Practice eh - Mont St Anne DH World Cup 5

MAKING IT RAIN

Life is like a box of chocolates and so is Mont Sainte Anne... You never know what you're gonna get. This morning started out slick, became bone-dry and then went fully South to finish with a lightning accompanied torrential downpour. Last year a massive storm moved in as Smith prepared for his winning descent to blur the vision of the other big names, but leaving him undeterred and at full-throttle. Today Danny Hart showed how comfortable he is at blistering MSA pace and set the standard with Hill, Brosnan and Minnaar all a tire nobble back, while Atherton and Smith may both be out of contention after hitting the deck. Of course tomorrow the riders will have to show their true colors and we'll get our best guess as to who can do the business and really make it rain when finals come around.

bigquotesThe track is really good especially the new top berms that they've made and the new rock gardens which are a little bit techy now with all the ruts cutting in. I do enjoy riding this track every year when I come back ey. The track is so wide open and different to all the other ones, I am just having fun on my bike and it is so good to be back racing World Cups. I had a podium here in 2011 when I got 3rd and in 2012 I got 6th, so I hope I can back those results up this weekend and maybe even go and do better - Brook MacDonald - Trek World Racing

Troy yawn
You know that feeling when leading the series is so easy it's boring? Nope, not many people do, not even Brosnan; just a yawn at the end of a long day.

bigquotesIt rained a bit at the start of practice and the track got some holes and ruts in it. Then it dried out which made it a lot rougher and a lot better... The World Cup tracks have been getting a bit freeway-ish so it's good to get some more bumps in this one! I am feeling really fit and strong for the second half on the season and I'm looking forward to see what we can do on this new bike. I have been out a bit on it before now, getting used to it, but this is the first real test we've put through it. It does feel a bit different but it's really fast and smooth so we'll see how we're gonna do tomorrow in qualifying. Right now in the first laps of practice, on one of the wildest tracks of the circuit, it's holding up really good. All in all I feel ready to try and get another win here, just have to wait and see what tomorrow holds when everyone starts to go really fast - Troy Brosnan - Specialized Factory Racing

heavyp are you the same heavyp on rotorburn? 100% agree it is really odd for them to not be on the new bike.

Manufacturing fuck up with factory in the larger size frames. The guys very very badly want to be on the new bike as they believe it to be faster. Anything else you hear is bullshit. ETA on new bikes is unknown, but unlikely for this season.

@kmayHD, I'm totally guessing here, but maybe Luca Shaw isn't sponsored by Specialized (as the main sponsor). Is he maybe on a team that uses Specialized? I've never looked a ton into the teams in UCI DH, so this is a total guess/theory.

The photo next to the one where Troy is with his bike is one of the best ever on PB. The colors, the forest, the mud, the rock and how fast and high he is jumping is just perfect.
  • 3 0
Ya he's on the TLD/SRAM team so I think they won't get them until they hit the public?
  • 1 0
@pm148, that's what I'm thinking. Maybe they'll get them before the public, but after the factory riders dial them in and get feedback to Specialized.
  • 1 0
Dang, I agree with that "The World Cup tracks have been getting a bit freeway-ish so it's good to get some more bumps in this one!" Troy you hit the nail on the head! I'm not a WC rider, by any means, but I am a builder, and what happened to the narrow/fast/tech/nasty trails? Keep the the tape in tight, make everyone take the same line....
  • 2 0
 same line?
Line choice is great to have, the wider trails are good, it shows variation and really increases the need for riders to pick great lines and test different lines. Having a single track dh race would be a bad move in my opinion. MSA has lots of wider track and you can take different lines, its just the riders will find the fastest line so you see many taking similar lines anyway. But removing the choice of different lines is a move backwards IMO.

The freeway of flat pedally tracks is bad, but having lots of line choice in rough steep difficult terrain is brilliant.

Err sprained, torn/stretched ligaments can be just as brutal of a recovery as bones though sometimes. Seems like there were a few hospital visits today, hopefully everyone keeps it rubber-side down tomorrow during qualies.
  • 6 0
Yea a badly sprained ankle is actually much worse than a simple broken bone most times. If it's a clean break it heals and you move on good as new. I sprained my ankle real bad a few years ago and it took 3-4 months before I was back to full activity, and even today it still doesn't feel completely 'right'.
  • 1 0
Yea I really wanted to see him put a hurtin' on the field. I'm going to be stoked to see Gwin, Bruni, Hill, or Bryceland take a win.
  • 2 0
Yeah I agree. I broke my ankle along with a torn ligament. The ligament is still an issue, bone is fine. Best of luck to him!
  • 1 0
A few years back I also tore a tendon in the back of my finger. When I went to the doctor he examined me and based on the fact that I my finger was curled and I could not straighten it, determined I popped a tendon. But he said there were two cases of what could have happened. One was that the tendon itself broke, the other was that the tendon itself stays intact, but the base of the tendon actually pulls a piece of the bone off where it attaches. When he took xrays he actually said the case of the tendon pulling the bone apart was preferable as it would take a few weeks for the piece of bone to heal, while the straight ripped tendon would mean 7-8 weeks with a splint on my finger. Of course, I was in a splint for 7 weeks. Point being the soft tissue injuries almost always take longer to heal.
  • 1 0
Yeah, if the ligament is torn bad, I don't see him racing anymore this season, with just over one month to go Frown

Actually it's not a clever idea at all. Only an idiot would say that BDKR
  • 4 1
Only an idiot would say what? Agree that Ratboy being casual is the way it should be? If the proper way to race and ride with your mates is dressed to the nines in a bunch of colorful and expensive kit with a prim and proper stick in your @ss, then I'll take a being an idiot all day long!

You may not like how little kit or padding they have on, but everyone makes their own personal decisions about what works for them. I used to think it crazy to not at least have elbow pads on, but after trying many different styles of elbows for numerous makers, I have to say I feel better, and therefore ride more relaxed, and therefore better.

Clever or not, I'm making my own decision fool!

  • 6 0
Whats the deal with the Lapierre guys are they ever going to get their new bikes?
  • 2 4
I don't know! It's just a theory but maybe the new bike was developed with mainly Ragot and only with notes from Bruni and Blenki. Then Bruni and Blenki must have tried the final frame the team and Ragot came up with and then prefered the old frame more. That's the only way it makes sense to me Smile
  • 2 3
YES - I agree this must me one of the biggest mysteries of all time (as far as bike go!).

I have heard 2 stories:

1. The larger frame sizes were delayed in manufacturing/shipping (unlikely)
2. the team riders were not happy with the bike (linkages and suspension curve) and they have asked for changes before production (likely)

It seems insane to launch a bike in such a way and have 1 rider ride it at the first race it was announced only to have the other riders still riding the old bike 3 rounds later .. hmmmm
  • 3 0
I've also been wondering about this. Seems strange for a big team to be on the old bikes.
  • 5 1
there is a glitch in the matrix
  • 1 0
The size issue was plausible originally but its been so long now since the release the sizing delay really seems less likely, I am definitely leaning to the boys not liking the new frame. Blinky has been using that electronic suspension tuning recently too, maybe its not just to tune for the race but maybe its for the development of the other frame.
  • 4 0
I think it's way more "unlikely" that Blenki and Bruni who had massive input in the frame all of the sudden don't wanna ride it.

Manufacture issues are way more likely, especially when they are both riding a Large.
  • 1 0
I would tend to think that the boys don't like it otherwise Lapierre would have communicated on the issue... I love this team anyway and hope Blenki and Bruni will do great. Bruni because he is French and Blenki because his riding style is insane!
  • 2 0
Wondering why Gwin's Demo has "S-Works" on the bottom of the down tube whilst Brosnan's bike has just "Specialized" on the bottom of the down tube?

Maybe Brosnan's frame is the cheaper carbon model as we have seen in previous carbon demo iterations?

Just my thoughts...
  • 2 1
 Same Frame...different colors.
  • 1 0
Yeah lol I have the 2013 Specialized Carbon Demo 8i, its the same Carbon design but heavier "Fact 10m" carbon as opposed to the S works model which used "Fact 11m" Carbon that is supposed to be lighted and stiffer. This is what I was saying with the new one, obviously its the same frame....just different carbon used?

ANOTHER flat for Gwin??? EEEFFFFF with all this carbon aerospace technology in that new Demo you think they could get him a setup that won't flat!!!
  • 4 3
Yes, because obviously it's the frame causing flats.
  • 4 0
No, as hamnchheez said they should have enough budget / professionalism to provide kit that will function as it is expected to.....having a decent DH tyre/wheel combo should be a fairly basic requirement for a pro team....
  • 2 0
You're right. Re-read @hamncheez's post, I read it wrong earlier. Thought he was blaming the frame, but he was saying they're upgrading technology like crazy on the frame, you'd think they could figure out a wheelset that doesn't flat a lot. My bad @hamncheez.
