TREADING ON (SNAKE) EGG SHELLS

What do the box jellyfish, funnel web spider, paralysis tick and the death adder have in common besides equal ability to euthanase? The answer is Queensland, Australia. A lot of the planet's most infamously toxic creatures call this place home. If you look at anything here long enough it will probably start to move. That could be because it's alive or because of the hallucinogenic chemicals in the leaf you just touched. Yep, from the reef to the sugar cane plantations and the deep jungle in between, there's a lot for a foreigner to stress about in these parts. Now we can add one more thing what's scary to the mix- the 2014 DH World Cup track. We're talking burly rockery, super slick mud and monster step-downs, all capped off with a seriously vicious pedal to the line. Damn Australia, you scary.

bigquotesSo we're here in Cairns for the first downhill since they had the Worlds back in '96. The course is looking pretty wild, it's got a bit of everything up there... tight corners, fast sections, roots and some real big jumps. There'll probably be a few snakes on course as well...watch out for them. Trouser snakes too, pretty dangerous. But yeah the tropical weather can throw anything at ya and if it rains it's gonna get really slippery. Should be good!- Wyn Masters - Bulls Bikes

Sam Hill along with many other local Aussies have the home track advantage here in Cairns.
Although never having made a trip to Cairns himself, Sam Hill will be one of the chief Aussies looking to capitalize on the home turf advantage here in 'stralia. If it rains on race day you'd have to fancy his chances all the more.

bigquotesFrom a first look this could be the best track I've seen since I came to DH... It has everything here- so many tight switchbacks at the start, like ten in a row, some really technical rocks and for sure some lines only for those with seriously big balls.  So good. Love these photo walks.

 A real mix
  • + 6
yeah, nice to see the details of what's ahead.. That mud is, for lack of better term, Hella Greasy! Good luck with that!
  • + 6
Sooooo not only do these trees posses the hardness and rigidity of normal trees but they also fight back. Sign me up!
  • + 5
ahah yeah a new element to riding Razz but dam 9 moths of pain treated with acid WTF! cant wait for this race lets go gwin!!!
  • + 1
that looks like a world cup track i'd like to ride!
  • + 6
so yesterday , I heard somebody said this is an enduro track ... after look at this pictures, dude you might want to rephrase back your words ... LOL
  • + 3
 Lets go gwin, lets go.....................win!!!!!!!!

$10 says Gwin is the one moving the tape on the chicken line for the whoops. Mick is gapping them, Gwin can do it too.
  • + 2
tracks flatter then your 13 year old sister....and more slippery then KY on a baby dolphin
  • + 3
@hoolydooly Are you trying to say that the guy with a bunch of moto experience is afraid of whoops? I could hate on people for no reason too....if I were a dick. --Irony.
  • + 0
Yes, yes i am. No doubt he's an awesome rider, but sometimes you've gotta step out of your comfort zone a bit.
  • + 1
@hoolydooly So, you have absolutely nothing to back up your statement and you just don't like Gwin is what you're saying then...got it.
  • + 1
No, gwin was the one quoted saying he wanted the whoops to be removed from the track.
  • + 1
You show me where he said he wanted them removed, all he ever said is that it might be a little much and he hopes no one explodes....
  • + 61
+1 for Sam Hill.... Man deserves to win again.
  • + 3
 definitely
  • + 44
Dunno about spiders but if you run your tyres tubeless then at least you won't have to worry about snake bites.
  • + 14
 bu dum tissss
  • + 18
The largest spider in Australia has been spotted around Kovariks house and it is 29"!!!
  • + 10
Have you not seen the thick thin spider? You can't get it off..
  • + 15
Kovarik was once in the water when the shark siren went off, but it was too late - the shark was already dead.
  • + 20
Wow. I'm glad to see some older riding styles come into play. The track looks great! Can't wait to see Gee, Hannah, and Gwinn battle it out this year!
  • + 17
This track has Hill written all over it
  • + 26
If it rains this Hill will have Hart written all over it Smile
  • + 1
I would say this track is nearly the opposite of what Hill has won on in the past , flat and pedally.
  • + 11
I guess you're being ironic right? Flat, uphill, Sam Hill. Pick 2.
  • + 16
Track looks better in the pics than the vid, that high off camber line looks awesome! My excitement for the race outweighs the disapproval of uphill sections.
  • + 33
And still, a downhillbike is a bicycle, no harm in using the pedals....
  • + 9
what is this blasphamy you speak of? the pedals aren't ment to put power to the back wheel. they only move to allow your ankles to not have bend as much whilst you lean back and forward. and the chain is only there to make the nice clicking sound from the hub. what kind of bikes have you been riding? i have only ever seen ones that you are not supposed to pedal on.
  • + 1
Claudio appeared to be carrying good speed through it... although he did sound winded by the end of it... not sure if that's from the uphill or his constant narration while ripping down, haha.
  • + 3
That should be the final test of a wc track, can claudio make it down without a chain.
  • + 2
from the look of some earlier helmet cam runs from mick, he uses those uphills as a take off! they would only be a problem if the rider dropped momentum in the section before.
  • + 9
Stinging trees? That certainly adds a unique element of risk to the track. So it seems that most of the flora and fauna on the continent is trying to kill you some way or another. The WC track walk features are great. Thanks.
  • + 4
Bad, bad, bad.......the only picture of miss Hannah is out of focus.
come on guys

Great fotos, scary course, wet weather, world cup.......It has all the ingredients.

Good combination for Mr. Hart??

Cheers
  • + 5
 stinging trees, because australia
  • + 5
those things are no joke. i studied abroad for a semester very close to this track, and one of my friends felt the wrath of a stinging tree (Dendrocnide moroides). She would still get periodic intense pain from it more than six months later when more of its poisonous barbs popped deep in her skin. That little tree is gnarly.
  • + 1
kind of a dumb video, but: www.youtube.com/watch?v=33H93Rlzk2w
  • + 12
Yeah the stinging trees, Gee man better be more careful not to make love to any of these ones
  • + 5
Volcano's wont kill you in Australia there is a fun fact for ya. We are the only continent to not have an active on one. They are about the the only thing that wont though.
  • + 2
sting that is known to kill humans in some cases cause its so potent, freaking NUTS! diluted hydrochloric acid as treatment.. geez lol..
  • + 3
It's like this race is held in freaking Jurassic park! Anything can kill you...
  • + 1
 lol
  • + 10
Im sayin mick is gona win. He knows the trail better than anyone else, which in my opinion is one of the biggest advantages u can have, also after South Africa u know he is itchin for a win.
  • - 1
Yeah only thing I would say to that is that fair game? I mean if he wins then you could say well he has had a week of testing here.
  • + 8
I would of thought any racer whos at the sharp end of the point would be going to any track they can before the event to get riding time down , danny hart basically lived at fort bill before the race to improve his chances. I'd say it's totally fair game.
  • + 4
 It's unavoidable, the home advantage.
  • + 2
Nobody seemed to mind the chance of stevie smith having a home advantage last year, or Minnaar at pmb?..
And yeah, its surprising that the top 10 guys don't spend a week riding the world cup tracks before the race, surfers do it in the ASP...
  • + 2
I would bet if PMB was the third or fourth race Minnaar would of stomp everyone. Coming off knee surgery and getting third is impressive. Home advantage does have its place
  • + 1
Yeah I just dont see it that often. Surely if you were really keen youd be heading out to europe straight after australia?
  • + 10
Look at Myriam Nicole standing in the rockgarden. Well, beautiful leggs ! Can't wait to watch the race live on saterday ! I'm STILL. hopin' a huge rain to see Danny Hart's come-back ! Yiiihaaa

  • + 10

It'll be interesting to see how this translates to live video since so much of the track is pretty dense jungle.

Ive ridin this track in the dry... most riders won't even be able to get down without a serious crash or getting off at some point. It is very fast with tight switch backs a nasty rock garden and massive set downs. I think it is going to make for a very interesting race. Bring on Saturday i say!
  • + 1
It's gonna be a mud run, it's 1:45pm and constantly raining all day. Sometimes the sun may come out, then it's stinking hot, mozzies, and big bog holes. Going to be a wild ride at the World Cup!!! Maybe Danny Hart will boom it through like his Worlds takeout!!!!

Australia... Where everything's out to kill you. Including the innocent looking trees.
  • - 2
Looks like another track for the little bikes. No offence meant just the second you add a section of pedalling it doesn't matter how fast Sam Hill can drift in the slick mud - the race is won by whoever can put the hammer down the hardest. Anyone thinking Troy Brosnan for the win being -somewhat- local and riding the little bike? What will Mik be riding? Should be another rad weekend of racing!
