José Borges is thirty years old, born in Santa Maria da Feira and undoubtedly one of today’s most irreverent Portuguese athletes. Endowed with incredible strength, “Zé Manel” - as he is known, holds eight National Championship titles (5 for Enduro and 3 for Downhill), as well as being the only Portuguese athlete to win the Mega Avalanche in France.

Still in Enduro and in 2018, he was ranked 11th in the EWS - Enduro World Series. As for other sports – in urban downhill, Borges has already won the “Marisquino” in Spain five times. He is currently an official athlete of the UCI formation, Miranda Factory Team.

How did you get into the world of bikes?

In 2005 I went with my father to see a downhill race close to my home town. We both love the sport and the following year I started competing.

You started in downhill but the truth is that you are currently a reference in the enduro scene. Was it an option? Or have you seen other capabilities in this regard?

I think it was a little bit of both. It was an option because the enduro “fitted” perfectly with my athletic characteristics. After the transition year I realized that this could be a sport on the rise at a worldwide level and here I am.

Despite your enviable achievements, your career was not just a success. Have you had many injuries over the years?

Yes, I've been through a lot of injuries, but luckily I've always managed to recover in the best way. I remember one year managing to break my arms three times, but the reality is that we always learn from mistakes. I currently ride more cautiously and end up opting for “cleaner” and safer lines.

What is your favourite spot? Tell us everything.

I really like La Thuile in Italy. I love the long descents, technical, physical zones and a breathtaking surrounding landscape. Without a doubt, the Mont-Blanc area is fantastic.

What are the main qualities that an enduro athlete should have?

A physical capacity above the usual, to be able to descend quickly on sight (80% of the speed in the first descent and to choose trajectories well), good reflexes and to not leave aside the technique. You can be very good at cycling, but if you don't know how to go downhill, it will be difficult to be an elite athlete.

You have already been in an international team with all the conditions and perks, however this season you have returned to Portugal. What is the reason for this change?

Sometimes people may think that when I returned to Portugal I took a step back in my career. It's wrong! I continue to have excellent conditions (if not better ones) in this new structure. I am very happy to be part of the Miranda Factory Team, because in addition to being a Portuguese brand that has always supported me, I am able to spend more time with my family and friends.

How do you see yourself in 20 years? Will bicycles always be part of your life?

I no longer see myself out of this world. In the future I have personal projects that will obviously include bicycles. Let's see how the next years are going to play out, I still have a lot of racing ahead, so one thing at the time.

If you had more time, what other sports would you like to do?

Everyone knows that I am passionate about motorsports, more specifically motorcycles. I would like to compete in the National Enduro Championship again, however I am aware that it takes a lot of time and dedication. Still on bicycles, I would like to participate in road races. I usually train with several professional athletes, and honestly I think I would give them some “work” (laughs).

Do you want to leave a message of encouragement to everyone reading this interview, at a particularly difficult time for everyone?

I just want to encourage people to protect themselves as much as possible, taking advantage of situation to spend more time with the family, and above all to learn the true meaning of the word solidarity.
