Finals Photo Epic: Mont-Sainte-Anne DH World Cup 2022

Some races last longer in the memory banks than others. Some go into the hall of fame. Beyond that, a fractional percentage make it all the way to legend status. This was one such time, when the MTB history books will print the date and winner in bold letters for ready reference many years from now. Not since the late, great Stevie Smith obliterated the field as last man down the hill back in 2013, have we seen a victory like this on home soil from a Canadian and indeed Smith was the last Canuk to take a win, Finn Iles having never graced the top step as an elite level racer before. How Iles mustered the mental fortitude to withstand the pressure in front of a roaring sea of fans and lay down a run so brilliant, maybe only Smith would understand, but Iles did it also with a displaced chain and smashed chainring for the final split.

Many other riders fell victim to classic 'Sainte Anne course brutality over the course of the week; huge crashes, wheel explosions and simple flats were a strong theme with drying track conditions turning the speed and commitment levels all the way up. Amaury Pierron, for example, needed only a 24th place or better to take the overall, but somehow slipped a couple of spots shy with a crash, while Myriam Nicole blew her tyre in the women's race, losing valuable points to the injured and absent Camille Balanche. Meanwhile, Vali Höll kept it upright with a fantastic run, and Nina Hoffman could only come 3 seconds shy of her time. Jackson Goldstone wrapped up the junior mens overall with a decisive home soil win, while Phoebe Gale rose to the top in junior women. One round now remains, in Italian Alps, but we must first go to France in search of gold. Some finale to the 2022 season this will be.

What a race. I was on the edge of the seat the whole time, seeing in disbelief that no rider was able to beat Greenland's time. But then came Iles, and what a run that was, clearly one for the history books, and one of the very few where I had to shed a tear. Congratulations, young man.

He even managed to apologise in his interview. A true Canadian

Great race and emotional result. Gotta feel for Laurie though, monster run and dominated the field until the very last moment.

Great race indeed. So stoked to see Finn on top

I feel like Jackson’s amazing performance wasn’t highlighted enough. 3rd in Men!?!

Most fast consistent guys are racing with their hearts... That's what makes them so special and gives them extra safety/protection...

@PauRexs: Ah so true. Finn's run was all heart for sure. Stevie was with him

That tree hug by Minnaar looked terrifying, hope he's okay.

Hope so. At least he now has both a gap and a tree named after him in MSA.

Was anyone chopping onions during Finn's interview?
  • 18 0
After the broadcast showed Finn was green on the first two splits I started shouting myself hoarse while standing on the couch all the way until the end of Finn's run. MSA always seems to deliver a special race, this one more so than most.
  • 3 0
I don't think there was a downhill fan left sitting after the first splits showed green.

Was in the hospital with my dad who was sleeping and I woke him up from jumping up and yelling. What a way to win Finn.

We all just followed Finn down the hill to the podium screaming and shouting his name… was bloody awesome

So happy to have witnessed history being made, again. Thanks red bull!!!

Couldn't a tire insert have saved Myriam's run or at least limit the damage? Tough season for her.
  • 7 0
Someone at Commencal needs to secretly add 3 PSI to everyone's rear tire the night before the race. It's ridiculous how many blowouts that team has had the last 2 years.

FInn has been about to break out all season. Always qualifying fast and not able to hold it together for races mixed with bad luck. His win here couldn't have happened at a better time plus a culmination of so many factors and emotion. Cant wait to see his confidence chase the overall title and world champs!

So, the photographers insisted Vali pose holding her bike over her head after an ezhausting run and it didn't make the cut. I.love the photographers, but can you please lighten up on her a bit.

"Anna Newkirk jumping into seventh, one of her best results to date."

Probably because it was her best result (so far) in the Elites.

She reminds me of how Andreas Kolb was a few years back; he started off quietly and then became massive - it probably won't be long until she does the same.

Some nasty staches out there to counterbalance the insane riding.

Another memorable DH race !!! Sooo good!!

not even a chain-ring could stop the chain-saw that appeared once more on the podium

The red rimstrip in Nicole's wheel makes it look like the wheel itself is bleeding. Somewhat appropriate for the moment.

I don't get one thing: 5 years ago, when Gwin won in the pouring rain, I had to wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning to watch the race live. Now it was in the evening here in Central Europe, as it should be, as Mont Saint Anne is 6 hours behind. So why was the race in 2017 at 6 o'clock in the morning?! What am I missing? If it's stupid, be kind! Peace!
  • 10 0
Only explanation I have for you is that you have bad memory and you were either travelling in a different time zone or you did not really wake up at 5.

I go to MSA races every year and can confirm that racing never happened at night :p

Bodhi Kuhn... on the podium - won't be the last time. Canada is strong. Sorry, not sorry Smile

I wonder if a chain guide would have prevented that chain from falling off
  • 7 0
A second chain guide was needed.
  • 7 1
Not sure if it's sarcasm but there was an e13 guide on his bike.
  • 1 0
@larrythelamb: There was only a top guide, if he had a lower jockey wheel on the guide I think he would have been ok. I would always run a full guide on a DH bike, the extra drag isn't much of an issue.
  • 1 2
A Shimano derailleur would have. Sram has garbage clutch tension.
  • 1 0
@larrythelamb: Exactly. Some proper chain guide would be better for the job.
  • 1 1
Benting the lower guide will probably block the cranckset or drop the chain.

Since narrow/wide chainring, the lower guide is kind of useless
  • 5 0
He broke the chainring when he smashed it on a rock - causing the chain to come off.
  • 3 0
so many EX471's "old" tech still being run, if it aint broke dont fix it!
