Nick in Whistler where he's a local shredder!

Norco Factory Team rider Nick Geddes recently crashed in the Sea Otter Classic Dual Slalom finals and was shaken enough to check into the Monterey Hospital. While he was shaken from the crash his injuries were relatively minor and of no long term consequence. This scare did involve routine bloodwork that uncovered irregularities in his immune system which spurred on additional testing. After transferring to Stanford University Hospital for improved testing capabilities Nick has been diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

After being air-lifted from Stanford back to Vancouver and being placed in the Oncology Ward of BC Children's Hospital and has begun treatment. Nick is currently undergoing his first round of intensive Chemotherapy and is in good overall spirits. This disease and its treatment are extremely hard on the body, but Nick is very strong and determined to fight through with vigor as long as necessary.

Upon learning of Nick’s diagnosis, the staff and friends of Norco have pooled together and raised more than $2000 this week which will be donated to the Oncology Ward of the BC Childrens Hospital. In recognition of the cause and the fundraising effort, Norco PR Marketing Manager Peter Stace-Smith has shaved his head in support. A big thank you to everyone that donated.

There is a second fundraiser happening on May 15th by the Squamish BMX Racing Club. The club is holding an event called the ABA Race for life where all proceeds will be donated to the BC Children’s Hospital. For more information on this event please visit www.squamishbmx.com.

Only together can we make a difference in the fight against cancer, these are two fundraisers and there will surely be more to come so keep tuned to norco.com for the latest news. All the Norco staff and friends wish the best to Nick in his battle and hope for successful treatment and a smooth recovery. If you would like to leave your support for Nick, please comment on this post to offer your kind words.

I was in the Oncology Ward at Vancouver Children's Hospital back in 1986, 12 years old, diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma on my right humerus. Some people, including me, see cancer as the greatest challenge to the heart, mind and soul. Your body will hurt, your body may even fail you....... but that's not the end of the road. When the time comes to set your sights on your recovery, and not your illness, A time when the spectre of uncertainty will be cast off, and before you will lie the unseen horizons of the rest of your life. Cancer's a bitch, Leukemia is an even bigger bitch. Stay strong Nick, just a few words to ruminate on, from another cancer survivor. Chris, All-mountain ripper, Survivor.

^ he knows whats up. i would like to say that you will be okay. you do not seem like a bad person and in my mind, good people get good back. if you were good, you will win this battle. if not, then pinkbike will miss you dearly. win the fight!!!

^ Come on man, only positive thoughts. I can't imagine the battle ahead but as said, you're young, healthy and strong and we will all be pulling for you! That first post is evidence that nothing is set in stone. Let's see what that incredible racing potential has in store after this is all taken care of! Wink

i thought it was positive. Sorry if it wasnt!

^ Hey man, it's all good! Nothing but positive for our fellow rider!

My neighbor was diagnosed with some sort of cancer in his legs three years ago, Towards the end of last summer he had to have both of his legs amputated so the cancer would not spread to his lungs or other vital organs. About three months ago he was given about 2 weeks to live. He is still alive today, did I mention he was diagnosed when he was 9... My point is that when you have so many people praying for you and if you stay strong and positive, you can do anything.

Last year my best friend was diagnosed with stage 2b cervical cancer. She was given a 10% chance of survival, doctors told her to start preparing her kids for the worst and to make arrangements for who would bring them up after she died as it could be a matter of months away. She refused to give up and never stopped believing she would win the fight... In April she was given the all clear. Complete remission. I''ve never seen a more beautiful thing than her being told she had her life back. You will get through this Nick, I have no doubt. Stay positive and keep believing. Don't plan for the end, plan for the start. The only finish line you'll be crossing is the one on the trails. Keep planning for the future. f*ck cancer!!!
Best wishes to your family and friends too. Although he could beat this thing on his own, having you around will make it that much easier.

i hope u win the race against cancer.
  • 19 0
Nick, if anyone can beat it, its you. Everyone is wishing you well.

I have had 3 people in my family diagnosed with Cancer in the past 2 years alone, including my Mom (stage 4). It is incredible how many millions of people are affected by Cancer-Millions! We all have to support the fight in anyway we can, because in our lives we will all be faced with it in one way or another. Support local fund raisers, keep the spirit of heros like Terry Fox and people like Nick. The money is going to good use as treatments and research are making serious headway in the past 4 years but there is a long way to go.
Stay Strong Nick!

I don't even know you but this morning I shed a bit of a tear for you. Not because I think you'll lose your fight but because every time I hear of some one else with cancer it reminds me of all the people around me I've lost to it. Stay strong, fight hard. My prayers go out to you. And....Nice Job Norco. Way to stand behind your riders.

stories like this of how norco fully supports their athletes when they need it most make me much more likely to buy from a company like this instead of a company with the flashiest or nicest colours
  • 13 0
you need to look at this like it is a dh coarse, like the hardest scariest you have ever been on! But as long as you look at it with that winners mind set. Time to charge hard at this one! Best of luck in the battle (which you will win) and the recovery and doing what it takes to get back on the podium!

That's really unfortunate news. Funny how things work out though, to think his crash actually turned out to be a good thing, in that it allowed him to be diagnosed earlier. That crash might save his life.

Get well Nick! I hope you overcome this!

Is there anywhere where there is a link to making any donations towards the cause? I am sure that there are lots of people that have been affected and would be willing to give a small amount. I for one would, and I am sure that if lots of people did, it would soon add up.

Nick...I cannot speak from personal experience what so ever; however, my dad had been diagnosed with melignant melanoma and liver metastases. Operations on his back, arms and lymph nodes (twice), the whole gamut. That was nineteen years ago. On a scale of one to six, he was given a number five for severity; essentially he was handed his death-sentence. Some doctor(s) says he beat ten-thousand to one odds. His dermatologist calls him Walking Deadman, a dark yet whimsical nickname. Anyhow, I'll get to my point. Stay mentally strong. Be as mentally strong as you possibly can be; use your will. Like learning something on your bike, visualization is important. Visualize! It may sound corny, but -- seriously -- tap into the power of your mind. Cancer treatment has improved greatly since my dad was diagnosed; chemotherapy and drugs and all that stuff will do their thing, and you must do your thing too...and that is to keep your mind and your will strong. Stay positive. By doing so you help your immune system. You are at the beginning of a journey; it's a sh!tty hand you've just been dealt; life is indiscriminate; life chooses no side; and it sucks. By all deductions done in hindsight by doctors, my dad should have not survived his cancer...but he has done. Today he is N.E.D., as some put it...no evidence of disease.

Nick, I apologize for being an arm-chair physician. My aim here is to share my dad's story with you as a means by which to illustrate, at least on a small level, that cancer can be beaten. It sounds as though it's been detected early, which is key. Keep strong. Keep your mind strong. Fight!

By chance I met Nick's dad at the finish line of the DH at Sea Otter and learned of Nick and his condition. I now wear a Live Strong band on my left wrist in honor of Nick and will continue to wear it until Nick is given the all clear. We in the gravity racing disciplines are a small community world wide, and we all should stand behind Nick and support him through his time of need. God willing, I'll get the chance to meet you in Whistler and have another beer with your dad and toast your beating this horrible disease. God bless you Nick...

Is this the type of Leukemia which you need a bone marrow transplant? If so we should all get our DNA checked out to see if we are a match. I will gladly donate all the bone marrow I can if I am a match. Stay positive and you will be victorious!

i really hope you get better man, what's the point spending so much money and resources stopping people killing us from overseas and we cant even cure a virus? i personally thing every country should join together and devote a large majority of there resources on trying as hard as they can 2 cure cancer........all the best and win the race

In this documentary from filmmaker Steve Kroschel, noted MD Max Gerson reveals a nutritional healing treatment that he claims can restore the body's ability to fight off cancer and numerous other degenerative diseases. The testimonies of a few "incurable" cancer patients highlight why this long-term cure could be much more effective than many of Dr. Gerson's critics may care to admit.

I've had the real pleasure of working with Nick at training camps and MTB World Championships. Watching Nick prepare himself for that event and line himself up next to the best in the world with cool and calm composure one could sense real inner strength. While most of us only hope to survive a trail or race course He is part of that elite group that uses the challenges of the trail and his surroundings to propel himself higher and faster. Cancer is another challenge to harness, survive and come out of better than before. Fight hard, fight smart and and roll with the punches Nick. We are all rooting for you buddy!

Crazy how that happens!!! My neighbor Just had the same thing happen. Wrecked his Moto, broke a bunch of bones then went to CT and found out he has kidney cancer. Just got it removed and is already on the road to recovery. May your road to healing be smooth!! Sending you our best.....

Nick is in good hands at Children's Hospital. I've spend many days there with my child and can't say enough good things about the hospital and the doctors, nurses and support staff of the oncology unit. He is in for a very tough ride. My hopes and wishes are with him and his family. Hang in there and draw strength and support from your friends and family.
