Goodfellas: Val di Sole World Cup Qualification

Top mobsters from today's shoot-out in the Italian woods were, in descending order, Hill, MacDonald, Smith, Gwin and mafia boss-supreme, Atherton. Gee shot straight and true, gunning down all the big names once again, with a margin of almost one and a half seconds over the *usual* suspect, Gwin. Atherton looked absolutely comfortable, almost peaceful as he picked his way through the ragged and sun-mottled rock gardens, begging the question of whether anyone will be able to get in the way of his intimidating good form come Sunday. There were other known threats showing up within the top 10, the most notable being Hart and Minnaar in 6th and 7th, but there were plenty more looking dangerous enough to be the new De Niro.

Roost was a big theme of the day.... Here's youngest guy in the men's division, Richey Rude, leaking loam all over.

Morning practice was a bit of a gong show as the riders were pushing and the track wasn t pushing back--berms that looked solid-ish would blow apart when hit just right sending more than one rider to the dirt. Not so sweet when you ve just kissed the dirt and Devinci s Mark Wallace coming in hot on dirt filled slip n slide chute...

What you can't grasp from pictures or videos alone is how steep the majority of sections are. The typical view up the hill tends to flatten things out significantly, but rest assured it's not safe to be here whichever side of the tape you're on. When riders bail at this level, on this terrain, there's no telling where bike, rider or boulders will grind to a halt. The crash nets certainly bulged with a rich catch this evening.

The number everyone wants to have here at Val di Sole. It s not a light burden expectations are enormous when you pin this on. Look for example to the internet blowing up with Aaron Gwin--the two time World Cup overall winner and heavily favored in Fort William--taking a loooong step off the box last week. No the expectations of wearing number one carry a lot of weight.

Honestly stoked for any of the contenders...and that means all of them.
Hill- for the comeback.
Stevie- 'cause his time has come.
Gee- absolutely dialed and work ethic deserves every #1 he can get.
Peaty- I'd like to see him on the podium again.
Gwinny- to shut up the naysayers...because its not about the bike.
And the list goes on and on...

For the first time, I am addicted to DH! Looking forward to hearing about the results tomorrow!

Been following WC DH for over a decade and this is looking like it's going to be a season for the ages. A real good variety of tracks thru the season doesn't hurt the chances of that, either. Unfortunately, you'll only get the XC results tomorrow. DH is on Sunday. Until then, go ride! Smile

Hope Gwinny does better this round!!!

And I hope he (Gwin) does really well also just for the reason that I want to see a WC battle! It's insane how fit and determined Gee is.
  • + 22
Cheezey.... probably fair to say you're not on the same page as these guys.... otherwise why aren't you there racing against them??

 Pour cold water on burn.

Brook MacDonald; he's like Kovaric and Rennie at their best. All rolled up into a freight train of bad ass. I'm sure he has BIG things in his future.
  • + 20
Super pumped to see gee doing what he has been trying so hard to in the last couple years
  • + 7
He's had some tough breaks with mechanicals and injuries, but has always been near the top despite that.
  • + 12
Ratboy can have any socks in the world. But he chooses my grandfathers tubes!
  • + 1
 Nice catch.
  • + 1
White tube socks are about the coolest thing to ride in. I love it when I go out for a few runs at my local spots, run into some guys in matching kits and neck braces, and I smoke them wearing a white t-shirt and white tube socks.
  • + 7
Haha both of those crash pictures are of the same guy, get off the ground Benny Hill!
  • + 2
why would anyone in their right mind ride this stuff with no gloves ??? 7th pic down.. dude going down in the rocks... OUCH.... i know the gloves wont help broken but they would def help in abrasion/cuts/slices/dices... (as a motorcycle guy i can relate to the gear they wear)
  • + 2
For some of the riders, they want to feel the bike more directly in their hands and they feel the gloves lessen their feel. I choose gloves, personally - to each their own!
  • + 2
Its not all about the bike.... Well Gwin off a medium and onto a large and back amongst it. Amazing how the size of a frame can make such a difference, he penciled everything on his winter videos. I would not be surprised if the longer frame allowed him to change spring rate also as his weight distribution would be better. If he is still on the large, how did the team get that so wrong for so long, frame size is schoolboy stuff. You would think they would have tested that! Tomorrow will be interesting.
  • + 1
I think frame sizes can be tunned like stem, bar, cranckset sizes. Shure one size frame is better for each track. Here in Brazil all "good" bike shops say large frames are bad and they just have medium frames for sale. I have amazing results here in Rio de Janeiro with a large frame specialy couse im 6.1
  • + 2
Gee Atherton has always been strong but right now really has his stuff together and it's showing is a much more compelling story than 'the Spez demo killed Gwin's carreer.' But don't take my word for it...
  • + 4
Get in there Jack Reading! defiantly deserves a good result on sunday after puncturing in qualification last week
  • + 4
When it said "in descending order" then started with Sam I though that meant he was first. Darn. Good job gee!

This is looking like it will be the best season of dh to date the field is stacked and the times are so close its just a shame there isnt more rounds in the wc. I'm bummed Mitch didn't get in though was rooting for that guy .

  • + 1
Do what? Win? Unlikely by a long shot.
  • + 2
What is wrong with people? After ONE race in fort William, people are saying Gee has the series in the bag, and Gwin's career is over. Get a grip.
