In a new episode of the Take a Lap series, we traveled to Nandrin, Belgium, to find out what Martin Maes is like beyond competition in his everyday life in the place where he grew up.

Martin Maes welcomed us into his home for a peek inside his life. No racing, no pressure, just at home in Nandrin, Belgium. With a month to go before the Enduro World Series season begins, Martin showed us how the bike has always been present in his life and how he has grown after the birth of his daughter, Clementine, or “Clem,” as he calls her.

The Belgian rider joined the Orbea Fox Enduro Team this season to further the team’s collective goal of performing their best at the Enduro World Series and fighting their way to the top.

Martin also signed on to become a key player in the development and testing process of Orbea products, which was seen during the Lourdes Downhill World Cup, where Martin competed on a modified Rallon under the OOlab project. You’ll find him again at Fort William later this summer.

The sad thing is that nobody in Belgium knows about this guy. In the country of cycling, nobody talks about mtb. They only go on and on about road racing and cyclocross. Really sad since we have had some great riders in the past and present.

Yep. Same thing with Nico Vink back in his downhill days.

Loved watching this.
I used to race Martin’s dad back in the day. Super fast guy also!

Truly great riders. The first mtb Olympic gold medalist! I think sometimes people forget. And some fantastic terrain actually. I was working at Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege and mentioned to one of our team soigneurs that the terrain in that part of Belgium was amazing for mountain biking and he just blinked at me.

Belgium is much known as the mecca and birthplace of pigeon racing. Hope he gets the recognition he deserves.

How is Martin only 25 years old?? Seems like he's been on top forever

That's what I thought as well. He was picked up by GT so early and was already on top at 16 years old

Went under the radar but aside from the one off, Maes had an excellent first showing at the DH World cup in March. Seriously talented and I'm interested to see how he does the rest of the season and in EWS.

We have now 4 trails center in Belgium. Small country but great trails. And the level is pretty nice. It begins to grow and that's good for us. Because as some of u says, nobody talks about mtb in Belgium... Now we have 4 trail centers, but we miss bikepark, but it is more complicated. We have one but it need a good refresh. And the another one is good. Big structure, bmx race, skatepark, but it runs by old guys who only thinks about the ski. We have like 1 or 2 weeks by year of snow... hope they are gonna put money on the bikepark
