Face Off - The 2013 World Cup Season Finale

Face Off txt

An electric season sparked off back in July with Gee Atherton setting the new standard in the heather of the Scottish highlands. Stevie Smith crossed the line 1.36 seconds behind for 3rd. Next up was hot and dusty Val Di Sole, scene of Atherton's World Champs victory. Here, Smith would be evicted from the hot-seat by his rival in seemingly unstoppable form, by 1 second flat. The fresh, steep pastures of Andorra brought a surprise winner, and Gee was knocked down a peg, but still ahead of Smith in 4th, by 0.92 seconds. In Smith's home territory of Canada, a new chapter of domination began in his favor, with a win over Atherton of 0.9 seconds, in those adversely biased conditions. After a miss for both riders at the World Championships in South Africa and no clear inspiration gained for either party, Norway beckoned and it was Smith all the way in the torrential rain. Gee came to an abrupt halt and lost 8.4 seconds to Smith and spruce.

Here we are just one week later in early autumn of Austria, staring down the barrel of the final round and it's all to play for, fully neck and neck. Gee leaves the qualifying start hut on 966 points and Smith trails by just 17 in the overall standings. Although it may count for nothing, Smith in fact leads the series in time, approximately 6.02 seconds the leader. The race starts with qualifying tomorrow afternoon and whether someone else can take top spot and go on to seal the final is irrelevant. Gee Atherton or Stevie Smith is your 2013 DH World Cup Series victor.

Face Off

What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment of the 2013 season?

bigquotesI am most happy with two things this year: My consistency and also winning Mont St Anne. MSA was really special to me because it was the home race and one of the coolest and oldest tracks. With the history there I was really excited to win that one. I've had my best race season ever and feel really consistent at the moment - Stevie Smith - Devinci Global Racing

bigquotesFort William. Winning on home ground. It wasn't like I wanted to peak for it as a stand out point in the season, but I went in with a will to win and that's a huge drive I think - Gee Atherton - Atherton Racing

Stevie Smith lettin the roost fly as he drops into the first woods.

What has been the key to your increasing levels of success?

bigquotesEvery year I've just gone better and better... I think maybe it's just being a slow learner and putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Even when I accomplished something like last year when I won my first ever world cup and had a good overall - even though that was the dream years ago to finish where I did - every time I achieve something like that I just want to do better and so it's motivated me each winter - Stevie

bigquotesIt's a case of getting all the small elements dialed in. I think I've had quite a few seasons where I've come in feeling good and strong and fit, but then whether it's been not the right bike underneath me or an injury at the start of the season...there's always been something there to hold me back. To do well in a world cup season you have to have all these different elements dialed. You have to have a good team around you, a great bike underneath you and for me this year that's what it's all been about - Gee

...

Have you changed your approach to racing in recent times?

bigquotesI wouldn't say my approach has changed... I still try to keep it fun, put the work in when I'm at home and enjoy the racing - Stevie

bigquotesI'm not one of these people who likes to get into their comfort zone and stick with it. I'm always trying to change things up, do new things, do something different, you know even if something's working for me I'll mix it up just to see. I think it's easy to slip into that comfort zone and get stuck in a rut so I always make sure I'm changing things. Whether it's the training, approach to races or even approach to the season and this year's definitely working out I think - Gee

Lost of roost here in Andorra. The track is freshly built and with a day free of rain things are starting to loam up a bit and getting fast. Stevie gives the dirt a taste test.. and so does my camera.

How are you handling, what most would consider, a huge amount of pressure for Sunday?

bigquotesThe only reason the pressure is on my mind is because everybody's saying so, but other than that it's good, I'm not too worried. In the end I could not even race this weekend and still have my best ever overall finish. Obviously I wouldn't be satisfied at that, but it can only be positive from here on so I'm definitely looking forward to Sunday and not overly concerned - Stevie

bigquotesJust like I always do. Every race there's pressure on you to do well, but that's what we do, that's what we love...racing. Performing under that pressure. I relish it for sure, I love racing with that on my back and Sunday's no different to any other world cup for me. When I race without the need to do well I can't perform and that shows at smaller races when I can struggle to motivate myself and step up to the mark. When it's a bigger, more important race for me it definitely changes the way I ride...I just make sure I'm on key you know - Gee

Getting in the zone with Gee

Are you thinking about your ‘opponent’ and if so will there be a point where you shut him out?

bigquotesThis is the same race as any to me, the only difference is that because it's at the end, everyone puts all the stress on it. When it comes down to it I just have to ride great like it was the first race of the year. If you think about the other racers and the guy you gotta beat you're in the wrong head-space. I'm just going to perform as well as I can here and hopefully that's good enough - Stevie

bigquotesNo - Gee

Stevie almost

In your race run will you ride at your absolute limit?

bigquotesIt's hard to say. I can get last place and still finish 2nd in the overall, but in the end I don't necessarily want to have an average run. If you put 100% in there's a good chance you're gonna crash, so you have to find that fine line - Stevie

bigquotesI'll be on it. Same as ever, you can't race a world cup these days unless you're charging 100%. I wouldn't want to go into any world cup at half-mast - Gee

Conditions were drastically different from qualies. Come race time Gee crashed twice and just couldn t put down the run he needed for the win.

When the beeps start what will be in your head?

bigquotesThat's a hard one to describe because I find I definitely think a lot before the race. When it comes to it and you've prepared properly beforehand, it's all going to come together in the race, and that always seems to happen for me. I have things going through my head in the start gate, but then once I take my first pedal stroke all that stuff's gone and it's just charge and focus - Stevie

bigquotes'Time to bloody go'... You're racing your bike down technical, steep, muddy roots with all the trees, rocks and jumps... A split second of absent mindedness is gonna put you in hospital. You've gotta be totally focused and on top of it. It's not an easy thing what we do... you learn how to deal with it. You learn how to race well. And I like to think I've got it dialed now - Gee

Ever since I saw Seasons for the first time, Smith's phrase "It'd be cool to have a guy from Canada at the top with Sam Hill and Steve Peat" has resonated in my head like nothing else.

This Sunday, five years later, he will have the chance to make that dream a reality. He's put in the hard work and it's just a matter of time before he becomes the new WC champion!

Come on Stevie! I know I, and thousands of other people around the world, are pulling for you - the most BADASS yet HUMBLE WC racer on the circuit!!!

Gotta say even though Gee is a good guy, I'm pullin for Stevie. Anyone who has seen seasons has to! I mean I really want them to put Stevie's mom on the podium and put a medal around her neck. For everyone who has had a mom who really deserved the award (My mom was the hero in my ski racing career), Gooooooooooo Steeeeeeeeeeevie!!!!!!! (and mom!)

Couldn't agree with gotshovel more. Gee sounds like he is a little to intense and over the top. Plus he kinda seems like a dick in most videos I've seen.

you are right lmbngtracer7975 the same feeling for me ever I saw him on the screen! Smile So excited about this race I hope Stevie can manage to win!

Have to agree and I'm English. I'd much rather hang with Stevie, seems like a really down to earth guy. I hate to be negative about Gee as I admire his commitment but his interviews come across as so corporate and he's so dull.

Gee may be angry and over the top, however hes still going to win tomorrow....

Dammit but i'd like them both to win.. They both rip!

Stevie's part in "Seasons" was so sick but then there was their part in "follow me"...

I know everyone who's never met Gee and see's his race interviews and some of the photo's may get the wrong impression. When you see him riding for fun he's a totally different bloke; he came and rode with our team for no other reason than I sent him an email saying it would put a massive smile on the lads faces. He rode with us all day and was a quality bloke, also the fastest thing I've ever seen on a bike! Race day; he's an athlete, at the pinnacle of the sport and wants only one thing-to win. You can't put the man down for that. Being so competitive is what has made him world number one.

However, much like the poster at the top, since I first saw Stevie Smiths segment in Seasons (the film that got me back into riding after 10 years off the bike) I've wanted him to do well and watched him come up through the ranks.

I'm excited to watch either way, there's NOTHING better than a season final like this! Sick Mick for the win by the way, that would be the perfect Sunday Smile

Spot on ^^. By the time I'd scrolled down and read through the questions and taken in the pics I'm all choked up n shit. I want Stevie to win this, for himself and all the effort he's put in but also for his Mum and all the time she spent racing him down the shuttle road. Tear it apart Stevie!!!!!!!!
  • 34 4
Gee all day every day! Come on big man!
  • 36 15
"Are you thinking about your ‘opponent’ and if so will there be a point where you shut him out?"

"No" - Gee

...I think most of us can agree on that little "No." meaning a whopping huge "Yes.".

Steve Smith for Prime Minister!
  • 16 0
I'd have to agree with Gee on this one. Every competitor is different, but I know I personally do better when I shut out everyone and focus on myself and my run/event/whatever.
  • 8 1
Bowen has a point, I don't think Gee was being a dick by that statement or trying to come off like a hard ass. You can't think about your head competitor until you're done racing. I'm routing for Stevie but I'm dying to see them both put in an incredible run that we can all remember. It could be a throw back to Vouilloz/Barel tension. I'm dying to see it. Good luck to all the riders. Do it up guys!!!
  • 5 0
It's true, while its made out as a matchup, it's really not a head to head sport. It's simply everyone against the course/clock. Much like a sport like golf. Your not actually playing against the rest of the field. Each player is playing the course.
  • 6 1
What is this 'golf' you speak of? And what type of bike do you ride in it??
  • 1 0
Golf isn't so bad. I've been playing a long time and once you get past that initial really terribly frustrating period when your first learning its a fun game.
  • 1 0
I think Gee's "No" shows his mental toughness and maturity as a racer. No equivocating long-winding answer. Short, focused, to the point and powerful. Neither are my favorite riders, and I'd love to see both do well, but for some reason I'm erring to Gee. Go get em!
  • 1 1
Of course he's not thinking about his opponent, its not that kind of sport. Its him against the clock same as everyone else. He has no influence at all what his opponent is going to do. That's why he won't be thinking about Stevie. If he rides his best and loses then that's all he can do,if he makes mistakes he'll blame himself. They're all racing the clock and the course, not any other rider. I do sometimes think most people on this site don't race, have never raced or even remotely understand the sport they're talking about. The fastest on the day will win as always, nobody can affect another riders run. They're racing the clock, end of!
  • 21 0
you never know who's gonna win until tomorrow.gee or stevie? but i want steve PEAT with them in podium.
  • 15 0
Past two years, with gwin dominating, i was for gee since he was always at the shadows of minaar.....now that he can dominate there is no better opponent than stevie. In my book, both of them deserves the spot. This is one WC that will always be remembered.
  • 13 0
Everyone in the UK is sleeping. Gees fans will be here soon enough. It's going to be a great race whoever wins.
  • 12 1
All the best to both athletes this weekend, both deserve the win. I don't think either will win the race, but my bet is on gee to bring home the overall World Cup title as well as his little sis. Come on the Brits!
  • 15 3
 Gee Atherton FTW!
  • 9 1
If Gee doesn't win....based on that profile pix he should at least get to be the next Irin Man movie. I like em both for different reasons and am cheering for both!
  • 13 2
 Gee all the way
  • 7 1
You cant judge a book by its cover! Gee is a tidy chap, he may come across as a moody mother, but at the end of the day , you train all year, you put 100% in to every thing you do, in the sport of choice, you eat sleep and breath it and when it don't go to plan you will get a bit pi...ed of. Some sportsmen's P.R. skill are not all that great , but it doesn't make them a d..k head, Andy Murray one hell of a nice guy not great on P.R. . Gee once punched me in the face with a good long straight right hand , if he'd been a real moody boy , he'd have followed up with a left huck, but no, he backed up. So he aint that bad.
Any way back to the racing, who ever wins , its going to be great for the sport we all love, to have and ending like this is set up to be. Good luck to all taking part.
Gee for me but we wont stress if Stevie gets it done, . Remember if your loosing ,( dont get mad, get evan,) settle down and see where you can improve , we never stop learning, not matter what level your at.
  • 1 1
Why did he punch you, just out of curiosity?
  • 2 0
he came to our Boxing gym with Jason (fester) Davies who used to box with us. Gee fancied a bit of a go, so after an hour of warm up and a few rounds on the pads He had a couple of rounds sparring with me,

Go Gee, I've been with Gee for two years now, I hope to see him win this one. Please god save the king of downhill
  • 10 4
Gee thinks he has this Dialled, Stevie has got it on speed Dial. Two very different personalities, we all love Stevie........
  • 4 0
Such a toss up. Smith has had the momentum. except for the false start at worlds. Gee had such a dominating start to the season. The track doesn't stand out as obviously suiting one over the other. Either way, its going to be awesome. Can't wait.
  • 5 1
I so can't wait for sunday!!! The seasons and follow me segment with gee and steve make me want to see this showdown. Gee doesn't seem like a bad guy and he has worked hard to be on top. But I'm pulling for Stevie!!
  • 4 1
The Follow Me segment is hands down my favorite part of any MTB film. And to think that both of those dudes are facing off for the overall championship this weekend is wicked awesome!

Go Stevie!!! Canadian Chainsaw Massacre (and his super cool mom!) FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After watching several episodes of the Atherton Project. I really appreciate Gee's work ethic. He puts in Soooo much on /off bike training it's impressive. If anybody deserves a Championship it's Gee and Rach!! When you've given up on so many other things to FOCUS and MASTER one thing you should get the rewards of such an endeavor. Go Gee.

AND STEEEEEEVIE IS THE WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SRAM smashed Shimano, rockshox trumped fox, Devinci destroyed GT, Canada creamed UK, and it is now quite apparent that a moustache is more aerodynamically efficient than a beard! Woot!

Just watched the Norway race again and was disturbed to see Stevie punch the air when Gee slammed into a tree - nice! At least make sure he is ok first. Nobody wants to see a rider go down - too many injuries in this great sport already. He's young so we can forgive the indiscretion but Devinci please have a word with your boy about professionalism. He is a great rider, exciting to watch and will win the series at some point but please remember he is now a role model. Happy if Gee gets the overall championship but would be good if one of the younger riders took the win tomorrow. Good luck to all and ride safe ......can't wait!!
  • 1 1
I punched the air when gee hit the tree....I think quite a lot of other people did too.
  • 1 0
I punched the air too with "oh fuxx damn it" but no "yes!'. It's not so good to cheer on someone's mistake but you can't really blame stevie for that, he just want the victory too bad.
  • 2 0
i did to i could tell he was alright right away
  • 3 0
I seem to recall Steve wincing, right before his small celebration. It was pretty clear when Gee immediately continued riding that he was more or less fine. Hard to know how the shot syncs up, but I think he saw him ride off before claiming victory.
  • 2 0
It looked like he didn't know what to do. Hard to know the timing of it all but it looked like he got excited seeing Gee miss his line, then winced when he hit the tree and kind of looked around and took a seat awkwardly. Probably was stoked to see the mistake that meant he had it and then felt bad once he realized it had led to a crash. Pure speculation, but he seems very sportsmanlike and I highly doubt he was celebrating Gee's tree hug.
  • 1 0
It was obvious that Gee was not injured because it happened at such slow speed and Gee got up immediately. Stevie's momentary excitement was ok and in the character of a good sportsman. Not even Gee would have give it a second thought. When you're competing and the opponent makes a mistake to give you the win, celebration is justified and expected. Ironically, it is the unfounded criticism that is poor sportsmanship. Both of these athletes have behaved honestly and respectfully while at the same time showing passion and appreciation for the race and it's fans. Hate mongering, not a celebratory fist pump, is poor sportsmanship, .
