James Doerfling’s Eternal Search for the Perfect Line - Video

by O'Neal Racing
O’NEAL are super excited to have hooked up with Scott Secco following the huge success of his Builder movie last year.

Our first project with him is with Knolly Bikes’ big mountain rider James Doerfling doing what he does best in his native British Columbia. Doerfling hits the last big lines of the season before the winter sets in around Williams Lake and Scott was there to capture it all:

bigquotesAutumn in the Cariboo region of British Columbia is magical: the leaves turn a bright orange and more importantly there's enough rain to soften the famous chutes along the Fraser River for maximum shred-ability. Filming with Doerfling is a treat for me as he's incredibly fun to watch on a bike and a real workhorse. He's always willing to hike up for ''another'' and has so much style and power on the bike. I'm already looking forward to my next trip to Williams Lake. We hope you enjoy the video!

bigquotesIt's funny how every year I think it's going to be harder and harder to find these new lines... but I keep on finding better stuff the deeper I search. This project was a lot of fun and there is something to be said about the search and everything that goes into finding these zones, which I think is one of the funnest parts of freeride! The search will never end for the perfect line...

Watched this morning, went riding, came home & watched it again. Awesome line & creative riding. Love the raw gulley descent at the end from the drone cam.

does anyone else click "add to favorites" first when they read doerfling or knolly?

 I do

Everything I see about Knolly Bikes I like, I think I'll buy one. Before I do, just to confirm, if I buy a Knolly will I shred like Dorefling and Macfarlane?
  • 44 2
I own 3 Knolly, the more you buy, the more you shred. But only when you're asleep.
  • 5 1
Best decision you'll ever make is to buy one!

I bought an Endorpin 27.5 last year. Absolutely phenomenal bike.

Currently rocking an 09 Delirium T, and it still kills it. Also, surprisingly not terrible on the climbs.

Podium

Best bikes I have ever owned.
Confidence inspiring, but also with enough in reserve to save your bacon when confidence is greater than skill.
Thanks Noel!!

At the eurobike 2015 the german Knolly Distributor told me that the Brand is working on a new "Podium" cause i´ve asked about the frame and what things will change. so this was his answer. Will be Interesting so see some new stuff from knolly. Smile
  • 2 0
They already announced the new Podium here in PB. It will be the same but with 27,5 wheels, no big changes in geometry.
  • 1 0
Yeah the 27.5 podium is confirmed. Due to the wheel change, the geometry will be changing. I can't yet tell you if it'll be a lot or just little changes but it will change!

 Adding to favorites.
Thank you Scott Secco and James Doerfling Smile

*I was thinking this video should be dedicated to Kelly McGarry and sure enough the message came at the end. You guys rock!!! Cheers.
  • 20 0
The very best way to honour Kelly Mcgarry is to freeride.

Sorry, only read abour mirra after commmenting on this. Mcgarry and Dave Mirra

That run literally had everything needed, fast open sections, huge senders, steeps and technicality along with style and flow. it was pure awesome! (but some judges say thats a 3rd place kind of line, *cough cough* Ram*cough*page*cough* damnni think i am getting sick... of bs judges.)

Couldn't agree more, we even didn't saw his quali run filmed, what a shame ! Hope Doerfiling will get the place he deserves for 2016 Rampage.

Big mountain competition is BAD for the health.
I'm not watching it for 2016 (at least not live. If nobody dies I'll watch the reviews).

This vid had everything! Great overhead, POV and ground-level shots. Incredible lighting (loved the drop into darkness), ridiculous riding, tolerable music AND a raw segment at the end. And it didn't have a ton of slo-mo or a shot of the rider putting on his goggles. Oh - and a Knolly. And James. Throwing in a tribute to McGazza on such a masterpiece is fitting.
  • 2 0
Well said sir. His sideways drift slo mo was just the right amount of slo mo.

Finding the zones, the Google earth'ing and planning the logistics of the trip. Probably the most time consuming and in some ways the hardest part of the freeride fresh lines thing. Glad Doerfling brought attention to this in his comment. It would probably be a video in itself of how he does it.
  • 4 0
Yes these trails look amazing, but was wondering about how easy/difficult the access to these trails are?
Can you get more than one run in a day?
  • 2 0
Loved every aspect of this video! Doefling constantly amazes, and these video edits are perfection. I liked the music; and the raw audio at the end was such a great finish. Can't wait to see these types of edits on the new Delirium next year.

Now, every time I see a name on a pink bike I assume they're dead… thankfully this was not the case.
  • 5 0
after the week bikes have had, THANK YOU FOR THE STOKE!
  • 3 0
As usual, I can find no fault with a Doerfling edit. Beautiful country, great lines and speed, and I loved the negative space in some of Secco's shots. Great job.
  • 4 0
Wow, so awesome... the riding and film making. Thanks guys.
  • 2 0
That last chute was crazy. After riding something like that nothing else must ever feel steep. And that step down was massive.
  • 2 0
That was awesome, man what a beautiful area. And oh yeah, amazing riding as usual by Doerfling, what a badass dude! Great work all!

Genuine question- How come SR Suntour makes an appearance at the opening credits yet he has Boxxers and a CaneCreek shock on his bike??
  • 3 0
He doesn't. Those are the new rux, and he uses a Canecreek in the rear like most knolly riders do! I don't believe there is a suntour rear shock for downhill yet.
  • 2 0
Ok, thanks for the reply, they looked very Boxxer'ish at first glance.
  • 2 0
So sick at 1:20. I love that the places he rides don't have exits. He always ends up in the middle of nowhere Smile
  • 3 0
How do the cameras pick up the bike noises when they are so far away??
  • 16 0
 Telephoto mics
  • 1 0
They don't, normally you put them in there in sound post production.
  • 1 0
 seem to be logical @mb00033
  • 1 0
Well..the shot with helmet cam suggests it was just the sound file from the cam laid over the arial/drone footage in post?
  • 2 0
Awesome video. Classic. Smooth. With all those drone angles people must of thought it was a U.S. drone strike.
  • 7 0
No hospitals were harmed so no Smile

I've forgotten what sunshine looks like... Thanks for the reminder
  • 3 0
Do you even freeride bro?!?! Yes, yes he do. *picks jaw up off the floor.
  • 2 0
How'd they get that sound??? so nice
  • 2 0
I have a huge man crush on Doerfling.
  • 2 0
Big lines shot with drones! fuk yeah!

  • 2 0
awesome! wonder what IMBA would say about the flow of this trail???
  • 2 0
What trail? If it were a trail, it wouldn't be freeride.
  • 2 0
It would be cool to see how steep some of these lines are in person
  • 2 0
 That last chute was steeeeep!
  • 2 0
Sick line ! Nice edit !
  • 1 0
Yeah!! It's been way too long since his last edit, keep them coming!
  • 1 0
I'll show you a perfect line. Where's my white bag?
  • 1 0
 yeah COWBOY ! Sick!
  • 1 0
 wow
  • 1 3
The music actually took away from this video. Should have left it raw.
  • 3 0
I personally think it was well-done: music for most of it, then raw for the final clip of the full line.
  • 1 0
 Anyone know the music artist?
  • 1 0
IDK, but it sounded like Courtney Love.
  • 2 0
@vesania King Tuff - Sun Medallion

Is any of that new footage? It all looks like the same stuff from Where The Trail Ends
