Its basically cheaper to buy a new XT brake than go to a shop and get a bleed and pad swap. hmmmm
  • 21 7
Yea but the brake lines will be long as fuck so your probly going to end up taking it to a shop to have them cut down
  • 18 1
@pm148: The kit to do that at home is cheap and easy to use.
  • 45 0
Bleeding your own brakes and swapping out your own pads is priceless
  • 7 9
@properp: excluding the price of syringes, fluid, and new brake pads ofc.
  • 3 1
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: that kind of comes along with owning a bike. it's much cheaper to buy it and get it over with then pay pay pay to a mechanic for simple things like a brake bleed.
  • 7 1
That's like at our office supply store I worked at, we'd often have printers on sale for less than $40, and ink cartridges were like $70 plus to replace.
  • 8 1
I don't see how or why bike shops could stock shimano components with these prices.
  • 7 0
Actually, shops in Ontario sell xt brakes for close to this price. Also, butting the line on an xt is easy. You just ease the pads in with no spacer(hit the lever gently once or twice, not too much or you're screwed). Then cut the line and put a new Barb and olive on it. Once it's reconnected, use a tire lever to reset the caliper. Done. I've done this like 3 times, it's pretty foolproof. Xts come with a spare Barb and olive you have everything you need right out of the box.

@Metro-Gnome: xt brakes, and shimano components are msrp here in the states. Interesting that they are cheaper in Canada.
  • 2 1
@pm148: How's the size small treating you?
  • 1 0
@jdendy: well, I bought them at an outdoor sports superstore for like $120 Canadian. Still way less than what I paid to ship from crc 2 years prior.
  • 1 0
Sorry I should've added, you need to expose the system while cutting and resetting the pistons. Google cutting xt brake lines, you'll see the full story
  • 2 0
@Kramz: sounds like a fun job
  • 2 0
@jdendy: Were you being sarcastic?$89.99 at Jenson, same all over eBay, $99 on Amazon.
  • 4 1
@pm148: if you are careful you can usually cut the cables to length and not have to do a bleed afterwards
  • 4 1
@imho4ep: taking breaks apart and never bleeding them is a wet dream. They may work but they're not proper.
  • 2 1
@properp: I've done it a number of times and only once needed a bleed afterwards, you just have to be careful to minimize any fluid spill when you cut the cable.. Not sure what you mean by "not proper" if they grab where you want them to grab and you haven't introduced a bunch of air you are good to go.

I don't understand anyone who owns a high end bike and doesn't wrench on it themselves. A $350 Park Tool kit will pay for itself within one good riding season. We have an incredible local bike shop scene, but I'm not paying labor when I could buy the tools for the same price and do the job myself and friends infinity times.
  • 1 0
@Levelheadsteve: no I wasn't being sarcastic. I was referring to bike shop prices and not online. The comment I was replying to mentioned shops in Ontario so I assumed he meant bike shops.
  • 2 0
bleeding my guide brakes at home is a nightmare. Wish I was back on my old XTs, even though I had to top them off once a month.
  • 1 0
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: syringes can be had from the chemist for a couple of bucks.$12 for oil with tube and I think under 20 for the plastic funnel thingy CRC. Probably better with a bike stand $49 from Aldi.
  • 1 0
@Metro-Gnome: Why not use a brake block? My XTs didn't come with a spare olive and barb. I assume you can't reuse the one it came with? Pushing the pistons back in is frustrating.
  • 2 0
@jpcars10s: i've had bike shops do a hack job of working on my bike. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to own tools.
  • 1 1
@Kramz: not the same thing at all. that would be more like brakes costing $40 and the brake fluid costing $70. New brakes costing less (which they don't, the OP is wrong) than repairing used brakes is totally different.
  • 2 2
@imho4ep: it is not possible to disassemble brakes without introducing
some air into the system. They may work without a bleed. They will never be %100 if you skip the bleed.
  • 2 0
@jpcars10s: isn't it amazing how many people want to be your friend when they know you can wrench on a bike.
  • 4 0
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: not owning this stuff and owning a mountain bike is like you saying I own a car but refuse to buy oil or gas.
  • 3 0
@hamncheez: Shimano the best user-friendly Brakes in the industry
  • 2 0
 @properp: preach
  • 2 1
@imho4ep: Indeed you can. I've done it on 2 sets with zero issues.
  • 1 0
@jpcars10s: When your only.place to work on your bike in January is the front porch by headlamp...yeah, a bike shop's prices sound like a bargain.

The other thing to consider is that if someone makes more money per hour than a bike repair costs, they're gonna hand it to the shop and keep making money.
  • 1 0
What kind of shop are you going to that they are charging you more than $90 for a bleed and pads?
  • 28 1
Wouldn't be a real online deals article without a half price Intense, am I right?
  • 26 0
Did you know that the image is only for illustration purposes and that specs may vary? just wanted to make sure you were aware.
  • 3 1
 you sure about that?
  • 17 0
Yes!! the return of the intense cycles to the Sale page!!! kind of surprised to see a yeti and so many fox products on here though...
  • 2 0
With new standards by the minute, the market is getting saturated with slightly out of date stuff fast. Things are going to get interesting.
  • 2 0
Yeah but did you notice how they spaced them out so it wasn't one loooong section? LoL, nice try though, poor bastards.
  • 19 0
Who else came here to see the Intense bike?
  • 6 0
I came here to see the intense comments. Was not disappointed.
  • 2 0

  • 1 0

According to my calculations you can build a carbon enduro bike for $~5750 using these deals. Still very expensive, but not $10,000.
  • 2 1
components are all marked 30% higher then retail before sale then marked down to just above normal retail. Bad play!
  • 1 0
Umm what's with Dunbar cycles? Aren't those "sale" prices the same as retail cost?
  • 2 0
