Press Release: Crust

For The Win, Forgotten Time Warp, Favorite Tight Whip, Feigned Tonsure Wardrobe, Fulsome Tawny Warrior. FTW can mean so many things, so it’s more than an appropriate name for an exclusive small run collection of dirt jump bikes designed by Crust and built by the legendary Frank the Welder.

photo

Crust’s founder Matt has built his company designing and producing the kind of bicycles that he wanted to ride, the kind of bicycles he felt the world deserved and the FTW Dirt Jumper is no exception. With a BMX history stretching all the way back to Nichole Kidman (BMX Bandits), Matt made sure the FTW Dirt Jumper was ready to jib, send, whip, skid, slash, tweak, rip, tear, and bring smiles to any skate park, street spot, or dirt jump set that comes in it way…or maybe just do a lazy manual and wobble your way though a local pump tack while kids do double flips over you.

So here’s the deal, Frank the Welder stacked an impressive series of dimes on these hand crafted frames. Crust can work with you to build it up and add a tasty mix of parts to pull the room together, or you can just take the frame and build it yourself, There’s a whole list of all the details on the website and you can also check out the pictures for reference.

I came here because of my strong BMX background and I wasn’t disappointed.

 Still hunting a Spooky Darkdide

@BostonMullit: I had a broken Sinister DNA. Great riding bikes, but I saw many a broken Sinister frame.

@suspended-flesh: I rode a Darkside for a few years in the late 90s. My friend did their original website. Fun bike but paint chipped a ton and then it cracked at the down tube/head tube junction. I held onto the frame through many moves and eventually tossed it.

@AndrewFleming: Yeah I've had nostalgia frames I kept forever and eventually recycled.

@randyridesbikes: I still have a DNA that was ridden until I built my new bike during the pandemic. Now it’s in the collection of never leaving my possession bikes.

Frank is legend! In the early days of downhill I had the luck of meeting him and his son (about 10 yes old) at Plattekill Mountain, NY. Frank was building custom DH rigs for his son at the time because nothing that small and legit for hucking existed. Was pure inspiration. Long live FTW.

that mini-dh was handed down to my son and got him started about 10 years ago.....

I worked for Frank when he had his factory here in Chandler AZ. My favorite job ever. Awesome guy, glad to see he is still up to his craft.
  • 15 1
I’m working with him in Vermont. Most fun I’ve ever had while doing a full days work. Stoked to be a part of his projects

I don't mean to be a party popper but it's just a aluminium bike frame with a run of the mill welding job.doesn't even look as good as a dabomb xlr8 from 2002..
  • 4 2
Yeah I don't get it I guess this is like "hey someone you might know did a cool project that he's proud of".

What bike company has an onlyfans link on their website though

What, they didn't think the BikePackingSucks edits would be appropriate for PinkBike?

Find The Wookie, Foil Terran Wankers, Fearless Toad Warlords, Fartputzed Texan Whores, Fancy Tooth Workers (denoting budget placement of owning such a dirt jumper) and the classic... F*ck The World.

Nah. Steel is real. Get a BTR.
  • 5 2
Those look rad but damn that's expensive, for less than half the price you can get a custom made frame from Lairdframe. A few hundred $$ less than the aluminum frame above too.

I thought FTW was F@ck The World for way too long. I even told my son not to say it, then he explained it to me. Dad Fail. But I did ride a Spooky Darkside for a few years back in the late 90s. Father Totally Wins!

That's where is came from. Outlaw biker gangs in the 60's and 70's were all about FTW.

Frame in front of green screen? Looks primed for a Photoshop Battle!

 GO GO GO!

All the riding shots appear to be in Bentonville? Is this company going to be based out of there? Interesting, as Hellion is already a boutique brand with a DJ as their primary offering (they're working on a slope/AM full suspension bike) that is based in Bentonville.
  • 2 0
They are in Richmond VA and have been around for a while. Most of their frames are gravel bikes.
  • 3 0
@93EXCivic: Got it... they probably just went to Bentonville to shoot the product launch (Salsa did some of that with the Cassidy (I think) release).

Waltons are trying to lure cycling companies to Northwest Arkansas/Arkansas (Time Cycles just announced they're basing US operations in Little Rock), so I wasn't sure if they'd landed another one.
  • 1 0
@93EXCivic: Good to know. For whatever reason, I always thought they were an Australian company (Beach vives?). Was thinking of getting one of their thick tired gravel bikes for early spring and late fall riding, shipping from VA will be less painful. I think you can fit a 27.5*2.8 in one of them. That's pretty cool.

Frank the Welder is the Mike WiLL Made-It of the mountain bike world.

So, thousand dollars for a basic frame without integrated chain tensioners?! Even taperlock dropouts would have been bare minimum.
  • 3 0
Wobble my way through a local pump track? I'm in.

Hmmm I thought FTW ment Free the Whales .
Didn't he weld up Intense frames? . Back when Intense proudly made frames in the USA .
  • 2 0
He worked welding yetis in their glory days. Spooky and another brand That I’m blanking on after that.

Matt's an awesome human being, and FTW is a legend in his own right. I was eyeing up that bike the other week, looked a superb bit of kit.
  • 2 1
I don’t want a pump track bike, but tempted to ride another frame built by Frank!

 Sold me at FTW
  • 3 0
 $1000 ?
  • 1 1
My worst opinion? A horizontal dropout plus a standard IS brake mount means you may have trouble getting your rotor at the correct depth inside your brake caliper.
  • 1 1
Yeah I'd rather have a rim brake or no brake. I guess a cable-actuated disc brake can still use a spinner but accommodating for chain stretch is going to make brake setup more trouble. I'd run a 1/2 link shadow con chain

The Aluminati hath spoken. If you like steel dirtjump bikes, you are definitely a lot stronger than me. 2.5-3 pounds of frame weight are definitely noticeable.
  • 2 0
Most alloy dirt jump frames are within 1-1.5 pounds of a steel frame. For instance, a Trek Ticket frame is 5.96 lbs (actually very heavy for an aluminum frame), and a SC Jackal is around 4.8lbs, while my Chromag Monk is 5.6 lbs. My last 3 steel dirt jump bikes have been around 25lbs without even going for a light build.

 @leon-forfar: steel is an alloy….

4130 for dirt jumps bikes. BMX background approved.
  • 11 4
 This is aluminum
  • 1 1
@krhaack: with a comment like that, he doesn't even know who FTW is!
  • 2 0
Race Inc, SE PK Ripper, and Normura to name a few were aluminum and have deep roots in BMX. I prefer steel for my DJ frame (DefCon4 / Dutch Bikes built) but done correctly aluminum will work very well too.
  • 1 0
@krhaack: apologies, I am not sure how my earlier comment landed here, it was not meant as a response for your comment!

 tuna...with crust?
  • 1 0
even tuna comes in a steel can
  • 9 9
 Steel only for DJ bikes.
  • 5 4
A lot of DJ bikes would disagree.
  • 1 2
@seraph: a few, maybe, but def not alot.
  • 7 6
Steel is the only option for a DJ
  • 2 2
Agreed, too bad many companies insist on aluminum.
  • 3 3
How so? Almost every top DJ /Slope Pro rides aluminum without issue
