American young gun Luca Shaw took first in Qualies today. He cut his teeth with Specialized last year and had a some great results Val Di Sole being one of the best for him. This year he is on the new TLD Sram program. He certainly has put in hard work over the winter and it looks to be paying off.

It would be a lie to say that is wasn t a bit of a surprise to see Rat Boy smash out a 2nd place qualifier in front of his powerhouse teammate and pre race favorite Greg Minnaar.

Mick Hannah is definitely the danger man here in Pietermaritzburg. He has been looking incredibly fast all week but Qualies just didn t work out in his favor today. A race run crash landed him at the back of the field in 92nd place. Mick will be hungry for the top spot on the podium tomorrow.

Taylor Vernon has been steadily picking up speed with each run and has a tricky alternate line through the new rock garden. With a 3rd place today in the Junior qualifying it s good to see he him healthy and back on pace.

Johannes Fischbach could be the dark horse tomorrow, currently sitting just outside top ten.

Yesterday we posted a photo of Wyn Masters Dragging his bars through this corner so today it only seemed fitting to show a photo of him leaned over from the other side.

Andrew Neethling always seen to have a bit of bad luck here in his home country with crashes or mechanicals. Hopefully he got it all out of his system today and can find some podium speed tomorrow.

Enduro is just that little bit radder when Brendan s behind bars. It was easy qualification for him at 28th but there are no signs yet if he has the x-factor on this course that Ropelato was demonstrating to challenge the top steps.

Every year is championship contention year for Gee Atherton and the right start is key. He has a very strong but unexceptional history on this course and after his fall today in the rocks he will be quite unsure whether he s up to pace on African soil.

I knew I had to get a good top split in to be competitive so I absolutely smashed the first bit. A bit sketchy in places but carrying good speed then keeping it rolling and braking as little as possible... I got sort of separated from Greg and Steve in training I don t know why. Guess we had a lover s tiff from our love triangle. I m sure we ll make up... they might want to practice with me now haha

After the news of Gwin leading in the qualifications the locals began rioting in the streets and even burned a few cars...
Think what may happen to the internet tomorrow if Gwin wins on an Enduro...

Represent. Aaron Gwin might not have had the season he wanted last year but it looks like things are working themselves out. Yeah things are really coming together. I don t feel like I was really that far off the pace as my results were showing last year. I felt like I was right there but I was just having bad luck in my race runs and a couple things just weren t lining up. You have races like that you put in all the hard work you do everything to prepare and sometimes things don t work out. People like to jump on things like that. The team and I have been working hard all off-season getting ready and things are really coming together. At this point I think we are pretty dialed and I m looking forward to just racing bikes and having fun. That s what it s all about.

  • 1 0
not sure about this, but as a protected rider he shoudln't be dropping in at the beggining of the race,
edit: In 2012 Gwin spent almost the full day on the hot seat, it was on Fort William, he crashed twice on qualis

Ratboy winning would be beyond awesome...especially on this track, where he's not considered a major contender, per se. If anything, his top-section serves notice that he's going to be one to watch on some of the techier courses thru this season.

It's a good thing Gwin has fun racing bikes, considering that's what he does for a living. #nsmbvideosaremakingmecynicalashell
  • 6 3
Gwin then Hill then Brosnan, in that order top 3.
  • 2 0
No way. Although i like your idea of Australian domination. Substitute Mick in there for hill and do a little rearranging and you might just have it though.
  • 1 1
Ok, how about, Gwin, then Hill, then Brosnan, then Mick?
  • 3 0
im going hannah, gwin, minnaar, gee, ratboy.

Does anyone think Gee has fun? He always looks so serious
  • 4 1
I blame Dan for Gee being so damned serious!!! Wink
  • 5 1
Ya as much as I respect Gee for being a top athlete of the sport, I have a hard time liking the guy. He is just so serious and almost seems as if he doesn't want to be there. Possibly just during interviews he acts in that manner, he could be a totally different guy behind the scenes. But every clip I see of him hes always so serious and never really looks too excited to be getting paid to do what he loves and what he is talented at
  • 3 0
Its gees approach and its hard to argue when he is one of the best riders in the world with multiple wins and titles under his belt. Staying focused sometimes means been in your own world and not show to much emotion on race day. Lots of prep mentally to win. Some guys can turn it on and off others like to stay zoned in all day.
  • 2 1
Yea but even in edits of just training or hanging out I hardly ever see a smile. Whenever I see Gwin, Stevie, Eliot Jackson, they are all smiles and bring a good vibe to the sport. Gee makes it seem like he's a part of the military
  • 10 0
Ratboy, Gee, Hart, Peaty, Beaumont, Brendog in order of first to sixth. NO BRITISH BIAS HERE!
  • 2 0
Yeh ok Gee does look serious during interviews and maybe he does need to try show hes enjoying it more! However I'm pretty sure anyone who has watched the atherton project should realise he does love riding and actually when hes in a more relaxed atmosphere he does show that he enjoys what he does!
  • 12 0
Good to see Gwin potentially back to his old ways. Brilliant to see Bryceland up there too! Super excited for this season to start, it's going to be a good one!
  • 2 0
My sentiments exactly! I'm intrigued at how the top-20 fared. Most of the names are the same, but the order they're in is quite different to the "norm".
  • 8 0
Gwinny! And Ratboy! Two of my favorites, tomorrow should be fun.
  • 6 0
Haha funny Gwin photo at the bottom. Relaxed is good for tomorrow Smile quintessential Sam Hill moment is on top of the podium. Good luck sam.

Is anyone else getting the feeling that by some riders using 29'ers, 650b's, with single crown forks and DH-->AMish frames, a new mtb category will arise, say "All downhill mountain" bike?
  • 9 1
Wheel size debates are so 2013... :p
  • 4 1
 SOOO 2013!!!
  • 1 1
No, can we please not turn this sport into MotoGP.
  • 2 0
Don't pick on MotoGP. You can't blame them for trying to keep Marquez on the same lap as everyone else =P
  • 1 0
Yeah, Lorenzo will show up at the next race with ABS and race direction will just shurg their shoulders.
  • 1 0
Qatar race was nuts...It's been one of the best races in a long long time hands down. Even better to see underdogs challenging for top spots, and Rossi being the old wolf giving battle to Marquez for 1st. WAY much better than what is the laughing stock of F1 IMO.
  • 1 0
Oh yeah i agree 100%. My favourite moment was when Marquez made a really tight pass on the inside of Rossi, and then 3 or 4 corners later Rossi just shoved it up the inside of Marquez, he was never going to get the drive out of the corner for the pass to stick, but it was just to say "hey, two can play at that game buddy. Bring it on." But its not like they think badly of one another, its all just friendly competition. They get off their bikes, shake hands and have a laugh after they battle. You won't get that in F1, its all very political.
  • 1 0
Actually that's exactly what happened in the last F1 round which was a brilliant race BTW.
  • 1 0
Actually 26" dh bikes are sitting in 2 and 3 so until now I see no reason to get worked up about wheelsize or enduro. I know editors have to do their job though...

I have missed every moto race this year. not happy, might need to catch up with some online replays. sounds like Qatar is a must watch
  • 1 0
There's only been the one in Qatar. The next one is early tomorrow morning from America.
  • 1 0
ah good. Has it been televised?
Usually I watch the coverage on ten or one but I never caught any info about it been on?
  • 1 0
Hasn't happened yet. It's from Indianapolis. You could conceivably torrent it a few hours after the race, if they're not airing it on ONE assuming you go in for that sort of thing, which I am not....
  • 2 0
Here in Australia they are airing it on One HD. I have it set up to record early tomorrow morning. I think the coverage goes from 3:30 Am till 7am
  • 1 0
Personally I think most bikepark rats could do with mini DH bikes like the 160-180mm one off DH bikes we are seeing here rather than full on DH bikes. I would consider a 180mm double crown fork.
  • 1 0
 @hooly
cheers, 3;30 damn it I need to go buy a DVR/PVR not too keen on getting up that early.

Does anyone know who won the womens NCAA basketball tournament? Can anyone name a single WNBA team? Yet here I am, for the first time in my life interested in a Womens sport! Hope Atherton gets better!
  • 2 0
really stoke to see some great coverage of the womens class here on pinkbike.
  • 2 0
How come the speshy guys aren't using the status??? Is 180mm still too much travel?? The enduro dh looks sweet though! As does hills mega dh! Will make for good racing
  • 2 0
The Status has 200mm of travel. If you run a 8.75x2.5 shock rather than the normal 2.75 then you can reduce the travel to 185mm but I'm guessing that is still too much travel so they went with the Enduro. Plus the Enduro is available in carbon which the Status doesn't...
  • 1 0
Ah makes sense, I had a status and was running it at 185, the enduro looks hello sick right aha! Cheers dude
  • 5 2
Maybe I missed it..but where is Steve Smith?
  • 10 0
This is what happens when Stevie busting an ankle doesn't make it to the front page of PB. He's out for the first (and maybe second) round(s) after casing a gap a few weeks back.
  • 7 0
Thanks feds. I saw that, but didn't think it was that serious.
  • 1 2
 out injured!
  • 3 3
Smith blew up his ankle over a month ago.Had to have surgery and will miss the 1st 2 rounds. That will put the overall out of reach for him so he will likely focus on worlds in Norway. He is the only racer to ever win there.
  • 1 0
professional athletes recovery rates are incredible... I blew up my ankle and was out for the best part of a year!!
  • 1 0
Does it fully put him out of contention for the overall? Not saying he could but if he came back to win every race from there on out and the others had some bad races something could unfold. Hate that he's out but hope he comes back strong and fast as usual
  • 2 5
I'm sure red bull is shoot him up with hgh and peptides around the clock , that's how all atheletes heal so quick If you use steroids the right way in small doses they can work wonders
  • 1 0
Anything is possible... But it will certainly be a tough gig coming into the series with two races of nil points, against a very competitive and consistent top 10-20
  • 1 0
Smith COULD still win the overall. It sounds like it will be touch-and-go as far as his participation at the 3rd WC @ Ft. Bill. It's a remote shot but, yes, if he dominated (and I mean DOMINATED - right down to winning quali's and finals in every race) upon his return and those in contention have all kinds of mishaps and injuries (hopefully no injuries - never wish that upon anybody), he could pull out the overall.

Injured or not, Norway is his track so you know he has Worlds as a major goal for this season.
  • 4 1
