Video: Tackling a Rocky Technical Climb in Fort William

by Miles Mallinson

Here's another Nadge video for you. Bit more brutal this time, this trail is a lot shorter but the sections are a bit more demanding. That and the weather was boiling! Thanks to Mark Clark of Alba Mountain Bike who braved the 24 degrees heat mixed with some midgies. What is quite hard to put across in this video is there's a huge cliff off to the right that you do not want to fall down.

Thanks very much for everyone's comments in the last one!

Next video will be heading up the biggest mountain in the country.

Nice to see videos of climbing. I know most of the guys here are in descents, but IMHO you must earn your dows first.

Thanks! Unfortunately the down is much sketchier than the up haha

 So...many...hops.

@miles-mallinson-bike: That was excellent, very inspiring, and you didn't even get out of breath... Would love to see a video of the down too.

Can we get a climbing video (thats not e bike) that is just mashing up tech climbs without the trials hops? Not that this is any less impressive, Ive just never seen someone out on the trail ride like this video.
  • 5 1
Yeah true, you just wouldn't be able to do as many technical features.
  • 9 3
I agree! This is an impressive feat, but I prefer to see pure technical climbing without the unnecessary trials hops.

@salespunk: yeah that would be good to see for sure. I don't have any climbs that are interesting enough round here that that is possible on unfortunately, everything has big steps or steep small ones.

One of my favorite walks, scenery when it opens up is up there with the best of anywhere.

"What is quite hard to put across in this video is there's a huge cliff off to the right that you do not want to fall down." There's even a sign at the start of the trail warning danger of death!

Well done to the cameraperson, that was well shot.

Pretty scary place, luckily there's loads of trees to hide the danger! Thanks!

Have walked this track and wondered how much would be rideable. For me that answer is still not very much! But hats off to this guy for getting up! Curious to know how he dealt with the wire bridge to get to the hut at the end??
  • 3 0
Don't think they had riding in mind when they built that bridge, it's a death trap haha

Wow, I'm impressed. Balance and timing. Owing to the step ups and gaps, don't know how this trail could be done without the hops. Makes me consider that as a mere mortal, mixing in some trials technique to riding tough stuff could be handy. Dumb question, but are many of those steps, built, or just natural rock formations ? They sure look solid. Thanx for the vid.

Haha yes it’s impossible to just pedal up everything on this track. Most of the stone pitched sections are man made, the bigger stuff is natural

Love a techy climb. Majorly under appreciated.

 Brutal but so fun! Thanks

For you DH only snobs, there's a bit just for you from 1:29-1:31.
  • 2 1
Had to put 2 seconds in just for them haha

More gruesome climb vids, please. They're more educational than some dude launching it off of a manicured ramp in some mountainous country I can't travel to at the moment.

Sure That trail is not made to be rideable on a bike, but how easy would it be on an e-bike?
Been wondering how easy or difficult would be to ride up Fort Bill world cup track?
I have walked it enough to know would be a real challenge even on an E-bike, but for sure could be done, but the wall near the start would be dangerous,
But would like to try to ride up the mountain by an other route!

The steep smooth sections would be good on an e bike but the steep steps would suck. Hard enough hopping a normal bike up. Yeah think most sections of the downhill track would be do able, off beat wall and up the landing of the step down I highly doubt is rideable

 Thank you!

Good effort Miles, I'd have been in the gorge whatever way I tried! Slightly disappointed you didn't try the wire bridge ????
  • 1 0
Cheers Lee, mmm nah the bridge would be awful can barely walk over the thing.
  • 2 0
Such skill, definitely makes the climbs look good! I feel we should all take a moment to appreciate the poor crew braving the 24 degree heat lol.
  • 3 0
Yeah, that made me chuckle. If that’s a hot day I may consider moving! I’m not one for high temps and we’ve already had a number of near 40C days with humidity. Ugh.
  • 3 0
@pourquois-pas: haha true! When you're used to it being under 8 degrees for most of the year 24 degrees feels very hot.
  • 5 1
Flats for the win! Cool to watch and try to pick up some of that technique
  • 4 1
Yes! Always flats. Would not want to bail in clips off some of those cliffs also.
  • 3 0
Got damn impressive. Talk about earning your down!
  • 2 1
Not much enjoyable down on this unfortunately haha

@miles-mallinson-bike: oh well, always great to watch great tech climbers do their thing regardless!

I could watch this all day. Incredible riding and gorgeous trail.

@miles-mallinson-bike: Wow! Great bike check! Just shows how much its the rider and not the bike. What bike is coming soon? New Carbon Scout?
