Today was quite the shoot-out here in the wild and wonderful 'West of the East'. With the Junior overall titles playing out in a somewhat predictable fashion, the battle for the Elite Women's overall winner went down to the wire and the Elite Men's was nothing short of a barn-burner. Sometimes the season arrives at the last round with a pre-determined winner, other times it can be a relatively casual cruise down through the finish arch to collect the UCI crystal... But not this time. The decider could not have been scripted with any more drama.

It's fair to say the final round of the DH World Cup was met with high expectations, with both a new venue and a new track, both of which delivered with a vengeance deep in the forest of West Virginia. Beautiful sunny skies had dried the track completely over the previous days and by the time racers took to the track looking for glory, conditions could not have been more ideal. Gone was much of the slick mud in the rock gardens and racers were really able to push the limits of both the track and their own comfort zones, the perfect combination for super tight times and nail-biting racing to the end.

The Junior Men and Women took to the track first and it was Vali Holl who once again took the top step of the podium ahead of Anna Newkirk and Mille Johnset. With only one other Junior woman racing and these top three jumping up to Elite next year it really does make us question what the next generation will look like coming in behind them. The Junior Men's race was dealt a blow when newly crowned world champ and top qualifier, Kye A'hern, crashed in training right before the race and was forced out with what looks like a broken wrist. That would open the door for the series leader, Thibaut Daprela, and the host of fresh faces from yesterday's qualifier to challenge for the win. American Matthew Sterling would come close, but would just miss out on the podium by a single second. Third would go to Lucas Cruz just behind Luke Meier-Smith while Daprela would dominate to take the win by 6 seconds and in the process end his junior career with his second consecutive World Cup title.

The women's race kept everyone on the edge of their seats right until the very end. Myriam Nicole would set the pace and looked good for the win until Marine Cabirou took to the track. Up at every split, Marine laid it all on the line to do what she had to to to take the series title. She would set the fastest time with just her rival Tracey Hannah on track. Tracey started fast but would fade split after split, and while she only needed a top 6 to secure the lead, even that was looking to be a struggle. For the last minute of the race, the tension rose in the finish area as no one was certain which of the two would take the overall title. In the end, Marine would take her third WC win in a row, while Tracey would do just enough to take the World Cup title by the slimmest of margins.

Not to be outdone, Amaury Pierron did all he could do in his run and held down the hotseat until the final rider on track. In the meantime, American, Charlie Harrison, laid down the run of his life to land 3rd to the delight of the home crowd. Loic Bruni arrived shortly after, a little off the pace and into a dubious third with one rider to go. The tension was heavy with Amaury in the hotseat, as Loic could not afford to drop another place. With Danny Hart in the gate that was not a comfortable spot to be in. The unbelievable twist to the tale was that if Danny was to win and beat Amaury, Amaury's points would be insufficient to best Loic and the title would go back to the World Champ. When Danny Hart's splits flirted dangerously close to Pierron's it was obvious that the fate of the title lay in the balance and would likely be decided by just fractions of a second.

It wasn't until the final splits that Danny's time moved into the green, and upon crossing the line in first the heart-ache would set in for Pierron, while just a meter away, Loic was overwhelmed with joy. Never in Loic's life would he ever be so happy to see another rider stand at the top of the podium as he was today for Danny Hart. What a race and what a season. Title chases don't get much closer than that.

Bravo Vali, Thibaut, Tracey, and Loic. You've all put on an incredible show and we are already looking forward to 2020.

These finals are up there with 2013 Leogang when Stevie Smith was top qualifier and had to beat Gee to win the overall. Hard to say which was more dramatic... Stevie was last man down and had to beat Gee to win and did it, whereas this year it was Hart deciding it for Pierron and Loic... both are epic!! 2019 was such a good season.

2013 Stevie run:

Was it 2010 when it was incredibly close between Greg Minnaar and Gee Atherton? Whoever won the finals in Windham took the overall. Both Greg and Gee had perfect runs (and it was almost Peaty who took the win until he crashed out). Greg was last man down the hill and it was really close. Gee eventually won (and took the title) but it was another first at a US venue (Windham) and was incredibly exciting.

Of course the plot to this 2019 beats them all. Danny takes second, Amaury wins. Danny took first, so Loic won. So horribly exciting!

@vinay: these were all classics! It’s not as much fun when the title is decided before the last round, or if one of the contenders crashes or whatever.

As for this round specifically, it was an excellent track and great racing. Hopefully it doesn’t disappear any time soon. Having two American rounds next year on consecutive weekends would be sweet. Windham to make a return perhaps? For the teams to do MSA, Snowshoe and Windham across a two and a half week North American trip would surely be achievable in terms of finances. It would add a lot of value to the series for not a lot of extra outlay.
Nine rounds next year?

ive watched all world cups broadcast since about 2008, and I cant think of a race that was as excellent as this - others were equally close in terms of the overall, but never the last rider down deciding the fates of two others, and in such a close fashion. And Hart beating that run of Pierrons is incredible - I think he went 9s faster than his qualifying run. He must have put it all out there. Im still pumped. And massive congrats to Tracey too - managed to hold down the nerves for half a season and win the overall - well deserved and now you can relax!

Up there with the best of them finals wise. Minnaar vs Vouillouz 2001 MSA, Rennie Vs Gracia 2003 Kaprun, 2010 Gee v Minnaar Windham, 2013 Gee vs Stevie Leogang. Amazing memories and outstanding rides. Amazing that Minnaar still on the box , 18 years since his first win. Danny’s ride near other-worldly through the rocks. So calm and composed.

Snowshoe awesome as ever.

The plot twists for next year have massive potential. Can’t wait.

There should be more races in the USA. What a great track, amazing crowd and great end of the season. Never liked Windham that much, but I am sure there are other venues in the States with a proper DHtrack. MSA used to be my favorite track of the year. But now I am in love with Snowshoe. Has it all

I'm a big Hart fan, but as he was about to drop in I really didn't want his result to mess with the overall unless he won the race - just didn't seem right somehow. I can't tell you how loud I shouted at the TV when he was in the green over the line, holy shit!

That was the best weekend ever, completely blown away on how amazing it is to be at a world cup in person especially somewhere I ride a few times a year. All the racers were even cooler than I expected, chugged a beer with ed masters in the pits, bought Laurie Greenland a rum and coke because they wouldnt accept his foreign ID to bar hopping with all the racers Saturday and sticking tooth picks in peoples foreheads with Greg Minnaar it was just insane. Hope Snowshoe gets another one soon!

I've only just fully understood how close we were to a different outcome. Amaury was champion til Danny's 4th split? Is that right?
  • 1 0
@BenPea: Amaury did everything he could by getting into first and Loic then did what he needed to secure. Amaury needed Danny to slot in between them both and that’s what it looked like was happening so yeah, the title got handed to Loic right at the end. Bonkers.

Maybe they partied with the locals too much thr night before. They can be persuasive

 @bizutch: village bad ????

@BigballmcCall: I thought the same. Some of them have Hardline next weekend too. When you think of the travel required and what they’re doing it’s amazing they are able to keep going.

so almost all Maxxis riders chose the DHR as their front tire?! strange.
  • 3 0
Not so strange, fairly standard set up for many teams & riders. Yes I realise ‘R’ denotes rear but it just seems to work so well on the front too.

Probably due to more braking grip on the rock garden

The DHR II has been used as a front tire with regularity on the circuit for over 3 years. The Assegai is also popular since last year. Great tires

The DHR is a minion side knob with a high roller style centre. The braking traction is much better than a DHF but you retain a similar cornering feel. The grippier centre section makes the DHR more of an all-round tyre. The DHF suffers from locking up too easily in the wet.

@FCX250: nailed it. Plus it rained a bit overnight for the first few days so it could have been for any damp patches elsewhere.

Yeah I'm shocked Gee didn't make World Champs. 31st yesterday, no top tens this year. Seemed like a lock for it.

Wow, that is a niche trolling obsession you've got going there. Did he turn down your advances once?

@BenPea: noticed that, too, maybe he was the guy getting overtaken by Gee at the Foxhunt (where he nearly jumps over the guys)

@likehell: or maybe I'm just rational
