DAVID MCMILLAN

If you follow downhill racing and consider yourself a fan, then there's probably a good chance that you can reel off a long list of established heavy hitters. The riders who have won important races and garnered their fair share of podiums and some, perhaps, who have even won championships. But with 80 riders qualifying at every round, of which you could argue are the fastest 80 riders in the world, you're going to struggle to name them all. But there are some racers who we all know and for reasons other than those mentioned. Racers who have yet to have that breakout result but seem to get our attention one way or the other. One such rider on our radar and indeed, many of yours, is Austrailian David Mcmillan. When he's not sideways over huge jumps, endlessly manualling through dips or drifting around loose corners on the World Cup circuit, he's engaging his creative side alongside his crew, the Vanzacs. A rabble of fast and wild Aussie and Kiwi racers who, in the spirit of those who collectively served their respective nations and fought in the World Wars, the Anzacs, live the privateer life from their vans and document their wild times for their fans. Larger than life and certainly having more fun than most of their peers, David, and the Vanzacs, represent the true essence of downhill mountain bike racing and we, for one, can't imagine the race scene without them...

Who is David Mcmillan?
A 22-year old Free Racing Gypsy who's wingin' it.

Where are you from and where do you live?
I’m from Australia’s capital, Canberra and I still live there too. It's also the home of Steve Peat's world champs winning run.

Who do you ride for?
Specialized, Deity, Vans, SRAM, Oakley and Thredbo Resort. They all help me keep the dream alive!

Where are you happiest?
When I'm roaming the world, but even an adventure 2-hours from home... As long as I'm with a solid crew of people.

What’s been your favourite race/contest venue?
I've been to so many awesome places over the years it's hard to say... I think anyone would say Crankworx Whistler but if that didn't exist probably Crankworx Rotorua. This year they had the best whip off jump I've ever ridden, an amazing DH track and I got to ride the slope style course on my downhill bike with all the slope boys, which was rad... McGazza Forever!!!

Where are your favourite trails?
Pila, Italy. Schladming, Austria or Queenstown, New Zealand. That place is what dreams are made of!

What are your strengths?
Landing Sideways.

What are your weaknesses?
Putting a full race run together, fitness, being indecisive and FOMO (the Fear Of Missing Out).

What’s been your worst crash over the years?
Bending my fingers at a 90-degree angle is definitely one that comes to mind! I was racing a street race in Perth on a hardtail with flat pedals and slipped my foot on the lip of a small hip. I decided to ditch the bike but threw it the wrong way and I ended up landing fingers and face first into the tarmac instead of the ramp. My fingers ended up only being dislocated but they will never be the same. They are now called the Salad Fingers...

What’s been your luckiest escape?
Escaping winter every year.

Which bike from over the years, conjures up the best memories?
My 24" Kona Stuff Jnr was pretty rad back when I was just a pup, I used to try and send it off the biggest stair set we could find after school and go for massive missions in the pine forest for hours and hours. I did my first race on it and that's what started this whole bike life rollercoaster.

What bikes are you riding right now?
I have a Specialized S-Works Demo, S-Works Enduro and P3, a Deity Cryptkeeper, Suzuki RM125 and an FBM Steadfast BMX! Quite the fleet of wheels.

Who’s your favourite rider?
There's too many but I’d have to say Brendan Fairclough. I've always watched him in videos since I started riding and he’s pretty much doing what I want to do with the whole ‘free racing’ thing... Also Tyler Bereman. He is so good to watch on a moto!

Who or what inspires you?
People who love to have a good time and live in the moment. The FEST boys are inspiring me at the moment to have a go at sending it and make some loose videos.

What do you enjoy doing away from bikes?
I've always enjoyed making videos of the stuff my mates and I get up to over the years. I recently bought a pan and zoom "dad cam" so iMovie will be getting a workout over the next few months. I have a longer feature length video planned in my brain - watch this space. I also enjoy a few sociable ales...

What are you listening to right now?
Old Thing Back - Matoma.

What’s your favourite movie/ TV show?
East Bound and Down.

What’s your favourite non-bike website?
Spotify.

What’s your favourite motto or saying?
"She’ll be right."

What grinds your gears?
My alarm going off at 5am every morning for work... You gotta earn those fun tokens somehow!

What makes you happy?
Hanging out with good humans, random adventures, big jumps, traveling, good vibes, good parties, good music, girls, happy people, a fresh pair of Vans, Moto, Whistler and Queenstown.

Home Is Where You Park It - Episode 3 Vanzacs

If you weren’t a pro mountain biker, what would you be doing?
I would probably be living the tradie life and living for the weekend.

If you were in charge of the sport, what changes would you make?
I’d probably have World Cups in different locations and all over the world instead of basically the same tracks each year, preferably close to big cities for crowds or just interesting places. Build big bike parks with big jumps and loamy trails all over the place and have more whip comps. I'd also have way more hot energy drink girls cruising around the pits too...

When you hang up your racing shoes, how do you want to be remembered?
Just a guy who went with the flow and had fun!

What does the future hold for David McMillan?
I've been racing World Cups for the past few years as a privateer and living in a van for months at a time or a ‘VANZAC’ and basically paying my own way with no real results... Apart from having the time of my life! So for the rest of the year I’m going to just enjoy riding and not worry about racing as much. I'm heading to Canada for a while for some A-Line party trains, some road trips, maybe a quick trip to Europe for Crankworx and some Vanzac missions, making videos along the way. I wouldn’t mind checking out Rampage one day too, but your guess is as good as mine. Beyond this year if anyone has a suggestion, feel free to swing it my way!

"Putting a full race run together, fitness, being indecisive and FOMO (the Fear Of Missing Out)"

Now that is a relatable list of weaknesses.

Definitely one of my favorite riders to watch, so much style. Watching him throw down some seriously sideways whips/scrubs during the whip offs here in whistler was impressive, surprised he managed to roll away from those sideways landings. Love the vanzac edits!
