 Really not a crazy idea at all. Beyond weight, it'll largely depend on which motor system is being used. Some have more inherent drag than others.

 @brianpark: I didn't even realize that made a difference. I need to go test ride some as I am hoping to get one. I was just going to stick with my favorite brand but now I am not so sure.

 Shimano motor bikes ride pretty much normal on flat to downhill stuff with a dead battery. Uphill you notice the weight but there isn’t any other detectable drag.

 This actually happened when I test rode the Levo a few months back - unbeknownst to me the battery connecter got jogged loose on a chunky downhill and I had to pedal that beast backup to the pits on my own power. DEFINITELY noticed the extra weight compared to my acoustic bike.

 i always ride my sight vlt with the battery off when i ride with my gf.. shes fast and its a workout keeping up to her..and the downhill is the same either way.. it rides great without the assit, other than the weight..

 a few years back a sweeper marshal at a race I was also marshalling at was using an ebike, he did 30 miles happily on it then the battery died. He tried riding back to base and only managed about 3-4 hilly miles under his own steam, i was sent out to pick him up in the truck, when I got to him I swear he was green.

 I pedal my shimano equipped bike without the motor on flat terrain all the time. It's not as easy to accelerate as a normal bike and uphill you won't get far without the motor. The gen x3 bosch motor has serious drag but the new one doesn't.

 I don't know how much drag it introduced, but the yt decoy sounded awful with no boost under pure human power. Like one of those wind-up flashlights but a lot louder.

Whirrrrrr, WHIRRRRRR. Not sure if it was the Shimano motor since it was a preproduction. Maybe it was the mode it was in? It wasn't the rider's bike (he was borrowing it) and he was trying to conserve power to get through the ride with some juice left for the climbs.

 They reviewed the most expensive top of the line carbon spec E-bike$7500, then tell you is starts at $4500! Let's see that review on that $ probably an aluminum and 55lbs, bait and switch!

 @KalkhoffKiller: Well maybe he had it in eco not off (not his bike, first time on an e-mtb), but it was definitely noisy pedaling on flats with little or no boost. I found a video of the bike and it was a shimano e8000.

You are comparing it to your musical bike? Maybe you have sram brakes on you other bike?
Acoustic doesn’t mean non-electronic and it is so cringe worthly using it in this context. Please drop it!

 Batteries don't fail, unless you abuse them, but they do run out of charge. Just park below your trail if you can. If you ride an ebike a bit, its pretty easy to avoid tho.

 @slayerdegnar: Actually, they do. I had a Bosch battery die for no apparent reason, and couldn't any support from either Bosch or KTM. I had other problems with the Bosch system and their support - they don't like American business was the best I could figure. I'll never own either's bike offerings again after those very expensive headaches.

 The C2 looks like the bike to get, upgrade the fork cartridge and it's arguably as good as the C1. Especially if you prefer XT over GX. The line looks amazing! Keep killin it, Norco! Can't wait to try one! Griztour?

 looks like those are renders of a CAD model Photoshoped into an assembled bike. The CAD doesn't show welds, so the tube intersetions are not as blended together as they would be.

 Anyone else notice the sideways mounted piggyback shock? Seem like an interesting solution to fit a water bottle.

 I noticed this setup, only because the specs say Rock Shox Super Deluxe, but looking at the photo you can't see the reservoir. I wonder if it is an issue not with the water bottle, but rather the compression? The Trek Rail has the Rock Shox Deluxe, but no Supers with the reservoir. Trek uses a custom Deluxe with a small reservoir near the top of the shock, along with their re:Acktiv through shaft. I wonder if that reservoir on the VLT will be hitting the inside leg when riding? Other than that question, for me, this bike looks like the bike to beat in the category in terms of price, specs, latest geometry.

 @jorukfundan: they rotate the shock not because of the water bottle or frame issues.... It's so they can fit the range extender battery.

 i have enduro bike and i buy 2019 vlt 2 14 days ago ...beacouse of job i dont ride much like beafore so ebike is cool for me now ...i ride now 2 or 3 rides in row and Norco VLT is quite playful bike with proper setup , i like it day by day more - i hate ebikers too but when i try friends Hibike i changed my mind haha - oweral great bike and my first Norco after 13y opf Commencal era ..

 Just like fat bikes. And 26” wheels. And fully rigid bikes. Trends come and go. We’re seeing a market explosion like we did with plus tires. I doubt the market will be as saturated in 2030.

I have to disagree with you. A large segment of people are inherently lazy and will always take the easier way to get things done. Down vote me into hell, but an Ebike plays into that laziness. Less effort needed to get to the top. As these get cheaper, and lighter over time, more people will invest in them. Plain and simple.

 @johnnygolucky: I have a Pivot Shuttle in my garage, it’s my wife’s but it fits me fine. I have ridden it twice, once to run a shuttle when riding with my wife and once to see how fast I could climb a fire road.

So no, it’s not a product most people will someday own, just as most mountain bikers don’t have a moto and most road bikers don’t have a street bike.

But if this sort of rationalizing makes you feel justified in riding an ebike, good for you.

Plain and simple: ebikes are for folks who can’t adequately, in their estimation, ride a regular bike.

 @nurseben: @nurseben: Really? Just did Soquel today, the big 19 mile loop with Flow and Braille on my acoustic. Good time too. Yet last Friday i demoed the Levo SL down in LA and did a super monster ride above Malibu with a local. Got us three insane descents where on our normal rigs we can do 1.5 on the same stuff. So I’m pretty “adequate” on my acoustic, yet easily found the use case for the SL. How’s that figure into your declarative broad brush statement?

 @gafoto: Rapid rise and dual control shift/brake levers left. And you probably can't find hubs and brake rotors for the original oversize Saint centerlock standard (and a hub axle that threads into your Saint or Hone rear mech). That must have been the dark age for Shimano, introducing too much new stuff at once. Hollowtech II from that same era survived though. Typically it is new tech that needs to prove itself but once enough people are on it and unwilling to go with the times (like me) spares and also new products will be available for a good while. 26" wheels, lower number of gears, the Shimano HG freewheel interface, everything will be available for well over another decade.

 With the uphill assist, and the planted feel of the added weight on downhills, the weight question is less important than component durability.

 @Geochemistry: Yeah but it's not really beneficial if you have to carry or transport the bike. Also jumping or doing a manual is more difficult the heavier it gets.

 @KalkhoffKiller: So you'll be a stronger rider, when you beef-up those wimpy arms and torso muscles. Another win for using an eBike!

My truck and my Kuat rack have no problem transporting two ebikes, and even my diminutive-stature wife has no problem picking up her ebike to load.

Oh, and if it's too steep to ride, most ebikes have a walk mode to help pull you up the incline.

 Interesting that the price point on the A2 is exactly the same as the YT Decoy 29 ($4,400) YET the Sight has, get this, 10 speed. Seems like they really wanted to get down to that price at all costs. This looks like a killer bike though. For sure making me think twice on the Decoy 29

 What's wrong with ten speed? That's what you get with Deore and whoever chooses Deore isn't some weirdo going "sure I can ride the hell of it no probs but what will the instagram bros say?". Range is good enough, especially if you already have pedal assist. Wear parts like chain and cassette are cheaper than the 11sp or 12sp alternatives which matters loads too for those who think ahead when they buy a complete product and are on a budget.

 Any opinion on that super-steep seat tube angle? And is that chainstay so long (compared say to a Rail) because of the Shimano motor?

 Is there really enough of a market for all these e-bikes, especially the higher-end models like this Norco? Seems like there's a saturation point somewhere pretty near. Especially with all the resistance from people (like me) who consider themselves "real" mountain bike riders, i.e. wouldn't be caught dead on one of these things, earn our downhill rides by actually pedaling UP the hill, ride to be fit and stay fit. The bike biz is in an era of really fast trend-following right now (long and slack, no matter what the application!!), where product differentiation lasts about 5 minutes. The flooding of the market with $5k-$12K e-bikes feels like more desperate me-too marketing. For all the e-bike hype as we're seeing here on PB and elsewhere, I'm sure not seeing many of these things on my trails.

 Dude, you’re limiting yourself for no reason other than to be too cool for school. I’m a New Englander in CA right now for a MTB vacation. Stay fit-ish on Zwift as riding outside is just snow ice and shit. Did several huge rides on my acoustic in LA area, and today did big loop at Soquel that included Flow and Braille. So yea, I earn my turns with the best of them. But last Friday I demoed the new Levo SL in LA. Local took me on a huge ride above Malibu that included three huge secret descents. That ride we can get in 1.5 of those descents on our normal rigs. By end of the ride I was toast, 2 bars left on battery, and happy as a pig in shit. So yea, there’s a very real use case for these, and you’re not doing yourself any favors by picking a tribe. IMHO, of course. But with all due respect, my prediction for you is you’ll be enjoying them within 4 years and completely redact your current sentiment from the record. :-D

 We were all resistant at first, turns out it’s fun. I doubt many people have ebike as their only bike, so likely they are also “real” mountain bikers. I also like woodworking and playing with my kids, why limit myself to a single activity? Variety is the spice of life!

39 years ago, road bikers said the same thing about MTBs. Different century, new generation, same Luddite attitudes towards advancement.

 Where I live there isn't much need for an e-bike,( unless you're living with physical limitations). I went up north a couple months ago with guys that race enduro(a couple sponsored) and all of them and a lot of the riding community in the area also had e-bikes.
On one trail I'll call at best, boring, I got a chance to ride an e bike and it made a dull trail fun! There is certainly a use for these, maybe not as your sole bike but if it opens up new areas and improves a boring trail, then why hate it?

 Isn't it simply trunion mount, turned inline with the frame, and flipped upside down? I can't visualize how that shock is loaded any different than when mounted in a typical fashion with this horst type design. The loading looks to be right down through the shock with no side loading. But I'm not an engineer. I only know about my Specialized Enduro that ate Cane Creek shocks for a while until they Cane creek beefed up some bushings. That suspension design seemed to cause some "side loading" to the shock.
