Rainbow Stripes and Laser Beams: Finals - Cairns DH World Cup 2016

You call that a race? Mate, THIS was a race! And yet somehow it's already over. Sam Hill's in his pyjamas. He's been to the after-party and back; now he's all tucked up. It's true the 17,000km mission from the Pyrenees wrapped up seemingly no sooner than it began. Next stop? Well there's a while before that one. First, let's soak up all the Australian madness in one visual fell swoop.

In a more than shocking turn of events during cyclone season, the track was nearly completely dry. With the dirt in hero mode, maximum grip was on offer but only the brave few pushed hard enough to make the right kind of dent in the competition. The young Brit, Matt Walker, pulled the junior punches, Rachel Atherton stole the show just one more time in the women's and for the first time ever, Loic Bruni soared like some kind of flying jungle marsupial in a rainbow jersey, high above the men's field to break the beam ahead of the rest and claim World Cup victory. The Hannah siblings did their country proud, alongside a plethora of top Aussie performances in all categories to boot. Not too bad, Cairns. Soon we'll be ready to forgive those unpleasant atmospherics of 2014. To be safe, though, perhaps we'll just see how Worlds go next year before we rush into anything...

Unmissable action to follow.
All the unmissable action to follow.

Finally after two years of failed attempts the dirt was prime for racing. No rain today meant that things were running fast and tacky as hell.

Coming into round 2 it almost seemed harder to imagine Aaron Gwin not winning this race than to imagine him flat-out dominating the entire season. Now he's been undone, he's fallible after all and it's really on... Let the games commence.

bigquotesAfter a bit of bad luck with injuries for a while, my top 20 at the end of last season in Andorra I think was critical for me really. That showed that I could do this and it gave me a reason to train hard in the off-season. My goal here was 10th and it just worked out a little bit better than that! - Mick Hannah

bigquotesMan, it was fierce. I knew it was gonna be hard. My run was pretty much perfect, I couldn't ask for much more really. I left it all on the line and that sprint burned so much. But I'm glad about my result and I gotta give it up to Loic. He's riding so well right now and he's definitely hard to beat. I've never been second before and as much as I really, really wanted the win, I'm stoked to do this in my home country. Loic missed out on the win in his, so I guess this can be a bit of payback for me. - Troy Brosnan

So much 'f*%k yes' for so many reasons. Bruni's first ever World Cup win has arrived and it was a thing of beauty.

bigquotesSince World Champs there's been a lot of water under the bridge, so it's been a long winter, training hard and changing bikes too. I think we did everything to win over here, but I never expected to win because it's not the kind of track I like... a little bit too flat! But we optimised the bike to make it as rollable and light as we could. It was pretty hard in the rough sections, but in the flat section it paid off because that's where I won the race. In the last section, which is the most physical, I just got Troy from nothing. I'm pretty happy we made those choices. - Loic Bruni

bigquotesIt's always nice to qualify first because every point you can get is important - that's why we go for the best qualification. Maybe fourth took a little bit of pressure off my shoulders, but actually I felt relaxed in Lourdes, I felt relaxed here. I didn't change anything.

Maybe I was a little bit safer in some parts of this track than Lourdes, but physically I gave it everything from the top to the bottom. Now Aaron is still in front and it'll be really hard to catch up, but it's good, you know, we're showing him we're here. Troy and me and all the other riders are chasing Aaron, so it's going to be a great season and this race was wild!
- Loic Bruni

Further champagne showers are forecast for the man in the rainbow jersey in the season ahead.

bigquotesNow I need to take pee for the UCI, but after that... f*ck man, it's going to be crazy. Red Bull has a barbecue then we'll go to town and we'll celebrate this moment. It's been a long time now working hard with the team and chasing this win, and finding it today in Australia... It's pretty cool! - Loic Bruni

Clear and colourful skies at sunrise this morning as we stepped off the plane. A stark comparison to last year s race conditions.
With all said and done here in the land down under, World Cup epic-ness goes on ice for over a month. Time to see other people.... Take a class, go to the movies, distract yourselves. This is going to drag.

Not sure if Gwin is human as much as Loic is just going next-level! Also think its sick to see Danny Hart knockin' at the door this season. Lastly, thought it was so cool to see Ratboy, Minnaarr, and company stoked for him post-run!

@ka-brap: He got very lucky that the wind dropped. Brook said when he finished his run earlier that he had to pedal like a motherf*cker just to make the jumps... I guess it's gods will.

All the kids on here jizz themselves stupid that he won without a chain but Hart, Hill and Brosnan would have still won races by over 5 seconds (at Champery for example) without chains. Still, feeds into the Gwin hype I guess.
  • 31 2
@jclnv: c'm on mate, your Gwin/short chainstay/ Demo demons come out of the closet again. There is no Gwin hype, not even by a tiniest bit, when compared to Sam Hill, Smith or Bruni. From what I read, I'd say that Gwin is second most disliked man after Gee. And sorry the "luck" argument is always the language of pathetic losers. Everything is about "luck", "the luck", the opportunity is a window opened for a glimpse of an eye. you have to be there to grab it and have what it takes to grab it. It was fkng mental and mind blowing what he did in Leogang, both without the chain and without the tyre. If you can't grasp it, then some ideology is at play in your head, and sorry, I would never ever give benefit of doubt to any commenter here, that they know how to do a chainless run to finish in top50. There is not a slightest chance that any of us here has any clue what we are talking about. I've heard great riders and journos talking about his run when I was in Val Di Sole, they were repeatedly saying "I have no idea" "unbelievable" "amazing". You do not have any answer, you have the privilige to not speak of it in any other terms

@WAKIdesigns: So what you're saying is it was devine intervention to enable him to win? Or was it just that bikes work better without a chain, the wind dropped on his run allowing him to clear the jumps and he just pumped instead of pedalled which is pretty much how Bryceland races anyway.

The rear centre length argument stands BTW. Which is why he went plus 10mm. Less of an issue for Bruni and Troy as they're on mediums.
  • 12 1

Ya Loic! Good to see such quality coverage from PB because watching online SUCKED. The jungle’s so dense that trees blocked almost every camera angle. No cameras for the first 1:30 of a 3:30 track. Only one line for every section on camera, the only creative line choice is ‘left or right around the tree’. And that finish sprint?? Tough to watch a WC Downhill race decided by a 250m sprint on flat ground. Ok end rant/ it was still awesome.
  • 28 2

  • 14 1
@multialxndr: Yeah that is a good point. But then if I went to watch this race I sure as hell wouldn't have been stood at the finish line. I wanna see DH riding, not some guys pedaling along the flat.
  • 8 1
@gabriel-mission9: When u go to race's I always start at the top of the hill and walk down as the race goes on, a large portion of the spectators at downhill events are at the bottom of the track for the top couple of riders. I get that it isn't ideal and I am sure the organisers are aware that it isn't ideal too, but practically as far as setting up pits, facilities fans, media facilities, spectator viewing etc etc. You can't have the end of a world cup in dense bush it just doesn't work. If you look at the top guys it pretty much reflects general form on other steeper dh tracks anyway, it's not like you are see enduro bikes and xc riders winning
  • 2 0
 Yeah downhill in sahara desert
  • 1 1
@adirint: There isn't a single world cup that doesn't finish in an open area
  • 10 1
@gabriel-mission9: Two things - there was real DH riding, and these guys are fit as hell, it's fine to have a sprint to the finish or a few flat sections... it simply changes the dynamic of the race. It makes you have to balance the energy you need in the rough stuff with what you need on the sprint(s) and vice versa. Second, it's not like a bunch of roadies, or even XC racers won this race. It was lead (mostly) by the top riders DH that you would expect to see leading. And actually, a third thing - imagine if this track was gnarlier, and then it dumped rain like it so often does. The mud + roots + wet would make it near unrideable. I don't think they do such a bad job picking these tracks, everyone just armchair QBs so hard.

wow, world cup racing is fucking hard. I mean its crazy. If you look at the bloody talent that exists within the wc it's mind blowing. MInnar well outside the top ten, bryceland and gee also a ways back, new comers like button to the scene, top juniors fighting for top 20's in the elites.. It litterly blows my mind that these dudes can handle the pressure of this sport. One slip here or their and you drop positions faster than you can count..I mean fractions of seconds seperate riders. Think about that next time riding what a .20 of a second is like. Its funny cause by everyone else's standard's these dudes runs are pretty much the same. Point is all these dudes are beasts, And congrats to loic.

Josh Button isn't a newcomer, he just hasn't ridden world cups for about 5 years. He was 21st in the 2011 fort William race.
  • 4 0
@Roostinit: I guess a lot has happened in 5 years though. There's some serious talent thats come into fruition in that time, and for Josh to rock and stand on the podium with 2 current world champs is pretty massive.
  • 5 0
Super valid point @jo1212man 10 seconds at the end of a decent gnarly dh track is basically nothing, the top 50 riders are all nearly at the same level, the top 5 just have that extra intangible edge that makes the difference, must be so frustrating for the rest of the field trying to unlock the key to success
  • 18 1
As always team Pink Bike, fantastic coverage, sublime photos... Just magic work... Much appreciated, thank you
  • 14 5
It's an interesting spin on things from a racing perspective, but can't say I'm a big fan of the flat sprint to the finish line. What say the masses? Unique test of endurance or silly conclusion to a downhill track?
  • 9 6
The track should have ended 250m earlier. If I wanted to watch people pedaling along the flat and a race decided by thigh circumference not bike handling I'd watch xc. Or road riding.
  • 12 1
It is testament to their fitness. The rest of the track was pretty physical, but it wasn't quite as bad as some other tracks. Because of this, the sprint is a unique obstacle. Furthermore, it makes the bike setup even more of a gamble (Loic's bike for example, bouncing around in the rough) and it also makes for some interesting race strategies. I didn't mind it. What bugged me is that most of the tv coverage was of this sprint and that's not what I came to watch. Rant terminated Smile

The Cairns trackadds variety to the the WC scene. A true champion at the end of the year needs to be proven on ALL tracks, not just steep or technical. People complain about pedally bits and tracks like Pietermaritzburg, but it really does help to show the true champions that can win on all types of tracks and manage their energy through the tech bits.
  • 4 1
 @gabriel-mission9:
Yeah I agree with your comment. I'm not interested in how fast a DH racer can pedal on the flat.
  • 11 0
If we had 10+ races a year it would be great to see the variety and have a race or two decided by a pedal or rider fitness. But with such a short season we get robbed of a more traditional DH track( steep, gnar, tech, lots of line choices, interesting live stream) by having the race here. Would be awesome if they could spend a month in Aus/NZ and do 3 races(keep Cairns but add NZ gnar too), then a month in Eur - 3 races. finish a month in NA 3 races. there'd be less travel than with the current(retarded) schedule and we'd get more races and more track variety to keep things interesting. But UCI is UCI, they dont care about growing DH.

What a superb race. So happy for Bruni to take the win and for Mick Hannah to take 3rd. Also, it's good to see that Bruni doesn't in fact suffer the same kind of fate that Danny Hart suffered after winning World Championships (although what with Bruni's consistency last year I was never really worried; great to have Danny back in great shape, too, btw). If anything, Bruni really looks faster than ever. On a side note, I really like the new look of the Commencal Vallnord team. That team and DeVinci Global Racing definitely have the aesthetics of it all dialled.

Mega props Mik and Tracey. And way to go Loic. We are all so happy for the three of you. Hard work and positivity prevail.

Its kinda ironic that Demo8 was behind Gwin on the podium, how he left specialized and all. But Pope Loic totally deserves this.

congrats to Loic and now I feel that gwin will have to go beast mode to win the rest of the season with all the speed chasing him

he will get a deal with sharpie and will start gwinning again

ironic, Gwin standing in front of the Demo...

That is a pricelss photo. Gwin standing in 4th place with the winning Demo right behind him. Specialized is probably going to have that photo blown up and mounted in their wind tunnel room.

It's like them clouds is moving towards me. What was in them brownies?!?

The technique a pro rider must have to ride the way they do, must be increible. I never thought I was going to be happy that Gwin was 4th. It makes competition much more interesting and the podium a more welcoming place.

What is going on with Sam Hill? Hate to say it but you think that having kids has made him pull back a little. I bet that he'll be racing on the Enduro World Series as he seems to spend more time on his Mega than his DH rig.

Don't count him out. He's just getting back into it after being out last season with a shoulder injury. Look at how Minaar blazed back last season.

Did anybody notice that little kid behind the Top 3 Riders' podium during the live stream? That was so damn funny. Big Grin

There will always be debate about this. I do prefer DH to go down hill with a short pedal to the finish.

Say what you like, Rachel needs more competition.

Is "pyjamas" some kind of non-American way of spelling "pajamas"? I never know what's non-American and what's bad spelling.
  • 2 1
 Yep, it's un-American.

 It's English

Is it not the potato/ potahto thing?
You like tomato and I like tomahto
Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto.
Let's call the whole thing off.

I get some Americanisms where they a pretty much a phonetic spelling like if you spelt it with an I instead but the a is quite creative
