FlowCup DH at Shellburg Falls Event Re-Cap

Grassroots racing is getting an epic boost of support from Chris Eggen and Unreal Cycles Timing. No one likes stressing over 'one' race run. "You only get one practice and one race run for how much money?" Well here's the down low, the inside on what is the future for DH racing. JAM FORMAT! Yeah. I said it, I'm hyped on it. You know why? It's too simple for the obvious reason. Race started at 11am. You can go in any order you want, Dads can stay with their kids, wives or girlfriends. Once you arrive at the start, you are handed a lanyard with a plastic card - it's to place your start time sticker. Pre-made, to start on every minute. (One minute intervals!) and you get in line, in order of your start time. You can take runs until 3pm! Easy huh?

OK, you're on the start ramp, it's your start time. Peter from Unreal Cycles Timing gives your a 15 second heads up "racer ready" at 7-5 seconds he says clearly "Racer-Watch the gate!" Gate drops- Moto or BMX style if you need a mental visual. And off you go down the brand new track called 'Payback' that is about 1:20 (fastest pro times) to 5:30 for the slowest beginners who were pre-teenagers mind you.

Cross the finish line and Party-time Pete walks your finishing time to you. Do the simple math. You got a 'target' time, even if it was your first 'warm-up' run of the day. Now here is the cool part- get back up to the start and get another start time sticker and run the track again. After your 4th run (and a majority of the racers did that easily) Unreal Cycles Timing then lined up the racers- scanned their times (took no time at all, maybe a 20min break) and the truck was back to lapping the Shellburg Falls Freeride Area. MORE THAN 5 RUNS! How cool huh?

The Oregon Iris Was Everywhere

During the racing, a band seriously inspired by the Foofighters and Led Zepplin named "Slight of Hand" played some great riffs while the racers threw horns and shouted props. Several flying drones or copters were also spotted chasing racers down the track with picture perfect weather.

Huge Thanks To Our Supporting Sponsors

Raffle Time! We placed all the racers' number plates into a huge plastic bin, shook it up and a young girl named Rachel pulled the numbers out. The big winner took home a Norco Rampage! But everyone got something eventually. Soon after I was able to do what I really enjoy, the results. We began with Cat 2 class first due to one racer making it tough on the timing team, but we solved it quickly and we quickly handed out the FlowCup Medals. Gold, Silver and Bronze, the only thing true to tradition of racing.

That pre-teen was 10 years old along with his 12 year old brother that started with a time of about 6min and ended the day with a 3:13 to take third in 18 and under cat3. and this was done on front suspension only 20" hard tail walmart style bikes. Way to go boys!

Those kids were the best. There should have been a most improved time award.

Excellent Idea! I shall make that happen at the next flow cup.

Some bracket racing would create another way to win.

Idea: In between the 2nd and 3rd runs people can guess what "time" they will run. That will be written on their score timing card, in say a color ink, and once down have a designated person check the time with the racer both initial it and record. And..... 1-2-3 winner like that.

( Or at least have it for the older guys with the winner buying the beer )

That event was a great format and the faster guys kept pushing it. With that type of timing system and all the runs you can get in It gives EVERYONE a chance to better their times.

For $50.00 you got 2 days of shuttles, race entry, timed runs, dinner included and live music plus the number plate raffle.

This was such a fun day of shootin' the shit, jammin' out and shredding brown pow! Thanks again to all the organizers, volunteers and people who kept it together all weekend, this was definitely one of the best grassroots races I've ever been to. Does anyone know if there are any more pictures of racers doing skids and wheelies?
