Henry and I discuss the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix with special guest, Flavio Briatore, and we try to figure out how the heck Alonso is still so fast at 72 years of age.

We also have terrible opinions about the following:
• Max relaxing and Checo's mindset
• George calling people a "silly goose" while wearing a turtleneck
• Lance's first-lap dive bomb and broken bones
• Ferarri cooking tires and electronics
• Logan Sargeant, AKA Mr. America, quietly impresses
• Pastrami paying his dues
• Ocon's quest for 3 hours' worth of penalties

THE PINKBIKE PODCAST // EPISODE 170 - HENRY & LEVY'S POST-RACE FORMULA ONE SHOW – BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Ocon's quest for 3 hours of penalties

Featuring a rotating cast of the editorial team and other guests, the Pinkbike podcast is a weekly update on all the latest stories from around the world of mountain biking, as well as some frank discussion about tech, racing, and everything in between.

I like that you guys are discussing F1 and I think it would be cool to continue beyond Bahrain but I think it probably should be on a separate podcast from the main pinkbike one which should probably be 90% mountain bike content focused.

Just my 2c.

Oh ......this is for real? I thought it was an ironic piss take so did'nt listen. Is this part of a co-ordinated push to widen the sites readership base; to go with the Mtb for Dummies 7 part series? Directive from above or a pre-emptive action given Outside's nuking of CT.
  • 73 7
@watchmen: "Is this part of a co-ordinated push to widen the site's readership base". Jesus wept - Levy and I just like F1.
  • 23 4
@watchmen: While I don't mind the F1 content at all, I defo agree that the whole "MTB for dummies" thing screams of Outside influence, and has made PB objectively worse.

@mikelevy: You, Quinney, and Warner doing live race commentary would be all-time... take my money and my Tims!

 @dirtforbreakfast:
And the amazing part is, it’s all still free!
I’m paying too much for F1 commentators that give me a headache by the end of every feature.
Quinney (and Jalyon Palmer) prove you don’t have yell just because it’s F1 and you’re British.

@mikelevy: I like listening to your guys insight on f1, separate podcast might be ideal and fun. I’d probably listen to that as much as any PB podcast.I enjoy a good gearhead discussion. On a side note, I once arm wrestled Toto Wolf. The bastard is strong.

Funny, Henry mentioned on another podcast what's the point of ebike racing if they all have motors, well what about car racing? They all have the same tech. It's a joke, they choose who the big stars will be and use it as another way to promote fossil fuel companies.
  • 9 3
@ichabodchain: e-bikes are alternative to normal bikes. I don’t think f1 is the motorized version of the flintstone racing series. and btw how did your bike get shipped to you? Did they walk it over from shenzhen?
  • 6 1
@ichabodchain: They don’t all have the same tech, that’s why the MacLaren is so slow this year and the Red Bull is so fast.
For the record I’m a MacLaren fan

They may be able to overtake me on the wider and smoother stuff, but when it gets tight, steep, rooty and rocky, I leave them in the dust. Still, they're cheaters. I'm cool with you discussing car racing but please give me a filter. I live in The Netherlands, we're bombarded with this Max shit right down to the local supermarket (as they're his sponsor). Pinkbike was my safe space.

@watchmen: just since you mentioned the nuking of CT... all the main CT guys (including the original founder) are starting up their own independent site over at escapecollective.cc. They're doing a kickstarter-style membership sale to get startup funds. 90% funded after 5 days!
  • 7 0
@GeneralGroovus: Nah, e-bikes are nothing compared to F1 car racing. e-bikes are mentioned in bike media but elsewhere you're pretty safe from them. I'm not paying too much attention to them on the trail and judging by latest bikes mentioned here on PB, I probably wouldn't even recognize them as e-bikes. F1 car racing is in the regular newspapers, billboards, supermarket. You can't really get away from them. Though indeed you don't see them in the streets. Not even too sure why it bothers me this much. I think it is mainly because this single rider is getting more exposure than for instance the Olympic BMX medal winners and Pumptrack Worlds winner combined whereas the latter three would be much more sensible rolemodels for kids to aspire to. "Go kids, stay inside and play your gameconsoles. Maybe you'll ever be as good as big Max Jr." I'd rather see kids hit their pumptracks en masse with whatever rolls without a motor. That'd be what could get city councels to build more proper pumptracks. What do we get instead? More tarmac and faster internet. Jay.

And no, I'm not going to breathe, dammit!

@vinay: Hey I'm all for Max getting taken out, so I'm with you there. It's kind of a Canadian underdog bias that's baked into the culture...(expat enjoying CA for for 31 yrs)

My old man, who at 90 is still driving sports cars with 3 pedals and has a barn/work shop full of things two and four wheels, gifted myself and my brothers with a passion for wheels. As I have to my sons. He also gifted us a work ethic, not a silver spoon.
This is relevant for a number of reasons on this awesome (mostly) PB comments section that we all love.

What the old boy taught me was tolerance and variety are pretty good things. We loved two stroke crotch rocket street bikes and rode the hell out of them. That was knee puck/leathers riding was adrenaline fun.
But you know what else put a shit eating grin on our faces too? Choppers. An entirely different kind of fun but strangely enough categorized as the the same sport. Mods and Rockers type thing for those that know.

Eebs are that for me. I love bikes and I'm lucky enough to own a number of them, DH, Beach Road, bla ba bla. I love my Eeb. Amazeballs!
But even in a fully eMTB legal jump line environment I have encountered and witnessed e-hate and vitriol. Dude, it's bikes. Have fun.

Re kids, Ya mine have grown up in the video game/iPhone world. It's not easy. Social media is a hell of a thing. But all that shit is a choice.
Mine are fit, they are athletic. One games, the other two not. The kids will be fine. They always are. And one rides an Eeb (N+1) He's lands jumps in manuals, I like following him, pure joy. The only way I can do that is on an Eeb.

I'm not giving up the adrenline fun the Eeb gives me. Ever. This "go hiking" if you can't handle repeated up lines is Bullshit.
Oh, and the train more thing? Moron logic at work..."Hey Nino, if you train harder you could be a DH Champion too!"
I f'ing hated climbing at 25 and I hate climbing now. It ain't changing. Ever. Jumping fresh is how you prevent crashing. Hello my Beautiful Eeb!

To Quote K-Mags Magnum Opus, - don't like my Eeb? "Suck my Balls!" In a nice way though, I am Canadian :-)

Now Jay, for the Love of God, Breeeeathe!

  • 3 2
@GeneralGroovus: Why do you keep going on about the e-bikes? Indeed my first post was meant as a parody on how people typically complain about e-bikes but in my next post I mentioned they don't bother me much. You went on about how you do like them but we're not having a discussion there. See, I can understand how e-mtb is being featured on the existing mountainbike websites. But I'm sure there already F1-enthusiast websites where fans can submerge themselves as much as they like. Pinkbike is not the only website on the internet. Visit those you care about. I also like to read about the regular news, guitars, BMX, unicycles etc. Doesn't mean everything needs to be bleed from one site to the other. Sure it can be nice to just highlight something interesting which people would otherwise not come across. Something of an other niche sport, something about nature. But those interested in F1 car racing probably know all about it already.

Now I do realize maybe it is just us over here (and the Brits maybe) who are getting bombarded like that. For a good while, I knew next to nothing. I knew his dad was competing in F1 too for a while. All I remember is that picture of his car being alight because they had been messing with the refueling systems so that they could refuel faster. f*cking idiots. Trying to gain fractions of seconds at the peril of their mechanics. About ten years later, we had also designed and built a car. Not for F1, just for solar car racing. Shortly before our departure to Australia we had a series of test drives on a closed track. I wasn't driving, I was just the mechanic working overnight preparing the car, preparing toolkits, spares etc. I slept during daytime so I had no jet-lag whatsoever once we arrived in Australia Wink . Anyway, the last day of testing a F1 car driver by the name of Christian Albers would come over to testdrive the car. I was pretty clueless who he was and even moreso why and how a F1 car driver is going to test a car like ours. I was honestly surprised when it wasn't just this driver, but a whole lot of media who rocked up at the track! So yeah, it was indeed possible to ignore the whole thing and not be bothered back then. Nowadays, at least over here, there is no way you can.

I guess the thing that annoyed me most was the Sportsmen of the Year election. Nominees were Harry Lavreysen, a pretty dominant track cyclist who did well too at the Olympics. Niek Kimmann who has already been dominant ever since he became an elite BMX racer. Knocked over an official at the Olympics (who crossed the track without watching) during training, crashed, cracked a kneecap, walked back to check the official, eventually still won gold. And Max, lands a car on top of his rival, doesn't even bother to check, eventually goes on the win his first series overall just because of a nonstandard decision by the officials. Max becomes Sportsman of the Year. As apparently a true sportsman doesn't care about his fellow racers as much as his dad didn't give a damn about the health of his mechanics.

So yeah I see my rant may be primarily aimed at Max but it also bothers me how the sport of F1 seems to be held in disproportionally high regard with respect to other sports. Some could say this goes for soccer too but at least it is a sport that connects, gets people out there and do something. It is something any kid can try and do. Same for having a blast on a pumptrack on whatever rolls. F1 car racing, what does that give kids to learn and aspire to? Those with the money may be able to get into go-kart racing but otherwise, computer games are probably the closest you can get.

So sorry Love of God, I'm still not going to breathe. Dammit!
  • 2 0
@vinay: Copy your work in Aus, cool stuff. Yes, Max's stardom chafes me too. That Monza move was dirty. Ha, better hope someone topples Redbull but Adrian Newey's cars seem to have the edge at the moment. And Max is fast, no doubt.

I've had the opposite experience to you being held up on steep sections by an E rider. A dude literally rolled up to me and a riding buddy, started slamming ebikes and rode off...we followed him down the jump line he took, he was slow and skipped the gap jumps. Wow. So per normal folks have different views and experiences.

I think F1 does give kids something to aspire to. Big time. Either as a driver, an engineer/technician or one of many other facets within Motorsport. Racing drives innovation. Racing drove bikes to what our current marvels are, in any discipline. I am very thankful for racing! It inspires education, travel, hobbies, fitness, friendships, man, the list goes on and on.

Re gaming, the F1 driving games/sims are crazy fun and addictive. I wouldn't know anything about that though. Not a thing.

As for the F1 Podcast, I'm thumbs up, you're thumbs down. A drop down tab should fix that, no? Click or don't click.

Cheers.

@GeneralGroovus: Cheers mate, my "joke" in my initial post was probably misinterpreted. I said a F1 car can't keep up when the mountainbike trail gets technical. Since I have to explain the joke, it is probably not funny so I'll leave it at that. Again as for e-bikes, I'm not really paying attention what they're riding. Good manners are good manners regardless of what one is riding. If you want to overtake, do so in a way that causes minimal trail erosion and causes minimal danger to those involved. Similarly if you notice someone is behind you who may be faster, spot a place where you can make some room and communicate. Just manners basically, it shouldn't be necessary to write everything down into hard and strict rules. But yeah whether someone is riding with pedal assist, I usually don't even notice nor do I care. It is all about how someone interacts with their surroundings.

We have different views on racing cars and I accept that. We can't argue about what we like or dislike, it doesn't make sense. We can express it and that's it. We did that, it is fine now. And indeed, I initially just asked (in my first post here) for a F1 filter just like they have an e-bike filter. I don't have the e-bike filter enabled but would engage an F1 filter. We do all like bikes so let's just celebrate that here. Cheers!

 I love this idea @mikelevy and @henryquinney!

During the Pinkbike Racing Podcast last year F1 came up regularly during the podcast when comparing the elite world of DH racing and DH bikes and F1 and the technology that goes into F1 cars.

Yes, discussing F1 is off-topic but it's still racing and I think there is a lot of overlap in the DH fanbase with the F1 fanbase. I could be wrong but I really enjoyed the Pinkbike racing podcast and I loved these last two podcasts about F1.

Since I didn't see a Pinkbike Racing fantasy F1 league I created one called "Bucket Boys"

fantasy.formula1.com/en/leagues/join/P4FYLJRK602

It's open to the public so if anyone is interested in it's out there. Maybe Pinkbike could sponsor some podium prizes for the fantasy league... Long shot I know. Nevertheless, I think it would be a fun thing to do until World Cup racing starts again.

 Loved this, more please.
Here's my meeting some F1 drivers story (actually relevant to MTB): Was waiting at the shuttle pickup in Rotorua at the end of 2017 and started chatting to a couple of guys about the trails, both generic looking MTB riders in helmets and glasses and pads etc. Both had very nice Treks. Didn't recognise the first guy but when the second guy spoke I recognised his voice and thought "he sounds like Brendon Hartley", so then I had a closer look at the second guy and it was fricken Daniel Ricciardo!
I blurted out "holy shit I just realised who you guys are" which made them laugh. I didn't geek out or hassle them for photos and just chatted some more, I even hassled them about taking it easy because aren't they technically Red Bull athletes? Then I wished them both the best of luck for the next season, especially Brendon as it was going to be his first full year.
They had just been to Waiheke for Brendon's Marriage (which made me wonder why he wasn't on his honeymoon and instead was at the bike park with Danny).
Then I think other people started to take notice and they decide to ride up the hill instead of coming on the bus. Fair enough too because on the bus some dickheads were a bit loud saying things like "Ricciardo! he should be f*ckin on here with us", like they were owed something just because they were famous F1 drivers.
I think they were enjoying their anonymity and I'm glad I restrained myself and let them enjoy their day out on the bikes.

But with the cost of e-bikes this year, he still won’t be able to afford more than one Wink

I understand what it’s like to work in a passion driven industry, and when you are expected to be completely enthused in your industry all the time, while your extracurricular interests might differ from your day to day. The absolute interest and enthusiasm you guys exfoliate while talking about F1 is genuine and I listened to both episodes and engaged wholeheartedly. I even think this is kind of revolutionary in podcasting as it is so off topic from the normal podcast, and from such a different perspective, that I imagine it is more grassroots and more interesting than a normal F1 podcast and therefore likely refreshing for a typical F1 podcast. Good on you, and keep putting them up. Also… need a podcast on aliens too, but make sure Henry has a dose of mushrooms before said podcast. Also… please bring up the lizard people under DIA, because I think that’s a thing.

Gonna get boring quick if we have 2 F1 podcasts every race weekend.

What's the next tinpot-side-project - Park Talks Printing?

Come on Brian 4 hours of you waffling on about 3D printing has to be a match for how interesting and relevant this content is on a mountain bike site.

I'd be all about more random podcasts by these guys. Love the bike ones, but end of the day good content is good content.

@Larkey1: Doing F1 podcast on PB's acct is just dumb all the way around dilutes content for PB and loses listner's, plus there's no reason Levy/Henry couldn't do this on their own and reap all the benefits if it does well.

polo and badminton live broadcasts are next for Outsde.

Danny Ricciardo must have loved the implosion of McLaren. Get him on the podcast! He rides mtb as well.

I love this but I cannot believe you are getting away with this.

@brianpark please entertain the initiative

"How's your relationship with fear?" The word you are looking for is "maturity." If the situation calls for doing sketchy shit...then you do sketchy shit. If it doesn't...then it doesn't.

 @mikelevy @henryquinney

I like a good acronym, I think the podcast should be called The Henry and Mike F1 podcast, with HaM FOne as the acronym. AKA the "ham phone" podcast.

Love both of these F1 podcasts. You guys are knowledgeable and hilarious! Keep up the good work.

As being a huge fan of F1 AND of Pinkbike - especially Henry and Levy - this is absolute gold in terms of entertainment.

I gotta say after years not watching F1 the Netflix series made come back again to it

Same here. Even though some of it is a bit staged (as the guys mentioned), the editing and story-telling (as they say in film school) are terrific. It's more interesting than the racing (and I enjoy the racing).

Question for the next one—can watching F1 make you a better mountain bike racer?

I am here for any Levy and Henry content but I was lost in most of that chat. Maybe branch it out fellas and discuss a variety of topics that interest you.

Lots of random off-topic podcasts incoming for 2023.

Please, no more F1 podcasts! I come to this site for MTB content, not this. I am always excited when a new Pinkbike podcast drops, but 2 F1 podcasts in a row?! What a disappointment. Stay on topic please and thank you!

Easy way to not get mad about this....don't click the link. I am always amazed when people get mad about content they don't like or agree with....then don't click it and move on...not hard folks.

I love that they are doing an F1 podcast, it's a passion project and they are having fun with it. #LETSGOOOOOO

F1 cars are cool. F1 racing is not very good racing. F1 has a hell of brand. Best car racing on the planet is Dirt Late Models -

FE is annoyingly exciting as well, but nothing beats motorbike racing if you want back-and-forth action.
