear wheel travel.

Suspension Design

While the all-carbon frame and impressive pricing are sure to be big talking points, the Conspiracy's suspension design is much more traditional. The bike's Horst Link layout, which became open for use by other companies only half a year ago, has been employed because Morpheus feels that it's proven itself over many years. That's not to say that they've just gone ahead and copied other brand's leverage curve, though, as they claim that theirs is unique to the Conspiracy but also compatible with all shocks on the market, air or coil. They weren't to keen to expand on exactly how it behaves, however, only saying that while it's progressive enough to keep the rider off the end of the shock's stroke, it also does some distinctive things throughout the travel.

One of the goals of the design was to not just have a downhill bike with the stereotypical plowing abilities that one associates with 200mm of travel, but to create a bike that feels more alive and playful. They claim that they've done exactly that, but also that, due to a leverage curve that allows a shock's full damping adjustment range to be utilized if needed, a rider is also able to dial-in more of a monster truck personality if that's what they're looking for. The Conspiracy's pedalling abilities are also said to be quite impressive, but we'll have to wait until we get a test ride on the bike in the near future to confirm or deny that point. The shock's low position in the frame - the canoe-shaped lower portion of the down tube is even open on the bottom to allow the shock to sit as close to the ground as possible - should make for a very low center of gravity.
Morpheus Conspiracy DH bike
The hollow carbon rocker link's main pivot is captured within the seat tube.

Morpheus will offer the Conspiracy in three sizes when it becomes available in the first half of 2016, all of which will feature much longer front ends than Morpheus has offered in the past: the medium-sized bike will have a 450mm long reach, and all three sizes will sport a 63 degree head angle and 13.6" high bottom bracket height.

The Conspiracy is clearly a big step forward from the Boomerang prototype that never made production (there were only ever fifteen manufactured), and that aborted bike has obviously served as a lesson as to what not to do when it comes to designing and manufacturing a downhill machine. This time around, Morpheus looks to have put together what looks like a winner, although actually riding the bike will be the only way to verify that. We'll be getting one the first available production bikes to test for that very reason, so expect a review of the Conspiracy in the future.

Well it looks like a Session frameset is $1,000 more than this entire bike.

I actually like it a lot. Hope they will find a way to send some bikes to Europe.

Always seems like smaller brands either have boutique pricing, or affordable pricing & boutique availability, here's hoping these guys aren't constantly out of stock.

I want to know who comes up with idiotic names like Conspiracy. It is a movie title not a bike.......oh ya....the comic book bike...Morpheus
  • 11 2
@madmon With that logic why aren't you complaining about bike names like the Session, G-Spot, Gambler, and Tsar Bomba? Conspiracy doesn't sound like a bad name at all.

Nah, It's a completely different design and this new design looks more sound. I sorta like the new head tube, looks like a good place to beef things up.

The new Demo is actually the old Morpheus's cousin considering they share a very similar axle path:

I think all the jokes on the old Morpheus got used up on this thread:

This bike makes a lot of sense for that price...
That is - until Canyon Bikes wakes up and make a similar full carbon super spec'd dh bike for 4,500$
  • 4 1
Carbon Kona Operator is $4899 CAD, Carbon Devinci Wilson is $4099CAD, it doesn't have to be that expensive!
  • 6 0
Canyon needs to step it up and sell in the U.S. first...
  • 2 0
Absolutely, I'm dying to have a canyon.
  • 4 1
Complete Morpheus with "standard" kit for $3895. Horst link, good components, and lightweight? I'll take one.
  • 6 1
 >"Carbon Kona Operator is $4899 CAD"

Boxxer RC vs Fox 40 RC2
Kage vs Fox DHX2
Zee VS SixC cranks and X0DH

I'd say the extra $600 is well worth it.

>Carbon Devinci Wilson is $4099CAD

Boxxer RC vs Fox 40 RC2
Kage vs DHX2
Zee vs Carbon SixC and X0DH
Elixir 5 vs Guides

Those really weren't the best comparisons. The Morpheus is WAAAYYY better specced.

Shit, you could buy the Morpheus, buy the new Wilson 27.5 frameset for $2700, and have a bike specced as well (Arguably better) as the $7000 Wilson with an extra Carbon Conspiracy frame as a backup (if for some reason you really didn't want the Morpheus frame).
  • 1 0
I hated my canyon, luckily i switched to Trek. Not going to buy another one though, the prices are madness...

  • 11 3
"The bike's Horst Link layout, which became open for use by other companies only half a year ago"

only in the good ole US of A. The rest of the world told spesh to GTF with their patent applications
  • 11 1
 That head tube tho
  • 5 0
 Really nice looking frame that.

Allthough: Before I would consider this for my next bike (which is highly plausible), I'd need to know if they plan to put integrated fork bumpers on it and if they use standardized sealed bearings so that I could change them with Enduro Bearings when time comes to change them.
  • 1 0
Are they really worth it? Some of them seem quite expensive
  • 2 1
What actually are these aforementioned enduro bearings? Lol they sound like the epitome of 'enduro' marketing. So what gives? Do they climb and descend better? Wink
  • 3 0
Enduro just makes good bearings. Pretty sure they existed long before the 'Enduro' format was popular/existed...
  • 2 0
@bobman7 is right they've been making quality bearings for ages.

@SmashedFungi I work in a bike shop, so I get good prices on them, but they last longer than most other options, and are cheaper than say, SKF. So in the long run it's worth the investment.

  • 5 2
"the medium-sized bike will have a 450mm long reach, and all three sizes will sport a 63 degree head angle and 13.6" high bottom bracket height." should have had an information in fahrenheit in that sentence just to make sure, you used all possible units in one sentence.
seriously pinkbike, how much time does it take to just include both units simultaneously? pretty sure its way less than all of us googling: 13.6" in cm - which is 34,5 cm btw. would be really appreciated
  • 21 0
they're just using the IMBMMS (international mountainbike mixed measurements standard) - ie, parts are weighed in grams, but bikes in pounds, tire widths in inches, but hubs in mm, steerer diameters in inches, but stem reach in mm, etc ad nauseum. it's just how we wrap our thick skulls around things.
  • 2 0
Yeah, we should only use sae from now on!!!

  • 5 0

  • 5 2
 "Strong, light, cheap. Pick two."

Keith Bontrager

Something seems odd about a 200mm travel DH bike that weighs 33.5lbs and costs 5k. The long term review of this bike will tell us if Bontrager is right.
  • 6 1
I think that's just because our sense of price has been so warped by years of $10,000 bikes.

$5500 USD isn't cheap. It's not uber expensive, but it sure as hell isn't cheap.

If the YT Teus is anything to go by, it's that you can easily have a strong and light DH bike for ~$5000.

flag DARKSTAR63 (Aug 11, 2015 at 7:22) (Below Threshold)
This bike is nowhere near as nice as the Rocky. It's also completely hideous.
  • 4 5
Its 10 times better looking to me...and 1/2 the cost. I'd never buy either, but Rocky is high AF if they think the maiden is gonna be big. I'll go buy two YTs...
  • 5 2
Everybody keeps saying that, and that's fine. Go buy two YT's. Let's talk about this particular frame vs something like the Rocky. The Rocky looks very nicely made, this frame looks cheap by comparison and imo is not very elegant. The head tube looks like an alien egg. It's all personal taste but to call out Rocky like they missed the mark when what they have is very well done and finely tuned machine - as well as a lack of direct sales model - just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. So to answer your question on RMB's behalf, no, this is not what they were going for.
  • 4 2
Dude I had a flatline for a couple seasons, I'm a rocky fanboy in a way. But go read the people's comments on that post about the maiden. I think you'll notice you stand out. Nicely made? Yes. All rockys are nicely made. But that doesn't change how insanely ugly that bike is to me personally. It looks like a tough, rugged, tank honestly. But thats not entirely what appeals to me. I gotta have a sleek sexy rig that is also tough and durable. Does this morpheus scream longevity to me? Not at all but it wasnt my point. My point is it looks way better than the maiden. You cant deny that YT has something going on here. They sell a durable, good looking DH rig at a fair price in the U.S. What else can you ask for? Anyone who pays 10K for a DH bike, EVEN IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, needs a lobotomy in my opinion. Rocky is becoming a boutique brand.
  • 1 2
But again, it's not what they were going for, it's not the same market. Looks are so subjective I'd rather not debate that. I can not possibly over state how little value I give the comments section on pink-bike as a barometer for success of a given bike. I've had many Rocky Mountains (I don't anymore, I own an Intense and a Trek) so I can tell you I have always liked their aesthetic the Maiden included. This bike looks cheap, it just looks like a catalogue plastic bike to me and I could be totally off base It just doesn't appeal. YT, well I have to admit I kind of like the YT bikes and would consider owning one, but I don't let that take merit away from the more "boutique" brands. Just like I wouldn't knock an exotic sports car for being less of a "value" than a lower priced, less refined go fast car. That's all I'm saying. Going direct and targeting value customer will work for many of these brands, and these companies are changing the game. But there will always be those willing to shell out a few extra bucks for something different.
  • 1 3
I dont know what you mean by not the same market... Do you mean not the same demographic? Cause the Tues may not be a boutique bike like a V10 but they are in the same market (DH bike). The rich dentist down the street who rides DH once a month will go buy a V10 carbon and the freerider/racer who hits the bike park 3-4 times a week and spends way more coin actually going places to ride his bike will buy the Tues. That's the difference in the markets to me I guess. Like I said I think its more of a demographic than a separate market per se. I personally have seen one, as in ONLY one V10 at my local resorts (Park City, UT). And that's a lot of mountain bikes in one area at one time. And I'm not stereotyping at all but the guy who showed up one day with his Intense 951 DVO edition that he bought the night before riding Canyons ended up crashing on his first run and busted his 8K bike up pretty good. I'm not a stellar rider by any means, but I cant help but snicker when I see a guy like that show up and then totally eat shit. I see a lot of people like that buying both the mainden AND this morpheus.
  • 2 1
I guess I just miss the LC2R suspension on the flatlines. I think rocky should have just refined that a little and made it lighter instead of going with the "session" design that everyone else is going to. I like the Operator, Glory, Session, Aurum style of rear linkage and all but what I loved about my flatline was how solid that LC2R rear end felt. It was unique.
  • 5 0
I actual want to hear from 'the rich dentist' lol. I've talked about him, so have many other people. Where is he? And what bike did he actually buy?
  • 3 1
I think you will always have people, even those who "actually ride" willing to/wanting to spend more for a bike. I see lots of V10's on the mountain. Ridden by lots of types. I don't fully subscribe to the notion that any time to see a high end bike, that individual doesn't know how or deserve to ride that bike. I know people with cheap bikes that can rip, I people with expensive bikes that can rip. Who cares, you sound bitter when you admit to laughing at somebody who fell and hurt his bike and maybe himself. I will use myself as an example to compare the Morpheus against the Rocky. The Maiden appears to me to have a greater level of quality and detail that appeals and so I would say that I would buy it over the Morpheus. I have not see either In person, so this is speculation. The frame is $2500... I don't know what the Rocky frame only is but if it was $500-$600 more I'd still do it. Just because I like how the Rocky looks. I'm ok with admitting that. With all that being said , I bought my current DH frame deeply discounted and built it up with a fresh fork, wheels and existing parts - so neither of these completes are for me. The biggest savings from the direct sale seems to come from the completes.
  • 2 1
On another note, I loved my Flatline too. Excellent bike and maybe they should have kept the LC2R, but I have not tried this one. I love the big fat pivots that take press fit sized bearings I think that's a cool idea. I am trying out VPP for the first time though and I'm really liking it.
  • 1 1
I'm not hating on you for liking the Maiden at all man. And I'm not bitter at anyone either. I should have pointed out that the dude with the 951 was acting like a complete hardass the second he got off the gondola at mid mountain. Strutting around like he pulled up to the club with a couple playboy bunnies on his arm. Couldn't shut up about his new all green bike he spent 8K on. So naturally (and maybe I'm a bit of an ass myself) I kinda hoped he made a fool of himself. And he did. Sorry but I like riding trails where everyone may not be on the same level but they all treat each other with respect anyway. Sorry but not sorry (I hate that expression)
  • 2 1
Well with that additional info I am ok with him biting it haha, and I agree fully, where I'm from that's pretty much how it is. I don't know that Rocky expects the Maiden to sell in high volume, I'll bet they don't. They appear to be doing well with their trail and enduro bikes It's just that they do need a DH bike for their riders and Rocky faithful, I think that's what that bike is about. The Morpheus appears to be going for the value priced direct sales, they priced it to sell and that's fine, it's just not for everyone.
