From the Ashes: Finals - Vallnord DH World Cup 2016

by Nathan Hughes

Four days straight under blazing Andorran sun, sucking in the orange dust through helmet vents and it all came crashing down in apocalyptic fashion for the last men up the mountain.

Gone was the moon dust, bone-dry wood and rock, replaced by ever-thickening, speed-sapping sludge and treacherous features in between. Yesterday's top performers suddenly became victims of their own success, as the clouds rolled in and thunder crackled hard overhead with perfect ill timing. No doubt, the last few riders were worst affected by the fierce rain and it was obvious, from the state of the bikes, who had the rug pulled out from under them the hardest. Today there would be no heroic miracle runs in the mud, just sketchy crashes or damage limitation... and in the case of Aaron Gwin, an increasingly nervous cruise down to the finish arena to seal the series overall. Never one to 'not go all-out', Danny Hart produced the goods as expected and, with the weather gods more siding with him, he was able to put down a run not far off the maximum he was capable of... Victory number three, the hat-trick was his, just moments before things out on track became totally unmanageable.

Meanwhile in the Juniors, Gaetan Vige bested Finn Iles by over three seconds in a brilliant display of bike control on the steeps and Rachel Atherton chalked up the perfect season, despite keen advances on the podium by Myriam Nicole and Tracey Hannah. Seven wins from seven and a total of 13 consecutive triumphs, it seems there is no end to her drive to destroy the field, time and time again.

That's it, that's all for another year. The 2016 World Cup season is all played out...we hope you enjoyed the show once again. Until next time.

Magnus Manson may have had his fair share of troubles over the season, but two 4th place finishes comes as an amazing conclusion for the Canadian.

bigquotesI rode this track before at the Cup Catalan in March and I know it pretty well, but it's so good to win here because all the people from Commencal and Vallnord are here so I'm really happy. I was in the gate and thought "let's do this!" and let off the brakes pretty good. I was so close to Finn for the overall, like 50 points, but I'm happy anyway and congrats to Finn because he's a f*ing nice guy and he's very fast haha! - Gaetan Vige - Commencal Riding Addiction

Finn Iles admits to a few race run mistakes but was fast enough to take second and the overall.
Iles looked exceptional on course all week, but didn't manage to hold it quite so wide open as his French rival.

Finn Iles 20 meters away from becoming the Junior World Cup Champion. It s hard to believe he still has another year to go before jumping to elites.

Finn was stressing hard today knowing that the title was essentially his to lose. Not his best run but good enough for second on the day and the overall title.

:: WOMEN'S FINAL ::

It was a tough one today for Rachel Atherton.
Back problems, mysterious viruses or injured shoulders...there's simply nothing that is able to keep this lady from the top step. Rachel - 13, World - 0.

bigquotesI can't even remember what happened, I'm too excited from the men's race! The back was alright actually; way better today...I just had mad pain killers and my little brace thing on. It was mainly my arm pump, but I think everyone was in the same boat there. I was pretty sure that I wouldn't win and was like 'oh, f-k it, I don't care' and then after qualifying was so close, I knew that if I tried a bit harder. It was a good run, I think I learned a lot about my bike handling skills just because it's so steep. Normally I'm just bouncing off stuff and you can't really ride like that here. You have to really stick to the floor, so I tried to push. It's funny - all weekend I've been making changes to my suspension, then after qualifying I was like 'f-k, it's not working' and went the complete opposite way and did it all differently. Glad about that! - Rachel Atherton - Trek Factory Racing

Gwinner
'Finish in the top 80' might have sounded like a minor hurdle to secure the championship at the beginning of the day, but around this point Gwin was doing all he could just to stay between the tape as the greasy conditions took hold.

bigquotesI was warming up underneath the easy-up and I had my music in, so I couldn't hear the rain. But I took my headphones off and I was like 'Oh yeah, it's coming down...' but then, I've been in that position before. I wasn't too sure what to do with myself after my rubbish qualifying time, but I changed some lines like I do every weekend. Obviously I didn't have it as bad as the last guys, but it was wet... I put roll-offs on, but didn't use them in the end. Straight out of the start into the first jump, my wheels were all over and the bridges were lethal. I was just crawling over the bridges and was just like 'this is how it is'. I've done three and now we're going to Val di Sole next weekend.  Awesome coverage all season. Thanks, Pinkbike. To me, DH racing is the most exciting thing in mountain biking right now. We need way more of this and way less soul-sucking focus on products. Dear UCI: the short season is a travesty. More races. Or better yet, lets abandon the UCI and start a DH World Series.

ratty always wanted to be a shrimp boat captain. he's been hinting at the change during interviews by saying "matie" instead of "mate".
  • 16 0
Is there any reason to actually think he might be quitting or is it all just random speculation? Warner was talking about peaty retiring being an influencing factor but I sort of feel like peaty wouldn't actually let ratboy quit even if he tried.
  • 5 3
Not sure how he feels with Luca Shaw joining the squad.
  • 3 0
@el-nombre: Some changes are coming. On Vital there was a comment alongside the new bike of Steve Peat that there will be some big news for the Syndicate regarding the new season. Luca probably is onboard, but whether someone is leaving... :/ Also, Troy does not have a team for 2017.

RATBOY is more a freerider than a racer !! look at him !! as long as he's doing what he loves you just have to let him live his life
  • 13 0
If he did leave, and I hope he doesn't, Brayton on the Syndicate would be pretty damn sweet. Just sayin'.
  • 6 1
I think Ratboy took this season to celebrate with Peaty. He'll be back on it next year as his focus will no longer be on the retirement of his best mate, and back on racing.
  • 12 14
@freerideglory: Ratty has been saying in many interview on many occasions he had been offered more money by other teams but he wanted to stay and keep the Syndicate team the same. I highly doubt he'll stay in Syndicate now. Plus, let's be honest, his results have sucked. Roskopp won't be happy. I doubt he has a seat anyway...

But Pratt man. A legend that hung around too long and faded away out. So sad. I don't get it. Why on his last season didn't he race all the rounds? He's just dissapeared without trace. No coverage even by Red bull of his run or anything at the finish area is a real shame. Watched him since he was riding the rigid Kona, loved when he was racing or GT and the Iconic Lobo. But I think he should of bowed out sooner. I dunno, I get it, you do something so long it's all you know and to don't want it too end. Just think it's sad that such a legend disappeared so quietly.

I'd love to see Rachel Atherton take a year off or more after world champs and see her compete is something like the EWS. Shes has won every title, beat every record and seems to be just on another level compared to the other female racers in DH so why not take that and go try and steal some wins at the EWS. Personally I'd love being the king of the hill by a huge margin for an entire season but I'd rather the competition be tight and force me to really put it on the line every once in a while, its why racing is so fun! Just imagine an EWS season with Rachel added to the mix, would be fun!
  • 47 2
Love to see her try for the double...EWS and DH in a single season...she is that good.
  • 15 1

@mtbakerpow: Jill hasn't ever got within 5-6 seconds of Rachel at WC level. No disrespect to Jill but Rachel is on another level. www.rootsandrain.com/compare.html?i=747x6133
  • 15 0
@mtbakerpow: Ragot was able to match her, but she's retired from WC racing now
  • 5 2
She would just go and destroy the enduro competition even harder than she does with those girls on the WC circuit.
Some of the girls on the EWS are rather fit, i give you that, but there is literally no competition to even be worth naming in one sentence with Rachel on the EWS in regards to riding skill and speed.
Rachel is seriously fit, tough and has great bike handling skills.
There is no woman on the enduro scene to match her. It´d be outright domination and even more boring.
It would probably be euqally laughable as me trying to race against the likes of Hill, Gwin or Minnaar.

Now, if she was to try and aquire both titles at the same time, that´s something i´d like to see!

@Aled-DHI: i think ratboy is going to surprise everybody in worldchampz!!! Peaty said a few years back about ratty that he better get him (peaty) a world champ title before he retires...

I also seriously hope he stays in WC Racing. They can use some characters like him! Big Grin

Where are these rumours coming from about ratboy? It's quite obvious he's less committed this year, especially compared to a few years ago when he wanted to be the best. Don't go josh!

^^^ this. Rob and Claudio's comments made me nervous. Now this article pleading Josh not to go. What is going on?

Damn it Ratboy! I went out and bought a Santa Cruz V10 just so I could learn to speak like you! After lovin' all the awesome Team Syndicate videos and hearing the "I just do what I do" in the intro.... I'm really gonna miss you being on Santa Cruz brah! DON'T LEAVE EM!

@Kapricorn: Just curious, I love how 2 people neg prop me for asking a simple question especially because I have only been following the sport for 3 or so years.
  • 2 0
@brandaneisma: I think people are so used to seeing sarcastic comments and rhetorical questions more than actual questions on this site that they just assume the former. Good question though as I (and likely several others) did not know that.

In his last race, Peaty comes in ahead of the following: Bryceland, Sic Mick, The bulldog, Rachel Atherton's Brother, Gutierez, Ed Masters, Needles, and Arron Gwin. Priceless.

Conditions definitely worsened after Hart's run, but he didn’t have it easy. Laid down an insane run in the wet! Pure talent.
  • 5 4
He's Danny Hart, King of slaying tracks in shitty conditions, probably would have picked up a few seconds if he raced later. Stoked to see home bringing it as hard as he has been this season, fun rider to watch and yet another podium threat at all times.

Yeah the difference in track conditions really didn't set in until the last 4 or 5 guys. With 3 minute gaps between riders a ton can change between just one or two runs. The biggest issue here was once the rain saturated the trees over head the rain began to get into the woods, and with the massive amounts of dust a few inches deep everywhere on track it quickly turned things to paste and slime (think pouring water into a bowl of flour). Definitely not knocking Danny's run but he was for sure the last guy to come down before it turned into a shit show. Especially up top where it all of a sudden it poured rain for the top 4 guys. Even if it wasn't super slippery in just rolled super slow and sucked tons of momentum which you can see form the last few guys top splits where things were not so steep.

This was an insane race! Adam Brayton shows awesome style, as always!

Good job Elliott J., Luca S. Charlie H. and of course to Gwin!!! Good to see American riders with good results. Give the Brits and Frenchies more competition. Great season!!

This was the first race that I'd managed to watch all the coverage for - great racing!
Pity there was no coverage of Peaty's final run.

A noobie question though - What's the 'protected' rider status?
  • 3 1
Protected riders can race finals regardless of qualifying result based on their top 20 WC rank as of race time.

 @StFred: thanks for the reply.
