IN MEMORIAM: Zarja Černilogar

With deep regret and great sympathy to all her many friends and family we must say a premature farewell to Slovenian mountain biker, Zarja Černilogar, who tragically passed away over the weekend following a non-bike related accident. The 26 year old Slovenian national champion and Unior Tools Team rider showed great promise on her bike, claiming 7 victories at the IXS cup races and multiple top ten finished at the world cups, whilst simultaneously studying for her masters degree in microbiology. Due to a wrist injury she had unfortunately missed out on a big part of the 2016 season, but was due for a return at the World Champs on her favorite track; Val di Sole. Anyone who knew Zarja can attest to what a great person she was, famed for her positivity, love of life and amazing sense of humour. She will be sorely missed by us all. R.I.P. Zarja.

bigquotesThere are so many people out there who will tell you that you can't.

What you've got to do is turn around and say 'watch me'

@gizmo11: No shit! This has to be the most tragic year for mountain biking I can remember since I started riding 16 years ago. Not just the pros but we've lost local trail building legends as well. As I get older makes me wonder if I should tame the heartbeat down a bit.
  • 15 0
@m0dest: no way! Life is to be lived the way you live it. If you get what I mean. When mine stops it will be tame. Till then............
  • 7 0
P.s. they ( you know who) wouldn't want anybody to slow down.

@m0dest: I'm 46 and I reckon my chances of cancer or heart disease far outweigh the risk than doing the sports I Iove (mountain biking and skiing). Life is there to be lived - so I won't be slowing down.

@RussellTinka: No shit!! I beat cancer about 5 years ago and as a result I got myself in better shape than I have been in 10 years. I don't see myself slowing down much but I often think...damn it I wish I was shuttling today.

@Narro2: true death is inevitable but seriously be positive help remember all these people that we lost for their good qualities. Don't just blow it off and say 'everyones gonna die anyway' you may be next if you keep an attitude like that.

@DylanDaSilva: i get your point man. But i Dont think being positive or negative here is the thing. An MTB celebrity died. Yeah it is bad. But is such death sufficiently trascendental that it Will affect lives of people over the internet? Is it bad enough to call 2016 a shitty year? Of course not. It us not bad enough to ruin my day nor yours i can assure you that.
I was a Big Steve smith fan btw.
  • 9 1
@Narro2: I think you're missing the point. First of all, this an MTB website, so when someone from the MTB community passes away suddenly, we all grieve with them. No one can deny that there have been a considerable amount of deaths within our biking community this year. That is why we say what we do regarding 2016. Mourning is completely natural and if you were a Stevie Smith fan, then I'm sure you mourned his death as well, regardless of whether you consider it ruining your day or not. If it's not obvious to you from all of the comments on this post, people do care and you should show some respect for those lost as well as those in mourning. If you find yourself unable to sympathize, then do us all a favor and keep your mouth shut and your comments to yourself!

Ride in peace Zarja. Cycling sports lost some absolute heroes this year. She may not have been as famous as Stevie, but as a top rider (national champion) she deserves a similar tribute at the upcoming WC.

She fell 20-30 meters, in the area close to Mali grad in Kamnik .

No one cares these days.

It has been found that there is a missing person. Police officers continue investigation of the event, which takes place in the direction of establishing any suspicion of a criminal offence.

She went to a festival or concert, not sure what exactly, then disappeared. they found her near castle walls or something but no detailed info on why and how.
  • 15 0
Local reports say she was walking near the walls in an unmaintained and overgrown part of the castle, where it is hard to see the edge, and fell 20-30m.

@ad15: Where can I find news on this?
  • 1 0
@hdeboissard: mmm it's not the sort of thing that's publicly published. Two of the three here in the valley have hit the news as they were very well known, the third was a young British lad not well known so didn't make the big news. If you're really wanting to know where all the info on base and wingsuit fatalities are collated then drop me a pm and I'll send you the link. Double figures for August wingsuit fatalities globally, hence being known as the wsks..
  • 11 2
@ad15: With due respect to the deceased wingsuit flyers, most are courting death every time they fly. topgunbase.ws/wtf-are-we-really-doing
  • 2 1
@mbl77: i know people that say the same thing about DH mountain bikers.. for me, it's actually VERY calculated and precise esp some of the guys i know here, however, urbex.... now THAT is courting with death... have a look on red bull TV, it's completely insane,

perception is a funny thing eh, I'm totally comfortable with wingsuit flying, yet i think the urbex lot need committing to institutions...they really are nuts...
  • 2 1
Open wheel car racing is another sport that has been historically deadly during the sport like wing suit base jumping. Manchester United soccer club had a plane accident 1958. The Paul Bas injury is directly a result of our beloved MTB sport and I hope he gets back on his bike. Wingsuit flying should have a website that provides information on casualties and how they happen. So people can learn from past mistakes.
  • 2 0
@SithBike: they do have a website for precisely that reason
  • 1 0
@SithBike: Wingsuit flyers do have such a website, I can't remember the link though as it was a few years ago. The guy who told me about it also told me he lost something like 12 people in one year. Yet he was still jumping three times a day when he was home.
