 Its basically cheaper to buy a new XT brake than go to a shop and get a bleed and pad swap. hmmmm

 @YouHadMeAtDrugs: that kind of comes along with owning a bike. it's much cheaper to buy it and get it over with then pay pay pay to a mechanic for simple things like a brake bleed.

 That's like at our office supply store I worked at, we'd often have printers on sale for less than $40, and ink cartridges were like $70 plus to replace.

 I don't see how or why bike shops could stock shimano components with these prices.

 Actually, shops in Ontario sell xt brakes for close to this price. Also, butting the line on an xt is easy. You just ease the pads in with no spacer(hit the lever gently once or twice, not too much or you're screwed). Then cut the line and put a new Barb and olive on it. Once it's reconnected, use a tire lever to reset the caliper. Done. I've done this like 3 times, it's pretty foolproof. Xts come with a spare Barb and olive you have everything you need right out of the box.

 @imho4ep: taking breaks apart and never bleeding them is a wet dream. They may work but they're not proper.

 @properp: I've done it a number of times and only once needed a bleed afterwards, you just have to be careful to minimize any fluid spill when you cut the cable.. Not sure what you mean by "not proper" if they grab where you want them to grab and you haven't introduced a bunch of air you are good to go.

 I don't understand anyone who owns a high end bike and doesn't wrench on it themselves. A $350 Park Tool kit will pay for itself within one good riding season. We have an incredible local bike shop scene, but I'm not paying labor when I could buy the tools for the same price and do the job myself and friends infinity times.

 bleeding my guide brakes at home is a nightmare. Wish I was back on my old XTs, even though I had to top them off once a month.

 @YouHadMeAtDrugs: syringes can be had from the chemist for a couple of bucks.$12 for oil with tube and I think under 20 for the plastic funnel thingy CRC. Probably better with a bike stand $49 from Aldi.

 @Metro-Gnome: Why not use a brake block? My XTs didn't come with a spare olive and barb. I assume you can't reuse the one it came with? Pushing the pistons back in is frustrating.

 @jpcars10s: i've had bike shops do a hack job of working on my bike. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to own tools.

 @Kramz: not the same thing at all. that would be more like brakes costing $40 and the brake fluid costing $70. New brakes costing less (which they don't, the OP is wrong) than repairing used brakes is totally different.

 @imho4ep: it is not possible to disassemble brakes without introducing
some air into the system. They may work without a bleed. They will never be %100 if you skip the bleed.
