Video: Retired Freerider Wins the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Who remembers Carlin Dunne? "Doing tricks helped the sport evolve, helped the sport move forward, but there's still a place for going big,'' Dunne said in New World Disorder 5 while describing his battles with a monster-sized huck in the Utah desert. He crashed twice attempting the move, only to come back a month later and stomp it for the intro to his part in the movie. But we didn't see a whole lot of Dunne after that, with the American focusing on his motorized exploits instead.

He's been pretty successful at it, too, winning his class at the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb twice. His latest victory was on a Ducati, which you can check out above. How's that for some interesting cross-over?

There’s just not enough Ronnie James Dio in bike movies these days.

But thankfully no more Rise Against.

This segment is from NWD 6, not 5, no? 6 is one of my all time favourites. So cool to see this story.

Yea, NWD 6 was the coolest thing I’d ever seen when I was 14 and getting into Dh.

When thinking Pikes Peak, I can only think of Climb Dance: youtu.be/m4CRoDqT4wY
It used to be much cooler when it was a gravel road.

 Goosebumps. That'll never get old.

Wow that video was nice. The start line was 4.03 miles from my front door back in the day. Find a nice turn, set up lawn chairs and a full cooler, and watch a Peterbuilt truck come raging into your corner.........fun drama at the time.

So incredibly lame they were forced to pave that road all the way to the top. Granted, the racing such as this is still a thrill. However, much more of a raw appeal with the mixture of black top and gravel/dirt road drifting.

It is a bit of a shame, but I think it's also been a big reason for the renewed focus on the event, especially from manufacturers. The last handful of years has been epic.

@mikelevy: I live in Denver, been there a few times. The mixed surface was so exciting. True, the newly renewed interest from the likes of Porsche electric division and motorcycles is great to see for sure.

It is a bummer. I loved the mixed surface as a viewer. As a driver I love it paved. Wouldn't have raced it otherwise as it's pretty hard on a car made for asphalt.

I miss Colorado and watching the Pikes Peak Hill Climb from above the alpine line

So I know Pikes Peak mostly comes down to rider, but since it's all paved now why not use a panigale? Cool post either way.

I remember some people I rode with made a remake of this over a decade ago. The crash towards the end is spectacular www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzUAGcq2upU
